New York University’s LGBTQ+ Center Floats “Latine” as Alternative to “Latinx”

“a gender-neutral or non-binary alternative”

Why are progressives so determined not to use the terms Latino and Latina? Because they are gendered words.

Campus Reform reports:

‘Latine’ is the new ‘gender-neutral’ term out to replace ‘Latinx’

New York University’s LGBTQ+ Center announced via Instagram that the university would be holding a slew of “Cultural and Identity-Based Graduation Celebrations” to “acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of graduating students of color and LGBTQ+ students.”

Among the celebrations listed was an event titled “Latine Grad.”

“Latine” is a gender-neutral or non-binary alternative to “Latino,” similar to “Latinx.”

Some have criticized Latinx for not conforming to the linguistic rules of Spanish. Students at Emory University and Swarthmore College, among others, have criticized the term along these lines.

Writing for Swathmore’s The Phoenix, Gilbert Guerra and Gilbert Orbea call usage of the term “a blatant form of linguistic imperialism,” arguing that activists are engaging in the “forcing of U.S. ideals upon a language in a way that does not grammatically or orally correspond with it.”

Students and administrators at some universities have begun using “Latine” in an attempt to achieve inclusivity while conforming to the linguistic rules of Spanish.

El Centro, a center for Latino students at Colorado State University, recommends using both Latine and Latinx.

Latine is too close to latrine for comfort.

    So la-tinks wasn’t good enough?

Maybe white lefty, gender fluid Karens ought to stop telling people what they should be called.

I read it as latrine at first! I thought the idiots on the Left wanted to change bathroom to latrine. The Left is constantly tweaking our language to suit their agenda!

“Latine” sounds like a good name for a New Orleans palm reader and “spiritual advisor.”

I don’t think this will fix the feature (not a bug) of a gendered language that progressives want to erase.

Of course, the word “Latin,” which Americans used for centuries to describe people like Desi Arnaz, Tito Puente, and Anastazio Somoza, is not even in consideration.

Because it’s racist, or hurtful, or whatever.
Like colored people. While people of color is perfectly groovy.

Do they ever stop?
It’s all ridiculous.

And this is still going to go over in the Hispanic community like a fart in church.

Romance languages are gendered languages and always have been. Very few gender-neutral words, with the exceptions of ones that have been adopted very recently exist in Spanish, French, Portuguese, etc. Calling someone Latinx (first, we don’t even know how to pronounce that absurdity) makes it sound like your calling us by a brand of dish soap. Using “Latine” is equally atrocious because it sounds to close to calling us “Saltine”. We’re not salted crackers to be served with soup or cheese.

The problem is not the language so much as the (mostly) American view that they are so elite, so fabulous, so unassailable that they can literally colonize an entire language, and with it all its myriad cultures, into the white leftist elitist fantasy in which everyone wants to be just as hate-filled and soul-destroyed as they are . . . while supporting their great privilege to the detriment of their own families. Never ever let them colonize your language, take it over, make it nothing. This issue incenses me like few others because it’s so disgusting and abhorrent and insulting and demeaning.
