AP Fact Check on Florida Requesting Menstrual Cycle Data Goes Horribly Wrong…for DeSantis Haters

The Associated Press’ misleading headline leads to an nontroversy adeptly handled by the FL Gov. Ron DeSanits’ team.

Late last week, the Associated Press ran a fact check related to the claim that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis requires all female student-athletes in the state to provide detailed information about their periods to compete in organized sports.

The AP found it was false.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The Florida High School Athletic Association is weighing the recommendation from an advisory committee, but no final decision has been made. DeSantis’ education commissioner is a member of the association’s board of directors and the commissioner also appoints three others, but the association is a private nonprofit organization, not a state agency under the purview of the governor’s office.

…[T]he proposed mandate hasn’t had final approval, and wasn’t developed by DeSantis’ office.

Florida currently asks female high school athletes to provide information about their menstrual cycle on health forms required to participate in sports, but it is not mandatory.

Ryan Harrison, the association’s spokesperson, confirmed the new recommendations were developed by its sports medicine advisory committee and approved in late January. It will now be considered by the association board of directors at its next meeting in Gainesville from Feb. 26-27.

A brouhaha broke out on social media once the story was published, not helped by the exceedingly misleading headline associated with the article: Florida weighs mandating menstrual cycle details for female athletes

[Note: The words “Fact Check” might have been useful in the title, not just in the URL].

Many DeSantis haters went into full drama mode on social media. American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten practically choked on the pearls she clutches so tight.

If Weingarten’s priorities were on school students, she might have known over 40 states already collect such information.

At least 44 states currently require or request the asking of female high school athletes for information about their “menstrual period,” Outsports has found through a state-by-state examination of publicly available “preparticipation physical evaluation” forms, as they are commonly called.

…Outsports has reviewed the websites of the high school sports associations and Departments of Education of all 50 states. At least 88% of the states include some form of pre-participation medical evaluation that requests or requires asking female athletes about their “menstrual period,” or similar questions.

Of the other six states, at least four — Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi and Vermont — have recently asked these questions statewide or had the questions included by cities, sections or schools. It was not clear if these questions were included in statewide athlete pre-participation forms in 2022.

It’s unclear if New Hampshire has ever suggested questions about menstrual cycle or genitalia.

From publicly available content, Outsports could find forms for only one state — Oklahoma — that do not seem to ask questions about menstrual periods in 2022. The state does include a supplemental “biological sex at birth affadavit.”

The DeSantis team responded rapidly and effectively to the nontroversey.

Rapid response director Christina Pushaw and deputy press secretary Jeremy Redfern responded to [former U.S. Surgeon General Jerome] Adams, who currently works as Purdue University’s health equity director, pointing out that Florida is not the only state to consider the requirement.

“Purdue’s ‘Health Equity director’ is apparently unaware of the questions on Purdue Athletics’ forms,” Pushaw wrote, displaying a questionnaire requesting females offer the date of their last menstrual cycle.

Redfern had a particularly amusing take.

Once again, the DeSantis hates have covered themselves in shame. However, I am sure they will find ways to embarrass themselves further over the next 2 years.

Gov DeSantis should mandate this on ALL athletic screening forms. The cognitive dissonance will cause heads to explode.

Is there any subject Democrats won’t investigate just to get at Gov. D?

This is a classic example of what happens when:

1. you go off half-cocked.
2. you shoot from the hip
3. you live in a glass house and throw stones
4. you’re an idiot and are not qualified for your job

Randi Weingarten has plenty to answer for, seeking to keep schools closed for years.

That witch, she should be fired/ lose her pension.

Preseason medical exams are routine for scholastic athletes, and questions regarding menstrual cycles are privileged medical information. Why ask? because women athletes can experience amenorrhea with too much training, so it’s a relevant question in this context.

Of course the subtext here is the question of men competing as women in sports, which raises the related question: why aren’t women clamoring to compete in men’s sports?

The answer is obvious and thoroughly discussed elsewhere.

Until someone is courageous enough to deal with the transgender social contagion directly, without capitulating to the lobby’s language demands, we will continue to be the victims of a small minority of narcissists and the millions of leftist creeps who exploit them as tokens, as lapdogs whose humanity matters not to activists, but whose ersatz victim status means everything in their evil idiotic intersectional power game.

There are women and there are men. Period. Stop this Orwellian bullshit usage “biological man/woman.” Let the burden of awkwardness be borne by those who created the problem by always using “Trans Jane Doe/John Doe.” to address outward appearance.

Randi Weingarten Tweets from her fainting couch but is peachy-keen with boys invading the girls’ restrooms.

Dear God, endless

Yes indeed. The infantile attacks on DeSantis do seem to be endless. No matter what he does the yahoos can’t help themselves and try to reframe it negatively.

By all means, if you have an argument, make it.

You are not going to win here. Only positive remarks allowed, or face wrath, including the requisite name calling and labeling. Intolerance was supposed to be a progressive trait.

Biden claimed that Chinese balloons flew over the US in the prior administration. Fake news? No mention. Not the right alleged culprit.

Nothing against DeSantis. But even to distinguish him is hardly allowed among some. Is he porcelain? While you know who is regularly trashed. We used to call it a double standard. Carry on.

Willful blindness still rules with too many Republican. “Lie to me again!” That is why lying works.

Yet they have no issue endorsing female products in boys bathrooms

Legitimate question for female athletes. They are screening for “Female Athlete Triad”…….Eating disorder, loss of periods, osteoporosis (stress fractures). Teen growth years are very important for formation of health bone structure.

    ^^^^^ This.

Sex is hard, so sex-related biology provides great indicators for other, systemic problems. People get probed, looking for these indicators all the time.

And you finally answered the question I haven’t seen answered anywhere else: WHY?
Menstruation is affected by a LOT of things, some of which are part of being an athlete. They want to make sure the young woman isn’t susceptible to some serious issues based on that. These medical pre-screenings are awfully intrusive to everyone. (And they are so partly because of an over-weening Safetyism in our society.)

When I was involved in athletics as a teenager nobody questioned getting a physical while the doctor put his fingers under our scrotums and asked us to cough. There are valid reasons for making sure athletes are healthy, and these questionnaires are only the front end of such physical examinations.

FrankJNatoli in reply to GWB. | February 6, 2023 at 3:51 pm

Women apparently need some body fat to menstruate. Women athletes, who get to the point of close to zero body fat, stop menstruating. I speculate that is what the schools are trying to monitor. When sports neuters a woman, something is wrong.

mailman in reply to GWB. | February 6, 2023 at 4:26 pm

I hope they limit replies to biological females only otherwise any data collected will be worthless.

“Menstruation is affected by a LOT of things, some of which are part of being an athlete.”
      Ha ha!
Imagine their discomfiture when that data starts showing vaccine-related effects.

I think the AP should show outrage at DeSantis’s failure to inquire into the menstrual cycle of MALE athletes too. Didn’t they get the memo about “pregnant persons”?

Seems like a good way to prevent males pretending to be female from competing against females.

Where’s the baby? Another day, another fetus, another handmade tale brayed. Good for DeSantis, the braying conceived is not viable, the handmade tale is sequestered.

I wonder how many of those who went nuts on The Twit about this were never in sports as a kid, and don’t have kids now. I’m betting a LOT of them.

(Of course, there was also the one directly involved in student athletics who was ignorant, so….)

Competitive sports while pregnant. What could go wrong? If you haven’t had your period in 3 months, it might be a good idea to sit out the field hockey games for awhile until we know why.

The article above clarifies the facts.
Does anybody, with a room temperature or better IQ, seriously believe the facts are relevant?
All Democrats, particularly all Democrat women, believe the original story, the facts be damned.
And they vote on that basis.

“All Democrats, particularly all Democrat women, believe the original story, the facts be damned. And they vote on that basis.”

Not true. There was a case is North Dakota about 15 years ago where a Democrat lady who was blind and deaf voted just the opposite of what you insinuate.

DeSantis is almost as much fun as Trump baiting the media and talking heads. Give him time, though. He is off to a great start

AP’s hubris that the world needs them to check OTHER people’s facts is adorable. I say, not until they show us they are competent to check their own.

AP fact checkers know more about law than lawyers.

AP fact checkers know more about fixing washing machines than washing machine repairmen.

AP fact checkers know more about virology and molecular genetics than virologists and molecular geneticists.

AP fact checkers know more about sewing than tailored do.

This is why it makes so much sense to consult the fact checkers who have jobs with the Associated Press … if I ever have questions about all these things.

I also rely on the AP for questions about remodeling my house.

And composing symphonies

And flying a plane. Check one’s facts with an experienced flight instructor? How 20th century can you get
