Investigation: Medical Education And Research Crumbling Under Racial Identity Politics

Investigation: Medical Education And Research Crumbling Under Racial Identity Politics

Real Clear Investigations: “The national racial reckoning over reparations and critical race theory is taking over the world of medicine and health care.”

We have covered many times how medical schools are not being spared the meritocracy purge in the name of racial identity politics.

We have focused on SUNY-Upstate Medical University, where we had to go to court to get them to turn over documents about their racial identity programming. That battle will continue because though the court ordered documents produced, the production we received is absurdly heavily redacted. For *some* reason, the administrators at SUNY-Upstate Medical University really don’t want the public to see what they are doing and how they got there.

It’s not just at SUNY-Upstate Medical. Critical Race activism is deeply embedded now throughout medical schools.

Activist Ibram Kendi was invited to speak by the Boston University School of Public Health on injecting his “antiracism” agenda into medical care. (Featured Image)

John Murawski at Real Clear Investigations has a two-part series on how Medicine Is Getting Major Injections of Woke Ideology (Part 1) and As Race ‘Equity’ Advances in Health Care, Signs of a Chilling Effect on Dissent (Part 2).

From Part 1:

The national racial reckoning over reparations and critical race theory is taking over the world of medicine and health care. Prestigious medical journals, top medical schools and elite medical centers are adopting the language of social justice activism and vowing to confront “systemic racism,” dismantle “structural violence” and disrupt “white supremacy” in their institutional cultures….

Rare is the doctor who is willing to publicly question claims of white privilege and implicit bias in the healthcare system, and already several doctors who have publicly pushed back have been demoted and have filed legal actions alleging retaliation. This year the medical profession received an unequivocal message when two editors of the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association resigned under pressure over a podcast that aired opinions expressing skepticism that the United States is plagued by systemic racism….

The movement is just beginning reshape the practice of medicine, but a primary assumption is that white doctors and institutions are pervaded with unconscious bias, and that black doctors, who are significantly underrepresented in the profession, would provide better care to black patients. But because black students typically get lower scores and lower grades, increasing the ranks of African American and other minority practitioners would likely require moving away from a reliance on conventional measures of academic qualification, such as undergraduate grades and standardized test scores.

Medical education is particularly politicized:

Medical schools are adding units on critical race theory, intersectionality, implicit bias, identity, oppression, allyship, power and privilege to their curricula. Medical students are learning about medical exploitation and medical experimentation on enslaved blacks, black prisoners and other unwitting subjects. And staple reading assignments in med schools feature such non-medical polemics as Robin DiAngelo’s “White Fragility” and Ibram X. Kendi’s “How to Be an Antiracist.”

This year alone, six state medical boards have added a requirement for training in “antiracism,” implicit bias or cultural competency for doctors in some practice areas to be eligible for a medical license, raising the total to 13 jurisdictions that require such training; eight other board are reviewing such proposals, according to the Federation of State Medical Boards.

I was interviewed at length by Murawski, and he quoted me in Part 1:

“It’s a very ideological approach to things: ‘People are going to die, so you have to agree with everything I say. And if you disagree with it, you want people to die apparently,’ ” said William Jacobson, clinical professor of law at Cornell Law School and president of the Legal Insurrection Foundation, which runs the conservative websites legalinsurrection.com and criticalrace.org.

“And it also is extremely lucrative for consultants and administrators who have a vested interested in perpetuating the problem and these efforts,” said Jacobson, who is involved in litigation against SUNY Upstate Medical University for internal communications related to the school’s planned equity strategy.

***

But the critics say that applying critical race theory to medicine too often devolves into an exercise in conformational bias that seeks only the evidence that confirms the theory of systemic racism, ignores or disallows contradictory evidence, and imposes forced interpretations on complex data.

“They start with the conclusion. And there can be no deviation from the conclusion,” said Jacobson, the conservative law professor at Cornell. “You cannot question the conclusion because the conclusion of systemic racism is the starting point. It stifles dissenting views. It stifles open inquiry.”

Part 2 of the investigation focuses on the silencing of dissenting voices:

The national movement to eradicate what activists call systemic racism and white privilege from medicine and health care has few public critics in the medical profession. A possible reason: Skeptics who have questioned these efforts have been subject to harsh Twitter campaigns, professional demotions and other blowback….

Such incidents are noteworthy because of their eerily scripted language of moral outrage and public denunciation, coming from the nation’s highest levels of professional achievement, often on internal issues that would typically be handled with sensitivity and discretion as personnel matters….

Those who are concerned by the social justice fervor sweeping through the medical profession say that such examples are evidence of the movement’s chilling effect on open debate of complex social issues.

The destruction of so many institutions at such a swift pace is staggering. Welcome to the future of racialized and politicized medicine, where it’s inevitable that the medical profession will end up in the service of politics, like Big Tech already is.

Yes it is and as a nurse, I made a decision I was not going to go along to get along, but I am old and was able to retire

If Black people want just Black Dr’s, well good luck with that

From many things I’ve read over the years, it appears the last thing a black person wants is an affirmative action doctor.

    Sid6.7 in reply to gonzotx. | August 19, 2021 at 2:41 pm

It’s the white people who will be stuck with angry black doctors and other POCs who hate them that I worry about.

Ty Professor… now do air traffic controllers…

I would look at BSN programs (Bachelor of Nursing). Even 10 years ago they were infested with leftists. With the advent of CRT/anti-white racism I believe they are even worse. Nurses are the true front line of medical care. Doctors pronounce, nurses execute.

I already know that getting a black doctor is close to a death warrant anyway. I hope that will not be true for a black nurse (many who I have known have been excellent under the ‘racist’ system of meritocracy).

Well, that’s not exactly what is happening. Instead, woke white medical professionals are making decisions on whom to treat based on their skin color. They are proud of it: https://thefederalist.com/2021/04/08/harvard-doctors-promote-race-based-discrimination-in-boston-hospital-in-order-to-be-antiracist/

I would trust a black doctor who treated me as a human being over a woke white asking me what pronoun I prefer. Any day of any week.

      Exactly this.

alohahola in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | August 12, 2021 at 4:52 am

Why are you trusting anyone who asks you whether you smoke, how much alcohol you drink, or if you’re being beaten at home?

I no longer disclose any such information. I don’t even disclose flu shot status, which I don’t recall them asking about before.

      It’s all slippery slope stuff.

Anacleto Mitraglia in reply to alohahola. | August 12, 2021 at 7:37 am

Actually, THAT is medical information. I assume when you take you car to the mechanic, you tell them about what oil you put in the gear, when you changed the plugs last, if it had previous issues…

And isn’t it true that with the drinking in particular, if you’re about to undergo something that requires anesthesia they need to know how much you consume?

As for the mention of guns, I’m not a kid (obviously) but while I do not get the “do you have guns” question 100% of the time, it gets asked on occasion.

gonzotx in reply to alohahola. | August 12, 2021 at 8:55 am

Government demands those questions, smoking is relevant as is drinking, but the rest are ridiculous.
I always put jokes on them
I never get a response so I know they aren’t reading them

I agree with you 1000%. My body & only I CAN ANSWER! I don’t give up my brain=thinking just because they have any alphabet soup initials behind their name or to anyone asking have I had vaccine I say “MEDICAL PRIVACY=HIPPA . to them I ask:YOU BEEN TREATED FOR V.D. or had ABORTION? End of questions!

JusticeDelivered in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | August 12, 2021 at 11:01 am

As long as the doctor is actually competent, a high percentage of Affirmative doctors have rubber stamped diplomas’, that is what happens when everything is dumbed down so they can feel good. Regardless of race, I want competent doctors.

This is all that matters when everything is said and done.

What grade did they graduate with what rating? not all medical school graduates who get a degree was an A+,A,B,C.
D will not make it as M.D. Most are average.

alohahola in reply to JusticeDelivered. | August 12, 2021 at 6:05 pm

Nothing wrong with interviewing your doctors and not hiring them!

I’ve walked out of dentist’s offices before if I didn’t like how I was being spoken to by the hygienist or the dentist.

        Buh bye!

gospace in reply to alohahola. | August 12, 2021 at 11:38 pm

I quit a practice because the primary care was being provided by an NP who thought she was the boss of me. My current doctor is Hispanic- and a former Navy Chief Engineer. We speak the same language in more ways than one.

“I would trust a black doctor who treated me as a human being over a woke white asking me what pronoun I prefer.”

You are talking about black doctors who are practicing medicine now as opposed to ones in the future who come out of medical school after being trained by woke white doctors.

Michael Jackson’s cardiologist was warm and caring, took a personal interest and treated him like a human being. Witnesses at the trial praised him highly as one the nicest, friendliest guys you would ever want to meet.

I just spoke today with my friend who is a professor of nursing. She found out that a major healthcare conglomerate has developed a second chance program to recruit disadvataged students for the nursing program. It developed a two year nursing program after which the students get a full ride to finish their Bachelor’s Degree at an expensive private college. You will see more of this.

Um, one of the very best physicians I ever had was a black gynecologist and of course the eminent Ben Carson and many other great physicians are black, so your mass characterization is pretty unfair.

That said, medical education should focus on assessing and maintaining wellness coupled with the diagnosis and treatment of disease. To the extent that there are race and sex differences in disease prevalence etc, they need to be incorporated into training. Ideology has no place in medical education or training.

Highly recommend the following in this context:

Bari is must read as is Glen Greenwald. She is all over this and the refutation of science being promulgated by the fascist pro trans community in medical education.

I am in my 50s and think its best to stick with older physicians for the rest of my life but fear for my children who will have to navigate the destruction of the best healthcare system on earth by the woke.

In my dealings with a number of medical chat boards, and the commentary expressed therein, I can say that medicine is about the same as every other profession or occupation.
The medical establishment, schools, journals, and ivory tower types are irremediably woke. Simply peruse the front page of any recent New England Journal of Medicine to confirm this.
However, doctors and nurses out in the community trenches still believe in learned skills, knowledge, and consideration for the patients’ best interests, and care little about the race or gender of anyone concerned.

They may be fighting a losing battle, but the towel has not been thrown in.

Medical students are learning about medical exploitation and medical experimentation on enslaved blacks, black prisoners and other unwitting subjects.

This should be heartening to hear. It would mean that more health professionals would more clearly see what is going on with the global COVID “vaccine” experiment, no?

henrybowman in reply to alohahola. | August 12, 2021 at 7:03 am

My understanding is that ‘vaccine hesitancy” is greater among nonwhites than among whites. I’m confident that the legacy of Tuskegee contributes in at least some way to that.

If the Tuskegee legacy had any effect there would be more black pilots in the military. About 20 percent of the U.S. military is black, however, the number of black pilots in the military is around 2%. You can pretend to be a doctor like Frank Abagnale, but if you can’t pretend that you know how to fly.

UserP in reply to UserP. | August 12, 2021 at 9:01 am

oops. I meant to say, “can’t pretend to be a pilot if you don’t know how to fly.”

The medical profession can get away with it because If you say you prefer to see a competent doctor you are a racist. But if the pilot can’t fly, the pilot can’t fly.

NavyMustang in reply to UserP. | August 12, 2021 at 10:09 am

Henry is not talking about the Tuskegee airmen. He is referring to the Tuskegee medical experiments on blacks between the 30s and 70s.

        See this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuskegee_Syphilis_Study

I know. But both came from there. Why does one have an effect and the other doesn’t?

I mentioned medical, did I not? Why do so many want to go into medical and not become pilots? Because getting into medical is easier—that’s my point. It’s also the subject of the article. The result is lot of doctors are no more qualified than Frank Abagnale, But if you can’t fly, you can’t fly.

Anacleto Mitraglia | August 12, 2021 at 7:47 am

Actually, the corruption in the medical brass started at least in the seventies, when they removed homosexuality from the DSM due to political pressure. And don’t get me started on the doctors in Nazi Germany, the Japanese in the forties, or the Soviet until the collapse of the wall.
Truth is, Medicine is a very political field, always been, always will. Now the association of Pediatricians recommends puberty blockers to kids, when not mutilation surgery altogether.
In Holland and Belgium, they’re OK with euthanizing disabled children, even against their will.
As a doctor myself, I am disgusted.
Do you have the Hyppocrates Oath, in America?

    WORSE THAN YOU THINK

Doctors who pride themselves as being educated and smart – often do not even have the self-awareness to realize they are being indoctrinated (brainwashed) into becoming racists.

I was at a dinner with a couple of NYC woke doctors and after hearing them lecture the table about bring Black people to the front of the line for health services – I asked them how they would feel if the administrators at their Hospital made a policy to service all whites first. They glared at me and the room was silent for about 5 seconds. Then I said – that is just as racist and giving preference to any race. They proceeded to argue that, no – this is different.

I was the only person to point out the flaw in their reasoning and no one single person objected when they argued that their racism is a “different and good racism”. One person afterward told me how rude I was to make such a statement and that it made them think that I may be a racist. (because I don’t support the fashionable racism of the day). We have not spoken since.

This type of group think” has been building for years with no pushback. It has now metastasized. It will take years to stop this or to reverse this. It has been shown by many studies that the worldview formed in the years 10 to 18 are hard to change later in life. Marxists know tat if they can infect your kids with their ideology – they can rule the country. That, in my opinion, is why they are so adamant about hiding CRT and other indoctrination activities from parents (CRT is only the latest and most egregious of the things inflicted by these people).

alohahola in reply to Ben Kent. | August 12, 2021 at 6:13 pm

“It has been shown by many studies that the worldview formed in the years 10 to 18 are hard to change later in life. Marxists know tat if they can infect your kids with their ideology – they can rule the country.”

If that is the case, then how can a country like Hungary be where it’s at today?

45+ years of Marxist schooling and the majority of the population supports a effective conservative leader.

Ben Kent in reply to alohahola. | August 13, 2021 at 8:45 am

Hungary is a case where society was raped by the dictatorship. This happens often when the people are freed from a brutal regime. Meaning Hungary and other eastern European countries are in a different category.

By the way, even after the regime change – there are still millions of Hungarians who want a return to communism or some new form of Marxism. It’s weirdly like wanting to marry the rapist. They are psychologically damaged.

Kepha H in reply to Ben Kent. | August 16, 2021 at 10:16 am

Sooner or later, too many people see through the lies and manipulation of totalitarian regimes, and the totalitarian regime can survive only by acting as Deng Xiaoping and Li Peng did in June of 1989. After that, the expectation of the governed is that should they rebel, they’ll be squashed like a bug. But, it then reaches the point where they realize they are part of a population of too many bugs for all to be squash.

Ass a teacher, I would urge conservative students in all disciplines to organize. Do the extra self-education outside the classroom, and question, question, question. When someone raises “coded language”, point out that the use of the term “coded language” is itself fraught with often unfair assumptions and is a “coded term” designed to attack, vilify, and dehumanize the people its used against. Same with “dog whistle”. If identity politics are pushed, demand the instructor to show where everyone’s amour propre ends and “racism” begins.

Because education is not the only thing that creates a “worldview.” Unfortunately (from the point of view of Communists and other indoctrinators) reality sometimes has an influence, too.

Yeah, in former Eastern Europe (probably USSR, too), you would have to “tip” your doctor in order to get good care and survive a surgery.

Actually, it’s probably still that way–a die-hard custom.

Kepha H in reply to alohahola. | August 16, 2021 at 10:20 am

In the 1990’s, when I lived in Guangzhou, while it was still a Communist system, the physicians all had after-hours private practices just to make ends meet–even if it could get them ten years in laogai.

As for affirmative action, I’d urge all to re-read Solzhenitsyn’s _Cancer Ward_, and note the description of a Dr. Khalmukhamadov.

Suggestion: When wokesters are lying in hospital beds, slowly dying from being misdiagnosed by their woke doctors and/or from the tender attentions of incompetent-but-PC nurses, they should direct their medical bills to Ibram X. Kendi for payment.

I am not so sure about “1984.” In any event,, Atlas Shrugged does not apply well to today’s situation in my view. I do not see any shrugging. I do see lots of mounting oppression. “1984” seems to be a better glimpse into the future.

I guess a law degree from the Coney Island School of Law and Dance is now as good as any.

The odd part of this is entire situation, there are huge numbers of Asian and people from the India / Pakistan region of the world in medicine these days. Amazing how they weren’t repressed by the white people.

    Katy L. Stamper in reply to buck61. | August 12, 2021 at 2:19 pm

I suspect they were FAVORED over white people. Why are there fewer and fewer Americans in medicine? They are our schools. Our customs, our way of life, makes them possible. What is the source of the money making them favor foreigners?

    We deserve to know.

“increasing the ranks of African American and other minority practitioners would likely require moving away from a reliance on conventional measures of academic qualification, such as undergraduate grades and standardized test scores.”

Unfortunately, this translates to “dropping quality for the sake of diversity”. What you will find is that racism actually increases as people start to move toward physicians that are Asian or White.

Honesty, since whites and asians must score extremely high even to get into med school now because of diversity quotas, I know they have to be far better than the minority candidates.

Sad, but true.

In many many ways, it is good to be old. In my final days to speed me along, I would like a physician (with no preference as to race) who was taught by professors who believe that I am a white supremacist or a member of the patriarchy and deserve to die.

Kaiser Hospital’s CEO, Greg Adams, (https://about.kaiserpermanente.org/who-we-are/leadership-team/national-leaders/greg-a-adams) is a real piece of work. He gave a speech on Youtube that was later taken down where he talked about “Equity” in health care delivery. That is code for lowering the standards of outcome for non-racially preferred groups (ie Whites).

Kaiser is now in the hands of people who are hardcore Communists and you would be wise to get the hell out. Nothing good can come out of such an alliance of Communists and Corporate fascists.

One can ignore Bell Curves, but they are still there regardless.
