Media Pounces After Florida Death Row Inmate Uses Final Words to Blast Ron DeSantis
“The guy murdered a police officer and a young mother in cold blood- maybe his lunatic ramblings that ‘actually Ron DeSantis is worse than me’ shouldn’t lead coverage of his execution.”
Most of the time, media stories about death row inmates getting executed for the crimes they were convicted of committing are of the run-of-the-mill variety and don’t get much attention beyond what local outlets report.
But in the case of Florida death row inmate Donald Dillbeck, things went a little differently after the twice-convicted murderer used his final words to blast Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
According to the Tallahassee Democrat, 32 years prior to Dillbeck’s last moments he was sentenced to death row after being convicted of murdering a woman who he carjacked after he got tired of serving a life sentence for another murder and escaped:
It had been 32 years since Dillbeck was sentenced to death, and [Faye Lamb Vann] wasn’t his only victim. At the time of her murder, Dillbeck had escaped from a work-release catering job in Gadsden County, where he was serving a life sentence for killing Lee County Deputy Dwight Lynn Hall, 31.
The lede in the story was about how Dillbeck’s last words were to tell DeSantis, who last month signed his death warrant, to “suck our d**ks“:
“I know I hurt people when I was young. I really messed up. But I know Ron DeSantis has done a lot worse. He’s taken a lot from a lot of people. I speak for all men, women and children. He’s put his foot on our necks. Ron DeSantis and other people like him can suck our d**ks.”

On Twitter—just like in the story—the reporter who wrote the article, Kathryn Varn, made the reaction of victim Faye Lamb Vann’s family on Dillbeck’s execution secondary to what he had to say about DeSantis:

The reporter later tried to defend herself by declaring it was the media’s duty to report on the final words of someone who the state is about to execute:

While that may be the case, should their final words be the focal point of the story or their crimes and the victim’s family’s reaction?

“Media pounces” tells us how out of touch they are. For normal citizens this is a positive endorsement for DeSantis.
It’s not an endorsement for anybody. Had Trump been the guy to sign his death warrant rather granting him a stay of execution instead of DeSantis and the inmate’s been instead directed at Trump, would that have been an endorsement for Trump? You guys are really reaching.

Of course, it helps DeSantis overall. The deranged will stay so. Most people see what underlies the “news” that is more appropriately deemed clickbait. It’s fine, but does it add much, if anything?
The story about the deranged grand jury foreperson, which helps Trump, is also clickbait, but deserves wider coverage because of the implications and the reactions.
No question that both illustrate derangement bordering on hate, and likely had the opposite effect of what was intended.
He hasn’t declared himself a candidate. Do many view him as a potential candidate? Absolutely. Do many fear that he is the strongest potential candidate. Yep. The fearful attempt to mask their fear with angry attacks and baseless innuendo.
Politics truly does create strange bedfellows. It’s always interesting to see the curious working alliance among those of different stripes unite, however briefly or tenuous, in opposition to a particular person or policy.

You seem to believe that a competition between the two is a bad thing. Further you seem to believe that this competition should be avoided. Why wouldn’t those constraints apply equally to both or all candidates and potential candidates? Would you prefer that GoP primary voters not have input and that the GoP National Committee simply anoint a nominee of their choice? Sound bad to me.
Personally I will wait and see what happens when we get to the summer and into the real meat of the GoP primary contest. Every candidate who puts themselves forward should be examined. I would hope that every GoP primary voter will give each candidate for the nomination a fair hearing, review the facts and decide which candidate is the best choice for 2024.

I literally just made a post urging GoP Primary voters to wait until the meat of the GoP primary this summer and give each candidate for the nomination an evaluation, weigh the facts and then make their decision as to which is best in 2024. I don’t see how you could infer that as an endorsement much less a rejection of anyone.
In contrast you seem to want to declare one person the nominee by what criteria exactly? Your proclamation? Your desire to see your guy win?
