New Evidence Shows Earth’s Core is Changing Shape
Meanwhile, Earth’s magnetic north pole is still on the move, and scientists have updated its position.

One thing about science is that it is never “settled.”
New research uncovered new evidence that requires jettisoning old theories and adopting new explanations for observed phenomena.
Take the Earth’s core, for example. Once thought to be essentially “solid,” it appears that the center of our planet is more dynamic than originally thought.
Scientists have discovered that the inner core’s surface is changing shape, challenging previous assumptions about its solid nature. This dynamic activity could influence Earth’s rotation and magnetic field
Deep within the Earth, a dramatic transformation is underway. A new study from the University of Southern California (USC), published in Nature Geoscience, has revealed evidence of significant structural changes occurring near the surface of Earth’s inner core.
This discovery challenges previous assumptions about the inner core’s composition and opens new avenues for understanding the planet’s dynamics, including its rotation, magnetic field, and thermal history. The findings suggest that the inner core, previously thought to be a solid sphere, is far more dynamic and susceptible to change than previously imagined.
The inner core was previously thought of as solid.
Earth's inner core is changing.
As per a study, the Earth's core is rotating slower than the rest of the planet.@eriknjoka brings you this report. pic.twitter.com/NM2a9xHJD9

Legal Insurrection readers may recall that I touched upon the subject in 2023 when it was noted that the inner core might be reversing its rotation and the position of the magnetic poles was changing.
This new study suggests that the core shape may be changing rather than just the relative rotation.
Scientists found evidence of this shape change by analyzing earthquake seismic waves that traveled through the Earth’s core. The study revealed that the surface of the inner core, while solid, appears to be quite changeable over short periods. These changes were observed between 2004 and 2008, with some areas of the inner core possibly deforming by over 100 meters in height.
As a result of the study, new ideas about the core are being proposed. John Vidale, a professor of earth sciences at the University of Southern California and a contributor to the new study, suggests the outer core may be tugging at the inner one.
Turbulent flow in the outer core or gravitational pull from denser parts of the mantle could have deformed the inner core boundary, which might account for the change in the seismic signals, Dr. Vidale said.
“We expect it’s soft because it’s near melting point,” he said. “So it’s no surprise if it deforms.”
The new findings will not be the last on the subject. “The offered interpretation is sound,” said Hrvoje Tkalcic, a professor of geophysics at the Australian National University who was not involved with the research, “although it is not the only possible explanation, as the authors acknowledge.”
In recent years, geophysicists have argued over whether differences in the seismic signals are caused by a change in the rotation rate or by a change in the shape of the inner core. “This study thus reconciles the last debate by proposing a combination of both causes,” Dr. Tkalcic said.
How about the magnetic North Pole? It is currently drifting closer to Russia at a slightly slower pace than in the 1990s. Presently, it is north of east-central Siberia, continuing its drift away from Canada and towards Russia.
However, the latest WMM update follows a period of highly unusual activity for the magnetic north pole. In 1990, its northern drift accelerated, increasing from 9.3 miles (15 kilometers) per year to 34.2 miles (55 kilometers) per year, Chulliat said. The shift “was unprecedented as far as the records we have,” he added.
Around 2015, the drift slowed to about 21.7 miles (35 kilometers) per year. The rapid deceleration was also unprecedented, Chulliat said. By 2019, the fluctuations had deviated so far from the prior model that scientists updated the WMM a year early.
There is evidence that the magnetic poles have been shifting on Earth for billions of years, but we now have different ways to measure this shift precisely.

Leslie, I don’t even remember what I had for lunch. 🙂
It’s probably due to “climate change” – there’s nothing that can’t be attributed to it.
My thoughts, exactly.
Trumps fault, we’re all going to die!!
I’m sure NBC “News” will run a story soon about this being Musk’s and Trump’s doing.
DOGE- Democrats Obstructing Geomagnetic Excellence?
Physics Question:
What happens when the biggest steel balls on the planet occupy Washington D.C. ?
Ah! n’ there’s the problem right there.
They’re brass! non-magnetic
Clang! Clang!
Titanium.
All those steel balls slow the movement of the magnetic North Pole towards Russia. That is what is being reported. Science.
Nope. It’s becauof Trump.
No doubt about it. The Earth’s core has definitely been moving to the right for a few months now.
No no no. That’s the democrat party shape shifting.
Probably should raise a new tax, just to be in the safe side.
For sure. Can’t let an opportunity to grift slip through their fingers.
Waterworld!!!! Costner predicts the future.
Or perhaps vice versa?
Could the shift, tilt, etc explain the changing seasons, winds, etc?
Is it going pear shaped?
It’ll probably flatten out and make sailing a lot safer.
Up to 100m change? The core’s radius is 3500km. That 100m represents 1/35,000 of the radius.
I doubt we are able to reliably detect 100m changes at the core. I’m not a geologist; that seems incredibly precise for the working conditions, though.
How dare you math so early in the morning! Haven’t even had my coffee yet!
Not to worry, governments have the answer: Just some deprivation of liberty and Core Change taxes should fix it.
“Core offset credits”.
These will adjust the core back to normal in no time!
Core Inflation….Blame the Fed..

Here is decent, clear video.
Worst pilot ever?
Bad conditions. I won’t condemn the pilot without the investigation.
Finally a video. There had to be one somewhere.
He hits a little hard on the right gear but it’s probably catching the wingtip that’s the culprit, swinging the plane around and losing the wing.
In a light plane greasing the plane in on one wheel is with practice the way to do crosswind landings, repeatable time after time. In commercial planes the wing tip ground clearance (and engine clearance on wing-mounted engines) prevents that side-slipping cancellation of the crosswind and instead they go for landing in a crab and straightening it out after it’s on the ground, with side-loads on the landing gear. It looks like this guy was using the slip approach in combination with hitting a little to hard, deflecting the wing tip into the ground.
It looked to me like the engine caught the runway first, though it’s hard to really see. He certainly came in all cockeyed and if he was going too slow, as others have said, that certainly would have contributed to instability..
BTW, I posted that comment in this thread by mistake. Sorry guys.
Engine is on the fuselage rear so he’s okay on that. The hit may have collapsed the right main gear, you can’t tell, but it didn’t look hard enough to do that unless there was preexisting damage to the gear. Mostly the wing tip flexing under the hit touching the ground, I think.
Oh … right. Silly me.
The passengers that I’ve seen interviewed have uniformly said it was a very, very hard landing. But, preexisting damage or not, I think the right landing gear failed and that’s what caused the wing to then be sheared off. It wasn’t a case of the wingtip striking the runway before the landing gear did, as some had speculated when the first video (from a distance) was available.
The main gear doesn’t have enough leverage to take off the wing. The wing tip does.
From what the passengers have described along with the video, I think the most likely explanation is the right landing gear immediately collapsed upon landing and then the right wing caught the runway, tearing it off after it slid for some short length…again, according to passenger accounts. Having said that, the video isn’t conclusive because of the angle and drifting snow partially obscuring the moment of touchdown. It’s possible, but not likely, that the pilot caught the wingtip first.
The answer to why the landing gear collapsed is unknown. It could have been some kind of preexisting damage. But, it sure looks like it was pilot error; there wasn’t any flare at landing…at all. Whatever the case, I suspect NTSB and the Canadian traffic agency will have a preliminary answer quickly. The FDR and CVR are going to tell much of the story.
Doesn’t look great for the pilot. Sure looks like she was flown right into the ground. Whatever happened, it’s a miracle they didn’t all burn to death.
I blame DOGE. And white nationalism. And fossil fuels. And Zionists. And transphobia. And the lack of common sense gun reform laws. And voter ID. And free speech. And the Russians.
Not only will the magnetic field reverse eventually (again) making the north pole become undefined for a while, but the earth’s actual spin axis is moving around owing to the earth’s flattened shape interacting with torque from moon and sun, producing precession like a top.
We did calculations long ago in magneto-hydrodynamics in 2 1/2 dimensions (2D fluid flow, 1-D magnetic field out of that plane) in hopes of seeing how conducting fluid flow might give rise to a magnetic field. The magnetic field just stabilized the fluid flow, the typical situation being opposing vortices winding up and strengthening the magnetic field, stopping, and unwinding the magnetic field, in a big oscillation. So nothing interesting or (more) unintuitive happens. It needs more dimensions.
I don’t know if there’s a theory of earth’s magnetic field or not these days.
That would explain western Europe’s new bizarre fascist politics.
They’re becoming eastern Europe.
Well that’s gonna mess up the Santa Flight Tracker by NORAD.
Whoa! “Scientists” have discovered the Earth’s core is not solid. Normal people already could have reasonably guessed this because they’ve seen volcanic eruptions spew out molten rock, and everyone familiar with compasses knows the magnetic pole moves (why magnetic declination changes). How much did the DC money spewers throw that this “valuable” research. We can at least be thankful the brainiacs didn’t attribute their findings to the climate change scam.
Dear Leslie, Good morning and TU for this Amuse-bouche.
Obviously the trusty commenters need something with our morning coffee beyond “hair on fire.”
It was unfair to run a “hair on fire” caption bracketing a photo of Elon in his Hairstyle by Weedwacker™.
Ahem, getting back to the topic at hand (or underfoot), the global purveyors of panic are having a hard time blaming this on Trump. But they’re trying.
As a follower of the Invincible episodes, this can be firmly pinned on Doc Seismic. Glad to have been of help.
Wow! Is it possible that the science isn’t settled? LOL.
I am deeply concerned that the Russians are secretly moving the magnetic North Pole in their direction.
My guess is that they will use this to continue their attacks on Ukraine, requiring the US to increase $$$ to Zelenskyy so he can continue to enrich himself.
Clearly, Trump and Musk are in cahoots with the Russians/Putin, mainly so we can then steal Ukraine’s resources as kick backs for the money they give to Zelenskyy.
???😜
Russia is stealing the magnetic North Pole! This kinda explains the Pentagon spending a trillion dollars. They had to update all their maps with the new magnetic offsets.
During the Trump administration, proving that Trump is Putin’s puppet!

Rename the North Pole to America’s Pole. Claim the Earth’s core for America and call it The Core Of America. Problem solved.
Follow The Ethical Skeptic on X. He has been all over the shifting core for quite a while. He also explains the oceans heating from the core and that it has nothing to do with the hoax that is ‘climate change’.
There is “settled science.” It’s composed of those theories that have been falsified. A theory, no matter how old or respected, and no matter how many times it’s been tested and found sound, become falsified when it fails a single test. It is then “settled” that the theory is unsound/incomplete, if not outright wrong.
Even the magnetic pole doesn’t like Canada 😂
