CA Student Says Teacher Threatened to Remove Him From Virtual Class Over Trump Flag on His Wall
“You can sit up, remove the flag, or reposition your camera within the next 15 seconds or I’m kicking you out of class”
A high school student in California claims he was recently told by a teacher to remove or cover the Trump flag in his bedroom during an online class.
She gave him 15 seconds to comply and even counted out loud, but after a few seconds, the student signed himself out of the class.
Can anyone even imagine such a thing happening back in 2008 or 2012 if the student had an Obama sign on his wall?

A student at Colusa High School in Colusa, California was threatened to be kicked out of a virtual “classroom” for having a Trump 2020 flag on his bedroom wall. The student’s chemistry teacher gave him an ultimatum: move his camera or take down the flag. He had 15 seconds to make a decision before he would be kicked out of class. He waved goodbye and hung up the video call.
“Since school has begun, my son has had this flag, Trump flag hanging in his background,” Tiffany, the boy’s parent, told CBS 13.
According to the parent, it’s not the teacher’s fault for having no guidance on how to handle things like this during virtual learning. It’s why Tiffany and other parents asked the school board to clarify the code of conduct for virtual learning.
The school’s code of conduct and dress code prevents students from wearing clothing that promotes alcohol, tobacco, or drug symbols, sexual messages, messages that are obscene or profane and those that degrade any race. There isn’t anything in the 38 page document talking about politics, elections or political campaigns.

Tiffany says her son’s high school chemistry teacher did not approve of the political statement and asked him in the middle of class to get rid of it.
“You can sit up, remove the flag, or reposition your camera within the next 15 seconds or I’m kicking you out of class,” the teacher said during their virtual class.
Tiffany says the teacher then began to count and did not make it to 10 before Tiffany’s son waved goodbye and exited the virtual classroom.
She doesn’t blame the teacher for the uncomfortable moment that’s made its way to social media.
“She is a new teacher and it’s a mistake. There hasn’t been any guidance given to her as a teacher for the school,” Tiffany said.

The mother of the student deserves credit for the way she handled this. Not everyone would be so understanding.
This type of political bias always seems to go in only one direction.

It is 100% the teacher’s fault.
But she is not alone in being 100% at fault.
It is, in fact, the responsibility of the teacher to both know and comply with the policies of her employer. In any event, I challenge the notion that a school has any right or obligations, whatsoever, to dictate what is in the home of a student in order to receive an education. If a school system wants to reach into a private residence, they get whatever comes out. If they do not like it and want to control the environment, they can go back into the classroom.
So you can wear a Mexican flag ( that has happened in Liberalfonia) but not a Trump flag. Live to see a civil right attorney’s (Leo Terrell for example) opinion here.

What sort of guidance would be appropriate? Special guidance seem superfluous to me. A “teacher” should already know the basic stuff—don’t run with scissors, don’t moon a werewolf, don’t get involved in a land war in Asia, don’t be a bigot, etc.
Yep, what kind of “guidance” does she need to understand that the kid has a right to express his own political opinions in his own home in his own bedroom, and it’s not up to a chemistry teacher to decide if those opinions are acceptable.
I always wonder what in the world is going through these teachers’ heads. I see the house/bedroom of 8 of my chemistry students every day. There are some things I am mandated by the state to report, but I haven’t seen any of those things. This is like that young boy that got in trouble because he had a BB gun. Why do schools think it is their business?
I don’t know how some teachers are finding time to be busybodies. I am having to do, by far, the most work I’ve ever done in this profession and I can’t stay caught up. The idea of giving myself another headache and pointlessly disrupting my class is insane. Why would anybody do that?
You know what kind of guidance this teacher needs? It’s called being an American, not a bolshevik.
Put an ANTIFA flag over it and see what the commie teacher’s reaction is.

Yea, you live in an ideal world. Let’s home school everyone. Face it, we live in a mix conservative and liberal world. I can’t complain, my kids and I benefit from the public school system. How about we make sure they do their job instead of allowing them to take over the parenting job.
Sex Ed in school? 1619? Back to the basics. Sports and trade school training.
Home schooling is great for some but not all. If you eliminate the Teacher Unions, you have solve 80% of the problems with schools. The other 20% is disciplinary issues. Also, school board members are way over paid.
Exposure to different views is good. Indoctrination is bad.

On my own part, I’ve heard of several of these incidents, and all of them involved Trump supporters. Unfortunately, two interpretations are possible:
1. Trump supporters, exclusively, are intent on being provocative dicks; or
2. There are a lot of similar leftist signs at virtual school going unremarked and unchallenged.
Unfortunately, I don’t go to virtual school, so I have no way to determine this for myself, and reporters have so far been entirely unhelpful in documenting which of these is the true case.
Even if they are being provocative dicks, it’s their right to freedom of expression. That is their resident, not the teachers and it’s not school property.
While you may have the 100% legal right to be a dick, it’s not a nice thing to be. Scale this sort of behavior up, and what you end up with is mobs of leftists invading restaurants and demanding that people take loyalty oaths to Marxism while shoving cameras in their faces.
I respectfully disagree. Mobs of leftists harassing diners and threatening them is qualitatively different from having a Trump poster on your wall at home or, for that matter, many Trump posters on all one’s walls. The latter would be a quantitative “scale up.”

Respectfully no. The passive display of the content of a private residence is not under the authority of a school to regulate. Even if the display was ‘obscene’ the school would be hard pressed to make it stick.
As an example, Military stores are forbidden by statute from selling ‘obscene’ material. Those same stores sold Playboy, Hustler etc. Ergo those magazines are not obscene.
Now if the school board had provided recommendations for a back screen and also provided funds for a covering then perhaps they could have a chance at enforcement. They didn’t. Nor did they offer to cut the parents a check to find private or parochial school alternatives.
Insisting upon being afforded the ability to exercise ones rights is not controversial, IMO.
Upon further thinking about this issue, especially in light of the black armbands case, I have concluded that hanging a political flag on the wall of your own room in camera view is not qualitatively different from wearing the same design on a t-shirt in a classroom.
The mother and son clearly have different viewpoints and the mother not supporting her sons freedom of speech is disconcerting

This whole “virtual school” thing is going to implode on everyone involved. Now that they are able to see what the teachers used to do in private (like remove references to the Bad Orange Man), and used to teach their children in private (All Lives Matter and MAGA are racist), parents are reacting.
The teachers, their unions and the government school boards don’t like it one bit…and there’s not a thing they can do about it. They’ve painted themselves into a corner over the China Flu.

Teacher should have learned about that case while taking educational courses.

Our son’s 4th grade teacher had a life-sized cardboard Obama in the classroom.
The kid should keep his camera off. A school can’t mandate they have their camera on because that is an invasion of privacy: state employees forcing their way into your home. It’s not as of the student has a choice over distancing learning
Student should have stayed there staring at the camera while she continued to count. And hopefully the next day and the next week, even more students would have a Trump flag.
If you find that supporting our country and our President to be somehow objectionable or profane, maybe you should not be a teacher in a Free country!!
