Families Angry as San Francisco Seniors Can Return to School for at Least One Day
Lovely. It looks like San Fran is taking advantage of legislation so the district can get $12 million in state reopening grants.
Fantastic news! The San Francisco Teacher’s Union announced seniors could finally return to class..for at least one day with barely four weeks left in the semester.
The schools and students have fought all school year to open the schools.
The union and teachers (I doubt all of them) resisted in the name of safety and health despite private schools opening without problems in the fall.
The move has angered the families and students. The students will not have in-person instruction. The schools only have “in-person supervision.”
But it enraged the parents and some politicians because the deal means “the city’s public schools can qualify for $12 million in state reopening funds.”
School districts only get the money if they open up:
District officials said they believed the plan would mean $12 million in state reopening grants, which by state law required districts to reopen for in-person instruction for elementary school students as well as students in a least one middle or high school grade.
Assemblyman Phil Ting, who sponsored the legislation, said he didn’t know if the district’s plan, which he described as disappointing, met the state requirements.
“It definitely doesn’t meet the spirit of the law,” he said. “Kids were supposed to come back in person. Kids were supposed to come back to learn.”
The goal of the legislation was to get “all the kids back.” But specifically, the law requires opening school for entire middle or high school grade before May 15, “and keeping that grade open all the way to June 2,” Ting said.
Advocacy group Decreasing the Distance wants to know the message the decision sends the “kids about what they are worth and how adults take care of our vulnerable populations, including kids?”
“Does this show them that they matter, or just that the money matters?” the group asked. “One senior told us she wants to return, but not like this. Her reaction: ‘It’s too little too late. School’s over.'”

So the district cheats to get the money. Meanwhile, students are cheated out of an education.

Oh, I disagree. They are following the rules. The law itself sets pre-May 15th through June 2 as the qualifying minimum. While I agree that ‘educators’ and their unions should burn at the stake over this, I think the legislators should be right there with them. (It sure looks to me like they designed this as a way to get school districts their money without actually incurring much risk by actually having kids go back to school for any appreciable amount of time.)
SMost school administrators are really a lower form of life, really politicians of the lowest grade.
My daughter teaches High School in the Raleigh area. She has both in school and distance learning. When they reopened the schools, a lot of kids came back. But, when they learned they could not have lunch with their friends or gather in groups or have social interactions, most decided to go back to distance learning. She now has 4 or 5 in person student a day.
That is fantastic for those students.
If the service is “free”, then you are the product.
I reckon the kids are getting one valuable lesson: just how untrustworthy government institutions are.
The teachers have been getting full salary for doing nothing but posting state-provided material online. Why would they want to go back to working for their pay?
It’s just like the workers who are making more under Biden’s giveaway supplement to unemployment that they make when working. Why would they want to go back to working? This is all socialism at work.
The goal is destruction of our nation from within. And any leftist Jew in on this who thinks they’d escape death from resulting leftist leaders if they succeed – well, the last thing they should be doing is teaching history.

I guess Mr. Ting doesn’t know that “spirit of law” doesn’t equal what the law actually says. You sponsored the law you own it. Where were the other people who voted for this, they are just as feckless.
A responsible politician actually reads the law, considers all the consequences before sponsoring it or voting for it.
Who wrote the actual bill that was passed?
