GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik in Dead Heat With Kathy Hochul in Hypothetical NY Governor Race

GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik in Dead Heat With Kathy Hochul in Hypothetical NY Governor Race

“The incumbent governor up for reelection next year would have the support of 43% of New Yorkers with Stefanik pulling 42% for Stefanik — as about 15% of the electorate is still undecided”

Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has been in the news quite a bit in recent years. She was the breakout star of the congressional hearings on campus antisemitism, which utterly humiliated the leaders of three top schools. Then she was considered by Trump to become the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, eventually opting to stay in the House for the sake of the GOP majority.

Now she is shaping up to be a viable candidate to take on New York Governor Kathy Hochul. Her polling numbers are fantastic.

The New York Post reports:

Elise Stefanik in dead heat with Kathy Hochul in potential governor race, as Trump edges Democrat in favorability: poll

Upstate Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik is running neck-and-neck in a hypothetical race for governor against Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul, a new poll obtained by The Post claims.

The incumbent governor up for reelection next year would have the support of 43% of New Yorkers with Stefanik pulling 42% for Stefanik — as about 15% of the electorate is still undecided, according to the independent survey by right-leaning firm co/efficient.

In a potential Republican primary for governor in 2026, Stefanik has a dominant edge with 56% of voters, with Hudson Valley Rep. Mike Lawler receiving only 9% and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman with 8%, the poll found.

Hochul had only a 30% approval rating among the 1,163 likely voters, while 57% disapproved in the survey. President Trump fared much better in the poll, with a 44% favorability rating among New York voters while and 49% disapproved.

The governor’s tanking favorability numbers were a far worse result than the 44% favorability reported in a Siena College poll just released on Tuesday. That survey also reported Stefanik with a sizable but tighter lead — with 35% support of GOP voters to 22% for Lawler and 11% for Blakeman.

It’s crazy close.

WKTV News has more:

The poll, conducted from May 12-15, asked registered Republican voters who they’ll support in a hypothetical 2026 primary election for governor.

Stefanik was one of three options given to respondents, along with Rep. Mike Lawler from the Hudson Valley and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who have all expressed interest in running.

No Republican candidates have officially declared.

35% chose Stefanik, compared to 22% for Lawler and 11% for Blakeman.

With over a year to go until a potential June 2026 primary, 30% of respondents said they don’t know yet who they will back.

The show of support comes as Stefanik has said she’s “strongly considering” a run for governor, which has remained elusive to Republicans in New York since George Pataki.

If Stefanik decides to run, one of the challenges she will face is that Democrats and the media will work overtime to paint her as too friendly with Trump. Then again, depending on how the country is doing at the time, that strategy could backfire.

Does it also factor in the fact that NYC is the tail that wags New York State’s dog?

Bingo. Plus, where do we need her most? Trump has already dangerously diluted his congressional bench by raiding it of his most MAGA allies for executive branch positions.

I would pay to see Stefanik slice Hochul into a million pieces. And she would do it with a smile on her face.

I am curious to know if the current governor’s paperwork for her mortgages would be interesting.

Who knows what would be discovered, if anything.

If the outcome were intelligence-based, Stefanik would win in a landslide. Hochul is NY’s Kamala. The woman is as dumb as a box of rocks. She’s the one who asked Zeldin why he was so concerned with crime in NYC during their debate! However, with corruption and unions controlling many votes, it would truly take a landslide for Stefanik to win.

Hochul is proof that in some districts or states all you need is a D beside your name and people will vote for you. She is a complete, unaccomplished mess.
