Rep. Val Demings Taking on Rubio for Senate in 2022

Rep. Val Demings Taking on Rubio for Senate in 2022

Do the Democrats really think this will work? Rubio has won two statewide general elections. He’s also bilingual, which appeals to the Hispanic population.

The Democrats have a “big-name candidate” to try to oust Sen. Marco Rubio in 2022.

Florida’s 10th Congressional District Rep. Val Demings decided to run for the Senate seat instead of governor.

From Politico:

For months, Demings mulled which statewide office to pursue, but decided she could do the most good by taking on the two-term senator, according to several Democrats familiar with her thinking.

“I would’ve supported her running for governor, but this is the right fit for her and for us,” said Alex Sink, a former Florida chief financial officer who narrowly lost her 2010 bid for governor against Rick Scott, who is now a senator.

“She’s going to draw a contrast between who she is and how she represents Florida vs. Marco Rubio, who a lot of people where I live never see him.”

Sink said she was recently on a Zoom call with Demings and activists with Ruth’s List, the Florida-based organization dedicated to electing women who support abortion rights, and it was clear that she and national Democrats felt she would represent the party’s best chance to put Republicans on defense as they try to take back the U.S. Senate.

Ah, yes. A group that pushes for women who support infanticide. Always the people to trust.

Demings served as Orlando’s “first Black woman police chief.” She has been representing the city in Congress since 2016 where she sat on the first impeachment committee as the only non-lawyer.

Democrats floated Demings’ name as a possible running mate for then-candidate Joe Biden.

Oh, this is funny. One top advisor compared Demings to Rubio:

“She’s the daughter of a maid and a janitor who became the first Black woman police chief in Orlando. He’s the son of a maid and a bartender who’s a career politician.”

This top advisor “forgot” to mention Rubio’s parents fled Fulgencio Batista’s regime in Cuba two years before Fidel Castro took power.

Rubio’s maternal grandfather went back to Cuba in 1959 but fled Communist Cuba in 1962 without a visa. His mother went back to Cuba and his father planned to follow. But the communism influenced the family to stay in America.

I’m sure the top advisor did not mean to leave out that important information. Of course not.

But will this work? Marc Caputo at Politico made these points:

  • Rubio has won two statewide general elections
  • Rubio is bilingual, which makes him appealing to the Hispanic population
  • The Hispanic population went Republican big time in the last general election
  • 17% of the registered voters in Florida are Hispanic. 14% of the registered voters are black.

Demmings vs Rubio

word on the street is blacks don’t like gays

so, not a shocker

If she doesn’t win, it will be blamed on racism.

henrybowman in reply to UJ. | May 19, 2021 at 2:16 am

But it will be because of Hispanics… and only white people can be racist.
Looks like DNC is going to have to mail white ID cards to Florida Hispanics again.
Wonder if they still have any left over from the Zimmerman trial?

I was looking at Florida demographics/voting habits when evaluating it as a possible destination in fleeing our blue state. I like it. I like it a lot.

Texas McGun control Soy boy had a better chance of beating Cruz and turning Texas blue.

Way to commit political suicide.

No one in Florida will vote for her vs Rubio. She is in the “defund the police” party – which negates her experience as a police officer.

Only explanation = Woke Brain Fog.

Living in a Woke bubble can cause people to lose any sense of reality.

Not running for Governor is an indication they think she can’t beat DeSantis in 2022. They think she has a better shot against Rubio.

And she might actually have a better shot against Rubio because Rubio has hurt himself politically the last few years. I still think he’ll win because Demings is full defund police crazy and Florida isn’t going for that but it would be a closer thing than going against DeSantis.

The Real Truth in reply to TheOldZombie. | May 19, 2021 at 11:52 am

DeSantis is very well-liked, and there is even talk of putting him on the Presidential ticket. There is NO way that she would beat him! I don’t think that she would beat Rubio either, because of her terrible “Defund The Police” policy. The fact that her father was in law enforcement does NOT help, when SHE is obviously AGAINST Law Enforcement !

CaptTee in reply to TheOldZombie. | May 19, 2021 at 1:22 pm

OR she is just running a State-wide campaign now to build name recognition for 4 years from now when DeSantis is term-limited and can’t run. Maybe she figures a a loss running for Senate now wouldn’t hurt her as much in for years as a loss running for Governor would.

She thinks voters will confuse her with Burger Beagle Stacey Abrams, and she’ll win the election this time for sure!!!

stevewhitemd | May 18, 2021 at 5:46 pm

One would think the smart play for her is to stand pat and run for reelection in 2022. She’d win that race. Instead, she’s going to run against Rubio and most likely lose. Her seat will go elsewhere (likely another D).

So why is she doing it, when one of the rules of politics-as-life is that you don’t run a race that up front you know you’re likely to lose. She can’t seriously think she’ll beat Rubio. My bet is that she’s playing for a NGO or Biden administration position. Perhaps she’s decided that that is better than being a backbench Congress-critter. She runs and shows the flag, she loses, and then she’s rewarded for her ‘brave’ stance.

Or she believes that the fix is in.

Kevin in reply to stevewhitemd. | May 18, 2021 at 6:23 pm

She truly thinks she can beat Rubio. The depths of self delusion these leftists can plumb is truly astounding. She probably sees herself as a Warnock style candidate, a bomb thrower who will benefit from the “white privilege” BS sweeping the nation. Her problem is that she has a record that she has to run from. She won’t get the hard left vote because she’s an ex-cop. She won’t get the LEO/law and order vote because she’s full bore Defundist. And she can’t run on her House record because she doesn’t have one. She is banking on more of the electoral shenanigans that won for Warnock, Ossoff, Biden, etc., in 2020. Without a national race to deflect attention away from Dems seeking the zombie vote, that won’t happen again. The main thing to remember about Demings is that first and foremost she’s an incredibly dumb Dem who wouldn’t be in Congress but for the gerrymandering of districts the Voting Rights Act has embedded in the law of Southern states. Her stupidity is such that she makes AOC look like a Rhodes Scholar. And THAT’S stupid.

If I were betting on the outcome, I’d put my money on Rubio, but it’s Florida (and I live here too), so who can say for sure?

Consider that the nation’s best governor, Ron DeSantis, won by a mere 33,000 votes over a black radical later found dead drunk in a sleazy Miami hotel room on the down low in the presence of meth use. Rubio should take nothing for granted.

      Biden/Harris ‘beat’ Trump/Pence.
Funny things happen when voting machines are involved.

In her favor, she supported the innocence of the officer who killed Ma’Khia Bryant. That might be because of her experience as a chief of police.

Her claim to fame is that she was one of the house impeachment managers for impeachment 1.0.

I live in her district. There are a lot of Democrats here.

If anyone other than Rubio was running, she might win.

MoeHowardwasright | May 18, 2021 at 6:56 pm

What makes anyone believe that Rubio will be the R candidate. There are plenty of ambitious R’s that can run a more conservative race than this rino Rubio. As a Florida resident I can tell you that he is not, repeat, not liked by conservatives. He is owned lock stock and barrel by McTurtle.

stevewhitemd in reply to MoeHowardwasright. | May 18, 2021 at 8:25 pm

If any of them wish to go against Rubio in the primary, now is about the time they should be announcing.

I am no Rubio fan, but this (Moe, not you, Steve) is exactly how and why we keep losing. A primary challenge to Rubio is the last thing we need if he’s being challenged by a darling of the BLM/antifa left. Why this is hard is a mystery to me, but here it is again. Sigh.

henrybowman in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | May 19, 2021 at 2:25 am

Because we’re tired of the last 50 years of gaslit wisdom insisting that it is always preferable to fill a seat with a covert socialist rather than an overt socialist, as long as his lapel pin is the proper color.

When you use the words “we keep losing” in this context, we get the feeling that you are too willing to be satisfied with “victory in name only.” For example if you consider the election of either Bush to have ben a victory, you too might be a redwreck.

Rubio is untrustworthy, has a great potential for financial corruption, and wants both mass amnesty and far more gun control than I will ever support (we have too much now), but I do not believe he is a communist or that he wants American destroyed. Val Demings is and does.

Why should the right damage its best candidate for the job and pave the way for her? It makes no sense at all to me.

You can call me a “redwreck” all you want, but I am not moving. And I suspect you aren’t, either, even if I did decide to stoop to calling you names.

Put another way: can you think of anything I can call you that you would go, “gee, Fuzzy, you’re right, let’s back Rubio even though he’s not perfect because he’s better than the commie lunatic who wants to destroy America!” Probably not, right? Same here

Keep slinging mud at me, and I just dig in more (mostly because if you are calling me names instead of making a case, you are flailing miserably). Explain to me why having Demings as my Senator is better for me and my state and our country than having Rubio. I might listen to that argument (if it’s an actual argument and not “because “redwreck”). Or we can just agree to disagree.

healthguyfsu in reply to henrybowman. | May 19, 2021 at 3:29 am

I see a problem with both sides of this stubborn argument and those dug in.

You have to be willing to compromise to win. Dems have done it and hold power for what I believe is temporary. The only reason they might be holding on longer is because the gross cover job being applied by their allies in media and education. There will be only so long they can plug holes in the dike though.

Stay the course and vote for the best option available even if your candidate loses the primary. Fuzzy, I think you are being a bit too sensitive as he did provide something of an argument (although not particularly elaborate). Neither of you can claim the high ground either with the “look how what you’ve done so far has worked out”. That points fingers at both sides of this debate because both sides have done what they do and led us to this point. henry, suck it up and vote…fight like hell before that but vote afterwards…don’t be the sore loser that screws things up worse.

Great comment, healthyguy! I would never not vote or fail to support our eventual candidate; if Rubio loses a primary challenge from a more conservative candidate, of couse I would vote for that person! Heck, in that case I wouldn’t be voting against Demings, I’d likely be voting FOR that candidate.

This just seems a particularly dangerous time to relive the Tea Party primary disasters of the ’10s. “I am not a witch” anyone? The Florida Senate seat is not safe, or to put it in Pelosi’s diss of AOC, a glass of water with an “R” after its name is not a given win here. We tinker with this at our peril, I think. But I don’t pack up my toys and stomp off if I don’t get my way and will absolutely support whomever wins the Florida primary for Senate.

CaptTee in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | May 19, 2021 at 1:32 pm

Rubio is the last Republican protege of Jeb Bush. I say last Republican, because Charlie Crist is a Democrat Congressman!

So, Rubio could be worse. Unfortunately, he is only 75% right. Without a properly groomed replacement, we are stuck with him.

The best way to get rid of Rubio is to get strong replacement and conviince Rubio to run for President again, then have Florida vote for someone else in the Primary.

I live in Florida, too, and while I am not a fan of Rubio, I think it would be a huge and incredibly self-defeating mistake to primary him at this juncture. I’m a conservative (an actual conservative, not a Rubio RINO), and I don’t want to risk him being weakened by a primary race and see Demings win the seat. That’s not my idea of #Winning. I’m voting for Rubio and can’t imagine a single primary opponent that would change my mind (except Trump; him I’d vote for to replace Rubio since he actually would do so/win. But obviously won’t run for Senate.).

lurker9876 in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | May 19, 2021 at 8:31 am

If Donald Trump, Junior would primary Rubio, I will donate to Junior.

So no more fancy glitzy cowboy hats for VD? LOL!

        CaptTee in reply to lurker9876. | May 19, 2021 at 1:36 pm

We don’t need someone who grew up in New York to represent us in Florida.
        We don’t need carpetbagger politicians.

Full disclosure: I grew up in Illinois, but have lived in Florida longer!

Opposition research needs to begin with her disastrous reign as Orlando police chief. She supervised one of the most violent, abusive police organizations in the U.S. In the top ten for law suits. She will not appeal to the Defund the Police crowd and I believe she will take a different stance. Like all Democrats, she can run on one position and then ignore it if she is successful..

    JimB0 in reply to swampdave. | May 19, 2021 at 2:07 pm

Well said, Dave, Democrats don’t know what “Law and Order” means, or what the Constitution stands for. Democrats only vote for personalities that aren’t the likes of Donald Trump, regardless of whether the policies instituted are good for the country. They would rather elect an incompetent like Joe Biden than see the country excel under a belligerent narcissist. I didn’t like Trump, either, as a person, but he is far and away better than Hidin’ Biden. I do hope the Republicans can come up with a new presidential candidate and get away from Trump. Overall, he is a cancer to the country. I’m an Independent voter, so I would expect some negativity to my statement regarding Trump. Negativity from Dems carries no weight with me.. 🙂

This is great. She’ll lose to Rubio and open up one more spot in the House for Republicans to overtake! Thanks, Val! Better move to a Blue state if you want any chance of winning anything. LOL.

Capitan Haya in reply to JimB0. | May 19, 2021 at 9:52 pm

Demings’s district consistently votes D by a 20-25% margin – there is almost no chance it flips. But that theory holds for most of the other prominent Dems looking to challenge Rubio/ Desantis… Crist, Murphy, Fried.

I think it’s important to remember that de Santis won very (very) narrowly over commie regressive crackhead Democrat Gillum, who was favored to win . . . and very nearly did.

Florida is NOT deep red–though parts of it are, there are also parts that are deep blue, and the deep blue parts tend to have larger numbers who vote than the rest of the state (why Trump winning South Florida Hispanics in larger numbers than he did in ’16 assured him the state when the ruby red Panhandle votes were counted in 2020).

I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade here, but it’s really important to remember that Florida is still one mid-term and one general away from Democrat control. I love living Florida and have thanked God every day since the WuFlu crap started that Gillum did not win, and I do that because I know just how close we came . . . .

Take nothing for granted, do not gloat that Demings will certainly lose to Rubio, particularly if he is damaged by a Republican in a heated primary.
