Chair of California’s Reparations Task Force Says Black People are Really Owed $1 Million Each

Chair of California’s Reparations Task Force Says Black People are Really Owed $1 Million Each

Meanwhile, a black activist warned the committee in an interview: ‘Comply or it’s going to be a serious backlash’

A few weeks ago, I reported that a nine-member California Reparations Task Force has estimated that black state residents could receive more than $223,000 each in reparations for the enduring economic effects of racism and slavery.

To put that amount in perspective, it has been estimated that it would cost around $569 billion to compensate the 2.5 million black Californians. That total is more than California’s $512.8billion expenditure in 2021 – which included funding for schools, hospitals, universities, and other civilization-essential services.

Now, the chair of California’s Reparations Task Force has said that black people are really owed $1 million each for “harms.”

Speaking with the Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC, Kamilah Moore said her task force found that California’s redlining housing practices targeting black Americans between 1933 and 1977 has had a direct effect on today’s homeless community.

Dubbing housing discrimination as one of the ‘five state sanction atrocities’ against black people, the panel initially recommended to California lawmakers that the state pay up $223,200 to each black resident.

Moore previously said economists on the panel estimated that black Californians descended from slaves were owed $1 million per person in reparations.

. . . . Prior to the task force’s first public meeting last month, Moore discussed the group’s work with economists on how to put a value on the ‘atrocities’ that impacted the black community.

‘They came up with $127,000 per year of the life expectancy gap between Black and white Californians,’ Moore said during a panel at Harvard. ‘That comes to just under $1 million for each Black Californian descended from slaves.’

Moore noted that ‘California can’t pay all that,’ so the task force will be spending the next six months hammering out an adequate value and payment method to recommend to state lawmakers.’

So, I guess the $223,000 each is a compromise we should be grateful for.

This announcement comes after a black activist warned the state to comply with reparation payments to avoid ‘serious backlash.’

Deon Jenkins told the first meeting of the Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans that money given to black people in the California should be in-line with the average price of a home in the state, around $800,000.

Following that appearance at the public hearing in Oakland’s City Hall on Wednesday, Jenkins, who refers to himself as a ‘hip hop organizer’ said in an interview: ‘Either they’re going to comply or it’s going to be a serious backlash.’

Others say the money is not enough . . . and it should be tax free.

Rev. Tony Pierce of the Black Wall Street Project who shouted as his time for speaking ran out: ‘$230,000 is not enough!’

Another speaker, Carol Williams, who said that she lived through homelessness since moving to the state in 1985 from Memphis, stated her belief that all reparations should be tax free.

She said: ‘I consider myself a foundational black American. The reparations should be tax free, so that when we get the money the IRS won’t come after us.

This response sums up how many feel about the proposal.

“There is a certain class of race problem-solvers who don’t want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public..”

    Booker T. Washington
    AZQuotes

(Kinda sad to consider that Booker T Washington died over a hundred years ago, yet here we are)

Actually, what he said was this:

“There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs – partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

      — Booker T. Washington

Not sure who “woked” the quote, but I guess it was inevitable.

I was just going to say, l identify as black

She looks more like a stool to me.

I find it stunning that no one on the Left and in the black community can concede the transparently corrosive effects on black Americans of the Dumb-o-crats’ dishonest racial narratives and demagoguery that cause many of these citizens to perennially marinate in a self-destructive stew of fallacious, contrived and alleged victimhood, and, perpetual grievance. If I was a black American, I’d be embarrassed that so many of my fellow blacks had been gullibly suckered into clinging to a victimhood mindset that clearly infantilizes black Americans, robs many of them of a sense of agency, erodes their personal ambition, financial independence and work ethic, and, has wrought so much destruction in the black communities and upon black families (and, upon the U.S., at-large).

There are zero impediments to black Americans’ professional, educational and political success in this country..

If only the U.S. didn’t feature as much “systemic racism” as it does, I suppose a bi-racial, narcissist-hustler named “Barack Obama” might be able to become President; an obese black woman named “Oprah Winfrey” could become a multi-billionaire, and, scores of black rappers and semi-literate professional athletes could find similar financial success.

It is fair to state that black Americans who swallow the Dumb-o-crats’ racial snake oil to complain about everything under the Sun are still as much slaves as their forebears, although, they are constrained by ideological shackles instead of iron shackles.

Dimsdale in reply to guyjones. | January 8, 2023 at 1:16 pm

“There are zero impediments to black Americans’ professional, educational and political success in this country.”

I would only disagree in that many blacks are impediments to themselves. Compare West Indies or African blacks to American blacks; there is a totally different attitude about studying and working that clearly transcends their skin color.

It is attitude, and having taught in some urban districts, I can say that there are black kids with absolutely no desire to succeed in their studies, fully expecting the school to just pass them along. And the schools cooperate.

Refuse all reparations. I want to see the backlash. Or give them reparations and within 5 years most all of them will either be broke or will have killed each other. One thing about it, with reparations the recipients won’t bother to vote anymore…

Look at the history of so many “affleets” that had multi-tens-of-millions contracts. Five years after they blew out a knee or the shoulders became too arthritic, they are sleeping in the back of a clapped out “hoopie” and picking up a few dollars here and there for autographs.

First law of genie-oh-dynamics: You can’t put the Genie back in the bottle.

Second law: Everything is down hill after that.

Probably the definition of “extortion” (aka bullying for profit) in California law will also be changed:

“Extortion is obtaining property or other consideration from another person, with their consent, or obtaining an official act of a public officer, induced by a wrongful use of force or fear, or under color of official right.”

Blaise MacLean | January 8, 2023 at 12:58 pm

Only by Democrats. And payable as well to descendants of those who fell in the Civil War fighting against slavery.

Incidentally, I don’t believe what I wrote above because no reparations are due to anyone. The concept is ludicrous. But I believe that part of pushing back against it is framing arguments aggressively. No more pablum please.

That’s right, keep upping the number., when the ultimate offer falls short what do they expect to happen? Full on race war? That’s where this is headed. They will feel entitled to hit the streets for free flat screen TVs, Nikes, cell phones, etc. but once they light this fuse it isn’t gonna stay in California. Nor will it stay confined to simple looting. It’s all too easy to imagine this spreading into neighborhoods where to try to “liberate” homes owned by whites.

Bruce Hayden in reply to jimincalif. | January 8, 2023 at 3:26 pm

Really don’t care. The cities that riot will become burned out husks, destroying the poor black communities, becoming food and pharmaceutical deserts. Tourism in those cities that allow this will crater, and all of the middle and upper class will move out. Unfortunately, that means that a lot of them will move to the parts of the country that won’t allow this sort of behavior, making housing for the residents there that much more expensive… Just look at what the pandemic did for property prices in Idaho. Luckily, so far, it hasn’t pushed that much over the border into W MT – yet.

jimincalif in reply to Bruce Hayden. | January 8, 2023 at 8:09 pm

Oh I know about Idaho, we fled from CA to ID in May 2021, cashed out our CA house for a princely sum, and we’d bought our Idaho home in 2019. At the peak last year, our house had nearly doubled in just three years. Things are softer now and I’d guess it’s down $100k from the peak. Still high though. There were some random bits of the 2020 “mostly peaceful protests” making it to the ‘burbs in CA. But I think this reparations gambit is ultimately far more volatile and once things get going it will not be easily contained to the cities.

MajorWood in reply to jimincalif. | January 8, 2023 at 7:01 pm

Good luck getting within 100 yards. Nothing says “turn around” like a stack of bodies. Long before security cameras were popular I had them on the house. My neighbor thought that they were silly as they wouldn’t stop a break-in, and I said that they didn’t need to, they just needed to make other houses more attractive targets at the get-go.

Eric R. in reply to jimincalif. | January 9, 2023 at 6:13 am

Yes, full-on race war is the goal. It would be sparked when rioting in black areas/cities spreads to suburbs, where police will not be told to stand down. As black rioters are killed, the inner cities would be inflamed to the point where they would pour out into white areas with such fanatic, murderous rage, that there would be wholesale slaughter – pogroms – of whites in nearby areas.

The irony is that most of the whites that would be set upon are leftist and sympathetic to them.

If the Democrat/Communists are in power, it will be a pretext to silence all opposition media and round up Republicans en masse.

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to Eric R.. | January 9, 2023 at 11:07 am

“The irony is that most of the whites that would be set upon are leftist and sympathetic to them.”

And the whites with guns and no fear of using them will change their minds quite fast.

Don’t be so sure about suburban police not being told to stand down. It would depend on who the populace elected for their mayors and aldermen/councilmen.

Someone should probably tell her that the whole reparations idiocy is racist and unconstitutional.

Owed money from who? All the slave owners and slaves are dead.

ConradCA in reply to Moon Battery. | January 16, 2023 at 11:37 pm

The Democratic Party is the institution responsible for the evils of slavery and it should pay reparations. It’s fortunate that they are in favor of reparations so they shouldn’t have a problem paying.

It’s up to $5 million not. That would be about 30 million blacks who receive reparations for a total of $1,500 trillion.

I think the woke California voters should start paying up. It’s the woke thing to do. Isn’t it what they voted for?

    Reader45 in reply to Q. | January 8, 2023 at 1:38 pm

Yes, I agree. They can start collecting from Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Mark Zuckerberg, and all the Hollywood woke actors. Then hit up all the Dem voters.

      jimincalif in reply to Reader45. | January 8, 2023 at 3:27 pm

But wait, Meghan is actually entitled to the $1,000,000. So is Oprah. They both have slave ancestors. Imagine how rich they’d be if they hadn’t been held back by systemic racism!

        Reader45 in reply to jimincalif. | January 8, 2023 at 5:29 pm

I think Meghan only gets $500,000. But since we are taxing the rich, it will cost her half her net worth, so $30 million to claim her $500,000 in reparations.

tolerancematters | January 8, 2023 at 1:06 pm

2smartforlibs | January 8, 2023 at 1:25 pm

Since other minorities were enslaved longer ( see indigenous people in America) and the first official slave owner in America was Anthony Johnson (a black). Seems there are issues to work out.

The issues have already been worked out. Before the committee on reparations was ever formed, they made the decision that no indigenous people could be on it. Case closed.

But any person with black ancestors who lived in the US “prior to 1900” is eligible according to the woman Sharpton interviewed. Doesn’t have to be slavery. It’s just being here for Reconstruction, now they want even more.

California might do it. It’s great real estate but I’d seriously consider handing it back to Mexico and invite the cartels to deal with the racial issues there. How’s that for a “political moment”?

Morning Sunshine | January 8, 2023 at 1:28 pm

I have an idea. Instead of a bankrupt state (or federal) government giving out cash they do not have, give descendants of african-american slaves 40 acres of federally owned land in the West, similar to the homestead act.
This accomplishes a few objectives
1) allows the recipients to make or break their fortunes based on the same opportunities given to the oppressive white folks of the 19th century
2) puts the federally owned lands into the hands of private citizens who can mine, log, farm, ranch it as they want. And sell/lease later if they want cash.

some factors to consider:
1) they cannot sell or transfer this land for 7 years.
2) as per the original homestead act, they have to “make improvements” on the land in order to realize the deed after 7 years.
3) if the recipients do not want raw land, perhaps consider giving 2-3 lots in an urban blight (say Detroit) with the same qualifications – this is yours free and clear if you make improvements within 7 years.
4) no land (state or federal) taxes to be paid until the deed is realized.

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to Morning Sunshine. | January 8, 2023 at 1:35 pm

The only qualifier I would add is: this is it. No more of anything. Make it or not, just like the Irish, the Jews escaping the pogroms, the Japanese, the Chinese, the Vietnamese, and now, the Afghanis.

Wrong attitude. The right attitude is “No” and they don’t get a bribe before it.

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to artichoke. | January 9, 2023 at 9:50 am

Sadly, I don;’t think the bribe can be stopped. They have been pis for years in the form of preferences, welfare, set-asides, and other “entitlements”.

Note that NO black has stood up and said “don’t do anything for us” since Fredrick Douglass.

“”give descendants of african-american slaves 40 acres””

    Don’t forget the mule.

Another condition: On your 40 acres, you have to take in all of the illegal immigrants. House them, feed them, provide healthcare and schooling.

Baltimore had a program in the 70/80s similar for abandoned property near the harbor. https://www.nytimes.com/1986/01/16/garden/baltimore-s-story-of-city-homestaeding.html

MajorWood in reply to Morning Sunshine. | January 8, 2023 at 5:15 pm

Anything given away for free will be destroyed. Look at the inner cities. High rises make way for low rises make way for high rises …. It is like wars, a 20-25 year cycle where the previous generation has forgotten the lesson that should have been learned the first time. But each cycle is sold as “the solution.” Ditto with the homeless in Portland. I give those villages of micro-houses about 3 years before being totally destroyed by those who are mentally incapable of having nice things.

Morning Sunshine in reply to MajorWood. | January 8, 2023 at 6:06 pm

which is why the title is withheld for 7 years and there was the qualification of “make improvements” on the property.

Like I said – the same opportunity that was given the white citizens of this country 150 years ago. Many many homesteaders tried and failed. And tried again. But there was WORK involved in their ultimate success.

healthguyfsu in reply to Morning Sunshine. | January 9, 2023 at 7:56 am

What you would have in 7 years is minor improvements (like maybe they’d drive a low rider up on the property or build a mancave with lots of woofers and speakers). Then, all of the land would be sold over market value to a bunch of WEF disciples like Gates.

artichoke in reply to healthguyfsu. | January 9, 2023 at 9:44 am

Exactly. Once you agree to any terms at all, there’s no way you get that land back even if they do nothing. And why give it anyway, we don’t owe them anything.

That’s the important thing to remember. We don’t owe them anything.

I suggest everyone start sharing the names of the black slaveowners. If you want reparations, collect from the black family members whose great great grandparents owned slaves. Remind them that back in the 1800’s people who were formerly enslaved managed to go to work and make a decent living. You were never enslaved, so get to work.

I am not for tying or fastening them on the tree in any way, except by nature’s plan, and if they will not stay there, let them fall. And if the Negro cannot stand on his own legs, let him fall also. rhhardin That is a very inconvenient truth, for them. If you did a standard of living bell curves for slave descendents in America and those who remained there, I suspect that there would be very little overlap between them. Careful, now they’ll want money out of city budgets as reparations for low achievement in school. “Cancer of low expectations” may have some truth, but part of it is just low performance. And then the expectations get adjusted to what seems achievable. Can’t blame the teachers in that case. In fact extra money has been spent, and we should look into reparations from them for that.

If these grifters get a big payout and half of them spend it on drugs and die of a fentanyl overdose within a year – how much taxpayer money is saved from them not going to jail for some later random criminal activity?

There’s got to be a financial break-even point.

MajorWood in reply to All Seeing Eye. | January 8, 2023 at 5:36 pm

My dad taught me that there are two types of people: those whose lives are improved by more money, and those whose lives are made worse. Those who want and/or are demanding more money are almost always in the latter group. Until “they” sort out that “they” are the source of all of their problems, nothing will change.

I have a neighbor who immigrated to the US from Kenya back in the 90s. He made an interesting observation regarding ‘reparations’.

“As a post-slavery immigrant I have no claim at all to such payments and I’m guessing less than half of the “blacks” in America are actually provable as the direct descendants of slaves.

So if you really want to see some fun, try telling the rest that they don’t rate any of the extorted money that the race-baiters have been promising them for decades now.”

Boom.

I have a solution. Hunter Biden’s pictures are worth a million dollars each. Why not have him paint everybody a picture?

1) Just noting and not claiming anything for it, but under Federal law [the Chinese Exclusion Act] my ancestors were legally defined as not being human beings and were not protected by either the law or the Constitution. That ended in 1943. My dad earned his citizenship the hard way leading a squad of infantry across Germany and Austria to meet with Russians. I got mine the easy way, being born here.

2) If California does this, at either the $223K level or the million dollar level, it would behoove other states to start encouraging their black citizens to move to California. And no, no Federal aid to California.

Subotai Bahadur

OK, promise them a million dollars each, payable in $50 installments. Half of them will OD on the first installment, and attrition will take care of most of the rest before anybody collects the first $200. Solve a lot of problems with one simple solution, except for what to do with all of the bodies.

This will end in tragedy.

Nearly 60 years ago, LBJ established a reparations program called the Great Society program. It may have forked over trillions by now.

In addition, Blacks in CA are collecting additional reparations daily, through the state’s Shoplifting Forgiveness program.

IMO Native Americans are the only group where a legitimate claim for reparations can be made. They really did own the country before we showed up and have arguably ended up worse for our involvement. Can any Black claim they would have been better off now had their ancestor stayed in Africa. Weren’t they the ones the Black tribal chiefs sold into slavery?

If you want to increase the flight of the middle class from California, this is one way to do it.

Comply or it’s going to be a serious backlash

I believe that’s usually called extortion when whites utter such a demand.

It’s called extortion when anyone utters such a demand, and besides they already had their BLM festivities, I’d say they are more than done. I’d say “bring it on”. How can we still be discussing complying after they make a threat?

“Following that appearance at the public hearing in Oakland’s City Hall on Wednesday, Jenkins, who refers to himself as a ‘hip hop organizer’ said in an interview: ‘Either they’re going to comply or it’s going to be a serious backlash.’”

And? Not that I live in California (thank God), but does this moron think that a threat would make people comply? What’s he going to do, start a riot? Black people can burn their own neighborhoods to the ground for all I care. If they start in other neighborhoods then they’re going to find out that starting a race war when you’re massively outnumbered isn’t a good idea.

“The BLM violence in 2020 left close to 20 people dead. The riots caused more than $1 billion in losses, the costliest in U.S. history. Several cities witnessed more than 600 riots.”

It appears to me that we don’t owe negroes reparations. They owe the rest of us reparations.

If we deduct from said 1 million dollars the cost of the civil war in lives and treasure I wonder how the math then works out?

I counter with: a six pack of Colt .45 and a pack of Kools.

How about they get nothing? They have been getting tax dollars for decade upon decade and many are still no better off. If you don’t earn it, you generally just waste it,

Reparations for all those years California was a SLAVE STATE???

My family has two soldiers buried in the Andersonville POW Camp graveyard, how much and we due?
Certainly, it is much more than the descendants of slaves they died to free.

I agree that blacks are owed reparations, but the institution that fought to keep blacks in chains should pay and it’s not government, it’s the Democratic Party who should pay. This is the perfect solution because they are the ones who are responsible and now are advocating for reparations.

Everyone who does not think reparations should be paid, should boycott all businesses based in California. California businesses will have to bake the cost of their taxes for reparations into their prices.

Why should people who never benefited from Affirmative Action pay for Reparations to those who did?

This announcement comes after a black activist warned the state to comply with reparation payments to avoid ‘serious backlash.’

I think she’s got that right, but with the opposite polarity. Complying would risk a serious backlash that would harm black people for generations to come.

So Africans, who practiced slavery for hundreds of years prior to the formation of America, captured and sold their countrymen to slave traders who brought them to North America and it’s the North Americans who owe reparations? NO. It’s the Africans who, as the root cause, owe the reparations.

I think everyone who thinks they are owed any reparation’s for anything must return to their native mother land. You are not welcome here. And while you are back in your native land, Pick Up A History Book and READ IT.
