Polio Virus Found In New York Wastewater

Polio Virus Found In New York Wastewater

Samples are genetically linked to the confirmed case identified in July.

While I was away in Central Europe, my colleague Mary Chastain reported that the New York State Department of Health and Rockland County Department of Health announced a positive case of polio in the county. This was the first recorded case of polio in this nation since 2013.

Now state health officials indicate that the case may be “the tip of the iceberg” of a much wider threat after tests on wastewater samples identified strains of the polio virus that caused the first recorded infection.

The urgent call came as officials said polio had been detected in wastewater samples taken in several locations and at different times in two counties north of New York City, potentially signaling community spread of the disease.

“Based on earlier polio outbreaks, New Yorkers should know that for every one case of paralytic polio observed, there may be hundreds of other people infected,” Dr. Mary T. Bassett, the state’s health commissioner, said in a statement.

“Coupled with the latest wastewater findings,” Dr. Bassett added, “the department is treating the single case of polio as just the tip of the iceberg of much greater potential spread.”

The samples have been genetically linked to the confirmed polio case. Health officials are encouraging vaccinations in light of the test results.

The new findings don’t imply that the identified case in Rockland County is the source of the transmission, according to the New York State Department of Health. An investigation into the origins of the case is continuing.

New York health officials urged those who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated against polio to get immunized immediately. Unvaccinated people who live, work, go to school in or visit Rockland County, Orange County or the greater New York metropolitan area are at the greatest risk of exposure.

Officials have said that people who are fully vaccinated are at very low risk of contracting the disease.

This would be a great time to assess vaccination records, even for adults.

Unvaccinated people who live, work or spend time in Rockland County, Orange County and the greater New York metropolitan area are at the greatest risk.

Most school-aged children have received the polio vaccine, which is a four-dose course, started between 6 weeks and 2 months of age and followed by one shot at 4 months, one at 6 to 12 months, and one between the ages of 4 and 6. According to the health department, about 60% of children in Rockland County have received three polio shots before their second birthday, as have about 59% in Orange County — both below the 79% statewide figure.

According to the CDC’s most recent childhood vaccination data, about 93% of 2-year-olds in the U.S. had received at least three doses of polio vaccine.

Meanwhile, adults who are not vaccinated would receive a three-dose immunization, and those who are vaccinated but at high risk can receive a lifetime booster shot, according to the health department.

The vaccine is 99% effective in children who receive the full four-dose regime, health officials said.

Though it has little impact on most people, it is important to note that polio infection can lead to serious health effects, such as paralysis, in some cases.

Around 72% of people infected with polio have no visible symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Another 25% may develop flulike symptoms such as sore throat, fatigue, fever, nausea, headache or stomach pain, which tend to resolve after a few days.

In rare cases, the virus can invade the nervous system and cause meningitis (swelling of the brain and spinal cord membranes), paresthesia (the feeling of pins and needles in the legs), or irreversible paralysis, usually on one side of the body.

“It’s a double-humped disease. It starts off with a minor illness, with coldlike symptoms, sore throat, things like that. Then the patient usually gets better for a day or so and the paralysis sets in,” said Walter Orenstein, associate director of the Emory Vaccine Center.

Let me give you the origins you bastards

It’s called 3 million illegal aliens

Unchecked bringing every freaking disease know to man kind

Hey Biden, snooty all you other so called leaders

A Pox on YOUR house

If one of my children caught polio from these aliens, God couldn’t hold my rate back!

When you import what amounts to a third world country since Brandon took office, how is this not exactly what you should expect? In my opinion, anyone who has avoided the traditional shots for kids because of fear of autism, should perhaps reconsider the situation, given what the Democrats have delivered.

Why would that post be muzzled? Not overtly violent. Illegal immigrants who don’t encounter CBP are not screened for any disease they may be carrying. Lots of those of the past several decades and even more in the Biden Admin with no commitment to border security.

Areas of the world that lead in polio cases: Pakistan, Afghanistan, Angola, Congo, Central African Republic, Ghana, Nigeria, Philippines, Ethiopia, Chad, Benin, Togo, Myanmar, Somalia…

Areas generally polio-free: North and South America, Europe.

Would be interesting to find where the NY strain came from, except of course that the authorities would never tell the truth about it.

Milhouse in reply to Gosport. | August 7, 2022 at 12:44 am

As was publicly announced when that one case was found, the strain that infected that person was vaccine derived. The patient was unvaccinated, and caught a virus that descends, somewhere up the line, from a mutation in an attenuated virus given in the vaccine. Had the patient himself been vaccinated this would not have been a problem, but he wasn’t.

In any case, this means the strain almost certainly came from somewhere with a high vaccination rate, using the oral (live) vaccine, which the USA stopped using in 2000. Europe seems like the most likely origin.

Gosport in reply to Milhouse. | August 7, 2022 at 6:12 am

55% of Rockland County’s foreign-born population is from Mexico/Latin America, both of which use oral vaccines for polio.

20% are from Europe, Canada and Oceania combined.

Milhouse in reply to Gosport. | August 7, 2022 at 10:23 am

It’s not Rockland’s foreign-born population that neglects or refuses to vaccinate their children. The virus may have originally come from an immigrant who was vaccinated with live virus in their country of origin, but it spread among unvaccinated natives.

Gosport in reply to Gosport. | August 7, 2022 at 5:14 pm

My post was about the source of the strain in question.

I pointed out that the facts indicate quite a high probability that it came from Mexico or Latin America.

The vaccination status of Rockland County is an unrelated straw man.

Milhouse in reply to gonzotx. | August 7, 2022 at 12:51 am

No, you idiot. There is no indication, and no reason at all to suppose, that it came from Central America, let alone from anyone who crossed the border illegally. This has nothing to do with your pet cause. It has nothing to do with politics. And it’s not an excuse to let loose your bigotry.

The one known case is an American citizen, born and raised in Rockland County, and not vaccinated. There are a number of communities in Rockland that for various reasons have a significantly lower vaccination rate than most places, and he comes from one of those. And now he’s paying the price. There’s really no good reason for any parent not to have their children vaccinated against polio. This is not the Wuhan shot. Don’t give your kids that! But the normal shots are important.

So dumb, isn’t it, letting millions of unvetted aliens into the country?

More likely, it’s smart, if you’re a leftist wanting the nation to die.

It’s the latter. We’re at war.

Get ready for the “health emergency” du jour. When you’ve got a hammer, everything looks like a nail, and the powers that ought not be now know they can wield this hammer whenever they want as long as they can get enough people to freak out.

The Covid “Vaccine” destroys all immunity.
Both natural, and all previous Vaccines.
To include Polio and Smallpox.
So, all those immunities are dead and gone.
Plus, anything else you have been Vaccinated for.

Dathurtz in reply to Stuytown. | August 6, 2022 at 7:13 am

There is a decent argument to be made that it does reduce your immune system’s ability to fight the newer strains of covid.

I can’t supply the evidence it makes you less able to fight other diseases.

nordic prince in reply to Dathurtz. | August 6, 2022 at 10:54 am

The increase in incidents of rapid onset, aggressive cancers that has arisen with the rollout of the clot shot does indeed seem to suggest precisely that.

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to nordic prince. | August 6, 2022 at 1:18 pm

I’m wondering about this Merkel Cell stuff I have been dealing with, but question the screaming done by – for example – the comment makers at places like GWP or CFP, with their talk of microchips in every dose, blah blah.

My main gripes with the (alleged) vaccine are: they don’t work, and that otherwise sensible people will now refuse vaccines that ARE safe and effective.

Slightly on topic: all of this ADD and autism being blamed on childhood vaccines didn’t happen in my generation, I wonder if it is giving multiple-disease vaccines is causing this? Ours were all separate, or at most combing diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus in one. I am led to understand there are some being administered that have far more all combined.

nordic prince in reply to nordic prince. | August 6, 2022 at 3:02 pm

Grizz, it is hypothesized that multidose vaxxes could be a factor in vaxx injuries. It was simply assumed (i.e. never proven) that multidose vaxxes would have the same safety profile as their individual component shots.

“Assuming” something to be true is NOT how science is done, but it IS how pharmaceutical companies save time & money… by rushing products through the approval process (and the veil on that farce has been pulled back for all the world to see) and doing a lot of hand-waving.

Milhouse in reply to nordic prince. | August 7, 2022 at 12:57 am

Grizz, whatever has caused the increase in autism diagnoses, one thing is absolutely certain: vaccines had nothing to do with it. This has been studied to death, and if there were anything there it would have been found.

I think the main cause is genetic. People with the genes for autism are now more likely to meet and marry, and have children that carry them from both sides.

That was the reason that settled it for me. I opted to trust my natural immunity which, considering I’ve never been sick with the flu, was my best option. I have probably been infected by the WuFlu by now but I’ve had no symptoms. So I am assuming my natural immunity is stronger than ever.

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to Pasadena Phil. | August 6, 2022 at 1:21 pm

Lucky man! I have had relatively few cases of the flu, and the one that whacked me hard was the Hong Kong flu of 1968-69. Dear me. but I was sick. Otherwise, except for my latest bouts with all this cancer nonsense, and cyto, I have been among the healthier people my docs have seen.

That’s why you’re still around. I known a few people who beat worse than what you have (if I understand what you have). One is now in his eighties and still kicking ass. He has a very rate form of cancer in his jaw and throat. Had to have half of his jawbone replaced by part of a bone in his leg. He looks awful for months but now he looks as good as ever.

    https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/govt-database-reveals-10000-increase-in-cancer-reports-due-to-covid-vaccines/

Milhouse in reply to snowshooze. | August 7, 2022 at 12:53 am

The patient who is paralyzed was not vaccinated against polio. And I have good reason to doubt he ever got the Wuhan shot either. So his immune system is just fine, it was just never primed against polio as it should have been when he was small.

Aren’t we all vaccinated? Polio was a major, major problem when I was growing up but we all got vaccinated. I took the oral vaccine. As far as I know, that is the only polio vaccine I ever got. That was in the 1960s. Am I now considered unvaccinated?

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to Pasadena Phil. | August 6, 2022 at 6:54 am

I got the Salk vaccine in the 1850s and later the Sabin. I need to ask about boosters.

CommoChief in reply to Pasadena Phil. | August 6, 2022 at 10:42 am

I believe I read that the polio vax was removed from the mandatory list in 1979. Still recommended. DoD still requires it so military service past ‘shots in both arms day’ at basic training equals vaccination for those who didn’t previously have it….and probably for everyone in line because that’s just easier.

Old Soldier in reply to CommoChief. | August 6, 2022 at 2:09 pm

Mother Army made sure all of our vaccinations were up to date, including smallpox. I pointed to the scar on my arm and said; “Hey, I got that one as an infant.” It did not matter, I got it again. The upside is it left a tiny scab at the vaccination site, proving what I got in 1963 was still effective. The younger set, who never had that vaccine, developed gross-looking pustules with a big dot in the center that looked like an iris.

gonzotx in reply to E Howard Hunt. | August 6, 2022 at 9:53 am

Abbott is a RINO. He’s busing like a couple of thousand, they have to “volunteer “ to get on the bus

Abbott amd sadly Patton don’t consider this an”invasion”, because they aren’t wearing uniforms.

    I kid you not!

Kari Lake will declare an invasion because what it is., she’s running on it, thusly they will cheat harder so she can’t win.

Don’t be fooled by Abbott. He’s pretty worthless, better than Beto but not by much.
    He’s no DeSantis

CommoChief in reply to gonzotx. | August 6, 2022 at 10:53 am

IMO, Abbott is playing the long game because he’s in a weak position. He’s incrementally raising the pressure and exercising options instead of simply declaring an Art IV ‘invasion’. It isn’t as if the Biden Admin would respond positively and supply funding to use the NG or put the 1st Armored Div along the Rio Grande.

Again, my opinion is he is building the case for his eventual claim by doing everything he can short of that action so that when a !ore receptive Admin occupies the WH the legal challenges can be more easily rebuffed.

I would point out that the most pro Border Security President in decades declined to put sufficient troops along the border to preclude illegals from crossing. That’s not a knock on DJT but a recognition of how the urge to ‘do something’ must be tempered with the wisdom to ensure your efforts are successful by laying the ground work required in advance.

gonzotx in reply to CommoChief. | August 6, 2022 at 2:07 pm

        3 MILLION illegals
        3 MILLION plus

Abbott needs to shut it down. Biden can throw a fit bit he’s not going to send soldiers down to confront Texas protecting its citizens
        It’s past time

        There is no long game

Trump didn’t need to put soldiers down on the border, he got Mexico to enforce laws and keep the illegals there

And he got most of the wall built.

CommoChief in reply to gonzotx. | August 6, 2022 at 5:07 pm

How exactly, call up the NG and post them along the border? All Biden has to do is Federalize them and order a stand down.
The resources simply don’t exist for an individual State to shutdown the border.

Actual numbers from CPB arrests show that the border was not ‘shut down’ during the DJT Admin. In fact the apprehension numbers of illegals grew every year despite DJT best efforts. Until Rona.

          2017 -415K, 2018 – 521K, 2019 – 977K

Until 2020 and Rona and use of title 42 and similar policies executed by Mexico along their southern border the numbers got worse. In fact the only reason the 2020 numbers weren’t worse than 2019 was the huge downward drop from March thru June.

CPB keeps these stats. The CIS, center for immigration studies a center right pro border security and pro interior enforcement group, keeps close tabs on and reviews the stats. IOW I have confidence in them.

If you can explain what specific actions Abbott should take to shut down the border I am happy to listen and discuss their feasibility and work for a solution.

        txvet2 in reply to CommoChief. | August 6, 2022 at 6:39 pm

Abbott has already stationed around 1000 DPS/Texas Rangers/TXNG along the border, with orders to return the illegals to the border. The problem is, they just move to a CBP checkpoint, where they’re processed, issued ID, and either released or transported to San Antonio where they’re flown to cities around the country. Abbott has nothing to do about it once CBP has processed them, except what he is doing – busing the ones who volunteer elsewhere.

BTW, there is/has been a major conference on the subject this weekend here in Texas, some of which was carried on C-Span and FBN.

          txvet2 in reply to txvet2. | August 6, 2022 at 7:38 pm

Oh yeah. Trump is/was speaking now. Forgot to mention that it’s CPAC.

          CommoChief in reply to txvet2. | August 7, 2022 at 7:58 am

          TXVET2,

Agreed. Abbott is doing about all he can realistically do given the constraints and limitations he’s operating under. He has taken a number of steps that incrementally raise the stakes.

Could he be criticized for not doing so sooner? Sure. Are those who criticize him willing to either:
          A. Pay the tax bill needed to pay the NG to full mobilization?
          B. Accept the call if used his power to call forth the unorganized militia; all Citizens Age 17-45?
          C. Ignore or refuse the actions of the Feds in response to include an exchange of fire with Federal troops/agencies all the way through a revolution?

It’s easy to criticize and demand he ‘do something’. Those who are the loudest voices usually don’t have a concrete plan of what to do nor have they thought through the likely repercussions. All hat, no cattle for most.

Will our “medical experts” convince our weak politicians to proclaim an emergency and wear masks, get an untested vaccine, social distance, etc. I mean we are all “in this together”, right?

You forgot mandatory two hours a day in the iron lung as a preventative measure. Watch out if Nancy’s husband buys share in Iron lung manufacturers

New York must be bad if the Polio virus is sneeking out in the wastewater.

Imagine if they did testing at the border

I’ll bet the polio virus doesn’t care if you are rich or poor or Republican or Democrat

The Covid Vaccine wipes out you natural immunity.
It also wipes out the immunity lent by all the other Vaccines.

This is the reason for the sudden recurrence of these old illnesses.
The Covid Vaccine has given them a whole new foot-hold.

Monkeypox is a direct beneficiary as we know that the Smallpox Vaccine is effective against it, however those vaccinated for Smallpox are getting it.

This can be directly attributed to the Covid Vaccine.

Milhouse in reply to snowshooze. | August 7, 2022 at 1:06 am

That is BS. The polio patient got it because he was never vaccinated against it. And where did you get the idea that the people with monkeypox were ever vaccinated against smallpox? They stopped giving that a long time ago, when the disease was wiped out. These people are probably younger than that.

Worth a review. 1916 New York City polio epidemic

Regarding immigrants, illegal or not, countries have historically conducted at least cursory medical examinations on them and quarantined those afflicted with communicable diseases until they were no longer contagious. Such procedures are well accepted internationally and date back at least to A.D. 549 when Byzantine emperor Justinian enacted a law barring people from plague-infested regions.

Now of course the left has declared it ‘racist’ to take such precautions with our illegal immigrants.
