Faculty and Students at St. Louis U. Petition to Keep Matt Walsh Off Campus

“We are not in support of ending civil discourse and the discussion of various points of view, rather we are in support of closing loopholes that create opportunities for hate speech.”

Matt Walsh is an unapologetically conservative writer for the Daily Wire who is supposed to speak at the school in December.

‘Keep Matt Walsh Off Our Campus’: Leftist Faculty and Students Urge Event Cancellation in Petition to SLU President

Campus leftists have taken aim at YAF’s upcoming Matt Walsh lecture, asking the administration to shut it down, according to a tip received through Young America’s Foundation’s Campus Bias Tipline.

Faculty and students at Saint Louis University’s School of Social Work penned an open letter and launched a change.org petition addressed to SLU President Fred Pestello along with other university leadership, urging them to cancel the upcoming Matt Walsh event on December 1. Among their reasoning, they cited “hate speech” and claimed that his words would instill fear in students.

“For women, racial minorities, and the LGBTQIA+ community, his words may instill further fear: fear of participating in the classroom with his supporters, fear of expressing identity at a school that supports these beliefs, and so much more,” the letter reads.

To support their opposition, they cited multiple Walsh tweets in which he reinforced his beliefs on feminism, transgenderism, and marriage, among other things. All of the views espoused by Walsh are mainstream in the Conservative Movement.

They further took issue with the school’s vetting procedure for speakers. “We would like to open a discussion about the university policy that allowed this lecture,” they wrote.

“We are not in support of ending civil discourse and the discussion of various points of view, rather we are in support of closing loopholes that create opportunities for hate speech.”

They closed by claiming that the request had nothing to do with politics, but instead a safety concern.

More than 1,200 leftists have signed the petition, leaving a trail of comments citing Walsh’s “hate speech” and lack of a uterus.

Comments

“Hate speech” doesn’t exist.
“Hate speech” is free speech.
“Freedom of speech” protects only offensive speech.
Unoffensive speech needs no protection.
“Hate speech” is the very “loophole”: the left is trying to create.
Do not let them.

Be very wary of someone making an argument that starts, “Not that I don’t believe in free speech, but….”

Assuming that Matt Walsh is advocating certain things off campus, how is it any more “dangerous” for him to say the same things on campus? Isn’t this just the Streisand effect? Is Matt Walsh’s audience getting any smaller as a result of these efforts to censor him? Perhaps this is just meaningless virtue signaling by those organizing and signing the petition. https://www.change.org/p/keep-matt-walsh-off-of-saint-louis-university-campus?recruiter=1236088363&recruited_by_id=7f1ad0c0-47d6-11ec-8586-952f401f5a34&utm_source=share_petition&utm_campaign=share_petition&utm_term=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink&utm_content=cl_sharecopy_31361380_en-US%3A3 Only, 1,573 signatures, so this is a tempest in a very small tea pot. In the immortal words of Matthew Brody, “Matt Walsh doesn’t have a uterus so he doesn’t have a right to have any opinion.”

“a trail of comments citing Walsh’s “hate speech” and lack of a uterus.”

I think that says all one needs to know to properly evaluate the attack on Walsh.

If you need a uterus to speak at St. Lou U, does that mean trans-genderd are not allowed as well?

“We are not in support of ending civil discourse and the discussion of various points of view, rather we are in support of closing loopholes that create opportunities for hate speech.” You know, when someone says something with which we disagree.

These profs should be terminated for being clearly morally and intellectually unqualified for their posts.
