In Memory of Marquette Prof. John McAdams, Who Won Free Speech Case Against School

“McAdams is most known for a freedom of speech case in 2014 when he posted a blog regarding a Marquette University graduate teacher, and whether the teacher had stopped a student from discussing ideas against same-sex marriage.”

In 2014, Marquette University suspended Professor John McAdams for criticizing a graduate assistant who said she would not tolerate dissent on the issue of gay marriage.

McAdams, who taught political science, noted that Marquette is a Catholic school and wrote about this incident on his blog.

The school claimed it was suspending him at the time for naming the grad assistant, thus putting her life in danger. They also told McAdams that he could be reinstated if he apologized. He refused to do so.

McAdams successfully sued the university in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court.

He passed away recently and somehow the story slipped off our radar.

WTMJ News in Milwaukee reported:

McAdams taught political science at the university for nearly 45 years. He is recognized for his research on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, including his book “JFK Assassination Logic: How to Think about Claims of Conspiracy in 2011.”

McAdams is most known for a freedom of speech case in 2014 when he posted a blog regarding a Marquette University graduate teacher, and whether the teacher had stopped a student from discussing ideas against same-sex marriage. In his blog post, McAdams named the instructor and linked to her personal website that had personal information.

The university suspended McAdams, but McAdams sued the university. The Wisconsin Supreme Court ordered Marquette to reinstate him as a professor in 2018.

McAdams appeared on the Laura Ingraham show in 2018 to discuss the situation:
