Student Journalist Thinks White Students on Spring Break is ‘Colonial Violence’

“my white peers at this university continued to disappoint me with their performative activism and how they followed in the footsteps of their violent white supremacist ancestors”

Progressive college students sure seem comfortable openly flouting their racial prejudices, don’t they?

The College Fix reports:

White students on spring break is ‘colonial violence,’ campus journalist says

A self-described activist journalist believes white students going on spring break perpetuates “colonial violence.”

Andre Lawes Menchavez, a “Filipinx, Indigenous, and queer activist who’s […] constantly seeking to lift up marginalized communities through his work,” wrote earlier this month in the University of Washington’s The Daily that colleges’ spring breaks remind him that he “can’t trust white people.”

“Spring break came, and in typical fashion, my white peers at this university continued to disappoint me with their performative activism and how they followed in the footsteps of their violent white supremacist ancestors,” Menchavez wrote. “[T]hey travelled to Hawaii and Mexico, endangering the lives of local communities for the sake of their own aesthetic pleasure.”

Worse still, the pallid-hued vacationers posted about their “colonial pursuits” on social media.

The activist journalist (at left) claims local Hawaiians referred to tourism during the COVID pandemic as a “form of terrorism.” Never mind that spring breaks happened recently, whereas Menchavez links to a New York Times story from November to bolster his claim.

Also try to make sense of this: He complains about “the whites” in Greek organizations who threw “super-spreader parties” … while “protests for Black lives amid the death of George Floyd” took place just down the street.

From the op-ed:

“Although vaccines are rolling out all over America, I don’t think it is time to be exploring other places,” Bailey Concepcion, a second-year public health major from Guam who serves as the cultural chair of the UW’s Micronesian Islands Club, said in an email. “Thinking about a place like Hawaii, I know that even before the pandemic, tourists would disrespect the island in many ways. To me, by saying you are in support of minority communities, it does not make sense that you would neglect the locals’ wishes.”

I simply can no longer trust that the white folks around me are truly the anti-racist allies they say they are for this reason. …

Sounds like somebody didn’t get invited on a Spring Break trip.

Sounds like somebody couldn’t cough up the cash (or the credit).

Somebody buy this brat a pair of tinfoil Speedos and a ticket back to Filipinx (which I believe is in the Andromeda Galaxy).

Sounds to me Iike someone needs to be smacked around. Hard. And for quite a while. And told to shut up, no one wants to hear the sniveling and whining.

I noticed the identification as Filipino, “indigenous”, and “queer”. I suggest that viewing one’s life through those prisms leads to constant misery no matter what the topic.

I have but one message: Shut in the direction of “up”.

The existence of white people is “violence” to some of these people. If my very existence offends you, I don’t particularly care. unless you present me with violence, in which case I will be forced to respond. Is that where we really want to go?

It must be nice living in a world when you can just put some random words together and have people act as if you’re talking sense.

I predict this person will soon land a 6-figure a year job, writing exactly the same kind of stuff, whether or not anyone ever reads it.

The large party tourism scene is not a “white” phenomenon. For decades, students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the mid-Atlantic would travel to Virginia Beach VA on Labor Day weekend to take over the town and book all of the hotel rooms. The police had to be called out to maintain order. Finally, the town fathers solved the problem by hosting the Rock n Roll Half Marathon and blocking out all of the hotel rooms for runners that weekend.

Ask any resident, restrateur, hotelier, or store clerk in Florida resort towns what BLACKS on spring break “represent”.

IOW, white people are racists, born and forever. Go ahead, make it a formal doctrine of your new faith. I and other formerly-genial whites will be happy to oblige.

If Hawaiians think my visit insults them I’m happy not to direct my tourism spending their way. I’m sure impoverishment is morally superior to taking my money.

D’what?
