Progressive View That “Kids Belong To Whole Communities” Not Parents Isn’t New, That Viral Video Is From 2013

We covered Melissa Harris-Perry’s video back in 2013, but it has resurfaced and is sweeping social media

Before MSNBC became a hate-filled cesspool, it was just a nutty one. And many moons ago, Melissa Harris-Perry floated the idea that parental rights are non-existent, that kids “belong to whole communities” in a “Lean Forward” statement. I have no idea if “Lean Forward is still a thing, because we don’t do cable news in this house.

A video of her insane discussion has recently gone viral. Again.

We did, of course, cover this lunacy back in 2013.

But you can watch the full video here. It’s still crazy.

It went viral then because it was insane and hopefully it’s still insane today. However, since the left has gone insane, you never know what they consider normal these days.

It’s also a major tenet of the communist manifesto. So it this concept has a long life.

Goes back further than that – try Plato’s Republic.

      Milhouse in reply to nordic_prince. | January 21, 2022 at 1:00 am

I was just about to say that!

      Milhouse in reply to nordic_prince. | January 21, 2022 at 1:12 am

By the way, Jo Walton has a trilogy of novels based on the premise that Apollo and Athene try to implement Plato’s republic as an experiment, to see what happens. Naturally it all goes in directions neither of them anticipated.

The second book in the series is remarkable for something else. Walton pulls off a literal Deus ex Machina, but it actually works! Of course it took her a lot of set-up to make it work, and to avoid the pitfalls that are the reason writers are taught never to do that. As they say, to break a rule successfully you must first know it through and through

      Arminius in reply to nordic_prince. | January 21, 2022 at 7:33 am

There is evidence that Plato’s Republic was meant as satire. It was never implemented though, and there’s no evidence Plato was ever serious about implementing it.

Naturally the left would see it as a roadmap. Sane people read Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm as warnings, which is as he intended. Marxists and their useful idiots read Orwell and say to themselves, “Great idea! Let’s do things that way.”

Madisonian is correct; it is a major tenet in Marx & Engells Communist Manifesto. Which is why “trained Marxists” Patrice Cullours & her cofounder of #BLM made it a major tenet of their program as stated in their original mission statement.

      https://twitchy.com/brettt-3136/2020/12/15/teachers-union-adopts-black-lives-matter-at-school-resolution-calling-for-disrupting-the-nuclear-family/

“Teachers’ union adopts ‘Black Lives Matter at School’ resolution calling for ‘disrupting the … nuclear family

“As Twitchy mentioned Monday, writer Noah Berlatsky proclaimed that parents are an oppressive class like rich people or white people, and further cited Marx and Engels and their distrust of the nuclear family…

The resolution includes the 13 guiding principles of the Black Lives Matter movement, including Black Villages:

‘We are committed to disrupting the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, and especially “our” children to the degree that mothers, parents and children are comfortable.'”

As writer Westley Yang of The Tablet goes on to say, “Stating that collective care should happen “to the extent that mothers, parents and children are comfortable” is a curious touch.” Of course it is; Directly contradicts everything that went before it. How comfortable can mothers and parents be when the goal is to “disrupt” your family and have the “collective” take over the care of your children?

Like today’s Democrats, or for that matter the Muslim Brotherhood, they can’t implement their programs to destroy Western Civilization if they tell you in advance what their plans are for you.

I’m sure the Russians weren’t told what that jargon meant when they were conned into supporting the 1917 Bolshevik revolution. What it meant was the “comfort” of mothers and parents meant nothing when it conflicted with the demands of the collective. Children belonged to the state in the USSR, not parents. The state only allowed parents to raise their children for the convenience of the state. Disrupting the nuclear family meant breaking it up, essentially. When fathers, who were the workers (by law; “malingerers” got banished to Siberia) qualified for a vacation they went on vacation with the other men who they worked with at the factory of whatever. Mothers would go on vacation with the ladies who belonged to the neighborhood associations that everyone was required to join. And children went on vacation with their classmates.

Is it any wonder the state workers who run and teach in the public schools think it’s the parents who are the domestic terrorists when they try to assert parental rights? Those terrorists need to learn they have no parental rights. As far as the state workers who run and teach in the schools are concerned those children already belong to the collective.

Arminius, Thank you for what I believe to be your correct take on Plato’s “Republic”!

Plato’s stated goal was to define “the just”. The dystopian result may be his way of saying that “the just” must not be our highest goal.

This is relevant to the left’s obsession with justice. “The just” without “the good” is a horror, as demonstrated several times in the previous century.

These are old lessons which, unfortunately, have to be relearned by every generation.

Yep… to them it still takes a village.

“It takes a village….”

Antifundamentalist | January 20, 2022 at 7:36 pm

Subjects, not Citizens. Property of the State. that is where we are heading.

The reason for this is to cover up that fact that black communities today are dysfunctional and children are raised by everybody but the parents. To admit that it is normal for children to be raised in a home with a mother and father is a rebuke to them and therefore they must attack what has been the natural and normal way societies and home life have functioned for the last 10,000 years.

CommoChief in reply to Peabody. | January 20, 2022 at 9:19 pm

The dysfunction is not limited to any particular community. The damning stats revealed in the Moynihan report of 1965 re the black community which caused such concern have been exceeded in the white community. It’s a phenomenon of willing abandonment of our social and legal elevation and preservation of the nuclear family.

In particular we have somehow decided that Fathers are unimportant to the well-being and development of children or stability in the home. This is true from pop culture to our divorce laws and family court system to the misguided philosophy of the great society. Fathers were viewed solely as cash contributors and easily replaced by Uncle Sugar or support payments. History has shown that to be a false notion.

      JohnSmith100 in reply to CommoChief. | January 21, 2022 at 1:28 am

Per capita rate is the best way to judge this, and black per capita rate is hands down the worst. People need to face up to this in order to fix it.

        CommoChief in reply to JohnSmith100. | January 21, 2022 at 11:15 am

The rates of fatherlessness is certainly higher, much higher, in the black community than than the white community. We can’t address rates or degree of occurrence in isolation. Even if we could why would we limit that to the black community?

We can absolutely address the foolish federal welfare policies which provide perverse incentives that impede family formation and curtail the use of no fault divorce proceedings. With no financial incentive to become pregnant young women will likely respond by not becoming pregnant. If they do become pregnant they will seek to marry the father in order to provide for their child. Without the ease of no fault divorce the marriage would remain intact which has societal benefits of it’s own; better child rearing, child care, stability, joint income, partners providing care giving support in later years.

gibbie in reply to CommoChief. | January 21, 2022 at 5:46 pm

Adults pursuing their own desires at the expense of children.

    JohnSmith100 in reply to Peabody. | January 21, 2022 at 1:21 am

We can all see the disaster of how children are raised in inner cities, where children are sort of tolerated, but where no one really cares to raise children in the traditional sense. Children need about 20 years of day in and out, hands on guidance.

Milwaukee in reply to Peabody. | January 22, 2022 at 12:43 am

When the Bolsheviks… Marxist…took control of Russia they introduced no-fault easy access divorce and anytime abortion. They worked hard at destroying the family.

Obama had a huge percentage of the Black vote. The next large block for him was single moms and single women. Women without men are more likely to be leftist than women with husbands and children.

This ^^

And every black man or woman that I work with has this stability in their family, and no issues. Oh, and they can get IDs to vote with.

The Democrats/Marxists are the ones causing this lunacy. They are the “root cause” of everything wrong in our country.

They must be shut down.

“And every black man or woman that I work with has this stability in their family, and no issues. Oh, and they can get IDs to vote with.”

    This. This is the crux.

Let me spell out the Left’s advice to blacks: Every attitude and behavior that can possibly assure a healthy and productive future is “white” and, therefore, off limits.
    — Scott Johnson, Powerline Blog, 21-11-26

    And this is eminently verifiable.

Yeah, but they don’t.

Our children and grandchildren were not brought into this world to put into educational indoctrination schools because they say so. Lean forward progressives are evil and should go away and die.

“We have to break through this idea that kids belong to their parents, or kids belong to their families”.

Somebody needs to send CPS to her door and see how quickly she revises that opinion. Take a video.

If my grandfather were alive today, he’d be advising us all, “Son, never stick your % in hyphenated.”

Fluffy Foo Foo | January 21, 2022 at 8:10 am

The video was shot in the French Quarter in New Orleans because this lady was a professor at Tulane. Tulane is chock full of woke academics a number of whom are ex-Democrat party or public officials.

2smartforlibs | January 21, 2022 at 8:52 am

You laughed when HillBully Clinton said it took a village idiot.

When we first started seeing “It Takes A Village” bumper stickers a few decades ago, I knew some evil shit was about to go down.

I was a teacher from 1979 to 2015. I’ve met plenty of barren teachers, all female, who say “I don’t have any children of my own. My students are my children.” Sort of like a reverse cuckoo…the cuckoo lays eggs in other birds nests and let those parents raise their offspring. These thieves steal the affection of young children and trusting parents. The teacher/student relationship is different from the pretending to be the mom and child relationship.

Parents…live your children and home school.

Harris-Perry has 2 daughters. Did she actually turn them over to the “community” to raise? Na, Harris Perry is a progressive and progressives usually do the opposite of what they tell others to do.

Steven Brizel | January 25, 2022 at 9:34 am

The Marxist antipathy to and hatred of the traditional family is why the left has always viewed government subsidized schools has factories for the severing of parental ties and traditional moral values.

Steven Brizel | January 25, 2022 at 9:37 am

Those of us who have traditional moral values view the family, community and education as partners in inculcating and transmitting such values, not eradicating them and have sent our children to yeshivos , parochial and private schools that uphold that mission.

Afterthought: women would be available for the whole community. Right? Equal equity.

If proposed when I was younger, I’ may have voted in favor.

Then, My young wife and two children would have voted me out of home and paycheck.

Plus, would Hillary have been my concubine?

Taken further, would Bill have had even wider, consensual access?
