NYT Tries to Twist Brutal Attack on Woman, Killing of a Dog Into a Need for Social Justice

One person said: “I’m a New York liberal. I am absolutely for people getting the help they need. But this person is attacking people and killing dogs. He’s targeting women and dogs. He’s violent.”

On August 3rd, Jessica Chrustic said a man in Prospect Park, located in Brooklyn, attacked her and her dog with urine and a giant stick.

Unfortunately, the dog died.

How does John Leland at The New York Times frame the story? Good Lord:

Real-world ethics question: In a well-used city park, a man with a history of erratic behavior attacks a dog and its owner with a stick; five days later, the dog dies. The man is Black, the dog owner white; the adjoining neighborhood is famously progressive, often critical of the police and jail system. At the same time, crime is up in the neighborhood, with attacks by emotionally disturbed people around the city putting some residents on edge.

In a dog-loving, progressive enclave, where pushing law and order can clash with calls for social justice, what’s the right thing to do? How do you protect the public without furthering injustice against this man?

Chrustic’s neighborhood has seen a 50% rise in serious crimes from two years ago.

Thing is, the attacker is a regular in the park, making people nervous and scared regularly. It has nothing to do with the color of his skin or appearance:

She had seen the man before — tall, with dreadlocks wrapped in a turban, carrying a long staff and often muttering to himself or cursing — and she usually kept her distance. But this morning there was no room to avoid him.

She was especially frustrated that the man, who was well known to people in the park, had not been arrested. “You have a person who is walking around the park who is violent and needs to be removed,” she said. “He’s known by the community. It’s disheartening.”

It seems like Leland cannot believe that most people in this “progressive enclave” want the man to be punished for his crime.

Chrustic posted about the attack on Nextdoor. Some responded negatively, but she said something that reminds people this isn’t a left or right issue: “And people also take it as an opportunity to vent. It becomes a politically divisive conversation I have no interest in being a part of.”

Nicole Haddad suffered a similar attack three years ago. It left her shaken to the point where she needed “behavioral specialists and anti-anxiety medication” (emphasis mine):

“When I read Jessica’s post, I got really, really triggered,” she said. “I just knew the journey that Jessica was going to be in for, because it’s caused me emotional and financial duress. I reached out to her immediately.” The two women compared information and concluded that their dogs were attacked by the same man. To the people who focused more on social justice than removing a threat, Ms. Haddad said: “I tell those people to shut up. They don’t have a leg to stand on.

“I don’t care that it’s being divisive, and that people don’t want to see this guy die in Rikers Island,” Ms. Haddad added. “I’m a New York liberal. I am absolutely for people getting the help they need. But this person is attacking people and killing dogs. He’s targeting women and dogs. He’s violent. He should not be in the park. He should be locked up and paying for his actions.”

Obviously, the man has mental health issues.

Yes, he needs help. Yes, he needs to be held accountable for his actions.

It has nothing to do with the color of their skin. It has everything to do with people making any situation a racist, sexist, blah blah blah situation.

It has everything to do with a city lacking officers because the bigwigs mistreat them and have a lax attitude toward crime.

You don’t have to be Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent, or whatever to be tough on crime. You don’t have to be any of those to know homelessness is a problem, mainly affecting those with mental illness.

But no one, absolutely no one, should be scared or worried about taking a walk.

You cannot allow dangerous people to remain on the streets.

“attacked her and her dog with urine and a giant stick.”
And this is why you don’t let dyslexics read The Autobiography of Teddy Roosevelt.

Many of these progressive bastions have removed the criminal whackos from the normal expectations of society. They are to a large degree immunized from consequences for what they do to others. This is the natural result of deliberate policy choices that places criminals outside the reach of the law but leaves them within society. This turns the historical practice of outlawing on its head.

And it began in the school system. Your kid has mental health issues that require an IEP? Then physically attacking their classmates is just a symptom of his disability and you cannot punish him for it. Another student is injured? Blame the teacher. The teacher is responsible for keeping order in the Varied Exceptionalities classes. This teacher who is special education trained, but whose specialty area is learning disabilities, not behavioral disabilities – and has 22 student all to herself, 12 of which have violent tendancies and can attack someone without warning….. wonder why there is a teacher shortage?

No sympathy. They’re getting exactly what they said they wanted, and the actual solution is something they will not allow. Too bad a dog had to die over it, I’m betting that dog was smart enough to recognize a criminal when he ran into one.

Live by the double-edged scalpel, DIE by the scalpel. Social justice anywhere is injustice everywhere. Lose your Pro-Choice ethical religion.

The NYT staff and owners need their heads continuously cracked open by the likes of this lunatic. Still, they’ll never get it.

Secession is coming.

Recidivism among perps shot dead is ZERO

Wasn’t there a recent Federal ruling 2a elsewhere on LI?

Frankly, a dog’s life is worth more than that of the perp. I raised German shepherd’s for about 30 years and Rottweilers for another 20 years, it was only a year ago that I shut down the kennel.

Both are great breeds, Both are very strong, Both love their masters more than their own lives. Both would tear one of those SOBs apart.

You raised two of my very favorite breeds. Thank you.

JohnSmith100 in reply to The Gentle Grizzly. | October 8, 2022 at 2:38 pm

I loved both breeds, I still have one 130lb 3 year old male Rottweiler. I just got too old to be able to manhandle them. They need a firm hand over the first year, kind of like raising children well, giving them the right balance of love and disipline.

Does John Leland think that more black people are hurt by a black criminal being punished than they are getting beaten with a stick and pissed on?

These narcissistic, self-congratulatory, virtue-signaling Brooklyn regressives voted for and enabled the very socioeconomic consequences — brazen attacks by sociopaths and/or mentally disturbed homeless people, the undermining of police and public safety, and, kid gloves treatment of criminals by prosecutors — which they’re now reaping and complaining about. I have no sympathy for them. These are the same idiots who perpetually allege that the criminal justice system is racist, jails are racist, prosecutions are racist, etc.

The only NYC residents I feel sympathy for are those who’ve ceased voting for Dumb-o-crats.

The Pravda Times’ idiotic take is exactly the kind of juvenile stupidity that the Dumb-o-crats’ perennial and indefensible coddling of criminals and corrosive racial obsessions produce.

I’ll also add that these Dumb-o-crat regressives living in urban areas are appallingly naive and delusional about their own safety. They don’t take responsibility for their own safety and they believe — naively — that passersby will come to their aid in the event of a violent attack.

Sure, Dumb-o-crat pols have made it ridiculously onerous to purchase pepper sprays/mace sprays for self-defense, but, it’s utterly insane to live in an urban area and not carry self-defense sprays on one’s person.

I don’t go anywhere in my city without a Sabre/Mace pepper gel canister in one pocket and Mace “triple” combo spray (tear gas, pepper spray and UV dye mix) in the other pocket.

NYC needs lunatic asylums and an open carry law.
You don’t like what I have to say? Then you’ll just have to continue to put up with these problems or move away.

I was born, grew up in, and lived in NYC all my life. I left 6 months after Dinkins came into office when Da City started to go downhill; smartest thing I ever did.

my father passed a few years ago. A few years before that he wanted me to can some hot peppers for him, I did not get to them right away, they started to dry out. I did not know that they got hotter that way. First I got some in the side of my eye, I went to the bathroom to flust the eye and a d decided to urinate, that did not go very well.

Any, we are looking at what may be very turbulent times ahead, I thin that raising, drying and then grinding those peppers into a powder would make a very good weapon. Maybe use small PVC cannons to dispense large amounts of hot pepper powder? Other stuff could be added, glass, nails, rock salt, lots of possibilities.

I am a big believer in cultivating lots of skills and of buying less and making more. Sweat equity saves a lot on taxes. Overall, government takes half of what we earn as a wage slaves.

So called “mental health experts” are a prime cause of some of our country’s crime problems today. Closing insane asylums, decades ago, has imposed tens of thousands of unsupervised crazies upon the rest of us. Some of these become homeless, unable to exist in a normal society. Many resort to crime, just to survive. Others have unpredictable, violent reactions to everyday life.

One lady and a well trained Rottweiler. Problem solved. Funny that even in the face of what their policies have created, now with tragic consequences, the progressives continue to march down the road trapped in a hell of their own making without seeing it’s their fault.
Progressivism is a mental disorder

I have sympathy for the dogs, but none for the “I’m a New York liberal”. It’s NY liberals that create these problems. In fact, I’d rather the dog was the survivor.

As a kid, in my neighborhood, that fellow would not have survived more than a few minutes. And he would not have survived more than a few seconds in the neighborhood nearby, where black folks lived.

The cops and judicial system protect these people.
A nation of pussies gets what it deserves.

Yeah, if he pulled that shit in East New York he’d be found in an alley w/ his throat cut faster than you can say “unsolved homicide.”

Dangerous lunatics need to be permanently removed from society. Locked up or sent to the “promised land”, makes no difference.

Special thanks to ACLU, which filed lawsuits closing most of our insane asylums and sent these nuts into “community halfway houses”.
These people belong in padded cells with heavy wire mesh on the windows and chains on the doors.

He wasn’t blocking an abortion clinic so it doesn’t count.

“Although psychiatric hospitals still exist, the dearth of long-term care options for the mentally ill in the U.S. is acute. State-run psychiatric facilities house 45,000 patients, less than a tenth of the number of patients they did in 1955.

Since 1970, the decline in beds is an even greater 77.4 percent.”

So with all the money thrown about by DC recently how much went to increasing our mental health treatment and/or incarceration capacity? How many beds were restored to the system? New or re-opened facilities?

Or did one old movie make this a taboo subject?

Dennis in reply to Gosport. | October 8, 2022 at 6:23 pm

Yeah, obviously this guy can’t be allowed to go around randomly attacking people, but sending him to a mental hospital where doctors can try to figure out what’s wrong w/ him seems more productive than just locking him in a cage.

Weirdly enough, given that I have pretty much despised the NYT for at least a decade, I actually think their treatment was uncharacteristically even-handed.

Don’t get me wrong: I think the “progressives” who sided with the attacker are complete lunatics. Still, in this one instance, I can’t find fault with the NYT story. I wish they’d be as even handed on everything else; alas, this was a one-off.

This is what happens when thugs are allowed to roam the streets without fear of spending any time in jail

I disagree with the premise of this article. I think the NYT piece was spot on. When something like this happens, when confronted with the very real consequences of their politics, what is a good Park Slope liberal to do? When a Park Slope liberal is getting what she voted for, good and hard, how should she react? And more to the point how should her friends and neighbors, who haven’t personally experienced it, react? Should they change their entire world view just because it’s their friend and neighbor who was the victim this time, after they stood strong and didn’t change anything when it was someone else? How deep does the leftist brainwashing run? That’s the interesting question this story poses, and that’s what the NYT focused on.
