“The left is losing the battle for the minds of the American electorate, Morning Consult research shows”

The sharpest move towards conservatism is among minorities. “In five years, the liberal advantage among Hispanics went from a whooping 25 points to just 5 points.”

There are many explanations and reasons for why the left is so aggressive, capturing institutions like academia and relentlessly driving out anyone who disagrees. There was an important article about this phenomenon in The NY Sun, The Way of the Dodo: Conservative Professors Confront the Future:

The ranks of right-leaning academics are dwindling, as college campuses trend toward ideological homogeneity and some professors are choosing to leave as they lament the failed promises of liberal education in America….

Nearly a quarter of American academics favor ousting a colleague for having a so-called wrong opinion about hot-button topics like immigration, according to a recent study from a libertarian think tank, the CATO Institute.

Another study, by the Challey Institute for Global Innovation, notes that nearly 70 percent of students believe they should report a professor who says something they deem offensive.

We see this also in a recent survey showing the liberal college students are far more intolerant of conservative students than vice versa:

46% said they would probably/definitely not room with someone who supported the opposing presidential candidate in 2020 (62% of Dems, 28% of GOP)

The reasons are complex, but one that can’t be ignored is that political leftism is like the Wizard of Oz, visible power and strength that does not reflect reality. They control the commanding heights of academia, the culture, and increasingly corporations, but liberalism as a self-identification is falling, particularly among the core-constituency of non-whites.

So finds a recent Morning Consult survey looking not just at the present but at the trend in the past five years, America Has Become Less Liberal, but Not Necessarily More Conservative:

The left is losing the battle for the minds of the American electorate, Morning Consult research shows, with voters decreasingly identifying as liberal in recent years. But that doesn’t mean the country is lurching to the right….

The share of the electorate who identifies as “very liberal,” “liberal” or “somewhat liberal” on a seven-point scale has dropped over the past five years, from 34% to 27%, according to extensive annual Morning Consult survey research conducted among more than 8.6 million U.S. voters since 2017.

Compared with 2017, the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, the decline in liberal self-identification has not led to a major increase in conservative alignment, the most prominent ideology in U.S. politics, among the overall electorate. Rather, the proportion of voters who said they were moderate or uncertain about their ideology made up the difference.

Because Democrats are better at wielding and gaining political power, however, the ideological preference for conservatism does not translate directly into Republican votes:

Some Democratic pollsters noted that ideology is not equivalent to vote choice, and indeed, Morning Consult/Politico surveys have shown Democrats with a congressional generic ballot advantage over Republicans with all moderate voters (though independents are more evenly divided). Some have also shaken off the ideological labels entirely, alluding to the intraparty semantic debate over whether Democrats are “liberal” or “progressive.”

Maybe that’s a message to Republicans – in a country where conservatives (45%) are almost double (25%) liberals, conservatism is a winning message.

But there are findings in the Morning Consult poll that also reflect a recent shift among non-whites (“minorities”) towards conservatism. That is consistent with a dramatic shift particularly among Hispanics away from Democrats.

There’s a lesson here.

The left thinks more violence and wokeness will stop the migration of non whites?

Because who doesn’t want to live in a country ruled by Democrats, where thugs who would just as soon punch you in the brains as pop open a beer are given cookies and milk every morning by judges and prosecutors, patted on the head, and sent forth on the streets to satisfy their inclinations?

Prof – I appreciate your sentiment, but the left owns:
Post-secondary education
k-12 education
teachers’ unions
Hollywood
Journalism – print, internet and broadcast
Corporate boardrooms
twitter
facebook
American Medical Assoc.
ABA
etc

Aren’t you perhaps whistling past the graveyard? LI is great, but is there anyone on the right who is willing and able to play sustained offense?

You missed Google which is way more powerful than FB or TWTR. Search result manipulation likely swung the last election.

    Book publishing.

I would add that they also own city councils and the leadership of most federal agencies, perhaps most of our public servants. Much of this won’t change unless an overwhelming number of people stop voting Dem, and even then I suspect it would take at least a generation to change. By then it may well be too late.

The Democrats have a much better chance of convincing me of their argument…if they do not have to lie about it….

Just saying…..

They deeper question is why they are shifting? Answer is the rampant insanity of the modern d/prog party. These people are not changing their viewpoints. Instead they are choosing to publicly identify with political party or political label that most closely tracks their long-standing views.

The d/prog lost their self control and have championed: Trans dudes in the girls locker room, racial discrimination disguised as affirmative action, CRT/Equity hogwash, Maoist struggle sessions to belittle, breakdown and indoctrinate those who disagree. The d/prog power structure of blue enclaves allowed mass riots, then decided that daily abuse by criminals was the price average citizens should pay to make themselves feel better.

Not content with shipping jobs overseas they decided to allow open borders and import an underclass. Voters grew weary of Iraq and Afghanistan so those ended in various levels of failure but the establishment needed a new testing ground for the toys made by our defense industry so we use Ukraine; while seemingly ignoring the potential for a direct confrontation with Russia.

We had achieved N American energy independence which conflicted with a green utopian ideal, while also limiting the amount of kickbacks, payoffs, graft and grift so d/prog went all in to destroy that. Now we have high energy costs, high food costs, rampant inflation.

All that in addition to the above items, not to mention a cohort of kids cheated out of two years of education and social development due to Rona policies that the CDC quietly admitted were wrong just this week. Plus the exposure of grooming behaviour among teachers and physicians performing mutilation of children.

Who wouldn’t find another political party? The d/prog still don’t understand how wide and deep the anger in the Nation actually is. They find out in November.

It would be great if you were right. I’m unsure…not calling you wrong, just unsure because we have quite the echo chamber on this site.

CommoChief in reply to healthguyfsu. | August 20, 2022 at 8:49 am

True this site is center right. On the other hand, we all live and interact in the real world with the folks who see these same things. That list of reasons why folks change political parties or labels wasn’t exhaustive.

That’s just the highlights of the last 2.5 years and demonstrates the intensity and frequency of the pace and depth of change the d/prog are attempting. Look at the polling on these issues. The majority of voters are not onboard with these changes.

We shouldn’t take anything for granted but we can also recognize that the overreach by d/prog puts us at a tactical advantage for the midterms. Assuming our candidates and the party establishment don’t fumble the opportunity by refusing to campaign on the issues voters care about. McConnell publicly running down our Senate candidates shows the bipartisan nature of the disconnect between voters and permanent denizens of DC.

As I’ve been preaching for many years now, the fastest growing party in America is the unaffiliated independent “party”. Party loyalists became so disgruntled with the Uniparty that rather than switch to the “other” party, they just left. Like me. The issue reveals itself in the Venn Diagram.

The majority of the disgruntled unaffiliated voters left either party for the same reasons realizing that it didn’t matter which party won, we end up in the same place. But disgruntled Dems and Reps kept speaking different languages and most wouldn’t talk to each other giving the false appearance that there was no opportunity there. The polls continue to assign “leanings” based on which party they fled. This created the opportunity for a candidate Trump. That’s why “both” parties hate him for the same reasons.

Trump did what no other Republican nor Democrat ever did: he actually visited the inner city neighborhoods bypassing the went the race mongering gatekeeper “Reverends” to speak directly to the people. He spoke about the issues that appealed to most people everywhere and still is. If only the Republican establishment didn’t still have so much appeal to so many Republicans (including so many here on these threads), November would be a slam dunk. “But,but, but he made so many mistakes with appointments”, “mean tweets” and you know the rest. We don’t deserve to win. The “stupid” in the Stupid Party” is deeply rooted.

CommoChief in reply to Pasadena Phil. | August 20, 2022 at 4:35 pm

The ‘stupid’ in the stupid is concentrated in the establishment / leadership of the party not the base or the foot soldiers or small to medium donors. The ‘stupid’ isn’t stupid, that’s a misnomer. It’s a deliberate policy of evasion and purposeful delay in implementing or watering down the solutions the base voters desire for the problems they view as critical. The establishment fears that solving problems would leave them unemployed or with less opportunities to continue their grift.

It’s always nice to have independent and crossover voters join those of us remaining r in the general election to defeat d/prog. If the establishment and leadership can avoid fumbling the ball then this fall presents a historic opportunity. Glad to have you and other independents as allies and partners in that cause this fall.

Just keep educating them on the tax and spend follies of all politicians. Let them see how their money is being stolen from them and once the light comes on it’ll be a whole new world.

The problem democrats have is the same one they’ve always had. They have to lie about their intentions to get elected. If they told the truth about what they want to do, nobody would vote for it.

The silent majority is still out there. We watch and we wait.

So, calling anyone who disagrees with you on any issue a racist is not a convincing argument?

Who knew?

When will the regime start labelling polls it doesn’t like as misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information?

When will Facebook and Twitter and their ilk start censoring them or ‘fact checking’ them?

BTW, if that time ever comes the leftwing propagandists who conduct polls for Foxnews have nothing to worry about.

When will all of those Republicans running this year just speak out! It’s like Tucker Carlson asked last night: “Why isn’t every single Republican running this year showing this video!”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hb_zzT96yIQ

As I say below, liberals are already running away. Let’s give them a place to run to. They are already brainwashed into hating Trump as are half of Republicans. Where do you think the REAL problem is? Let’s deserve to win. Right now, Republicans are blowing it because they just won’t use the advantages dropping out of the sky for them. The Republican plan is always to be one vote shy of winning. And even when they win, they then throw the game

I think it is just the beginning of figuring it out. For a while, liberals “felt” that following all of the shiny objects being offered was the way to go because it was so “obvious” and didn’t require deep thought. It was the past of least resistance. But following that path is bringing nothing but pain and suffering so they are now beginning to run away from liberalism. They aren’t running to anything yet.

That is a big reason why we need to be doing a lot of explaining. America is the greatest story of how freedom is gained and we need to be very explicit about how it is now being lost. It isn’t being taken away from us, we are voting it away.

And it is doesn’t help that McConnell’s GOP is instructing senators running for election to not discuss the issues and to not make promises. We need to tell that story and for once, like Trump, make promises that we plan to keep. But at least tell the story and please, they already know that the Democrats suck. Tell them the good story about why the alternative doesn’t. Tell the story!

And BTW, don’t you think Trump trolling the left right now is brilliant? Even with all of the “yeh but…” whiners infesting “our” side, Trump is getting the message out. Why is he the only one…. again?

henrybowman in reply to Pasadena Phil. | August 20, 2022 at 3:14 pm

Well, he’s not the ONLY one.
DeSantis is actually PUNISHING leftist pols flouting the law in his state.
      Trump never managed that.

DeSantis is doing his job as governor of Florida. It is not up to Trump to “manage” that. And right now, DeSantis needs to be part of the Trump effort, not positioning to run against him (all signs is that he is following that advice). Having both Trump and DeSantis as strong as possible nationally is unbeatable. Having them run against each other is political suicide. Trump can still win but it would sure take a lot of wind out of his sail. And it would end DeSantis’ hopes for POTUS.

I live in what use to be a very red town outside of Austin. Austin is so expensive and has grown ridiculously that the woke have moved out to the smaller towns unfortunately, making them busy, expensive and woke .
I see tons of Beto signs everywhere and not one Abbott. It’s a long time till November but the woke never rest and never stop invading.

    gmac124 in reply to gonzotx. | August 20, 2022 at 11:54 am

A lack of yard signs to me doesn’t mean a lot. When politics was cordial and people had respect for others property this may have meant something. Now who wants to deal with cleaning up the vandalism that will happen if you do display an Abbot yard sign? The left cannot win in the market place of ideas on an equal footing so they must minimize the other side to amplify their message.

Not everyone running is dumb:

Be passive like McConnell and his gangs are advising or endorse the MAGA agenda. It’s not complicated to arrive at the only winnable option on the table.
