Gun Related Homicides of Black Men Climb to Rates Not Seen Since the 1990s

“Since 1990, rates of gun-related homicide have been highest among Black men aged 20 to 24, the analysis said, with 142 fatalities per 100,000 people in this group in 2021—a 74% increase since 2014.”

The rate of gun deaths is currently reaching levels not seen in decades, and when it comes to homicides, it is black men who are seeing the worst of it.

From the Wall Street Journal:

Gun Death Rate Nears Three-Decade High, With Men at Most Risk

The rate of gun deaths in the U.S. reached a 28-year high in 2021 after sharp increases in homicides of Black men and suicides among white men, an analysis of federal data showed.

A record 48,953 deaths in the U.S., or about 15 fatalities per 100,000 people, were caused by guns last year, said the analysis published Tuesday in the journal JAMA Network Open. Gun deaths declined in the 1990s, but have been rising steadily over the past decade and skyrocketed during the Covid-19 pandemic, said researchers who conducted the analysis.

Gun-related deaths of women and children have risen, the analysis said, but men remain far more likely to die from guns.

“The disparities are so marked,” said Chris Rees, a co-author of the study and an assistant professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Rees and his colleagues analyzed U.S. firearm fatality rates from 1990 to 2021 using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 1.1 million people in the U.S. have died from guns since 1990, the analysis showed…

Since 1990, rates of gun-related homicide have been highest among Black men aged 20 to 24, the analysis said, with 142 fatalities per 100,000 people in this group in 2021—a 74% increase since 2014. Homicide rates are as much as 23 times higher among Black men and as much as nearly four times higher among Hispanic men than among white men, the analysis said.

It may not surprise you to learn that the number of deaths went up significantly during the pandemic.

Politico reported:

In the new study, the researchers examined trends in firearm deaths since 1990. They found gun deaths began to steadily increase in 2005, but the rise accelerated recently, with a 20% jump from 2019 to 2021.

Why did gun deaths rise so dramatically during the Covid-19 pandemic? That’s “a straightforward question with probably a complicated answer that no one really knows the answer to,” said Fleegler, an emergency medicine physician at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Factors could include disruption of people’s work and personal lives, higher gun sales, stress, and mental health issues, experts said.

The researchers counted more than 1.1 million gun deaths over those 32 years — about the same as the number of American deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the last three years.

That would also be right around when progressives started saying we needed to defund the police.

Did these black lives matter?

“when it comes to homicides, it is black men who are seeing the worst of it.”

Yep, it is a double whammy, in that most of those murders are also black. BLM’s narrative is that it does not matter unless they can extort money from other races. The whole narrative needs to be reset. Use scholarships for worthy blacks, kill affirmative action, purge incompetents of all races from business, government, etc. Put a stop to Ghetto lottery lawsuits over race.

      ConradCA in reply to JohnSmith100. | December 2, 2022 at 12:37 am

It’s a tool of the progressive fascists to manipulate and gain power fro blacks. The underlying problem is the ghetto gangster culture which embraced by a huge percentage of blacks. People who embrace this culture make terrible life choices which lead to failure. The Dems have taught them blame their failures on racism and this makes it impossible for them to change.

And?

They’re doing it to themselves, and instead of trying to change it, all of the ‘leaders’ of the so-called ‘black community’ are busy whining about those evil racist police.

Nothing is going to change because apparently they don’t WANT it to change.

But we got the po po out of the ghetto save black people? I am a binary thinker. Liberals are either really stupid, or this is what they intended.

Given the outcome, you’d almost think that white supremacists would be rooting for BLM, who has done a marvelous job at accomplishly what the white supremacists likely wanted at absolutely zero political cost.

Never has “we’re gonna kill you to save you” been as true.

No doubt the author, Dr. Rees, is a racist, just as were the authors of “The Bell Curve”, Mr. Murray and Mr. Herrnstein. How dare he !!

    Charles Murray, Facing Reality (2021),

“The charges of white privilege and systemic racism that are tearing the country apart float free of reality. Two known facts, long since documented beyond reasonable doubt, need to be brought into the open and incorporated into the way we think about public policy: American whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians have different violent crime rates and different means and distributions of cognitive ability. The allegations of racism in policing, college admissions, segregation in housing, and hiring and promotions in the workplace ignore the ways in which the problems that prompt the allegations of systemic racism are driven by these two realities.”

Culture, or in this case lack thereof, matters.

Curses! White supremacy again!

“Factors could include disruption of people’s work and personal lives, higher gun sales, stress, and mental health issues, experts said.”

Can we erase the “higher gun sales” please. It is as if there are only new guns and no “old” guns in circulation. Take the “assault weapons ban” which can’t be held up as any success because with the numbers staying the same for pre-ban and the added function post-ban “on the street”…. any “decrease” they claim proves it wasn’t the gun ban.

They had to select 32 years to get that million. (I thought they wanted a decrease in population to save the earth). Majority are suicides .. and yes.. the covid plandemic did impact that. As for black and black violence, yep…. canary meet coal mine for societal decay.

Paula in reply to alaskabob. | December 1, 2022 at 7:40 pm

Can we erase the “higher gun sales” please.

You can erase a lot of things. I doubt the increase was due to disruption of people’s work when criminals don’t work. Or gun sales since criminals don’t usually go shopping at a gun stores.

You might want to look into increased drug use, drug dealers. robberies, gangs and other criminal activity for answers.

      jb4 in reply to Paula. | December 1, 2022 at 8:28 pm

How about liberal DAs as a cause. If you make crime pay better by not prosecuting it, you will get a lot more of it. Witness shoplifting everywhere; in NJ, a rampant increase in car and catalytic converter theft.; and narcotics distribution, thanks to the fentanyl FJB has allowed across the border. More of any kind of enterprise requires more organization and order, which, for criminal gangs, comes at the point of a gun. I also would include criminal gangs coming across the border.

        Paula in reply to jb4. | December 1, 2022 at 9:20 pm

You said it better than I could.

        GWB in reply to jb4. | December 2, 2022 at 10:08 am

I would make it a little broader than “liberal DAs”. Even before the Soros-funded Progs, DAs had taken to working plea agreements to reduce their case loads. This has been discussed here in relation to gun charges and drug charges, where lots of folks in prison for “possession” should have been in jail for much more, or criminals waving guns about who should have spent a lot of time in jail for previous gun crimes.

It started as laziness and is ending in enthusiasm.

    JohnSmith100 in reply to alaskabob. | December 3, 2022 at 1:09 pm

Most of the guns in black hands are stolen, so gun control would only make victims helpless.

By the way, Kyle Rittenhouse is being sued, in a non SYG jurisdiction, and is seeking funding.

2smartforlibs | December 1, 2022 at 3:51 pm

And why wouldn’t it? Not bail, the truly ignorant think only blacks get arrested. No consequences. See a surefire reason to say why not.

Perhaps politics, like nature, abhorts a vacuum.

Here’s a basic statistic that may be surprising.

Firearms-related deaths in the US have hung steady for decades at around 30,000, with roughly 2/3 of those being suicides, and the rest homicides. (Accidents are in the noise, at under 500.) And since our population is growing and this is a number and not a rate, it actually represents an improving trend. The number has been so constant, it almost rated its own entry in the physical constants section of the Rubber Bible.

Now, suddenly, that changes in the COVID era:

According to the Pew Research Center, there were roughly 45,000 U.S. gun deaths in 2020. Over half of those (54 percent) were suicides and another 3 percent were “gun deaths that are unintentional, involved law enforcement or had undetermined circumstances.” This leaves 43 percent of those 45,000 — approximately 19,350 deaths — as gun homicides.

If you do the math, you end up with a 20% increase in homicides (24K), but a doubling of homicides. That such a long-term straight-line behavior has suddenly exploded is frightening. I have to presume it’s the result of all that world-class “unification” coming out of DC these days.

“you end up with a 20% increase in SUICIDES (24K)…”

My data-free conjectural take (and I’m going to say this in an admittedly blunt manner):

Suicide has been replaced by delusional narcissism as a result of the “all positives, no negatives” movements in education and discipline.

Depression still crumples some people but by that time they have more faculties about them leading to murder of others rather than offing themselves. People who should be Darwinized are instead killing others because their overinflated sense of self-worth says “it’s not me, it’s you”.

Black Lives Matter*

*not those.

Another down side to this is citizens like myself are more fearful about going to a large city. It may have an economic effect. Several years age fans in Baltimore were told to stay inside the stadium after violence occurred outside. they were told to shelter in place. There’s lots of money in sports, dining and tourism but l’m staying close to home.

More evidence that negroes are far and away an extremely violent race. It’s simply an undeniable fact of this world.

I’ve a friend who works vice in a large metro here in Missouri. Working girls advertise their services in urban tabloids, now mostly web ads in webzines, for men looking to pay for their fun. Almost all the working girls – especially black ones – plainly state, “No black men; no AA.” Why? The astronomically high incidents of black men beating to a pulp these working girls, then stealing their money. What are these girls gonna do? Call the cops?

Negroes are far and away an extremely violent race.

    henrybowman in reply to LB1901. | December 1, 2022 at 6:37 pm

I am confused by the phrasing. Is “AA” simply redundant, or does it refer to alcoholics, no affirmative action freebles, or something I haven’t imagined?

    healthguyfsu in reply to LB1901. | December 1, 2022 at 7:04 pm

Get out of here with your racist rhetoric.

There’s no reason to actively provoke racial animosity with your garbage behind an anonymous user handle.

Haha. The entire post by LaChance demonstrated the violent facts of black people, yet you did not condemn LaChance for highlighting these facts. Instead, you burb up hurty words against me for my conclusion based on those facts published by LaChance. *smh*

    amatuerwrangler in reply to LB1901. | December 1, 2022 at 7:36 pm

Actually, they do call the cops; maybe not in your friend’s city but they did in mine. We were quite adept at sorting the actual crimes from the “fail to pay” events. And with adequate evidence, arrests were made. But, yes, even the street walkers avoided black clientele.

    GWB in reply to LB1901. | December 1, 2022 at 7:37 pm

    “Working girls”? Oy vey.
And no, the violence is not a racial characteristic. It is a cultural one, however. And events (and Progressives – mostly Progressives) have conspired to try and keep blacks in certain cultures that glorify violence, practice an “honor culture”, and allow predation by gangs. But those cultures are by no means limited to blacks.

So, please peddle your racism elsewhere.

    VaGentleman in reply to LB1901. | December 1, 2022 at 7:53 pm

I think the divider is culture, not race. I have worked with many blacks in STEM, and they are no more violent than whites or others. They say that there are 2 black cultures today: the ghetto, gangster culture and the, for want of a better term, traditional family oriented culture. If you dig deeper into the numbers, you find that most violence in the major cities is localized to a small area within the greater black community.
Adding to the violence is the fact that 40-50% of black pregnancies are aborted, mostly among unwed mothers. The breakdown of the family unit is the real driver of the increase in violence, and blacks have disproportionately been affected by the liberal policies that weaken families.

Ghetto culture ~= “redneck” culture from 1850s.
So says Thomas Sowell in “Black Rednecks and White Liberals”.

alaskabob in reply to GWB. | December 2, 2022 at 1:12 am

The YouTube video by Sowell starts with how redneck culture whites were discriminated against when they moved up north and west …. Sowell doesn’t say “white” until enough in that one would first think of blacks. I remember a reporter asking a black woman in Chicago if she liked the Bill Cosby Show…. she said there was no such thing as a black doctor. They are so deep into their cultural bubble.. so engrained…. that generations are lost. Interestingly, Sowell pointed out how integration into the successful “non-redneck” culture was advanced by….Oberlin College. But that was over a century ago.

Where are the feminists demanding the numbers of females be increased to achieve equality with males?

Not a problem for libs…they will just claim they need to take the guns.

“Black lives matter* ”

[*except when taken by other black Americans]

When there’s no political hay to be made from it, nor, any fodder to gin up the perennially aggrieved mob of Dumb-o-crat “victims,” then, the death of a black American as a result of violent crime committed by criminals “of color” is not a phenomenon to be mourned and responded to with histrionics and agitation. So sayeth the media and the Dumb-o-crats.

More than 1.1 million people in the U.S. have died from guns since 1990, the analysis showed
Hmmmm, so as many people died of guns in 20 years as died from Wuhan Flu in 2 years? And Covid-19 is not a particularly lethal disease.

I wonder if that pediatrician wanted kids masked or to get the “vaccine”?

henrybowman in reply to GWB. | December 2, 2022 at 1:59 am

Well, it is when you fudge the death certificates.

The million dead is even with the fudged death certificates. And it isn’t that particularly deadly at that level.
I guess the comparison gets better with fewer Wuhan Flu deaths? Heh.

rates of gun-related homicide have been highest among Black men aged 20 to 24
I wonder who is killing them? It’s not the police. At least not according to the same statistics. It can’t be racist white concealed carry practitioners – because there just aren’t any defensive gun uses according to Shannon, of Moms Hate Guns. (Yeah, I know, I laughed like a hyena while typing that.)

Hmmmm, I wonder just who it could be….

I imagine there was a time when I cared about this, but uh, not my problem.

It’s not just a US phenomenon. Regardless of continent, Antarctica the exception, as a race blacks simply cannot get their $hit together.

MAJack in reply to MAJack. | December 2, 2022 at 7:50 am

And I meant to add, putting this 12% demographic in 85% of all TV commercials seems to have not helped, nor has removing Confederate statues. Facts are stubborn things.

Guns are racist. Also, gun-control laws are racist, as if they are effectively enforced, they will have a grossly disproportionate impact on Black males between the ages of 20-24. Also, young Black males between the ages of 20-24 are White Supremacist MAGA Republican Terrorist Racists, because they are disproportionately responsible for the shooting deaths of young Black males. It’s all so obvious.

NO – it’s NOT the GUNS, it’s the PEOPLE HOLDING THE GUNS!!

Now if all this carnage was created by those pesky old WHITE MEN you would see a push to FORBID/OUTLAW pesky old WHITE MEN from HAVING GUNS! In business you IDENTIFY the PROBLEM and then take measures to ELIMINATE the PROBLEM! If all these young black men cannot control themselves with a weapon then by all means they should not be ALLOWED to have one. In a lot of cases, I would bet that they aren’t allowed due to PRIOR CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES so that should be a no-brainer! When will the BLACK LEADERS get involved with TRYING TO STOP BLACK MEN FROM KILLING OTHER BLACK MEN?? FACE THE TRUTH!!!! NYC was a much safer place with Stop and Frisk!!

Solution? More opportunities for midnight basketball ala Clinton.

Xhosa/Zulu? Hutu/Tutsi? Kenyan elite/deplorables? The blade is still, by far, the preferred instrument in homicides.

Some, Select [Black] Lives Matter They are surely playing with the double-edged scalpel.

Well The Screaming D’s get a three-fer with this one.

— Decreases the surplus population, so they’re all on board with the WEF, without the expense of using their own bullets.

— Continuation of Madame Sanger’s depletion of the undesirables federalized continually since eugenics was in vogue.

— More shooting among Blacks provisions three inflaming sound-bites if you spin it right.

Pull out police, while you crash the economy n let the cartels deploy their foot soldiers,a and you know this is gonna follow. Brilliantly done, if you ignore ethics, morals, or cost in lives. I don’t wanna say this was cynically, knowingly done. I will say if the eau du brimstone fits, wear it for sniffy Joe.

Mephistopheles would be proud.

BierceAmbrose | December 3, 2022 at 3:32 pm

Now do fentanyl deaths.

I’m happy to note you mentioned the Defund the Police Movement. The US murder rate hit 110-year lows just prior to the BLM/Antifa riots and Defund the Police Movements. Since then, it has skyrocketed. The problem is very obvious, but the people doing this study refuse to acknowledge it, in favor of blaming guns. Not that they talk about gun deaths, not homicides. They also count suicides. Imagine statistics that use drug overdoses/suicides and call them adverse reactions to medication. You wouldn’t get away with it, but that is exactly what this group of people has done by classifying suicides as gun deaths. Black men, usually young black men, commit half of all homicides in the US. The victims are other blacks, usually young black men. Half of all homicides occur in just 2% of all US counties, while 50% of all counties have zero homicides. The problem is a social issue in the black community, but when it’s pointed out, we are called racist. You can not solve a problem until you acknowledge it, so this problem will continue, which I suspect is what the anti-gun proponents want.

I should have proofread before posting. It should have read: “Note that they talk about gun deaths, not homicides.”
