Former Rep. George Santos Sentenced to Over 7 Years for Fraud, Identity Theft

“He must also fork over $373,000 in restitution as part of the sentence.”

U.S. District Court Judge Joanna Seybert sentenced former Rep. George Santos (R-NY) to seven years and three months after he pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

From The New York Post:

The wayward, openly gay ex-Long Island pol, who was exposed for fibbing about much of his life story, was sentenced to seven years and three months behind bars by Central Islip federal Judge Joanna Seybert. He must also fork over $373,000 in restitution as part of the sentence.

Santos, 36, pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in August, admitting he defrauded donors and used the names of dozens of people, including family and friends, to falsely inflate his number of contributors.

Santos cried before Seybart handed him his sentence. He offered everyone his “deepest apologies.”

“I cannot rewrite the past, but I can control the road ahead,” Santos added.

Seybert didn’t believe him, telling Santos she never saw his remorse and he “appeared to feel that ‘it’s always someone else’s fault.'”

The prosecutors pointed to Santos’s “recent social media posts casting himself as a victim of prosecutorial overreach.”

Santos will report to prison on July 25.

Santos claimed he graduated from New York University and Baruch College. He also said he worked at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. He loved to portray himself as a successful business owner.

The guy never graduated from college. He never worked directly for Citigroup or Goldman Sachs.

Were there any gold bars involved?

My sister-in-law had her identity stolen several years ago….by an illegal alien. A number of credit cards and consumer loans were opened and an attempted car loan as well. The final tally was $150K+ in actual fraud and another $100K+ in attempted fraud. I think she (the perp was a Haitian woman) was sentenced (plea bargain) to something less than 30-mos, or maybe she was sentenced to 36-mos and did 30. I can’t remember exactly. But, it sure wasn’t 7+ years.

From other reports, I was deducing that the “identity theft” actually consisted of using his relatives’ names to make campaign donations to himself, meaning they suffered no actual loss, he was just evading campaign regulations.

Right. Not excusing Santos’ behavior at all. But, it was really a wholly victimless crime…and the Feds still threw the proverbial book at him. The VAST majority of identify theft cases go unprosecuted by the Feds even though the victims who have their identities stolen have to suffer for years from the consequences.

And Santos didn’t steal anyone’s identity.

This is like when they call a semiautomatic with a 20 round magazine a “weapon of mass destruction” (which they actually do, now!).

If only he killed someone in a blue municipality he could be free in a year at most.

If he murdered someone he could have a gofundme and raise a million dollars

Literally

No sympathy. Remember, he robbed *other Republicans* and their family members.

Actual prison time for the candidate/office holder who swapped around funds contributed among others in order to deceive about the number of donors and the amount they contributed? Hmmm, now where have we heard an inkling about this sort of thing before… Oh yeah, now I remember, it was the d/prog and Act Blue. Things are potentially about to get very real in the world of campaign finance.

but in order to [ay for the restitution he will not serve any prison time

ohhhh wait thats only for ecoterrorists who want violence against maga when they violently key teslas

So when are they going to prosecute walz?

Elizabetg Warren claimed to be an Indian.

Dick Blumenthal claimed to be a Vietnam Veteran.

Many other D’s with stolen valor clsims used in fundraising including Tim Walz.

Apparently, this law only applies to R’’s.

And, same jurisdiction- you can get a lighter sentence for murder.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | April 25, 2025 at 7:02 pm

What a bogus case. And the sentence is intellectually offensive.

Santos didn’t do anything even remotely as bad as most everyone (everyone on the left, for sure) does. They just hate him. So he lied a little. Big whoop. He spent a few thousand in campaign funds … LOL. They’d have to arrest every single person who ever took part in American politics, save maybe a handful or two.

This is all complete BS. 7 years?? Insane.

He must also fork over $373,000 in restitution as part of the sentence.

Restitution for what??

Exactly, yet Trump supporters here on LI defended him, because of course, he supported Trump. There is no shame for Trump supporters here on LI. If you support Trump, then you can lie and cheat and defraud anyone you want, including Trump supporters, as long as you say you support Trump. Really pathetic.

I wonder if Santos will be allowed to perform his drag queen shows in prison? That would be interesting.

Compare his treatment and sentence to several of the J6 accused and the Tesla car destruction – equal treatment under the law?
