Book Review: Gift Shop of Gratitude by Peter Lovenheim

Book Review: Gift Shop of Gratitude by Peter Lovenheim

A Journal to Explore the Journey of Your Life

Thanksgiving is the day we often spend with friends and family, reflecting on our blessings and grateful for all that we have.

Subsequently, it seems the ideal time of year to feature Gift Shop of Gratitude: A Journal to Explore the Journey of Your Life by Peter Lovenheim, a forthcoming book that combines elements of self-help, memoir, and therapeutic journaling.  The work is slated to be published in early December and provides a fun and warm-hearted way for readers to begin creating a written legacy to pass down during future holidays.

Lovenheim, an adept storyteller and accomplished author whose work has been featured in prominent publications, adopts an innovative premise of equating gratitude for various aspects of everyday life to items found commonly found in a gift shop

The book consists of 20 short chapters, each exploring a different metaphor for gratitude. For example:

  • Bobbleheads symbolize mentors who have helped one succeed
  • Snow globes represent fond memories of inspiring natural wonders
  • Scented cables are linked to aromas that trigger powerful memories
  • Baseball caps stand for teams and groups that have offered support
  • Music boxes evoke the music that has been most meaningful in our lives

In the lead-in to each chapter, he offers fun facts and his own reflections on the topic. For example, the chapter on snow globes contains a fascinating history of how they were invented.

…[I]t was an Austrian man named Erwin Perzy who is widely considered to be its proper “inventor,” albeit accidentally. In 1900, while living outside Vienna, where he ran a medical instrument–supply business, Perzy was asked by a local surgeon to improve upon Thomas Edison’s then-new lightbulb, which the surgeon wanted made brighter for his operating room. Drawing upon a method used by shoemakers to make quasi-“spotlights,” Perzy placed a water-filled glass globe in front of a candle, which increased the light’s magnification, and sprinkled tiny bits of reflective glitter into the globe to help brighten it.

But the glitter sank too quickly, so Perzy tried semolina flakes (commonly found in baby food) instead. They didn’t quite work, either, but the appearance of the small, white particles drifting around the globe reminded Perzy of snowfall—and he quickly filed the first official patent for a snow globe, or Schneekugel.

Each chapter then concludes with a journaling prompt and lined pages, allowing someone to reflect on their own experiences and build their imaginary gift shop of gratitude.

In my case, if I were to write about my travel experiences related to natural beauty, my trip to Switzerland this summer would be one of the top entries. Truly, it is one of the most beautiful spots I have ever seen.

Of course, the US has many such places. One of my absolute favorites is the North Cascades in the autumn.

Finally, Maine…any time I can get there.

You can imagine your own responses. Readers who take the time to utilize the journal portions of the book will eventually have meaningful memories organized in a way that they may share with family and friends. Or, perhaps, it may lead to them eventually writing their own book.

News and politics focuses on a great deal that is draining, turbulent, and negative. Gift Shop of Gratitude is a fun, clever, and insightful read that will help readers remember the many positives in their lives.

As you contemplate unique gifts for the holiday season, Gift Shop of Gratitude might be a great one to give someone who enjoys diaries or wants to write more as part of a New Year’s resolution. Or, it might be a great one to give youself, if you are still trying to recover from the last 4 years of turbulence and drama.

With radiation coming up and probably some time on my hands that won’t be fun, this actually sounds like it might be the kind of thing I need.

I’m thankful to live in one of your favorite places. I wake up to the beauty of the Maine wilderness every morning.

I’m at 8000 feet in the Rockies – paradise!
