Chicago Public Schools Requires Everyone to Wear a Mask

Chicago Public Schools Requires Everyone to Wear a Mask

I thought CPS and the unions wanted to follow CDC guidelines. Why all of a sudden follow the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations?

Do you remember when the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the union fought each other over science to reopen the schools? CPS said everyone should follow the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations.

Following the science only happens when it benefits their narrative.

CPS will require all students and teachers to wear masks, even if they had the COVID-19 vaccine:

“Based on feedback from our public health experts at the local, state and federal levels, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), we will require that masks/cloth face coverings continue to be worn indoors by everyone, regardless of vaccination status, except for while eating or drinking. This includes students, educators, support staff and all visitors to school buildings,” interim CPS Chief Executive Officer José Torres wrote in a letter to parents.

“Face coverings may be removed for outdoor activities, such as recess and some sports activities. Continuing to require masks will help make sure those in our school communities who are not yet eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, which encompasses the majority of our students, remain as safe as possible.”

Something tells me the union is behind the decision.

The CDC said vaccinated students 12 and older and teachers do not need a mask. The AAP said everyone should wear a mask.

The CDC also said local officials can make their own decisions, but advised they use the local COVID numbers as guidance.

Chicago has seen a slight spike in COVID-19 with only 115 new cases each day. Only 115! Do you know how many people live in Chicago?! That number is barely a blip on the radar. The numbers show “five hospitalizations per 100,000 people.”

The Chicago Archdiocese said the vaccinated teachers and students in its schools will not have to wear a mask.

At least the kids are going back to in-person school. But CPS and the union can never scream science or push CDC recommendations again to get what they want.

Now if they could only convince the mayor to wear a bag over her head, it might be worth it.

Where’s the hard data?
At what cost?
Compared to what? Did we do this for AIDS, hepatitis, or a whole host of other diseases?

“Compared to what? Did we do this for AIDS, hepatitis, or a whole host of other diseases?”

Actually, in the 80’s, they wanted everyone to wear condoms despite knowing the disease was primarily spread by a particular sexual activity that was not prevalent in the much larger heterosexual community. So to avoid stigmatization of the homosexual community, they pretended everyone was at equal risk and avoided advising people to avoid the at risk behavior. They downplayed the actual solution, which was to educate people from engaging in certain at risk sexual practices. This was the beginning of the liberal politicization of healthcare and the health sciences.

Indeed. And the little troll, Fauci, was at the center of those decisions too.

Hundreds of thousands of socially liberal trans/homosexual males were exposed to infection and excess deaths in order to sustain the handmade tale of political congruence (“=”) and social progress. Well, at least it was their choice, and no wholly innocent lives were aborted without consent. Still, one step forward, two steps backward.

did anyone ever do a study of the percentage of homosexual males that were employed at the CDC at that time!!

‘This was the beginning of the liberal politicization of healthcare and the health sciences.”

Yep, and soon thereafter came the smoking bans.

CommoChief in reply to alohahola. | July 23, 2021 at 7:22 pm

And huge settlements to the States that were predicted on using the funds for smoking cessation programs and medical costs attributed to smoking.

Except that the money was largely squandered by many States. So they raised taxes. Then raised them again and again. Now we have a lucrative black market for untaxed cigarettes.

Of course the PD must enforce the law, which leads to encounters which lead to resistance which lead to ….riots.

You want data? Here it is. Posting the same links as on the last mask thread.

The kind of masks they are requiring for school children are worthless against respiratory viruses, which COVID-19 is. ALL of the research demonstrates this, including that silly CDC article that found a 1% effect.

    https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7010e3.htm?s_cid=mm7010e3_w

But here is what the CDC has to say about other respiratory viruses, such as influenza

    https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/5/19-0994_article

Disposable medical masks (also known as surgical masks) are loose-fitting devices that were designed to be worn by medical personnel to protect accidental contamination of patient wounds, and to protect the wearer against splashes or sprays of bodily fluids (36). There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza.

The good news, we have something that works. What works is zinc plus an ionophore, applied as soon as symptoms emerge. In a week, you can have the whole school clear, for cheap.

You don’t even have to pull out the big guns at that stage, but you can, again, for cheap and quick resolution.

Even better, vitamin D supplements safeguard the immune system.

How many lives could be saved? Even a modest underfunded partially successful vitamin D “supplementation or sunshine” program (“SOS”) could easily cut the death rate in half. Look at the death rate chart. The increase in deaths for the nations with the lowest vitamin D is more than twice that of even the nations that had only modestly better vitamin D levels.

    How much D?

Follow the science. Stop using masks. Use those safe, cheap drugs.

Weird. The teachers I know from up north are all insanely terrified of covid. As in cartoon elephant scared of a mouse terrified.

Brave Sir Robbin in reply to Dathurtz. | July 23, 2021 at 1:53 pm

Fear makes people irrational. To require children with no risk of serious health consequences from COVID to take an experimental drug that, with current data, indicates a substantial risk to young healthy people, is immoral and unethical.

The federal government has provided immunity to the “vaccine” producers, but there should not be any immunity to someone who requires you to take this experimental “vaccine” to receive a service, they they, the person demanding exposure the experimental “vaccine,” are liable for any adverse consequences.

Dathurtz in reply to Brave Sir Robbin. | July 23, 2021 at 2:06 pm

I agree. I got bothered last year that teachers/students were required to wear cloth masks but nobody bothered to remind us that you should change them pretty frequently or it is easy to get sick.

Brave Sir Robbin in reply to Dathurtz. | July 23, 2021 at 2:14 pm

This mask stupidity is not just useless, it is counterproductive to protection against COVID (because people falsely believe that if they wear a mask they are protected) and general health and wellbeing.

Sweden’s model, which is not perfect because they did yield to some degree to external international stupidity is a much better public health model, and the normal practice before this abysmal COVID response.

Do NOT use children as experimental subjects! By definition, they are unable to provide informed consent.

When I had to stay in the hospital the only way I’d get a new mask was to ask for one, otherwise I could wear the same one from start to finish (well, except for the times I wasn’t wearing one since no one else was around or I was eating). And I’d have bet good money that quite a few other patients were wearing the same masks day after day.

“At least the kids are going back to in-person school. But CPS and the union can never scream science or push CDC recommendations again to get what they want.”

Sure they can! Who will hold them accountable? The media? HA! The politicians? Never in a million years! Parents? This is Chicago, where the “corporeally-challenged” are a huge voting block that decide every election.

This is part of a large push to lock the country down again. Another lockdown will pave the way for a ban on in-person voting and a nationwide mandate for voting by mail. Then pretty much any election anywhere will be subjected to the same massive fraud we saw in 2020.

““At least the kids are going back to in-person school.”

I cannot say that if enrolled in the Chicago Public School system this is necessarily a good thing.

I think forcing small preschool children to mask wear is to condition them.
Masks now, masks forever.

    n.n in reply to Skip. | July 23, 2021 at 3:36 pm

With cause, it would be justifiable. But, the droplet spread theory did not pan out, asymptomatic spread was negligible in the asserted transmission modes, and anything short of N95 respirators following strict protocol does not offer transmission control of aerosols, let alone fecal transmission, and no masks offer source control.

Considering the schools, blindfolds and earplugs would be a good idea.

Under what basis? At best the data on masks is mixed in terms of prevention for others. It offers zero benefit to the wearer.

If masks are not effective or only marginally so under ideal conditions then invoking ‘public health’ is akin to an incantation. Simply saying for public health reasons doesn’t remove the burden to demonstrate that the policy is effective.

Same with college students and mandatory vax. If the vaccines don’t prevent transmission, clearly they don’t, then what basis are the Universities relying upon?

The Jacobson case was 115 years ago. We have a good bit more understanding today as to the practical limits of vaccines. Especially for Rona. That case allowed mandatory vax to prevent transmission. The delta variant can be acquired and transmitted from a vaccinated person to another vaccinated person.

The precedent for a mandatory vax regime doesn’t fit the circumstances of Rona, therefore any mandatory scheme isn’t lawful. IMO.

If you can swing it, homeschooling is the way to go.

No masks, no CRT, no leftist indoctrination.

Imagine if a public school were to prioritize students’ educational needs over the demands of the school’s union workforce. Why, you might not recognize the place!

By now it’s become all too apparent that these schools are run primarily by and for the benefit of their union workforce, and the very concept that student’s needs might be privileged over those of the employees remains entirely foreign to public-school culture. Nonetheless, despite widespread realization of this, all too many parent continue to make an exception for “their” school, the one their children attend (or attended).

Wisconsin partially dealt with this with Act 10, which substantially reduced the power of teachers unions, plus a limited school choice program. While these have not come close to solving all public school problems, it’s mitigated some of the worst abuses.

Not that Wisconsin schools are now all excellent: Milwaukee Public Schools in particular remains seemingly hopeless, despite the fire-hose of funding that it has captured. Although at least some MPS students can escape to Choice schools.

I do not expect any similar reforms in Illinois, as recent events have shown that absolutely no state or city politician has the will and the means to stand against the will of these unions.
