Ten House Democrats Vote with GOP to Censure Rep. Al Green
Before Speaker Mike Johnson read the censure resolution, Democrats started singing, “We shall overcome.”

Ten House Democrats joined all Republicans to censure Rep. Al Green (D-TX) due to his actions during President Donald Trump’s speech on Tuesday.
Green started his antics as Trump started his speech. He wouldn’t sit down, shook his cane at the president, and yelled at him.
H.Res. 189 censured Green for disrupting “the proceedings of the joint address and was a breach of proper conduct.” Speaker of the House Mike Johnson had Green removed “after numerous disruptions.”
The censure doesn’t do anything. It’s only a formal statement of disapproval. They don’t lose rights or privileges.
Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) spoke to Johnson about a censure vote against Green after Trump’s speech.
Johnson brought Newhouse’s censure resolution to the floor on Thursday.

Green shook Newhouse’s hand before he spoke on the House floor during the debate about his censure:
Green, now serving his 11th term, offered no regrets Wednesday when he explained his actions. Before speaking in his own defense from the House floor, he walked up to the Republican side of the chamber and shook Newhouse’s hand. Green said he did not blame Johnson or those who had escorted him out after his outburst.
“Friends, I would do it again,” Green said.
He explained his actions by saying Trump had indicated he had won a mandate from voters. But Green said Trump does not have a mandate to cut Medicaid, a program that many of his constituents rely on.
“This is a matter of principle. This is a matter of conscience,” Green said. “There are people suffering in this country because they don’t have health care.”
He concluded his remarks by saying, “on some issues that are matters of conscience, it is better to stand alone than not stand at all.”
"And still I rise a proud, liberated Democrat — unbought, unbossed and unafraid."

Singing “We Shall Overcome”
What the h’ell are they trying to overcome?
Al Green disrupting the presidents speech had nothing to do with civil rights.
Oh, I see! Race card! The magic, all-purpose never-expiring Race Card!
They build a shrine and take a knee to worship George Floyd, but can’t even stand up and clap for Laken Riley.
The Dems had apparently given orders to everyone to remain stony-faced, and give no recognition to the POTUS at all, no matter what he said. (A plan that accidentally made them all look like turds, considering the content of Trump’s speech. Trump couldn’t have written a better speech in this regard, even if he had known the nature of the Dems’ planned form of protest.) Some of these 10 Dems who voted to censure Green may have done so because he violated the instructions that had been given him, while some may have censured him, not for criticizing Trump or disrupting the ceremonies, but for making the party look like lunatics (they are).
Censure all of them and remove them from committees
I believe there is a move afoot to do just that.
Is it possible that Al Green is another dumb, affirmative, racist, blow hard, grifter?
That would be Yes.
I think it’s hilarious. In the last few days we’ve had
– the paddles
– the protest song
– the Streetfighter II video.
We British had our “Edstone” 10 years ago, but our politicians are usually nowhere near this entertaining.
I’m agog as to what next. Topless protest ? Remake of the “Life of Brian” Crucifixion scene ?
I mean let’s be honest, if the Babylon Bee did this they’d be ridiculed for implausibility.
Please. No topless. i’m begging here!!
The Dems are also picking up the mantra of “cutting Medicare”. I haven’t heard anyone say that they are cutting Medicare outside of reducing waste and fraud. Where are they getting that from?
Another moron who can’t distinguish between health insurance and healthcare.
‘Some Democrats started SINGING “We Shall Overcome” in protest’
Oh please. Overcome what, the downstream effects of childish antics?
Overcome Americans being so tired of them and their radical views that the Dem Party has reached it’s lowest approval rating in history. I admire their determination to climb out of the cellar but with what they are doing it’s going to be a long haul.
Dems believe that performance art is one of their duties.
They grew up being taught that their job was revolution. That’s why, whenever they actually get into power, they do such a crap job of governing. Nobody ever taught them about the nuts and bolts of governing. It’s more than just shoveling money at “consultants” who pretend to know more about running a country than you do (which isn’t a hard act).
Al Green, poster child for term limits.
Mike Johnson should just cut Green’s pony tail off and hang it on the front of the Speaker’s podium.
If a little scalp comes with it, well, a small incursion is acceptable.
Their rules.
Surprising that even 10 of the Communists knew that the caveman is an ass
Definition of moderate democrat: Someone representing a red or purple district who has a tough fight for reelection every 2 years.
Yep. Ditto for GoP. Which is why IMO:
1. The States and CD that are +5 Red gotta send folks to DC that reflect their constituents and more reliably vote to support center/right populism of MAGA/MAHA
2. We gotta stop expecting GoP moderates from purple or blue States/CD to be as consistent in pushing the agenda as a Senator or Rep from a +5 Red State/CD
IOW Sen Collins from blue Maine gets an occasional pass when she doesn’t vote as we would like. The same can no longer be extended to Red State politicians like Sen Graham of SC or Sen Cornyn of TX. They shouldn’t be underperforming any more than Collins should be over performing, so to speak.
That Alaska female dynastic senator also shouldn’t get a pass.
Yeah, but whatcha gonna do about it? They already tried primarying her; she won anyway. So the only options are to work with her or have her join the Democrats and take her seat with her.
Me? Nothing. I live in MA. I get to rant about our nutjob socialists senators and my congressman is McGovern (D-Nicaragua)
“Ten House Democrats joined all Republicans to censure Rep. Al Green (D-TX) ”
Well, there’s 10 Democrats who will be self-financing their next re-election bid. The party teat is dry for them.
When you overcome your past and focus on the future instead of crying victim and acting like pure jackasses while blowing all your money on the present your people may finally be free, Massa Al Green.
The elephant in the room for this incident is that Trump has repeatedly said he has no intention to reduce benefits for Medicaid. Or Medicare. Or Social Security. But once again (D) use the idea of (R)s want to push wheelchair bound folks over the edge of cliffs to cut costs. Ohhh, scary!
In fact, it was the (D)s who fiddled with how we determine cost-of-living by understating inflation to keep benefit increases low. It was NY’s own (D) governor who saved his state millions in costs by seeding uninfected nursing homes with COVID infected elders, reducing the “surplus population” as Ebenezer Scrooge might put it.
In fact, by making SS benefits and tips untaxed Trump will give a huge boost to many low income and elderly folks in 2025.
Now, he’s stated he want to cut costs, yes – but by going after FRAUD.
How many 150 year-old folks are still getting mailed SS checks?
How many docs are billing for procedures that aren’t performed?
How many docs are billing for treatments for imaginary patients?
How many drugs are being sold at incredible profits to the US and bargain prices to everyone else?
My understanding is that they cut off the checks at 115 unless you prove you’re still alive by complaining.
Cite?
The numbers of 150-year-olds getting SSI musk quoted come from the SSA’s own database, which DOGE fortunately obtained access to before a DC or Hawaiian judge got to issue an “emergency” stay blocking them from doing their job. That number was NOT zero.
That certainly SOUNDS like a policy that should have been in place – in some form – perhaps with a warning at 114 years old of the next year’s cutoff – or alternatively have a (local) SSA worker tasked with a home visit to certify the recipient still (or ever) existed.
Gotta hand it to Green. After he was ejected, he said he’d take his medicine (which I doubted) and he did. Good for him.
he’s consistent–an embarassment to our state for decades–a clueless, classless charlatan–calling him a grifting attention whore would be a high compliment
disgusting
Waiting for Democrats to do Riverdance.
That is an *awesome* idea.
The way to deal with this (and the paddles, and the streetfighter II tribute video) is not to get upset, but ridicule and hysterical laughter.
Trump probably can’t believe his luck.
The way to deal with paddles is to throw ping pong balls. Make it more absurd. As for the video the Repubs released their own counter-Video.
