Marymount University Students Protest New Housing Policy

Marymount University Students Protest New Housing Policy

“Last week, a group of 15 students demonstrated outside of the Catholic university”

The school is now requiring most students to live in campus housing for four years. I don’t blame the students for objecting, but the school is allowed to make its own rules.

ARL Now reports:

Students Protest New Marymount University Housing Policy

Some Marymount University students say they can’t afford a new housing policy that will require them to live on campus all four years.

Last week, a group of 15 students demonstrated outside of the Catholic university on N. Glebe Road in protest over a policy that will take effect next fall, requiring most students to live on campus during their entire stint at the school.

“Beginning in the Fall of 2022, all current and new undergraduate students who do not live with family members in the local [D.C] area will be required to live in University housing,” a university spokesperson told ARLnow.

A Change.org petition in response to the new policy calls for it to be rescinded, alleging that it’s a “blatant money-grab.” Plus, notes the petition, some off-campus leases have already been signed for next year, leaving students “to choose between breaking their lease or breaking university policy.”

The petition has more than 650 signatures.

The university tells ARLnow that this policy came from “input” they’ve received from students who say living on campus helps them have a “more engaged and fulfilling Marymount experience.” It also eliminates “problems with landlords and local housing laws, a growing trend that has been brought to our administration’s attention in recent years,” according to the spokesperson.

Comments

It isn’t only a blatant money grab, it’s a blatant covid vax mandate grab. It’s a lot harder to enforce such mandates on remote learning students who never come on campus.

Well then, if it “helps” some students, let’s make it MANDATORY on EVERYBODY!

Gee, why don’t the students who feel it gives them “a more engaged and fulfilling Marymount experience” just move into a campus dorm….and let others decide what is best for them? Nope! They have been trained for 13 years (in public and private schools) that there can be no different opinions and if anyone dare have one, it’s time to rat them out to the Stasi, by golly.

Many schools have requirements that students live on-campus for part or all of their undergraduate schooling. If you don’t like that, you just go to a school that doesn’t require it. In many schools in large cities (and all of CA), the only way students can afford housing is to live on campus.

Yes, the school is probably doing this because they are short of money, and the dorms aren’t full. But if they’re charging a reasonable amount for room and board, it’s not an unusual policy.
