NY Times: Be Afraid Of ‘Far-Right Latinas’ Like Republican Mayra Flores

“what is most striking is that Ms. Flores won by shunning moderates, embracing the far right and wearing her support for Donald J. Trump on her sleeve”

The New York Times has finally taken a moment to recognize the stunning victory of Texas Republican Mayra Flores.

Naturally, they had to do it in their own special way.

They couldn’t just celebrate her win because, despite the fact that she’s a Hispanic woman, to the NY Times, she is a Republican first and foremost.

That means she has to be presented in a certain light.

Jennifer Medina writes in the NY Times:

The Rise of the Far-Right Latina

For years, Texas Republicans tried to win the Hispanic vote using a Bush-era brand of compassionate conservatism. The idea was that a moderate’s touch and a softer rhetoric on immigration were key to making inroads with Hispanic voters, particularly in Democratic strongholds along the southern border.

Such was the Texas of old. The Trump age has given rise to a new brand of Texas Republicans, one of whom is already walking the halls of Congress: the far-right Latina.

Representative Mayra Flores became the first Republican to represent the Rio Grande Valley in more than a century after she won a special election last month and flipped the congressional seat from blue to red. She also became the first Latina Republican ever sent by Texas to Congress. Her abbreviated term lasts only through the end of the year, and she is seen as a long shot to win re-election to a full one.

But what is most striking is that Ms. Flores won by shunning moderates, embracing the far right and wearing her support for Donald J. Trump on her sleeve — more Marjorie Taylor Greene than Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Her campaign slogan — “God, family, country” — was meant to appeal to what she calls the “traditional values” of her majority-Hispanic district in the border city of Brownsville. She called for President Biden’s impeachment. She tweeted QAnon hashtags. And she called the Democratic Party the “greatest threat America faces.”

The term “far-right” was used twice in the first four paragraphs. Here’s a question:

And an observation:

Flores has responded to the Times piece. FOX News reports:

Mayra Flores fires back after New York Times calls her ‘far-right Latina’: Paper knows ‘nothing about me’

Rep. Mayra Flores, R-Texas, hit back at a New York Times article referring to her as a “far-right Latina,” saying the newspaper “knows nothing about me or our culture.”

“I am proud of my culture and my beautiful family,” Flores told Fox News Digital in a text.

“I was born in Burgos, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and raised with strong Conservative values to always put God and Family first. I have received only hate from the liberal media and constantly [been] told by the left to back to Mexico. They don’t support us immigrants, they only use us for political power and don’t care about our well-being. I am here now and I won’t allow them to continue taking advantage of my people. The NYT knows nothing about me or our culture. Somos gente de Dios, Familia y Travajo [We are people of God, Family and Work], Si Señor!” she wrote.

The New York Times probably feels threatened by people like Mayra Flores and frankly, they should.

They created all of these carefully labeled race, ethnic and gender boxes to neatly sort us out in a way they could more easily control us. Now everyone is crawling out of their boxes. Globalism under one central government is going to be so much harder to manage than they expected. Now go to your corner and start making piles of water.

Good morning, sir. I believe the Hispanic transition is a real one, but my mental jury is still out on blacks. I will be happily surprised if they are coming around, but remains skeptical.

As for Jews outside the Orthodox community, I have virtually no hope.

In my experience, the problem with black communities is that too many of their churches (AMR e.g.) are racist. Their political leadership is still controlled by the 1960s activists who have sold out on everything except the “white people suck” issue. But there are lots of blacks running for office challenging them but they get labeled “black face of white supremacy” by the mostly white elitists behind BLM etal.

It’s happening but only more slowly. More than anyone, blacks should be fighting CRT in schools. Thomas Sowell is leading that charge and he has a lot of growing support all around.

The Democrats have a problem with the African American community because they have had such an overwhelming level of voter support stranglehold on their support (85-95%), that even a modest loss of 5-10% would cripple the party on a national level. The level is so high and has been so secure, that it has impeded African American progress because they are taken for granted.

I’m sure the story of Brigham Young decreeing upon arriving to Utah that 50 percent of Mormons would be Democrats and 50% Republicans so that neither party takes their needs for granted is apocryphal, but there is much truth to the concept.,

JackinSilverSpring in reply to The Gentle Grizzly. | July 7, 2022 at 8:35 am

Jews outside the Orthodox community are for the most part Jews by an accident of birth. In the not too distant future they will simply disappear.

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to JackinSilverSpring. | July 7, 2022 at 10:12 am

I was born into the Reform sect. You know: Democrats with holidays and really bad Yiddish. Among the very few acquaintances I have left from my younger days, virtually none had children. So, yes: they may disappear.

“Mischling” here. Raised mostly as a liberal Protestant, though.

Where I teach, I have had some students of Hispanic and recent African origins quietly approach me and mention that they heard that Trump really wasn’t such a bad man, and certain other things. When one of my progressive colleagues offered an “inspiring” quote from Abp. Romero over the PA one morning, my class full of young Salvadoreans all but erupted in a riot. The Spanish being shouted was too rapid for me to follow, and I never figured if it was because these kids’ families were on the wrong side of the political fence or because they were Pentecostals, Baptists, and Adventists objecting to a RC being quoted!

In the Washington suburbs, a lot of Christian Far Eastern origin people also seem to lean GOP.

Why assume that we’ll disappear now? People have been trying to make that happen for going on 5800 years without much success. Maybe you’re right, but color me doubtful.

23andme teaches us that there are purebloods–or at least mostly so–around, even if we don’t practice much. I agree with the above sentiment that we’re (first) a nation with (second) a religion. Which individuals practice or don’t.

sestamibi in reply to JackinSilverSpring. | July 7, 2022 at 11:53 am

Yes, that is unfortunately true. As a fellow Tribesman I can attest to that. The decades of embrace of all the latest fashions in feminism, gay rights, and earthery have taken their toll.

As I’ve often said, if Hitler were non-white, American Jews would be fighting for first place in line for the camps.

The good news is that the Orthodox numbers, while still small, are growing. Several years ago we were driving back to NJ from upstate NY through the Catskills. On Route 55 one morning we found hundreds of them walking to shabbat services with their legions of children in tow.

They really aren’t Jews. Their religion is progressive fascism.

Milhouse in reply to ConradCA. | July 7, 2022 at 10:07 pm

They really aren’t Jews. Their religion is progressive fascism.

Their religion is irrelevant to whether they’re really Jews. Jewish status does not depend on what one believes. Jews are not a religion, we are a nation that has a religion, one that most Jews unfortunately don’t believe in. They’re still Jews for all that.

However it’s probably true that the majority of those identifying as “Reform Jews”, including the majority of those identifying as “Reform rabbis”, are not actually Jews at all. Between fake conversions and counting patrilineal descent, by now the actual Jews in that movement are probably a minority.

If they lose their dominion over blacks, then it’s pretty much all over.

artichoke in reply to geronl. | July 7, 2022 at 3:06 pm

They won’t. The blacks are a loyal constituency, although there are exceptions.

Most black people probably see benefits in the agenda the Dems promote. It’s not that they don’t think for themselves, it’s that they are pragmatic and put their own interests first. And they’ll surely resent the black person who announces “I will compete on my own and serve as an example to those that would force you to compete on your own, too.”

I understand the logic. It should not be enabled to continue because it’s unfair to everyone else, but it’s pragmatic for many black people to support it.

Blacks should be screaming the loudest about millions of unlawfully imported hispanics stealing their jobs and crashing their wages, yet they do not.

I don’t know how closely this pertains to the article. But since you said it I’s like to add my $0.02 (US) to the conversation.

An article I read in the Jewish Observer when I was a teenager gave a brief history of the Reform movement in 19th century Hungary. It seems they assimilated themselves out of existence with 4 generations. Also, this URL, https://aish.com/48910307/, references an old-ish article in Aish.com entitled “Will Your Grandchildren Be Jewish”. For the non-Orthodox, the chart paints a bleak picture.

The problem is that until they finally do the same in USA as they did in Hungary, they can commit a LOT of damage to this country with their leftist theology (idolatry?).

WaPo, Pravda Times, the Atlantic, et al., will never refer to the Dumb-o-crats’ most manifestly vile, fanatical and extreme demagogue-zealots (e.g., Occasional-Cortex; Ilhan Omar; Rashida Tlaib; Comrade Sanders, etc.) as “far-left,” even though that characterization is fair and accurate. Only GOP politicians are to be slandered with the derogatory and inaccurate “far-right” slander.

A Punk Named Yunk in reply to guyjones. | July 8, 2022 at 2:59 pm

      > Occasional-Cortex
That’s a GREAT manipulation of her name. (Though I fear she is NOT stupid.) Now can’t anyone come up with a name-related mockery of Tlaib, Omar, & Sanders? (Me? Sorry, not clever enough. 🙁 )

But fear not “wise Latinas.” Also, why is the Times using gendered language?

Morning Sunshine in reply to Stuytown. | July 7, 2022 at 9:08 am

Likewise with this comment, “Her abbreviated term lasts only through the end of the year, and she is seen as a long shot to win re-election to a full one.”

Being an incumbent negates that “long shot” dig at her. Had hers been an appointment by the governor, maybe the comment. But here she just won an election.

As our sage comrades at the Pravda Times advise, we simply cannot have these troublesome “white Hispanics” running around and espousing conservative, pro-Second Amendment, pro-border security, pro-family views. What gives these people the right to believe that they can express opinions and views that are contrary to those held by paternalistic, coastal Dumb-o-crat elites? Don’t these Hispanics know that they must evince total fealty towards the Dumb-o-crats and their orthodoxies?

These heretics must be dealt with, swiftly and severely.

Steven Brizel | July 7, 2022 at 8:26 am

guyjones in reply to Steven Brizel. | July 7, 2022 at 8:37 am

Except for Muslims; the supremacist and totalitarian ideology of “Submission” representing the only religious/political ideology that has approval from the Dumb-o-crat Party. Submission representing a natural ideological bedfellow with Marxism/Leninism.

Also, note how the Times uses the moniker “Far-Right” as an epithet and a derogatory characterization, true to form for Dumb-o-crat media propagandists. The implication is that any American citizen who holds mainstream and uncontroversial conservative views, is an alleged extremist.

Naturally, these idiots will never refer to Dumb-o-crats as “Far-Left,” even though the Dumb-o-crat base and its platform are manifestly more politically fanatical and extreme than mainstream conservatism.

CommoChief in reply to guyjones. | July 7, 2022 at 9:29 am

    Exactly.

When asked they adamantly refuse to acknowledge that a far left even exists. Usually the conversation begins with some random r being (mis)labeled as far right. When pressed for an example of far left they refuse. When it’s pointed out that a leftist who holds the polar opposite views as the (mis)labeled r would be far left on the scale they created they stutter, shriek and run away.

The folks doing the labeling have zero understanding of how deep their bias runs because they occupy a closed loop. That’s why they were so genuinely stunned on election night in 2016. No one they know or communicate with has a contrary world view because they use ostracism and shame to drive out dissenting views.

A Punk Named Yunk in reply to guyjones. | July 8, 2022 at 3:06 pm

    > note how the Times uses the moniker “Far-Right” as an epithet
This reminds me of the origin of the term “Orthodox” referring to Jews who stuck to their original faith and resisted the Reform movement in 19th century Germany. The term was meant to be a contemptuous epithet.

The term was proudly embraced by the intended victims.

stevewhitemd | July 7, 2022 at 10:03 am

Congresswoman Flores: “They don’t support us immigrants, they only use us for political power and don’t care about our well-being.”

That right there is why the NYT will go to almost any length to cancel the good Congresswoman. The NYT is behaving like a vampire exposed to silver.

Vampires are destroyed by a stake through the heart, sunlight or being totally consumed by fire. In addition they can’t cross running water nor enter a dwelling without permission. Silver is proof against werewolves. Zombies are destroyed by trauma to their brain.

The great thing about LI to me is that folks from across the internet of different professions, expertise, experiences and background come together to discuss issues. There is a good deal of collective wisdom to be found here.

Like many ‘families’ we sometimes grate upon each other and become upset over minor differences. Some of the most heat generated revolves around the 1% difference of opinion when we overlook that we actually agree on the remaining 99%.

I thought it was getting a bit testy the last few days so I decided to attempt to inject some humor. Though the info on Vamps is canon. 😊

Milhouse in reply to CommoChief. | July 7, 2022 at 10:15 pm

That’s the thing, though. There are so many canons when it comes to vampires, and they’re all inconsistent with each other.

Milhouse in reply to CommoChief. | July 7, 2022 at 10:14 pm

It depends whose vampires. Each writer’s vampires are different; some are sensitive to silver and some aren’t. I don’t think silver was part of the historical legend in our universe, but in many fictional universes they are. For instance if I recall correctly, Charlaine Harris’s vampires are sensitive to silver, but Tanya Huff’s are not. And those are just two examples out of many dozens.

CommoChief in reply to Milhouse. | July 8, 2022 at 8:46 am

Perhaps, like the Vamp in Fright Night proclaimed ‘it doesn’t work unless one believes’. The ‘it’ being immaterial because belief in the power or utility of the ‘it’ is what lends the ‘it’ effectiveness?

A subtle reminder of the importance of belief and meaning in our actions v aimlessly going through the motions?

Milhouse in reply to CommoChief. | July 8, 2022 at 10:20 am

Old joke, I think from the Borscht Belt era: Person is walking through the forest at night, and is jumped by a vampire. Being well-prepared, she pulls out a large cross and holds it in front of her, to which the vampire says, “Doos vet dich goooornisht helfen” (that won’t help you at aaaaaall).

The remnants of my German picked up the meaning. As a gentile of Scots Irish decent it was a surprise to find out how similar/close Yiddish is to German and a lesser extent English. It really shouldn’t be but without any frame of reference or experience for a young provincial southern kid from a rural area it was.

We think the world is a huge place who’s differences define us then discover how much similarity and overlap in languages and customs exist when we venture out of the corner we were born in.

Kepha H in reply to Dejectedhead. | July 7, 2022 at 3:06 pm

As a polyglott I hate the Left’s language games. When I was a teen, my lady teacher taught us pronoun agreement: “If someone is in trouble, help him–not them. The pronoun must agree in number with the antecedent, and here, the he or him is gender ambiguous or neutral.” Instead of protesting that I was being gelded by grammar (I am male), I accepted kindly and encouraging authority, lived, and learned that the masculine gender does a similar double duty in many Indo-European and Semitic languages. I then spent a good part of my life using Sinitic and Kradai languages of the Far East, in which the third person pronoun is not gendered, but one can scarcely call the cultures that use them sexually egalitarian. Hence, I see the feminists and LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ’s pushing pronoun and other gender-bending changes in our languages and others to be very provincial, silly, ignorant, and barking up the wrong trees.

artichoke in reply to Kepha H. | July 7, 2022 at 3:11 pm

Yeah, I’m happy to give them their useless pronouns. It won’t come with any extra concessions to their wokeness, or make me apologetic about anything. And I won’t go out of my way to remember all that stuff I don’t remember for anyone else. But if they have a nametag or something with pronouns, I’ll use them if I think of it.

I may be a little extra gruff just to counter their expectation that I would be intimidated.

Kepha H in reply to artichoke. | July 7, 2022 at 5:00 pm

I’m not happy about the useless pronouns at all; especially given the power of these corrupters in educational circles (I am a teacher). Their “useless” pronouns are just a way to make our flexible, expressive language confused and inarticulate.

      Why the Left abuses language:

“It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words…Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.” –George Orwell, in “1984”

Just as well. Everything the NYT knows is wrong.

Are the Times still putting out a paper? Anyway It’s not relevant to my lifestyle.

It’s primary use is to line the bottoms of birdcages and for puppies to be paper trained on.

Actually everyone is wrong on this issue: Mary Flores is Mexican; the generic category of Hispanic/Latino is a fiction. They in fact don’t have a common race, ethnicity, nationality, history, culture or socio-economic group.

TheChemist in reply to RandomCrank. | July 17, 2022 at 4:54 am

The way to keep progressives scared is to find good (not perfect, Mother Theresa will never be on a ballot) candidates and support them with your time and treasure. Start supporting them this very day, November is coming.

In some areas the only choice in local and state elections may be between a more traditional JFK Democrat and an extreme Socialist-Marxist progressive, but also running as a Democrat, so don’t ignore primaries. The lesser of two evils philosophy is pragmatifc. We must keep the “Progressives” from getting any more hands on the levers of power.
