Arizona Gov. Hobbs Vetoes Bill Requiring State to Cooperate With ICE
It also banned cities and towns from becoming sanctuary cities.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) vetoed the Arizona Immigration, Cooperation and Enforcement Act, which required state and local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE.
Hobbs wrote to Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen, the bill’s sponsor:
Arizonans, not Washington DC politicians, must decide what is best for Arizona.
You and I both disagreed with the previous administration’s immigration policies, and we may both disagree with the next administration’s immigration policies. I have worked productively with the federal government to secure our border, stopping fentanyl at our ports of entry through Task Force SAFE, disrupting cartel operations with Operation Desert Guardian, and working across all levels of government to keep communities safe with the Border Coordination Office.
I will continue to work with the federal government on true border security, but we should not force state and local officials to take marching orders from Washington, DC.
The bill directed law enforcement to assist ICE and other federal agencies, “including in the identification, detainment, and deportation of illegal immigrants in the border state.”
It also banned cities and towns from becoming sanctuary cities.
Petersen said Hobbs’ veto surprised him:
“It’s simply saying (that) if someone’s arrested, you’re going to hold them for up to 48 hours until ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) shows up to pick them up. Surely, we want to remove the most dangerous criminals from the street,” he said.
The legislature could overturn Hobbs’ veto with a two-thirds majority.

Go Andy Biggs in 2026!
Biggs is going to eat Hobbs’ lunch this coming election.
I am not sure; Lake could not beat Hobbs and the reason is the Maricopa County Board of Elections has unique ways of counting votes
We shall see. The Supervisors got a bit more MAGA this past election.
Not if Cindy McCain has her say in the matter..
She’s a sicko.
I still can’t believe this imbecile is governor. Of course, I felt the same way about Biden as president.
No republican will win unless they are voting iin paper ballots
Hobbs is a Hobbit who is hobbled with far left liberal ideology. Now she wants to hobble the state. She should get on the next flight to El Salvador and visit Garcia.
She hobnobs with the most corrupt hobgoblins of the Dems and RINOs.
This is true.
Hobbs is clearly in a fierce competition with her other Democrat counterparts for the title of, “Worst Governor in America.”
The way to get local LEO cooperation is with the Joint TF. The local and State LEO are currently sworn as deputy US Marshals (allows all sorts of shenanigans with asset seizure and jurisdictional issues for Civil Rights violations) but they could instead be sworn as ICE. States and local jurisdictions could opt out but then they don’t have access to joint TF with Feds, Federal LEO funding of equipment for these ‘TF’ and less leeway for civil asset forfeiture by losing Federal protections.
IMO the way to proceed is go into friendly jurisdictions and run the Aliens out via deportation, self deportation or to the ‘sanctuary cities’. That gets the numbers up on deportation and builds public pressure on leadership in ‘sanctuary cities’ as more Aliens show up demanding services and PO the electorate.
The democrat electorate getting PO’d is the electorate that will go right out and vote democrat, just a different democrat. They are incapable of connecting cause (democrat policies) to effects (chaos in their cities), This strategy is otherwise known as dumbing down the electorate for the win.
Let’s say that’s 95% correct in each year. Over a relatively short period of time the loss of 5% each year from d/prog of those PO/frustrated voters has a large cumulative impact….even if they just stay home.
Nahhh,,, I envision just a lot of churning. We’ll see with Chicago as a test next mayoral cycle. Chicago blacks are pissed because of the money given to immigrants, illegal and otherwise. A black democrat will get elected but we’ll see how progressive he/she is. Of course you can’t get any more progressive than the current idiot in office but it is a test nevertheless.
We’re already seeing a shift in voting patterns among ‘core d/prog.voters’. Check out the % shift in non college grads from reliably d/prog to solidly GoP. A smaller but growing shift is also occurring among ‘black’ men from d/prog to MAGA/MAHA/Tea Party over the past few cycles, same shift is occurring for younger voters under 25.
Pam Bondi should spend less time on Fox News and more time doing things like this.
Bondi and Holman are OVEREXPOSED. We need more action, less talk.
I have no real problem with Holman’s performance because he works in the West Wing; he’s purely an advisor to Trump and an advocate for Trump’s policy as he has no statutory authority (Holman wasn’t confirmed by Senate). Essentially, his job is primarily public-facing. Bondi, OTOH, should be more focused on putting people in jail who are undermine federal law enforcement initiatives and less time in hair & makeup.
Agreed. Homan is a.very capable advisor and advocate for Trump’s border and immigration agenda. Bondi has a different mission. She’s on TV a little more than I’d like. Maybe the DoJ is doing yoeman work building airtight cases before bringing them and that’s the hold up? I hope so b/c the public appetite for far less talk and much more action (mine anyway) is not being adequately fed just yet.
Oh, for the days of Jan Brewer and SB 1070.
Trump’s magic power strikes again–another Democrat stakes out the 20% position in an 80-20 issue! Go Hobbs–continue your quest to make Arizona great for illegals!
I’m guessing Arizona doesn’t need federal funds for anything. Good for them!
It’s unconstitutional to cut a state’s federal funding by more than it can afford, as a means of compelling it to cooperate with federal policy.
It’s also unconstitutional for the administration to cut any of a state’s funding for that reason; only Congress can do it, and only if it does so explicitly, and only if the cut is small enough that the state is only persuaded, not compelled.
So said the Supreme Court in South Dakota v Dole and other cases.
The Feds can not commandeer the States. They can ask for basic cooperation and cut funds based on refusal. If all the Feds are asking the States and their political subdivisions to do is something they already do then it ain’t compelling them to something new. Notification of ICE upon arrest of Aliens and honoring a detainer to keep the already arrested Alien in the facility the State/locals have already placed them pending pick up by ICE doesn’t seem like an imposition. Ordering the State/local LEO to go out and specifically find, arrest, detain Aliens would be an imposition.
The SD case was about withholding funds from the Federal Hwy Trust fund not general revenues. Those revenue distributions are based in part on the federal fuel taxes generated within each State for a specific purpose. That’s a much more narrow set of circumstances and it had an element of telling the State to ‘do something new’. Much different circumstances.
As for it being unconstitutional for the Feds to cut off funds to the benefit of a State…nah. See the closure of Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile AL. Sat on 1K acres with runways capable of handling any aircraft. Adjacent to the Mobile airport for additional capacity. Along I-10 for East/West and I-65 North/South plus rail access and of course a deepwater port facility. It was a logistician’s wet dream. President Johnson ordered it closed following the ’64 election when Alabama voted for Goldwater.
its a lefty world and we are just trying to stay out of their gulags
She did it because she’s in bed with the cartels.
rinos support the fall of america
What the hell have RINOs got to do with it?
