Middlebury College Sued for Removing Name of Former VT Governor From Chapel

Former Vermont governor John Mead’s name was removed from the chapel for allegedly being a eugenicist. Critics say that accusation is unfair. Middlebury College is a hotbed of far left activism so none of this is a surprise.

Middlebury Sued Over Changing Name of Chapel
Middlebury College is being sued for changing the name of its chapel.
The name was changed from Mead Memorial Chapel to Middlebury Chapel, WCAX News reported. The original name honored Vermont governor John Mead, who served from 1910 to 1912 and paid to construct the meeting house and place of worship at his alma mater in 1914. But in September 2021, Middlebury leadership stripped the chapel of its sign “because of Governor John A. Mead’s role in advancing eugenics policy in the early 20th century.”
Another former Vermont governor, Jim Douglas, filed the suit on behalf of the Mead family.
“It essentially called Governor Mead a racist, and that’s simply false,” Douglas told WCAX. “John Mead was a tremendous public servant. He was a loyal alumnus. He was very generous to the college. He was quite progressive for his era.

This is another example of presentism. In the early 20th century, eugenics was a respectable pursuit of knowledge. Once it was hijacked by people like Adolf Hitler, it lost its respectability. Govenor Mead could not have known of Aldolph Hitler.
It is improper to apply today’s moral yardsticks to people in earlier times.
Wait until these snowflakes learn about Margaret Mead, founder of Planned Parenthood.

Wait, what are the grounds for the suit? There’s no such thing as defamation of the dead. Once someone is safely in the ground, you can say whatever you like about them with complete legal impunity. Mother Theresa was a secret nazi, the Queen was a drug mogul, and Olivia Newton-John had a sideline as a serial killer. All the article says is that the family’s feelings are hurt, which is completely understandable, but what legal right does that give them?

The family donated money to the school and had an agreement on the naming of the chapel. The family is alleging breach of promise.
Ah, that makes more sense. Presumably they want the money paid back, with interest.
It is hard for me to keep up. Eugenics is racist, but aborting black and brown babies is the epitome of racial justice?
