NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ Plan to Send Migrants to College Will Cost Taxpayers Around $1.2 Million

NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ Plan to Send Migrants to College Will Cost Taxpayers Around $1.2 Million

The migrants would start school in the spring with “English, American culture and personal finance” classes.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams wants to send migrants to college on the taxpayer dime.

The New York Post learned the mayor “plans to provide as many as 100 migrants with 12 months of classes, room and board in upstate Sullivan County.” It could last indefinitely.

The Office of Asylum Seeker Operations, Adams’s new city agency, will be in charge of the program:

The pilot program — to be overseen by Adams’ newly created city agency, the Office of Asylum Seeker Operations — involves both SUNY Sullivan community college in tiny Loch Sheldrake and The Center for Discovery, a special education school in nearby Harris.

The cost to taxpayers hasn’t been disclosed but will likely exceed $1.2 million in the first year, based on the price tag for two semesters at SUNY Sullivan alone.

“The mayor’s office is giving us money for things like supplies for people to live on, and the dorms and food,” said spokesman Michael Rosen of The Center for Discovery.

The migrants would start school in the spring with “English, American culture and personal finance” classes and “concurrent training for jobs in fields including healthcare, culinary arts and farming.” They would live on the SUNY campus.

The announcement caught Eleanor Davis, the school’s dean of communications and admissions, by surprise:

The dean of communications and admissions at SUNY Sullivan, Eleanor Davis, said that “this has been discussed for some time” since migrants began surging into New York City last year.

But Davis said Adams “caught us a little bit by surprise” when he included a brief description of the “partnership” in a 25-page brochure Tuesday about his Office of Asylum Seeker Operations.

“We weren’t prepared for the press release to come out. The mayor kind of scooped us,” she said.

Davis said the single adult migrants — all of whom will be specially selected and screened — would “remain New York City residents.”

Rep. Elise Stefanik, who represents upstate New York, lashed out at Adams:

“Mayor Adams is making a permanent welfare system for illegal immigrants in New York State,” upstate Rep. Elise Stefanik, the House Republican Conference chair, said in blasting the plan.

“By spending New Yorkers’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars on college classes for migrants, he is incentivizing and rewarding illegal immigration simply to export the crisis of Democrats’ own making out of New York City,” Stefanik added.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has been sending migrants to New York City, Chicago, and DC because their mayors declared their cities as sanctuary cities since last April.

NYC has received over 50,000 migrants. Over 31,000 live in emergency shelters and cost the city $4.6 million a day.

Adams is not a smart person. The optics of this are terrible. Middle class families struggle to provide college to their kids. Illegal aliens are more important. SMH

Middle class families are struggling to keep a roof over their kids heads and food on the table and clothes on their backs …so the optics of providing free college to illegals is beyond appalling

Yes, why are illegals who have invaded our country getting all kinds of perks and money to better themselves, opportunities that many Americans don’t get and they are citizens. If Adams wants them to have this he should pay for it not the taxpayers who totally oppose the invasion of America by people who become criminals once the cross our border. I have no sympathy for anyone who comes here illegally in what amounts to an invasion of our nation.

Classes not offered to citizens ? As for “culture” …this sounds much like indoctrination for future Dem/Prog voters.

How is Adams going to teach immigrants English, American culture, and Personal finance when he can’t teach them to New Yorkers? People who already start out speaking mostly English?

Gotta be confusing. The migrants went to so much trouble to come to America only to be sent to college to learn that America is the worst, awfulest oppressive racist country ever of all time.

Imagine if all of the $ currently being spent, and that proposed, went to fixing schools for citizens already here.

Imagine how much better off we would be if all of than money went to secure the border so no more of these criminals could invade America!

I can’t wait- undocumented and degreed

training for jobs in fields including healthcare, culinary arts and farming
Hmmm, “culinary arts” and “farming”…. Sounds a bit like racist assumptions about these “immigrants”, doesn’t it?

Of course they are jobs that can’t be outsourced….
While us legal folks are being guided into fields that can be easily done by teleworking from overseas on the cheap.

This program has $12,000 per person cost. ($1,200,000/100= $12,000)

It would cost $600 million to educate all ($12,000 x 50,000 = $600.)

“English, American culture and personal finance”

Interesting. Those are the same classes offered by the USCIS (and others) to prepare legal immigrants for the naturalization tests.

Seems Adams is trying to present the Feds with a fait accompli by rushing the illegals through the naturalization tests before they are qualified to take them as a lawful resident (and paying their expenses until they do).

Stand by for the class action lawsuits from those legitimate lawful residents who aren’t getting all that money and assistance towards their goal.

Unlike some states where community colleges are supported by local taxing districts, in NYS the community colleges are a part of the State University of NY (SUNY) system, which is supported by the state budget. Apart from that, for a century, there has been a separate City University of New York, which is supported by NYC tax dollars.

I have no problems with Adams using state-wide tax dollars to address a pressing social problem raised by immigrants’ lack of English skills, financial skills or cultural skills. NYC has served as a “melting pot” for over 200 years.

Lets be honest here. We aren’t talking about “college” courses, that’s just false advertising of what is actually being proposed, which are elementary school level programs to bring the illegals up to a standard which can pass the naturalization written exams.

More specifically, leftist indoctrination in “English, American culture and personal finance”.

My first reaction was that there was a typo in the headline, because you can’t fix three blocks worth of potholes for $1.2 million. Then I saw that it was limited to 100 immigrants, and it made a little more sense – but I guarantee you that even so, $1.2 million is a lowball estimate that will be exceeded before the first week of school is completed.

Programs like this should be used to help New Yorkers, American citizens, who did not complete their education and want a second chance to earn a degree and a career. There are many young people in NYC who today have no future without an education and could use a program like I describe for American citizens. It would be a good use of taxpayer money. In fact, when the City Colleges in NYC were free, NYC was better off.

Did anyone ask Adams where that $1.2 million was coming from?
How about how he was going to select the lucky 100 beneficiaries?
What exactly is his plan for the rest of the illegals under his care?

“How about how he was going to select the lucky 100 beneficiaries?”
The reparations committee in Frisco is wrapping up; Adams plans to hire them to do it.

Leave that failed city now. In fact, leave the entire state if you know what is good for you.
