HAPPENING TONIGHT – Legal Insurrection may be unreachable as we roll out the new website

Any comments entered after 9 p.m. Eastern tonight and overnight will not carry over to the new website.

Sometime this week, hopefully overnight Monday into Tuesday Tuesday into Wednesday, we will roll out Legal Insurrection’s new website. The goal is to do it in the early morning hours Eastern time so that when most people in the U.S. wake up, we have a shiny new website live.

Of course, that’s the current projection, but it could be Wednesday into Thursday, or otherwise, but it should be this week barring something completely unforeseen.

When that happens, there will be a period of time when we will be unreachable. How long? Hopefully not much, but I’m a pessimist on these things. I’m a Murphy’s Law type person by nature.

Also, when we start the process, we will shut down new posting and new comments. So if you come to the website and can’t comment, don’t take it personally. We need to freeze all data in place when we start the migration.

The new website will retain the look and feel of Legal Insurrection, while speeding up the website and making it more stable. Slow loading times have been a frustration for years, and there was no way to seriously improve that speed on the existing platform which was almost a decade old. We’ve removed about half the ads, and taken off the home page a lot of items that slow loading time. All our features will be here, and some new ones as well, but various elements that call for data from other sources are being moved off the homepage.

When the new website goes live, there are bound to be issues that need to be resolved. Particularly for a website like ours that has a dozen years of posts and comments, no matter how much you test on a testing platform, you don’t see all the problems until it’s live. That’s particularly true for how the website appears on mobile phones.

So if we are temporarily unavilable, it does not mean we have been deplatormed or attacked. To the contrary, while no one can be totally safe, other things we are doing in conjunction with the new website will make us safer.

So don’t panic. No need to email. It’s planned.

Thks for the heads up

LI has been a go-to source for facts about many different subjects in a time where facts are few and far between. I’ll be looking out for, and looking forward to the new site.

SField in reply to stl. | March 7, 2021 at 9:46 pm

stl, I meant for that to be a stand alone post. Got a case of the dumb thumbs.

Good luck!

Good for you, thanks for the notice.

Disqus please.

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to BillyHW. | March 7, 2021 at 10:28 pm

No! No!! No!!! Disqus makes it way too easy for trolls to register accounts and then troll on websites destroying any usefulness in the comments. Legal Insurrection doesn’t need that kind of nonsense. We’ve already got mark311 who does plenty of trolling as it is. We don’t need any more.

Leave the commenting system the way it is. It works and keeps the trolls away as they have to register a separate account to comment here. And they won’t do that.

JusticeDelivered in reply to Lucifer Morningstar. | March 8, 2021 at 7:35 am

I haven’t had anywhere near as much BS from Disqus as from Facebook and Twitter.

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to JusticeDelivered. | March 8, 2021 at 10:13 am

Then you’ve been quite lucky in that respect. The owners/moderators of the sites you comment on must be on top of things keeping the trolls at bay. But the reality is that the vast majority of the Disqus user base is simply anonymous troll and spam accounts. You can report them hundreds of times and they simply don’t care to do anything. Period.

And that’s exactly what we do not need around here. A free for all troll forum to disrupt the discussions.

Having discovered years ago, as so many have, that the best spell & grammar checker is the “Submit” button, an edit capability would be nice.

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to ss396. | March 8, 2021 at 10:23 am

If we get an “Edit” button then it should be for a very limited amount of time so that you cannot go back days later and retro-actively edit your comment for any reason. A ten to fifteen minute “window” should be more than enough to edit a post. And then after that time has passed your post stands with all its warts and misspellings.

Evil Otto in reply to BillyHW. | March 8, 2021 at 6:58 am

God no. This site will be flooded with trolls and span within minutes.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to BillyHW. | March 8, 2021 at 1:27 pm

What? And turn this site into another Breitbart? No thanks.

Comment edit please.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to FOAF. | March 8, 2021 at 1:29 pm

And, reversible scoring. Click a down-tick in error, a second click, or clicking the up-tick once to reverse it.

In general, change is bad.

Why change?

I hate unnecessary change.

Thanks for the heads up, best of luck, and looking forward to seeing the new site. Maybe this rollout means extra time for Andrew to write his first post or two on the Floyd matter.

JusticeDelivered in reply to Rab. | March 8, 2021 at 7:42 am

Floyd sure looked like a throwback. What some people lack in analytical capabilities, they make up for in ability to lie a blue streak.

healthguyfsu | March 7, 2021 at 10:29 pm

I hope that your move is also strategic to avoid the cancel techopoly tactics being employed right now.

JusticeDelivered in reply to healthguyfsu. | March 8, 2021 at 7:43 am

I am sure that handling increased traffic and hardening the service against the cancel culture were both factors in this move.

A faster website is always pleasing. Thanks for the heads up, Professor.

Being able to edit posts would be helpful, but have to agree that using disqus would be undesirable.

OMG, it’s Y2K 2.0

“Some trails are happy ones,
Others are blue.

It’s the way you ride the trail that counts,
Here’s a happy one for you.

Happy trails to you,
Until we meet again.
Happy trails to you,
Keep smiling until then …”

Schwartz’s Law: “Murphy was an optimist.”

Hopefully, LI has taken the steps to preemptively avoid the inevitable deplatforming attempt. I’m sure some book-burning, leftist org has a list and LI is on it.

LI may have some issues with speed, but I switched to my Brave browser without a murmur. Discover – one of the world’s most widely used credit cards – on the other hand does not recognize the Brave browser. Speed is a good deal less of an issue than access is.

Enable your own sponsor / ad stuff. Cut GOOGLE off!

“The new website will retain the look and feel of Legal Insurrection”

Comforting to know we will not be losing our familiar capability to register an irrevocable up or downtick while trying to do something completely different. ?

I actually enjoy the fact that LI readers note the error in the comments.

    It happens.

It’s a quirky feature that makes LI unique.

It’s what makes the LI community as close to civil as the internet gets.

JusticeDelivered in reply to Andy. | March 9, 2021 at 1:04 pm

I make too many errors to note, notice right after posting, in part due to carpel tunnel, in part to recognizing correctly spelled words visually. That is one of my big weaknesses.

Good luck, I hate updates on my tablets

DieJustAsHappy | March 9, 2021 at 5:31 pm

Well, if you want a laugh at my expense:

This morning I logged on and thought the sight seemed faster. And, I admired how much it appeared to be unchanged. I looked at some articles and wondered why there was not mention of the “new” site. Later in the day, I checked again and still no mention of the big change.

I thought it admirable such a change could be made with no glitches and yet y’all were so modest about it.

I guess the joke is on me …

    Good attitude. Such a blessing.

    Some day you’ll DieJustAsHappy.

DieJustAsHappy in reply to Snail. | March 9, 2021 at 6:49 pm

Thank you. On a different day, it might not have been so good as my frustration level would be through the roof. So, I do find it a blessing today wasn’t one of them.

“DieJustAsHappy” is taken from part of an expression I heard my grandfather utter. The full on is “I’ll leave just as long and die just as happy.”

Best of luck.

Any chance we can get a post on the Florida Attorney General’s suit against Biden et al for violating the Administrative Procedure Act for adopting rules that suspend enforcement of immigration law?

Would love a link to the suit, if anyone has it!
