Cancel Culture Comes for Dr. Ben Carson in Renaming of Detroit School

Cancel Culture Comes for Dr. Ben Carson in Renaming of Detroit School

“Dr. Carson is the epitome of the American dream. Only in our country could a poor boy from the inner city grow up to be a world-renowned neurosurgeon, presidential candidate, and Cabinet secretary.”

The Detroit school board is in the process of renaming a handful of schools, a new favorite pastime of progressives in education.

One of the schools they are renaming is the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine, which is named for Republican Dr. Ben Carson, who ran for president in 2016 and then worked in the Trump administration.

Do you think Carson’s work in the Trump administration had something to do with this?

Bridge Michigan reports:

Detroit renames school honoring Ben Carson, removing honor for Trump appointee

The Detroit school board struck a compromise between students at East English Village Preparatory Academy and the alumni of the closed Finney High School, in a debate over whether to change the former’s name.

The school, which sits on the grounds that once housed Finney High, will now be named East English Village Preparatory Academy at Finney…

Also Tuesday night, the board approved changing the name of the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine to Crockett Midtown High School of Science and Medicine. The push to change the name came as its namesake — a renowned neurosurgeon — courted controversy during his tenure as housing secretary in the Trump administration. There was no debate about the name change at Tuesday’s meeting. An overwhelming majority of students, alumni, staff, parents, and community favored a name change.

The new name recognizes Dr. Ethelene Crockett, the first African American woman in Michigan to become board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.

This is cancel culture, plain and simple.

Andrew Hughes worked in the Department of Housing and Urban Development with Carson. He and dozens of other people from the department came to Carson’s defense in an opinion piece for FOX News:

We worked for Dr. Ben Carson. We know Dr. Ben Carson. Canceling him is just not right.

Education is the gateway to opportunity. It’s the medicine that cures most ails, and it is the means by which we equip our next generations with the tools they need to confront the challenges of the future. The schools we construct and the names of the individuals we honor on our school buildings stand as a good barometer for the sort of people we want our young people to emulate.

That’s why we are so perturbed that in mid-November, the Detroit School Board voted to change the name of the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine despite an administrative recommendation and student poll to keep the name as is…

We, former staff for Dr. Carson at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, write to set the record straight and celebrate the incredible accomplishments of the good doctor, with the hope that more focus is shined on students and less on perceived political slights…

Dr. Carson is the epitome of the American dream. Only in our country could a poor boy from the inner city grow up to be a world-renowned neurosurgeon, presidential candidate, and Cabinet secretary. He personifies the very promise of America.

Lots of others are also standing up for Carson:

This isn’t right and it shouldn’t stand.

A righteous and honorable man.
This would be a travesty if the name changes goes through.

This board of indoctrination should be, but isn’t, ashamed. A real inspiration from the ‘hood to world renowned brain surgeon and cabinet Secretary, and these shallow fools/tools wanting to cancel him.

the problem is that he did it WITHOUT dumbing down the curriculum or quotas. He did it on his own merit – his and his mother’s (what an amazing woman!) hard work and initiative. He is an example of being able to succeed outside of the plantation, and we CANNOT have that as an example of black success. FULL STOP.

So a school named after a Black man is being cancelled (renamed) and the Left isn’t screaming?

I guess it must be a case of ‘yo ain’t Black if you don’t vote Democrat’.

Yet again the Left reveals itself to be the party of power, privilege, and hypocrisy.

Evil, thy name is Leftism.

They despise his success because it is opposite to everything that they believe. Ben make it on his own. Ben bad. Case closed.

“Do you think Carson’s work in the Trump administration had something to do with this?”
Nah. I’m sure it was because his family owned slaves.

I wonder if Biden would explain it as “you ain’t black” enough? You just can’t have someone succeeding off the inner city plantation, sets the wrong example.

This people really don’t know when to quit. I wonder if the vax is making them worst. Wonder if there is a mind control ingredient in the vax or these idiots are just coming out of their shell.

Easily fixed. For every school cancelled, find 10 schools in conservative areas and name them for the great Dr. Carson. As a side note, they might be able to remove his name but they can’t eliminate the man, nor his brilliance, accomplishments, common sense, and Hollywood good looks.

Actually, if Dr. Carson looked at the performance of his former namesake high school, he would demand that they remove his name. When I first became aware of this school I thought it must be a magnet for high achievers. After all it is called the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine.

It was several years ago but I’m sure it’s only gotten worse. At the time less than 1% of the students tested at grade level in math and science and were deemed qualified to go to college. ONE PERCENT!

Like I said, Dr. Carson should say thank you.

They should rename the school. How about “Low Expectations Academy”?

He should publicly disown any relationship with the facility, the failed community and demand that his name and reference to him be removed.

does anybody think Dr. Carson even cares???
