Trump Nominates Sen. Rubio for Secretary of State
Gov. Ron DeSantis will pick Rubio’s replacement.
President-elect Donald Trump has officially nominated Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for his secretary of State.
“Marco is a Highly Respected Leader, and a very powerful Voice for Freedom,” Trump said in a press email. “He will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries. I look forward to working with Marco to Make America, and the World, Safe and Great Again!”
Rubio’s confirmation might be easy sailing.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) already announced he plans to vote for Rubio.
Unsurprisingly, the other team’s pick will have political differences than my own.
That being said, my colleague @SenMarcoRubio is a strong choice and I look forward to voting for his confirmation. pic.twitter.com/OUIDx5KK4J

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) also voiced support for Rubio after working with him on the Intelligence Committee.

And Gabbard for DNI. Full steam ahead!
Matt Gaetz as Attorney General
WOW. I thought you were kidding. Then I looked at Twitter. Gaetz has absolutely no chance of gettign confirmed. It’s impossible to overstate how much he’s hated by GOP Senate Caucus.
Maybe he would be interim AG — which would last a long time.
He can’t be appointed as interim AG because he hasn’t been confirmed by Senate in a subordinate position. He might be appointable as a recess appointment. But, the Senate won’t adjourn for recess until (in the new Congress) until sometime in late spring, early summer.
Maybe Trump’s strategy is to pick somebody he knows will be rejected in the hopes that his next choice will have better odds. Same with Sec of Def.
I don’t know what he’s thinking. There’s a very real possibility the GOP will only have a 3 or 4-seat majority given where the remaining races are at the moment. Presuming they all get confirmed, the GOP might not have an outright majority until those seats are filled, which will takes months.
I don’t understand why you think the Republican SML can’t put the Senate in recess for a week at the end of January after all the housekeeping duties have concluded. Seems to me that is why Trump is laying out all his appointments quickly. Gives all the appointees time to set up their deputy choices which also need confirmation. Everything will be in place for a mass recess appointment and Trump can start cleaning house immediately. Keeping my fingers cross all the same.
First of all it couldn’t be a week. It would have to be a minimum of ten days, and even that seems shaky.
Second, that would be a brazen subversion of the constitution, which contemplates recess appointments strictly as a backup when nothing else works. Such an adjournment would not get a majority in the senate. Nor would a majority of the house consent to it.
Third, such a move would guarantee a legal challenge, which Trump would very likely lose. Both the practice of considering a break within a session to be a “recess” (which only started in 1921) and that of making recess appointments to vacancies that existed before the recess (which started in the mid-19th century) are of dubious constitutionality. If they came back before the court there’s a high chance that it would strike them down, and then not only Trump but all future presidents would lose the capacity to do these things even in a genuine emergency.
Especially if the case that came before the court wasn’t even one of real need, but a planned slap in the face to the constitution; the court would not appreciate that at all.
So many unexpected things have happened this year, and stranger things have happened. This shakes things up even further and signifies that no longer is business as usual, especially when there is a mandate to make change and clean the system.
As others point out maybe the Gaetz nomination is to make the eventual nomination of someone like Mike Davis look more appealing? I don’t see Gaetz getting confirmed.
This is the only thing that really makes sense. Gaetz acts as a kind of arrow magnet for the other picks that would otherwise be receiving all the criticism. Gaetz eventually withdraws and then Trump nominates someone who will easily be confirmed because the Senate Republicans would play the one card they get on defeating Gaetz.
Of course, the nomination has fired up the crazy conspiracy theories. NRO’s Ed Whelan says he’s ‘hearing’ that: ‘Trump would adjourn both Houses of Congress under Article II, section 3, and then recess-appoint his Cabinet.’ I think there’s virtually no chance of that happening. Absent some crazy scheme like that, what you posit is the only plausible strategy because no one really believes Gaetz could be confirmed. I’m not sure if there are even 30 GOP votes for Gaetz.
Thirty votes seems low. I suspect the typical shenanigans will apply and once there are sufficient public NO on record to block it that the leadership will allow their minions to vote yes. Grassley gotta be losing his mind on this one.
Trump doesn’t understand this. It is just like the last time when he was President. Trump’s only qualification for his cabinet is that they are loyal to him. No matter how unqualified they are. Gaetz is a prime example #1. Wash, rinse, repeat.
You know as much about Trump as you do anything else: nothing.
Little Marco is a rino, Ric Grenell would have been an excellent choice
On this we pretty much agree. Rubio is way more of a DC.establishment figure than I want at Sec State given the rot in the department.
On the other side of the ledger his confirmation process is gonna be way less contentious than Hegseth for Sec.Def or Matt Gaetz for AG.
Little Marco Neo Con and Neo Con Thune. Not going the way I want it too.
Oh well. Hope for the Best, expect the Worst
BTW, some Muslim “diversity” hire at the CIA was just arrested overseas, charged with leaking Israel’s battle plans to the public and Iran.
Zero coverage of this from the Dhimmi-crat media organs, naturally.
I imagine that CIA, NSA and FBI are brimming with anti-Israel, pro-terrorism sympathizers like this reprobate.
“Hegseth for Sec.Def or Matt Gaetz for AG.”
I don’t believe either will make it. I agree Grenell would be excellent but maybe he doesn’t want it. Gabbard at DNI probably fine..
Hmm! pulling a very limp Republican from the Senate giving Gov. DeSantis a chance to replace him with a conservative
smooth move!
