Trump Executive Order Renames Gulf of Mexico, Mount Denali
Gulf of America and Mount McKinley.

President-elect Donald Trump will sign an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali. From The New York Post:
The Gulf of Mexico will be rechristened the Gulf of America, and Denali, the highest mountain in North America, will revert to Mount McKinley — which it was called in the sight of the US government until President Barack Obama changed the name in 2015.
The renaming of the two natural features is to honor “American greatness,” according to a preview of the orders.
“President Trump is bringing common sense to government and renewing the pillars of American Civilization,” the document says.
The EOs will direct the secretary of the interior to change the names, meaning “Gulf of America” and “Mount McKinley” will be used in federal communications and on official maps.
I don’t know if Trump can actually rename it. If he can then other countries don’t have to abide by it:
The International Hydrographic Organization — of which both the United States and Mexico are members — works to ensure all the world’s seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and charted uniformly, and also names some of them. There are instances where countries refer to the same body of water or landmark by different names in their own documentation.
It can be easier when a landmark or body of water is within a country’s boundaries. In 2015, then-President Barack Obama approved an order from the Department of Interior to rename Mount McKinley — the highest peak in North America — to Denali, a move that Trump has also said he wants to reverse.
Japan, North Korea, Russia, and South Korea have been arguing over the Sea of Japan for a long time.
Many Middle East countries call the Persian Gulf the “Gulf” or “Arabian Gulf.”

Bro, day one of Trumps administration and there is already more winning than the entire Biden regime EVER achieved!!
And many will cry to the sky, while we will celebrate and drink the tears of liberals.
As the famous quote goes, we are gonna need a bigger cup for all those sweet delicious liberal tears! 😂
Many of DJT’s first-day Executive Orders are well-advised and urgently needed. Changing the names of Gulf of Mexico and Denali isn’t one of them. Trump is an admirer of President McKinley’s imperialism (which the NY Post euphemistically calls “McKinley expansion of US territory following the Spanish-American War”). In combination, these two name-changes (for the stated purpose of “honoring American greatness”) send a very bad message to a world that already sees us as a dying empire that will endanger the rest of the world in a dangerous attempt to maintain what remains of its hegemony.
A dumb question: is imperialism a bad thing for the country doing it?
For the country that’s doing it, it’s great — as long as it works. For the US, those days are over.
Why?
Apparently not.
They’re over when the NON-MARXISTS say they’re over.
Don’t confuse giving away the Panama Canal and corking up the oil wells with anything the American PEOPLE wanted.
People like you just don’t get it. Trump couldn’t give a flying fuck about what the rest of the world thinks 😂
That kind of thinking is leftist loser thinking, oh we can’t do that because what will the rest of the world think of us!
Those days are gone and AMERICA, fuck yeah!!! ..:as the song goes 😂
Thank you for making my point. If you can restrain yourself from raging like a fanatical neocon cultist, you might recall some of the many examples in history that thought they were so powerful that they didn’t have to have to listen to the rest of the world. For example, Napoleon and Hitler.
What tends to happen in such cases is that such empires end up having to fight overwhelming coalitions of enemies whom they’d made through arrogant, stupid refusal to accept reality.
Correction: “… some of the many examples in history of leaders and empires that thought they were so powerful …
Yeah… I think if American administrations that refused to accept reality were going to be a problem, we’d have been a smoking crater long before today. If anything, today was America crossing the safety zone line.
Here, leftist, your first mistake is in thinking the US is an empire.
It’s not.
The international socialism that lurks at the heart of all you do IS.
Just one more case of the collectivists trying to tar their foes with their crimes.
Cry more.
Scream.
Roll on the ground.
You lost.
Please re-read my initial reply to mailman in this thread. I agree — strongly — with many of DJT’s executive orders. And I voted for him, because the Dems are authoritarian lunatics who were destroying our country.
But because I believe with this one executive order (and the mindset behind it), you accuse me of being a “leftist”.
Like too many other regulars here, you can’t accept any future for America other than that of a 600-pound gorilla that the rest of the world must obey, or else. Those days are over. Much of the rest of the world recognizes the danger inherent in America’s refusal to accept that reality.
Correction: “but because I disagree with this one executive order”.
The Trump train is goring Libs and other subversive groups, tis is so entertaining.
This “trolling” isn’t “entertaining” to any American who lives in Latin America, and recognizes that this executive order will further alienate countries here in which China is already alarmingly influential.
Gulf of America could refer to North America and Central America.
Gulf Of The Americas (GOTA) is what I would have preferred but we get what we get.
Gun Owners of America is doing a little dance right now.
ah- he should get Belize, Guatamala, Belize, Nicaragua, El Salvadore, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama to wage protest if Mexico complains.
Gulf of Buc-ees… 🙂
“Deez Nuggets!”
When I read the head line I thought for a moment Trump was going to call the gulf a mountain. I thought that was a bold move even for Trump.
“Cognitive Decline” will now be called “Biden Syndrome”.
Only the most severe cases.
“I don’t know if Trump can actually rename it. ”
Of course he can, within the bounds of the Executive branch of the us Government.
He can’t force anyone else to call it that, but that’s the case anywhere, any time.
The WHO can call the disease that escaped from the Virology Lab in China “COVID-19” all they want, but they can’t force me to call it anything other than what it is: The Wuhan Flu. Or maybe the Chinese Flu. Sometimes I waffle.
And if one is persistent enough, the name change will stick even if detractors don’t want it to (notably, pretty much everyone else in the world capitulated to their overlords and refer to the Wuhan Flu with the WHO designation…I also wouldn’t jump off a bridge just because everyone else is doing it, my momma didn’t raise no fool).
BTW: I didn’t even remember that Obama had tried to change the name of Mount McKinley…I thought it was still called that.
The Gulf of America has a much better ring to it than naming it after some corrupt third world country who’s biggest contributions to the world are drug cartels and illegal aliens.
A lot of non-Spanish speakers have a hard time getting the right twang when attempting to pronounce “Me hi co”.
Plus, now we can probably lobby for heftier penalties for cartel couriers dropping transfer bundles of drugs into the Gulf of America.
After today’s pardon going all the way back to 2014, I think the “Fauci Flu” has a nice ring to it.
I don’t think it’s a flu, so “Wuhan flu” is incorrect. I’ve been calling it “Wuhan disease” since 2020, and the virus “the Wuhan virus”. I refuse to give it the dignity of a name like “covid”, which sounds like the Hebrew word for “honor”.
It’s simply “Denali,” not “Mount Denali.”
Former climber/solo alpinist here. I know my mountains and mountain lore.
Fun fact: The second highest peak in the world is in the Himalayas (all 14 peaks of 8,000 meters or taller are in the Himalayas). It’s called “K2” for the triangulation point it was assigned during Britain’s great trigonometrical Survey of India. There was an attempt to rename K2 “Mount Godwin-Austen” after a luminary of the effort, Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen. The name was never officially adopted, and even climbers fairly well rejected it. There was consideration of officially giving K2 the local native name, only to discover that K2 didn’t have a local name! The mountain is so remote, the most local villagers were unaware of its existence. To this day, the locals (who work in support of tourism and climbing in the area) refer to the mountain as “Kechu.”
Denali is the biggest mountain in the world taken from its true base to summit. Everest and K-2 start higher on their plateaus and are smaller. Denali is still a great name.
“For all you dyslexics, Denali ain’t just a river in Egypt.”
Mount Chimborazo’s peak is the furthest point on Earth from Earth’s center. The summit is over 6,800 feet [2,072 meters] farther from Earth’s center than Mount Everest’s summit. Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain from base to peak at more than 33,500 feet [10,210 meters]. Goes to show you the earth is a little fat around the belt… guess a few less donuts this year.
I think the headline writer just wanted to clarify that Trump isn’t interfering with GM’s vehicle naming standards.
Now do military bases: Fort Hood, Fort Bragg, etc.
I should probably look it up but did the DOD do that on their own, or was that legislation? At any rate it’ll be somewhat expensive to redo everything, and I rarely hear people using the new names colloquially.
Was done by legislation. Will take a while for that abortion to be fixed.
Hey, Donnie, can we get Squaw Peak back?
“other countries don’t have to abide by it”
It’s not like the rules of that game are new or anything. Since at least the Ninth Century, the country we call Germany has called itself Deutchland, and yet the country immediately next door calls it Allemagne (and a couple other neighbors variations on that). And around the time of Carter, all the US leftist chattering classes made sure we ripped up and salted over every one of our old spellings of Chinese names and places (remember Peking or Mao Tse-Tung? Good times!)… but apparently no one gives a damn that we still call Nippon Japan.
Not all of them. I remember when the Chinese government first made this change, round about 1974 or so, and part of it was that they changed the country’s name to Zhongguo. The Western news industry gave that one a big fat “No”, and continued to use “China”. It accepted all the other changes, but not that one.
Me, I refuse to accept such changes on principle. I still say Bombay, and the Triborough Bridge, and the Tappan Zee Bridge. I do take the Jackie Robinson, because he was good people and deserves it, unlike RFK and Mario Sfacheem Cuomo.
All in for Donald Trump on the second go-around, but for those of us who grew up on the Gulf Coast, it’s always going to be the “Gulf of Mexico.” Not that we don’t love America, but it’s always going to be the “Gulf of Mexico.” Why? Because.
