Nevada Senate Race Called For Democrat Cortez Masto; Democrats Retain Control Of Senate

If Walker loses in Georgia, the GOP will have lost a Senate seat in the 2022 midterms.

Nevada finally got around to counting (and “curing“) their ballots. Democrat Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto has won her reelection bid in Nevada. Democrats now have the 50 Senators (plus VP Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote) they need to retain control of the upper chamber.

If Republican Herschel Walker loses in next month’s Georgia runoff, the GOP will have lost a Senate seat in the 2022 midterms.

NBC News reports:

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, the first Latina elected to the Senate, will hold onto her seat in Nevada after enduring a bruising campaign against Republican Adam Laxalt, who fell short of ousting the Democrat despite severe midterm headwinds, NBC News projects.

The outcome follows days of protracted mail-in ballot counting, with the results resting largely with the state’s most populous county, Clark County, which posted updates once a day since Tuesday. A race long predicted to be within the margin of error was indeed close through the end.

. . . . Laxalt handily won the state’s 15 rural counties, in some counties winning 80 percent of the vote, while Cortez Masto steadily led the reliably blue Clark County, home of Las Vegas.

The two candidates wrestled over Washoe County, a purple county that’s the second largest in the state.

It is unclear at this time if Laxalt will request a recount, but we will keep you updated.

    My real concern is not this, as depressing as this is (if it really is final). My worry is future elections. Democrats will never lose unless election process are fixed and not enough republicans seem particularly concerned about fixing them or even recognizing there is a problem.

      The election process will be “fixed”, in favor of the Democrat Party. They will have control of both Houses of Congress and will pass HR1. Though HR1 is blatantly un-Constitutional, it will be enforced by the FBI, DOJ, IRS, BATFE and any other agency that has armed agents. If SCOTUS finds it un-Constitutional, SCOTUS will be ignored.

      What do you mean by fixed? Some people firmly believe that the GOP should try to pick up on its ballot harvesting.. IOW fight fire with fire. I think states need to return to Voting in Person. My fear is someone will bitch about the very idea of a ballot (they are paper) and insist the whole process becomes virtual…

Well, the good news is that a President Harris will still not be able to get a VP through who isn’t acceptable to at least some Republicans, because they will now control the House.

    We don’t know that yet, Milhouse. I’m just sick to my stomach right now.

    I hope your optimism is well founded.

    My current estimate, from looking at the remaining uncalled races on NPR. is that the Republicans win the House by 1, or lose by 1. That means that it is a tossup. Given that this administration has delivered the worst policies, execution and leadership in decades on important issues – like inflation, crime, immigration – and especially to the poorest among us, this election result is shocking and every last one of Republican leadership should be replaced.

          Of course we do, but if you’re going to give examples, you should give them, not point to other people who aren’t in the House. If you can’t think of any, then do some research. Pointing to senators and saying “There are probably reps who are like them” is just lazy.

          I don’t think it’s lazy in terms of research, but maybe in terms of critical thought. It seems that a lot of thoughts are flying around that have zero basis in reality and are covered by blanket, unsubstantiated “uniparty” and “GOPe” and blahblahblah coding that is intended to be meaningful only to those who already think that way. Any time it’s challenged or questioned, they just switch to something else or point to the same villains, regardless of whether or not it’s relevant. Kind of disappointing, really, since you can’t argue with such people because what they so fervently believe isn’t grounded in reality.

      Um, yes, of course it does, because it’s not a law that can be broken. Either a person is VP or they are not. If a replacement VP is not confirmed by both houses, that person is not the VP, and no amount of “ignoring the law” can change that. They will not be able to move into the Naval Observatory or chair the senate. The Secret Service will not protect them. Etc.

If McConnell and McCarthy aren’t replaced, the GOP is dead.

Maybe some potential legal challenges to the ballots process? Maybe a recount? Who knows? Isn’t it just media projections and s not official? And there has been no concession to my knowledge. Not getting drunk (again) until it’s official.

So utterly demoralizing. The big question is how does Walker become senator?

A 1 seat majority is a lot worst than a tied senate.

    Infinitely worse since they will be able to overcome Manchin’s objection to blowing up the filibuster. Very worrying indeed.

      There will be some incident that demands repeal of the filibuster and then the following two years will cement one party rule. Amnesty followed by citizenship. Ranked voting although the states used to have the constitutional power…. as Mark Steyn puts it, “don’t wave that Constitution in my face”… since it means less and less. Have to hand it to the Dems/Left… they know how to win (with a little help from the Alphabet agencies?) So the people have spoken and they want to be Venezuela.       I agree 100% which is why this is frightening. My problem is I just can’t think of a scenario where the story of the runoff is Trump and Walker wins.

      Glenn Youngkin successfully removed Trump from his 2021 race for VA governor but he both had a lot more time and had a lot more skill.

This is attributable to Turtle McConnell not funding races like he should have. It may have made all the difference.

AZ – Masters $9m vs Kelly $73m
GA – Walker $32m vs Warnock $76m
NV – Laxalt $12m vs Cortes $47m

    All are Trump endorsed Republicans. In looking back, I am surprised that McConnell didn’t whip enough Republicans to find Trump guilty on the first Bill of Impeachment.

    McConnell is pure GOPe. He needs to go away.

    That McConnell would pull funding from GOP senate candidates solely because they wouldn’t kiss his ring and back him as minority leader speaks to his destructive selfishness. Obtaining pledges of loyalty was more important to him than winning control of the senate.

    I’m no McConnell fan but this is misleading. His Senate Leadership Fund super PAC spent $42 million in Ga. and $28 million in Nevada. Bolduc said he would not support McConnel as Senate leader, nonetheless that same super PAC spent millions in NH until they pulled out at the end of October.

      Fair enough, but, what about Blake Masters? Didn’t McConnell leave him in the lurch, funding-wise, needlessly diverting funds to bolster Murkowski in Alaska, instead? That’s what I had read, in the Federalist.

        Arizona saw 53 million for Blake Masters which should end the idea he was underfunded

        Georgia saw 72 million for Walker

        In NC ted Budd was backed by 65 million

        Nevada was 57 million

        NH was 23 million

        Your numbers are made up, they neither match outside spending, nor do they match total spending, and they don’t match direct campaign spending either.

        It is possible Lou Dobbs was just lazy or sloppy but those numbers are 100% fake.

        The only person Blake Masters has to blame for his defeat is Blake Masters.

      Yes and no. Very over simplified, there are two kinds of elections now.

      Some States, Alabama for example, retain the traditional vote in person on election day with absentee ballots reserved for military and those who will be absent on election day. In these elections the traditional campaign of convincing voters to go out and vote on election day still works.

      Other States have largely abandoned election day and in person voting. They mail out ballots to registered voters. Some States do so for all voters, some just for those who ask but are issued on a no excuse basis. In these States the traditional campaign doesn’t work anymore. Instead of getting n voters to come to the poll on a single election day we need to shift to a strategy of collecting ballots.

      The way elections are conducted in many States has changed. If our leadership, candidates and voters refuse to adapt to this new environment we will not remain competitive in these States. Adapt or die.

    If you look at the voter analysis, the majority of voters by far (>60%) were over the age of 45. I am an old Gen-X born in 67. I cant blame this on the younger generations, it wasn’t them, it was us. This falls completely on the hands of boomers, Gen X and older Gen Z. We will get exactly what we asked for….

        Older female voters, particularly college educated have a hang up about abortion and in some races it mattered enough for them to impact their vote.

        IMO, when McCarthy and Graham proposed the next r majority would pass federal abortion legislation it spooked some of these voters in blue States that were concerned the federal legislation would be more restrictive than their current State laws.

        Add to that several ballot props on abortion, in half dozen or so States, and it becomes a bigger driver for voting.

        You’d be surprised. The left has worked long and hard to convince everyone (men and women) that abortion is about a woman’s body, her choice, her healthcare, etc. That’s been going on since the 70’s (at least) and it’s stuck. That’s why the majority of all Americans (men and women) support abortion up to 15-weeks, in cases of rape, incest, health of the mother. It’s an ideology, in other words, not a personal decision by voters based on the likelihood of their wanting one. I don’t know the stats, but I would venture that the majority of women who support abortion “rights” (see what they did there?) are women who would never ever dream of having one themselves.

      R won every age demo over 30 years old. The d/prog crushed it with those under 30. The College town votes went 80/20 some better than that to d/prog. The d/prog organized themselves and the R didn’t compete, for the most part, in college towns.

      Single women of every age demo broke 70% for d/prog. Married women went R but far less solidly. 25% of voters say abortion was the issue they voted on. More had it as the #2 issue behind inflation or economy.

        It didn’t help that some candidates were out there talking a complete abortion ban, including in the case of rape, incest, life of the mother. Americans as a whole do not support that at all, and pushing it is a disaster.

        Americans want SOME abortions legal: rape, incest, health of the mother. A majority are also okay with a 15-week/first trimester limit. They do not want abortion to the moment of birth, but if they have to be choose between NO abortion under any circumstances and abortion on demand until the moment of birth, they pick the latter. Forcing that choice is a mistake because it is out of touch with what voters actually want and will cost votes. Further, it will make more radical pro-abortion laws not just possible but likely.

        We have to back off on the whole total ban thing at least until we can get the first part done: 15-weeks. The vast majority of Americans are good with that, prefer it to second or third term abortions in fact. Push anything more, and it’s going to be full-term abortion on demand winning.

          Politically on abortion at the National level discretion is the better part of valor. The Dobbs decision gets us back to the pre Roe status quo ante where the States decide. IMO, from a political standpoint, embracing Federalism is way forward. Keep DC out of it, other than the Hyde amendment and let each State set their own course even perhaps especially when we disagree.

          From a moral and logical aspect I believe abortion is a crime against the innocent. The baby had no say in their conception. Again, my personal view which isn’t close to the majority opinion. A rape, and practically all incest is not consensual, should be dealt with by an ER visit and offering the morning after pill to the victim. There isn’t a pregnancy yet at that point which means it’s birth control, IMO. Obviously opinions vary a great deal on all the issues surrounding abortion.

          Which is why I believe the voters of each State can all exercise their own judgment and by election of politicians who share their views or via initiative and set the policy which reflects the choices of that State. Folks can then move to a State that reflects their values if their values aren’t reflected in their current State. National legislation precludes that choice. I truly believe Federalism is the right answer for this issue.

It infuriates me what the left has done to our elections. It was such a simple process that has now been corrupted and manipulated. Molly Hemingway at The Federalist is saying the GOP will have to learn to play the ballot game, and I have to agree. For now. Here’s hoping and praying the right can be competitive and win, so we can at some point in the near future we can get states and their voting back to sane and simple and honest.

    Of course they cheated, but the wave was supposed to overcome that; I know of no reason to suppose they cheated more this time than last time, so the failure of the wave to appear is not because it was hidden by the cheating but because it didn’t happen.

    And despite the fact that we know they cheated, there is no evidence for it, so we can’t produce such evidence. In principle it’s possible that they had a sudden change of heart and didn’t cheat this time. Yes, I’ll wait for you to stop laughing, get up off the floor, and dust yourself off, but it’s technically possible, and if it did happen we wouldn’t know about it.

      Audit the vote is tantamount to denial, where those assembled are now viable candidates for a death sentence in a Democrat state.

    The left is actually noting that both Biden and Fetterman ran “basement” contests against Trump/Trump candidates and won. They’re gleeful. I’m disgusted. They’re talking about how that can be a strategy going forward, let the Trump candidates talk and wail about 2020, while the Dem hides. Voters in the middle loathe anything Trump and will vote D, as a result of not hearing much from the Democrat him or herself.

      Basement campaigning is literally just a modern day version of a front porch campaign. What’s shocking is how the Dems and the media are suddenly backing off their historical position that debates are good things as part of an election contest, especially when it comes to certain candidates.

        It’s not shocking at all. They know their candidates would be eviscerated in debates with strong GOP candidates (of which this cycle, there were few) and learned from Hidin’ Biden that the less their horrific candidates are heard from the better. Of course they will pimp that as a plus.

    How many Democrat governors has Pennsylvania had in a row now? The only way Republicans can be competitive in statewide elections now is for them to learn how to ballot harvest. It’s no longer enough to compete for votes, we need to get ballots in the hands of every Republican and right leaning independent.
