Report: Trump to Pick Marco Rubio as Secretary of State

Report: Trump to Pick Marco Rubio as Secretary of State

Trump considered him as a running mate.

The Daily Mail and The New York Times reported that President-elect Donald Trump will pick Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) as his secretary of State.

From The New York Times:

Mr. Trump could still change his mind at the last minute, the people said, but appeared to have settled on Mr. Rubio, whom he also considered when choosing his running mate this year.

Mr. Rubio was elected to the Senate in 2010, and has staked out a position as a foreign policy hawk, taking hard lines on China and Iran in particular.

He initially found himself at odds with those Republicans who were more skeptical about interventions abroad, but he has also echoed Mr. Trump more recently on issues like Russia’s war against Ukraine, saying that the conflict has reached a stalemate and “needs to be brought to a conclusion.”

Mr. Rubio was a loyal surrogate for Mr. Trump during the campaign even after being passed over as the vice-presidential pick.

Trump can’t afford to cannibalize the Senate for his cabinet. Grenell is the much better choice since he already has experience dealing with the state department and is better suited to cleaning out that cesspool.

I agree with this. Rubio is one of my Senators and I have always felt him to be a bit… squishy at times.
I think he wouldn’t be bad as SecState, but I think Grenell would be better.
And as you note, you can’t keep poaching the Senate although I’d bet DeSantis already has someone in mind to replace Rubio.

Steve59, same here. I never got a good rock solid feel about Rubio, but he might be a good pick here. Let’s see who DeSamtis puts in.

He could end up being a good pick. I hope so, as it will take a good SecState to undo all the problems that loser Blinken has created. Pretty sure DeSantis will plug in someone who will be a real Conservative and not a potential RINO. “Pretty” sure.

This is opening up a spot in the Senate for Ron DeSantis. He is terming out of the Governorship.

        Agreed.

Unsure if it’s because he seems ‘swamp-creature/establishment-like,’ or the fact that he called his new boss a “con artist,” but I think America could have done better…but think Little Rubio will do well nonetheless (so long as he keeps his deep-state leanings on the sidelines).

Squishy? Yes. I get that impression too. But as a keen observer of Sen. Rubio, where is he squishy? If he’s not squishy when it comes to foreign policy, maybe making him SOS is a good move because it would put his strengths to good use, and especially if his replacement in the Senate is less squishy on domestic matters (such as the border and the removal of illegals).

I would have no problem with Grenell. But, if Rubio is who he wants (or feels obligated to appoint for reasons) DeSantis can fill the vacancy immediately. That person would serve until next regularly scheduled statewide election. Whoever won that election would finish out Rubio’s current term. I have to believe there are plenty of good GOP candidates in FL who would win the seat comfortably…I hope.

    Yes!

    diver64 in reply to Sanddog. | November 12, 2024 at 4:54 am

Absolutely. He has already taken one from the House although I think the Senate seat in Florida is much safer for Republicans than the House seat in NY.

      CommoChief in reply to diver64. | November 12, 2024 at 6:42 am

Rubio’s Senate seat is safer in that DeSantis can appoint a replacement and FL is now red not purple. Stefanik won her CD NY 21 with 62% of the vote. It’s a very Red CD that any competent GoP candidate should easily win in a.special election to replace her.

Maybe there was a deal already.

    Gremlin1974 in reply to Sanddog. | November 12, 2024 at 6:27 pm

He can’t keep Cannibalizing either of the chambers if he want’s to actually get anything passed. Rubio is where he needs to be.

Rubio can cut a profile on the world stage and could be quite effective as secretary of state.

You guys are a bunch of worrywarts. We will get another solid figure in that Senate seat. A little bit of change could breath some life into things.

Does anybody remember when he said that he was not gonna run for reelection? I do. And he changed his mind. Imagine that. Let him go to State.

“foreign policy hawk, taking hard lines on China and Iran in particular.”ob.
Both of which are needed.

Trump doing a great job, giving scrummy people that sinking feeling of eminent disaster.

I’d like to see a caretaker appointed here, so DeSantis could run for the seat in 2026.

PrincetonAl in reply to Carl. | November 11, 2024 at 10:12 pm

Rubio has been a bit of a squish. DeSantis and Trump could work together to upgrade the senator slot in ruby red state

As for Rubio for SoS – he’s a bit hawkish but he won’t drain the State Department which is needed.

But I would take a redder Senator over a redder SoS. One is for a couple years and one is for the next 20.

artichoke in reply to PrincetonAl. | November 12, 2024 at 10:24 am

I think congresspeople (House and Senate) are mostly fungible, almost all that matters is with party they’ll vote with. Although Rubio was getting pretty senior and thus able to exert personal influence.

Hope nopt this may be a rumor started by neocons to push him in.

It gets him off the SSCI and might be able to place a better person in the Senate that is more pro Trump. Trump can dump him after he gets what he wants.

I’m fine with this. As noted by others, Mr. DeSantis will have (very likely) a good pick who can win the special election. This will help develop the Republican bench in Florida. Mr. Rubio will not go off the reservation; he has nothing to look forward to if he does.

Eastwood Ravine | November 11, 2024 at 10:21 pm

So what are the odds Don Jr is the replacement?

It’s an interesting idea and Rubio hasn’t done anything in the last couple of years to Warrant a lot of suspicion. So he has always been something of a squish in the Senate what with the whole amnesty thing years back. Plus, it is a opportunity for DeSantis to get how much stronger conservative sitting in that seat as an incumbent for whenever it comes due.

He’s not the person for the job and he’s a RINO through and through

Milquetoast moderate.

Good news here is that he’ll likely be replaced in the Senate by a solid R, and the even better news is that when he fails as SoS he’ll get fired and can go join the Never-Trump grifters at the Bulwark.

(IF) true, maybe the foIIowing scenario pIays out: Rubio sworn in as SoS. RDS appoints a true MAGA/America 1st senator. PDJT fires Rubio upon Rubio’s 1st serious F-up, or for “newIy” discovered career-ending uniparty gathered/kept bIackmaiI materiaI (that they Iost controI of or were never truIy excIusiveIy in controI of). This whoIe bIackmaiI thing can go both ways. Just Iike mitch the turIte IikeIy feII into his chicom handIer’s honey-pot, both sides know exactIy why cocain mitch thwarted PDJT’s first term so hard, incIuding the ‘never recess’ strategery. At this point in the game, eIected government officiaIs bucking MAGA are, at the minimum, suspected as being corrupt lMO.

He’ll be replaced by a Republican who then decides to caucus with the Democrats.

I’m still waiting to see what role Ric Grinell has. I was rather hoping for him in this position. Maybe Trump is eyeing him to be UN Ambassador since he has experience in the position with Germany.
I do like that Trump is not waiting to name people and is making some solid picks.

    clintack in reply to diver64. | November 12, 2024 at 6:19 am

Trump announced Elise Stefanik for UN Ambassador yesterday.

    TargaGTS in reply to diver64. | November 12, 2024 at 6:55 am

Trump still has most of his NatSec positions to fill including National Security Advisor, DHS Secretary & Director of National Intelligence.

clintack in reply to TargaGTS. | November 12, 2024 at 8:18 am

Was about to say the DHS pick had been announced — but apparently CNN’s anonymous sources are the only reason to think that’s true.

I *think* the NSA was also announced, but again all I can find are people commenting on the pick, not any official announcement. (In fact, even the supposed pick’s twitter account hasn’t announced it…)

Perhaps my google-fu is not what it once was.

Is there any place on the internet to see a list of *actual* announcements from the Trump campaign about this stuff? The rumor mill is off the charts this week. By next week, the story will be that the Trump transition team is in disarray based on how many rumors didn’t pan out. SMH.

Rubio is a bad pick for Secretary of State. He is the Vice Chair of the SSCI,Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, an ally of the deep state, and the Intelligence Community in particular. He has the stench of Mark Warner all over him.

This appointment, if true, would be welcome by the DS.

Hopefully, it’s not true.

I’m skeptical of an anonymous sources piece in the NY Times. (Also skeptical of yesterday’s rumors that Vivek is on the short list for State.)

I remember when Marco was little.

MoeHowardwasright | November 12, 2024 at 9:32 am

Rubio was on the Senate Intelligence committee. He was a disappointment during the Russia hoax. He was also a McConnell backer. Enough said. However, moving him to State allows Trump and DeSantis to move in a much more conservative Senator to fill the term. That is a smart move.
