‘I Just Explained’: Karine Jean-Pierre Melts Down When Media Doesn’t Buy Her Explanation for Why Biden Asked for Dead Congresswoman
Biden appeared shocked that the late Rep. Jackie Walorski wasn’t at a conference on Wednesday. She passed away in a car accident in August.

Walorski co-sponsored the childhood hunger bill Biden celebrated at the conference. He also praised Sen. Mike Braun, Sen. Cory Booker, and Rep. Jim McGovern.

People from the mainstream media hammered Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre over the gaffe. She melted down when the friendly reporters didn’t buy her excuses.
It all started when ABC News reporter Cecilia Vega asked Jean-Pierre what happened at the event when Biden asked for Walorski.
Jean-Pierre answered that Biden “was acknowledging her incredible work…She was on his mind…top of mind.”

My religious tradition says that the deceased attend their children’s and grandchildren’s weddings. In my community it is common for a speaker to acknowledge their presence and welcome them to the event. It is unheard of for the speaker to look around for them!

As one reaches ones late 70s, probably more than half the people you know are dead. It gets difficult to keep track. If there was a teleprompter, it was not used effectively.
I hope that any President would be too busy taking care of the nation’s business to spend a lot of time rehearing remarks introducing a conference on hunger. So, I am not surprised that the President would walk into the room unrehearsed and unbriefed.
If he’s too busy to prepare a good job of it, he’s too important to be doing it at all.
A more honest and compassionate answer would have gone something like this:
“This was an important and emotional day. The Congresswoman was clearly top of mind when the president asked for her. One way to look at it was that he was calling out to her presence in the the room, her presence in the day’s accomplishments that she had worked so hard for during her life. Her presence looking down on her family, friends and colleagues from heaven. Some people will totally get that and understand. I understand that that may look confusing to some other people who don’t think in those terms.
And also, it’s entirely possible that the president was caught in the moment and the emotions and just momentarily forgot she was dead because this day was so much about her life’s work. So in that sense she was indeed in the room.”
Not necessarily more honest but certainly a better lie.
