NY Rep. George Santos Refuses to Step Down After Nassau County GOP Demands He Resign

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) refuses to resign despite facing demands from the Nassau County GOP and Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY) to do so in the face of many controversies:
When contacted by Fox News Digital on Wednesday morning, Santos said he had no comment. He later told reporters on Capitol Hill that he “will not” resign.
The Nassau County GOP held a press conference demanding Santos resign after numerous controversies such as “finances, campaign spending and fabrications on the campaign trail”:
The calls for Mr. Santos’s resignation mark the sharpest denunciation yet of the congressman’s behavior from Republicans after reporting in The New York Times uncovered that Mr. Santos had made false claims about his educational and professional background and raised questions about his business, his financial disclosures and his campaign expenses.
They also add to the mounting pressure facing Mr. Santos, who is currently the subject of inquiries by federal and local prosecutors over whether his financial dealings or lies on the campaign trail warrant criminal charges.
Then shouldn’t the majority of the government resign them? No, I’m not making excuses, but come on. How often does Brandon lie when he has a microphone in his hand?
Santos admitted he lied “about his educational background, his work experience and his investments.”
Santos represents the Third District, which makes up most of Nassau County:
“George Santos’ campaign last year, was a campaign of deceit, lies and fabrication,” Nassau County GOP Committee Chairman Joseph Cairo, Jr. said, while being joined by roughly two dozen GOP elected officials. ” He deceived the voters of the 3rd Congressional District. He deceived the members of the Nassau County Republican Committee, elected officials, his colleagues, candidates, his opponents and even some of the media.”

“His lies were not mere fibs,” Cairo went on to say. “He disgraced the House of Representatives. In particular, his fabrications went too far, many groups were hurt –specifically, I look at those families who were touched by the horrors of the Holocaust.” (Santos allegedly lied about his grandparents surviving the Holocaust.)
Cairo went on to call for Santos’ “immediate resignation” saying that the disgraced congressman is not welcomed at GOP headquarters in Nassau County.
“He has no place in the Nassau County Republican Committee, nor should he serve in public service, nor as an elected official,” Cairo said. “He is not welcomed here at republican headquarters, for meetings or any other events…we do not consider him one of our congress people. Today, on behalf of the Nassau County Republican Committee, I am calling him for his immediate resignation.”

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy admitted “he did not expect Mr. Santos to receive assignments for choice committees.” Majority Leader Steve Scalise told the media “that party leadership would handle questions over Mr. Santos ‘internally.'” He said the leadership has “concerns” about Santos. Others said:
Other rank-and-file Republicans have been more outspoken in their condemnations. Representative Nick LaLota, another first-term lawmaker representing parts of Long Island, called for a House ethics investigation last month. Representative Anthony D’Esposito, whose district includes parts of Nassau County, told NBC News on Tuesday that he supported an ethics investigation as well.
On Tuesday, Representative Dusty Johnson of South Dakota told CNN that he did not believe Mr. Santos should be seated on House committees “until we had a deeper understanding of exactly what went on in his campaign.”

That’s up to the voters, not the club.
And they know that. That’s why they’re saying this; they know it’s not up to them. If it were, they’d probably be a lot more reticent.
That is the person they are making sure the voters understand this man who has pledged not to run for a second term does not represent them in hopes they will give their next nominee a chance.
Nearly all politicians lie when seeking office. They say they will one thing when they are running or office and fail to do those things once elected.

But… he is a politician. I can hope that my politicians are telling me the truth, but I never believe anything they SAY only what they DO.
And, honestly, I cannot think of anything he did that AOC or Warren Biden or 100 other politicians currently in power haven’t done. His problem is that he made too many claims at the same time; and he has an R instead of a D next to his name.

No, most politicians do not lie. They say what they would like and hope to do; not always can they do those things.
Sorry, but that includes outright lying–things they have no intention of doing but say it anyway in the hopes it will help their campaigns.
Most politicians don’t do that. It is not lying to mention things they aspire to do, even if they realistically understand that they are unlikely to be able to.
For instance, those who talk in their campaigns about a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on Congress; they know that it’s extremely unlikely that this could pass, but they’re not lying when they say they will do whatever they can to try to advance such an amendment. E.g. whats-his-name who extracted from McCarthy a promise to bring it for a house vote; he knows it won’t pass, but he wants the vote anyway, because that is as much as he can do, so he’s keeping his campaign promise. When, not if, it fails, that won’t be his fault.

An easy one is gun control where every leftist tells us that they do not want to take away your guns just the terrible ‘Assault” weapons. To a person, they want to take away all of our guns but lie about it daily. There hasn’t been a Democrat ever who told you what they really want to do if elected because they know they can’t win if they do. No. They are not supporting Dems and don’t want to change the house. Ideally, of course, they’d prefer it if Santos were to resign and a new Republican were to win the seat. But they know that’s a huge risk, so they don’t really want him to resign. They are honestly outraged, though, and are expressing that by demanding his resignation, knowing full well that he will refuse.

Nassau County GOP should resign with him. No one looked into his background? I’m not saying you need to do a top to bottom deep dive of his whole life but a cursory looking over would have shown red flags to be followed up on.
That’s not their job. It would have been the job of his primary opponents, but since he had no opponents there was no primary, so that didn’t happen. That made it his Democrat opponent’s job, which he failed to do. The local press did look into him, and exposed him, but couldn’t get anyone interested in it.

It is their job to ensure the people they are putting up are the people they say they are! WHY people should be checking any candidate IS exactly because it gives your enemies ammo to use against them…and as we know it one doesnt just hand easy ammo to Democrats like this.
Mild disagreement: The local GOP did have a responsibility. If a candidate is going to carry their colors, they should know who he is and whether or not he was worthy of flying those colors. They did not do that.
The bottom line will be if he properly represents his constituents, All the credentials and histories mean nothing if someone who wants to be a representative does not actually represent those who gave him the job.
If only one candidate files, there’s nothing the party can do about it. That person is the nominee, whether the party thinks he’s worthy or not.

Perhaps the r conference in HoR and Senate should pass a simple rule that if a members State party for a Senator and the County(s)/local party comprising a CD in the case of the HoR either revoke their membership in the party or call for resignation that those bodies will strip committee assignments.
That would empower a meaningful rebuke between elections from the bottom up. Unlikely to pass b/c the officeholders who are less ‘red’ in their voting or official conduct than their CD or State will refuse. There are a great many who fit that description; Cornyn, Graham among others.

No shit. It’s a rule proposal re the committee assignments for the r conference exclusively. The whole point is to provide grassroots r the ability to impose a meaningful sanction on r members of Congress between elections. The post you responded to explicitly states that.
How would that have worked? Let’s see, Cheney wouldn’t have a committee assignment nor would Murkowski. Each was censured by their State r party. Surely you wouldn’t oppose giving the grassroots base a meaningful tool to help keep their elected officials in line when they backslide?

Here’s the thing. If I were the Nassau County GOP chair, I’d call Santos on the quiet, and ask: “You’re not thinking of resigning are you? No? Good. Heads up, we’re about to pass a resolution demanding that you resign. Please don’t.”
It’s right and proper and good sense for the local organization to demand his resignation. But it would be bloody stupid for them to actually want that. And it would be even stupider for him to do so. What’s in it for him? How could it make his situation any better?
No, he shouldn’t have told all those lies. The fact that many Democrats have also told lies doesn’t make it any better. But having told them and been duly elected, he should tuck his head in and serve out his term. The only result of resigning would be to give the Democrats an undeserved second crack at the seat; how stupid do you have to be to do that? The GOP majority doesn’t have much of a margin; it can’t afford to throw one away. And we all know that if he were a Democrat they and their lackeys in the news industry would make sure he stayed in for the full two years.

I mean, so did my grandparents. They weren’t in Europe at the time, or Jewish, but they did survive it. But beyond that, plenty of holocaust speakers, authors, etc. have been found later to have been “embellishing” their experiences, why is it suddenly a big deal with him?

The ethics committee jurisdiction is limited to reviewing acts committed as a member and his shenanigans, that we know about, were before he was sworn into office.

Elizabeth Warren’s fake family history was invented for the express purpose of getting hired as a “diversity” candidate, fulfilling a federal obligation for the two universities that hired her as an “Indian” and claimed her as one on their federal Affirmative Action quotas filed annually with the EEOC. She was still making this false claim during her first campaign for US Senate.
