Mississippi Teacher Fired for Allegedly Giving Students Dog Treats Mistaken for Beef Jerky

“At least eight children consumed at least one bite of the treats”

Oops. This sounds really dumb, but you can see how it could happen.

FOX News reports:

Mississippi teacher fired after allegedly feeding students dog treats mistaken for beef jerky

A Mississippi teacher is out of a job after inadvertently feeding dog treats to students during a class celebration, according to a report by WTVA, a local ABC affiliate.

The now-former Calhoun City High School employee, whose name was not released by the Calhoun County School District, allegedly mistook the treats for beef jerky.

At least eight children consumed at least one bite of the treats on Wednesday, according to Dr. Lisa Langford, the district superintendent.

Langford also lauded the school nurse for her swift response to the situation, which included a Poison Control call, according to WTVA. The district also alerted the affected children’s parents of the situation.

Much ado about nothing. A bite of a dog treat won’t hurt them a bit.
They should have just laughed it off.

I got pranked once at my company’s pizza party day by a joker who put out a tray of cat treats. The gritty anchovy flavor gave away the game pretty quickly.

I can’t believe they called poison control. I guess the school had no idea that pet food is a very highly regulated industry policed by the FDA. It is highly unlikely that any ingredient toxic to humans were contained in those treats. If they were concerned they could have checked the FDA website to see if any dog treats had recently been recalled. A side by side comparison of ingredients might have even shown the dog treats to be more nutritious.

The teacher should not have been fired. If they fire a teacher for providing foods that the school thought had the potential to cause harm why are any lunchroom ladies still behind the sneeze guards?

A fired teacher and calls to Poison Control over a few bights of a dog treat? Anyone else try out the doggy’s crunchy food when they were toddlers?
Dog food is probably more healthy than anything those kid’s parents are feeding them.

Apparently there is no hysteria a school system won’t adopt.

The idea that they would fire someone over offering dog treats is ridiculous, much less that someone would panic and call Poison Control.

Clearly, rational risk assessment and reasoned response is foreign to our educators, as is basic common sense.

But the question remains, how did this teacher come across these presumably unlabeled jerky treats so that she could offer them in the first place?
Or is she in fact dumb enough to find the jerky in the dog treat aisle and say “Hey! These are much cheaper than the jerky up by the cash register!”
