IRS Agents Visited Twitter Files Journalist Matt Taibbi’s House the Day of His Congressional Testimony

IRS Agents Visited Twitter Files Journalist Matt Taibbi’s House the Day of His Congressional Testimony

Coincidence? Jim Jordan demands answers from the IRS and the Treasury Department.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan wants IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to explain why IRS agents visited Matt Taibbi’s house.

This isn’t just out of nowhere. After all, Taibbi released the Twitter Files and testified about the findings to the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.

The agents just happened to visit Taibbi’s house on the day he testified.

Not weird at all. Wall Street Journal has the details:

Now Mr. Taibbi has told Mr. Jordan’s committee that an IRS agent showed up at his personal residence in New Jersey on March 9. That happens to be the same day Mr. Taibbi testified before the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government about what he learned about Twitter. The taxman left a note instructing Mr. Taibbi to call the IRS four days later. Mr. Taibbi was told in a call with the agent that both his 2018 and 2021 tax returns had been rejected owing to concerns over identity theft.

Mr. Taibbi has provided the committee with documentation showing his 2018 return had been electronically accepted, and he says the IRS never notified him or his accountants of a problem after he filed that 2018 return more than four-and-a-half years ago.

He says the IRS initially rejected his 2021 return, which he later refiled, and it was rejected again—even though Mr. Taibbi says his accountants refiled it with an IRS-provided pin number. Mr. Taibbi notes that in neither case was the issue “monetary,” and that the IRS owes him a “considerable” sum.

Taibbi unloaded on the government during his testimony, especially over the censoring of the Hunter Biden laptop story:

He said the so-called “Twitter Files” found the government’s actions pose a “grave threat to people of all political persuasions,” citing the suppression of The Post’s bombshell Hunter Biden laptop story in October 2020.

“It’s not possible to instantly arrive at truth. It is however becoming technologically possible to instantly define and enforce a political consensus online, which I believe is what we’re looking at,” Taibbi told Congress — a reality, he said, that Shellenberger has termed the “Censorship-Industrial Complex.”

Taibbi noted that a similar tactic was used regarding the so-called “lab leak theory” for the origins of COVID-19.

“Many of the institutions we’re now investigating initially labeled the idea that Covid came from a lab ‘disinformation’ and conspiracy theory,” he said. “Now apparently even the FBI takes it seriously.”

I want to know when the IRS sent agents to your home. Jordan demanded all of the documents associated with the visit.

By the way, earlier this month, the FTC demanded Twitter reveal all the names of the journalists who received the Twitter files.

This is beyond creepy. Taibbi unleashed his anger on his fellow journalists who ignored the story:

Matt Taibbi, the former Rolling Stone journalist, blasted his “former colleagues in mainstream media” for failing to cover what is being billed as “insane overreach” by FTC Chair Lina Khan.

He wrote that the lack of media outrage was “particularly infuriating” given that none of the journalists who published the “Twitter Files” had “asked for nor received access to private user data” whereas “the Files themselves are full of instances of government agencies improperly asking for the same.”

What is going on?! Is it sad that none of this shocks me? The government and Big Tech hate that they’re being exposed. The government hates that Elon Musk won’t kiss their butts. I don’t see Musk groveling at hearing like we saw Zuckerberg and Dorsey. It’s gross.

There’s nothing to see here, move along.

No one should be surprised. DOJ has been weaponized. More than anything else, there was a time when I has hoped my nephew would apply to the bureau, Now I am grateful that he did not.

UnCivilServant | March 28, 2023 at 7:48 am

It’s time to criminalize working for the federal government in an unelected office.

MattMusson in reply to UnCivilServant. | March 28, 2023 at 8:26 am

Won’t do any good. Government employees no longer feel bound by the laws written for them. They know partisan (crooked) DA’s will never prosecute them.

This isn’t new which is why the unfulfilled campaign promise to ‘drain the swamp’ resonated so much with voters. The bureaucracy is running wild and must be broken.

MattMusson in reply to CommoChief. | March 28, 2023 at 8:27 am

There is only one person running for President who will decapitate the Administrative State. And, even he might die trying.

The guy who didn’t do it last time he was in office?

gonzotx in reply to geronl. | March 28, 2023 at 10:09 am

Nobody amd I mean nobody knew it was that deep. If not for President Trump, we would have never known

mailman in reply to gonzotx. | March 28, 2023 at 2:12 pm

Exactly this G! No one knew just how deep and dark the swamp really was!

However, just imagine for a second what Trump could have achieved for America if he wasn’t being undermined by Democrats and Republicans and the swamp at every opportunity!

And therein lies the real issue here. Because this would have made life for Americans much, much better and would have guaranteed a second term the Uniparty was going to have none of that. So along came a Chinese engineered virus that Democrats and their propoganda media arm, with help from Republicans. Weaponised and now we are all paying the price for their greed and desire for power.

You are misinformed, Mittens is not running for President. Just think about the IRS going after Conservative groups. Just think about DOJ going after domestic terrorist mothers, just think about Obama’s Lois Lener, just think about DOJ going after J6 trespassers, just think about what the 80K IRS agents will do, just think about the internet censoring that our government has been doing. Just think about the war and killing that our country has done over the past 30 years?

We know a heck of a lot about how the rats are. When the infestation is so large, it takes time to clear the king rat. Sadly, many are not standing up to the rat and just sit in their arm chair. Question to the likes of Geronl, what have you done to help stop the spread of the rats?

henrybowman in reply to geronl. | March 28, 2023 at 6:08 pm

I’m willing to cut Trump some slack on this one. He thought the job was going to be easier than it was. He vastly underestimated how hard the sappers were dug in. And keep in mind, he was a non-politician — he hadn’t spent his life becoming intimately familiar with the actual enormity of the problem. Which is possibly why so many spitfire Republicans become RINOs — they learn that the problem is beyond the personal risk level they are willing to entertain to solve it.

At least he didn’t hang up a giant “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” banner four weeks into his signature campaign, like some other fool did that we all know.

Wrathchilde in reply to henrybowman. | March 28, 2023 at 9:34 pm

You do know that when Navy ships complete their deployment mission, which is exactly when Bush’s visit occurred, they fly a MISSION ACCOMPLISHED banner, right? At least that’s what happened when a Med Cruise rotation happens.

It’s bothered me for years that people bought into this obvious slur.

Like I keep saying, this is not a partisan battle. It’s a globalized Deep State war on civilization where enemies are anyone who resists this global takeover. I find it very encouraging that so many of the front line fighters are patriotic liberals. Where are the “conservatives”? You would think there would be more of us than there are of them.

Thank you Cocaine Turtle and your Gang of 18 for handing the Dems their $1.7B inflation bomb including the $80B to the IRA to fund their new Nazi army. Now let’s hope that Kevin McCarthy and the new Trump Squad can rally the House Republicans to shut down the government rather than cave on raising the debt limit. Slash spending!!! Start eliminating entire departments including the IRS, Education, and so many others.

Democrats oppose fascism except when they do it.

We are slowing morphing into the new paradigm. We are now moving from a two tiered justice system where the left gets away with anything (just ask Hunter Biden) while every one else, especially conservatives, are forced to obey even the most trivial laws. The new model remains the same for Leftists but changes for everyone else. This new model is to actively attack anyone who disagrees with the Left. This includes being targeted by false flag events, entrapment, endless imprisonment before a trial that never sems to materialize, violating your civil rights by such acts as not obey the Brady Rule, create new laws and crimes out of whole cloth just to get you, fabrication of “evidence”, and so much more. In other words, we have moved on from a passive effort to prosecute and are now entering the active phase to persecute.

Just retired after 40 years in the law, so I know where the bodies are buried – and this development is, by far, the worst thing to happen in my lifetime.

Sending IRS agents after a dissident journalist the very day he testifies before the Weaponization of the Federal Government committee is just about the definition of chutzpah.

E Howard Hunt | March 28, 2023 at 8:58 am

IRS field agents never show up unannounced in the ordinary course of business. As much as I revile and distrust the administration, I do feel this will turn out to be nothing. The reason given for the visit was to protect the journalist from fraudulent impersonation by another. This is hardly a threat, but the opposite. My guess is that a lesser luminary than an actual field agent made the visit to the home address to verify he was indeed dealing with the journalist, not an imposter. No other explanation makes sense. If intimidation were the object, he would have been sent an audit letter. By the way, ordinary field agents absolutely do no carry guns. Only the very few CID agents do.

Strelnikov in reply to E Howard Hunt. | March 28, 2023 at 9:17 am

Nonsense. These people are far undeserving of a a logical excuse.

E Howard Hunt in reply to Strelnikov. | March 28, 2023 at 9:27 am

There are plenty of real issues. You hurt the cause by prematurely attacking, like a pack of hungry jackals, such thin gruel as this.

If there were issues with two older returns per Taibbi, why would you need an in person visit when the government knows he is on capital hill that day testifying for the entire world to see.
I would love to see who and when the visiting agent was assigned to make that visit on that day. Some random agent just doesn’t pick a name out of a fish bowl the day before or that morning and make the trek to a residence.

          E Howard Hunt in reply to buck61. | March 28, 2023 at 11:34 am

Oh, my poor benighted friend. It is already established his name wasn’t picked from a fish bowl. You are such an innocent. You write as if the government were a few people sitting in a room watching cable TV all day. It is a huge leviathan consisting of innumerable agencies staffed with lazy bureaucrats whose main occupation is to do as little as humanly possible and then retire.

IRS agents are not given daily instructions. They manage a caseload that they work on according to their own discretion. They are assigned the case load. They cannot pick on anyone. The worst possible scenario here is that the publicity attending this journalist reminded some lazy agent that he was 3 months behind contacting this guy. This story is going nowhere. If they want to get you, they audit you, period.

    Not likely.

MarkSmith in reply to E Howard Hunt. | March 28, 2023 at 10:18 am

I would think a simple phone call would work. Forms have your number on them.

E Howard Hunt in reply to MarkSmith. | March 28, 2023 at 11:23 am

Quite hilarious. Aside from the number not being mandatory, you are assuming that an imposter filing a fraudulent return would be diligent in providing his victim’s correct phone number.

Ironman in reply to E Howard Hunt. | March 28, 2023 at 3:36 pm

You MAY be correct that this is perfectly innocent. But what if you are wrong? Considering the history of COINTELPRO, the IRS and the Tea Party, Crossfire Hurricane etc. I don’t think the government should be given a pass because it may be innocent. This needs to be thoroughly investigated.

E Howard Hunt in reply to Ironman. | March 28, 2023 at 4:26 pm

If I am wrong, then nothing happens. Lois Learner was proven to have committed very serious years-long violations against conservative non-profits and nothing was done to her. She was never compelled to testify after abandoning her fifth amend right, and was allowed to retire on a six figure pension. But, there is nothing here. Jordan has better uses of his time and should wait till this resolves through the ministrations of the journalist’s accountant before grandstanding. Everybody hates the IRS, so it’s a cheap, easy way for him to make some hay.

It is a sham 2-party system, which each side cynically plays off against the other. The leadership of both parties hold the people in contempt.

Ironclaw in reply to E Howard Hunt. | March 28, 2023 at 11:40 pm

Never giving the nazi thieves of the benefit of the doubt.

A nice, sensible, reasonable explanation for the visit which is also as implausible as a unicorn. It would be a nice world where the IRS field agents do actual field work by contacting people who may have been subjected to fraudulent impersonation. That way their tax refunds would wind up in the right hands instead of some scammer.

Unfortunately, we live in the real world. The IRS practically shovels money out the door to scam artists so when *you* file taxes on an ID that has already been used to send the dirtbags a check, *you* get investigated.

Sounds more and more like Putin everyday

Sure, all federal agencies have become a modern Pretorian Guard for the DNC/Left. But they are a woke Stasi, so that’s ok.

Biden’s goon squad. We are a failing state with the rule of law evaporating before our eyes.

If you read Gulag Archipelago, you know where this leads and you also know what has to be done.

The modern equivalents of the NKVD and the NKGB are spelled FBI and IRS. Wardrobe suggestion for the Feds, those black leather outfits of the Cheka look snappy.

Steven Brizel | March 28, 2023 at 10:52 am

This is intimidation by theIRS of dissenting views

Speaking of politically weaponized federal law enforcement agencies…

The ATF just made a surprise ‘inspection’ on a big sporting goods store (gun dealer) in Smyrna, Ga where apparently Trump just happens to be scheduled to speak next week,

Many oddities here. The store just renewed their ATF license last Sept so the only paperwork they would have on-hand is from that date. The ATF used 16 agents, which is massive overkill for an audit. Many of those agents were imported from out of state.

Unfortunately for them 4 Republican Congressmen showed up and questioned them a bit. The ATF quietly left shortly after that with no inspection/audit being done.

Curious huh?

Jordan demanded all of the documents associated with the visit.

I’m sure there aren’t any documents. All orders were oral.

How often do IRS agents show up at someone’s door?

A relative had *actual* identity theft: after always stating the same address on her returns for years, the IRS accepted a false filing and sent the refund check to someone else. It has taken years to get it all straightened out, if it ever really will be.

I can’t help but enjoy it when the left eats its own.

It sounds to me as if Mr. Taibbi upset der Fuhrer and the Gestapo was called.

illegal aliens steal thousands of identities every year and no one gets visited by the IRS as a result. They have to fight them over the taxes due on the earnings of the thief.
