As First Presidential Debate Nears, Democrats Are Concerned About Biden

The first presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump is happening on Tuesday night. Democrats are playing it cool, but there is real concern about how Biden will perform.

In a format like this, Biden is on his own. There is no campaign handler who can suddenly step in and shut down the event by saying “OK, thanks so much everyone.”

Sean Sullivan and Josh Dawsey of the Washington Post wrote this rather revealing story:

Trump readies a debate onslaught — and Biden allies worry

President Trump is gearing up to launch blistering personal attacks on Joe Biden and his family in the first presidential debate on Tuesday, while Biden is bracing for an onslaught and worried allies are warning the Democratic nominee not to lose his temper and lash out, according to people with knowledge of the strategies in both camps.

Trump has told associates he wants to talk specifically about his opponent’s son Hunter Biden and mused that the debates are when “people will finally realize Biden is just not there,” according to one adviser. The president is so eager to lay into his rival that he has called aides to test out various attacks, focusing on attacks that cast Biden as a longtime Washington insider with a limited record of accomplishment, said another adviser, who like many interviewed for this story spoke on the condition of anonymity to candidly describe private talks.

Biden and his advisers are anticipating a venomous barrage, according to a person with knowledge of their thinking, and they are preparing to counter with an affirmative case for a Biden presidency. The Democrat wants to stay focused on how he would address the coronavirus pandemic and the country’s economic problems, which he blames Trump for worsening.

The prospect of a cage match between a president for whom no subject is off-limits and a challenger who can be openly emotional is making some Biden advisers nervous. They see a fine line between Biden’s passion and empathy, which can appeal to voters, and the raw anger that sometimes gets him in trouble and could undercut his pitch as a calming alternative to a president who thrives on chaos.

Two quick reactions. First of all, Joe Biden is “a longtime Washington insider with a limited record of accomplishment.” Second, why shouldn’t Trump go after Biden’s family? Hasn’t Trump’s family been fair game for Democrats and the media over the last four years?

In another sign of the left’s utter panic, Nancy Pelosi is doubling down on her suggestion that Biden shouldn’t even bother debating Trump. Funny, she didn’t feel that way about Obama in 2008 or 2012. What changed?

Megan Henney reports at FOX News:

Pelosi doubles down that Biden shouldn’t debate Trump: ‘Why bother?’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday doubled down on her argument that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden should not debate President Trump, claiming the Republican incumbent and his “henchmen” have no “fidelity” to facts or the truth.

Asked during an interview on “Morning on CBS” whether she still believed the former vice president should skip the three scheduled debates, Pelosi said: “Oh, I do. Not that I don’t think he’ll be excellent. I just think that the president has no fidelity to fact or truth and, actually in his comments the last few days, no fidelity to the Constitution of the United States.”

She continued: “He and his henchmen are a danger, with their comments, are a danger to our democracy. So I don’t want to give him – I mean, why bother? He doesn’t tell the truth.”

They have every reason to be concerned. Here are a few of Biden’s greatest hits:

The ratings for Tuesday night should be outstanding, so there’s that.

I am hoping to watch it all though not on my normal schedule.
It will be a train wreck I can’t miss

If Gropey Joe simply avoids any major gaffes it will be reported that he REKKED Trump.

DJT needs to get off the script written straight away, bombard Sundowner Joe with questions as soon as he finishes his answer with the debate with Wallace.

POTUS Awesome Donald J. Trump excels at many things.
Trolling and provocation are very high on the list.
I want him to reduce Joe Biden to tears and obvious incontinence.

He’s the best the DNC has to offer. Any wonder why the DNC is dying?

So no one is worried that Joe will suddenly wander off talking points and spout complete gibberish? Or that he’ll forget what he’s running for, or what planet he’s on, or his own name?

Have they even been paying attention? (Answer: Yes they have, which is why the stuff they said they ARE worried about sounds so fake)

I won’t be surprised if Gropin Joe rips off his jacket and tries to take a swing at Trump

I wonder if the Secret Service has a contingency plan for that

I expect Biden to make up an excuse for cancelling. Trump isn’t Romney. Chris Wallace won’t be able cow Trump like Candy Crowley cowed Romney.

If he shows, I expect Chris Wallace to do everything he can to protect Biden but Trump isn’t Romney. Chris Wallace won’t be able cow Trump like Candy Crowley cowed Romney. I would love to see Trump defiantly take on Wallace, chew him up and spit him out.

Democrats are worried? I am worried that Creepy Slow Joe will get flustered, staying up way past his bed-time, overcompensate and try to be a tough guy, pop a gasket, and drop dead right on stage. Or his dentures might fall out again…..

I expect something to happen in the debate. I don’t know what, but something in keeping with 2020. Something showing that God has a sense of humor and a sense of irony.

AS for strategy, I would not come out of the gate with Hun ter or anything heavy. Body blow. Things like calling him the “Senator from MBNA”. Remind people how he championed bankrupcy laws. When aBiden claims he’s done something, suggest that he’s also going to claim to have cured smallpox. When he says, “listen to the experts”, ask him to name the experts. Maybe throw in a “come on man”. Or at least have a response to it. Like Mondale had a respone to “there you go again”.

Then after he has him riled up hit him with the heavy stuff.

I’m putting my money on Biden not keeping track (or remembering) where he is, falling off the stage, and ending up in a comatose condition. And nobody actually notices a change in his campaign strategy.

I was kinda at the ring — program in hand, trying to have my own enthusiasm be heard above the almost continuous roar and shouts, as you proceeded through the rounds, recording body hit after body hit.

I sure like the plan. Would also thoroughly relish a good knockout blow in the 8th or 10th.

AS for Pelosi, I think she really doesn’t carte. She said that more to preserve her leadership role if things go south. “See I told you so.”

I’d Rather Have Covid 19 Than Biden 20.

I see one, or more, of several things happening:

1) Biden ends up refusing to debate and gives some lame excuse.

2) The debate goes on the air, and when Biden stumbles badly, there will be a technical issue that results in the feed cutting off.

3) Trump will not attack hard; he will remain calm, and be fair. Biden will get progressively loonier, become combative and loud as stress triggers whatever is breaking down in his mind. He will melt down, live.

If the broadcast ended at that point, I would see it as an act of decency and kindness, not censorship.

    I’m going with door #3

I’m going with Door #3 as well, but it depends on what drugs Biden’s getting that will keep him stable and calm. He’s probably already on them. That’s the only way that he’ll appear lucid. I think Trump will definitely be respectful and calm because it’s in his best interest to do so, but at some point, whether this debate or the next two (if there are two more), Biden will falter and in such a way that no amount of spinning by the MSM will be able to save him. BTW, as a postscript, a friend of 20+ years, yet a die-hard Democrat, told me that she doesn’t believe Biden has dementia, completely forgetting that my mother had it, so I know the signs.

That is why they keep “putting a lid” on him coming out of the basement. They are working on getting the dosages right to make it through 90 minutes.

Namenda 10 mg twice a day and methylphenidate 5 mg twice a day.

Maybe a little weed, too, about an hour or so prior to “lights,” just to smoothen the rough edges and keep him smiling.

Trump has been such a consistent brawler/slugger, Biden may be preparing for just that … so if Trump backs off, Biden will knock himself out by stumbling into Trump.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to MrE. | September 26, 2020 at 3:08 pm

That brings to mind an image I have in my mind a lot these days.

The police show up at 4AM, armored, battering ram at the ready to serve a no-knock warrant. Just as the battering ram is thrown toward the door, the door opens very fast and the man with the battering ram tumbles head over heels into the room.

Trump just remains calm, while Joe winds up to batter is way through…

If that happens, I look forward to a Wednesday surge of folks at the early voting polling site I’m working. Likely they will mostly be Trump voters.

On Monday Joe will take a Covid test, one that he’s developing, you know, the one with immediate results. He’ll be positive and be quarantined to his basement. No debates. No one sees him again until the day before the election. He’s the epitome of health and sharp as a tack.

If Romney won his election we wouldn’t have a Trump. So thank you mittens. Mittens may have saved America by not winning his election.

What’s to worry about? I’m sure he’ll do great.

Hunter became fair game when Joe committed federal crimes to protect him from the bad business he was and is perpetuating overseas.

I’ll be reading “Battle Ground”.

The D’rats could salvage a traditional, live-on-stage show by using classical debating techniques, like pulling the fire alarm when Joe gets in trouble. But how they’ll arrange a similar escape plan for this current Covid-approved show, I couldn’t guess.

Personally, I wouldn’t watch this, any more than I’d watch a stage show featuring a guy stomping on a box full of iguanas. Just plain nasty, and a waste of time which could be better spent reading back issues of the Skin and Allergy News.

If Wallace is not tough on both candidates, don’t be surprised if Trump doesn’t attack Biden and Wallace, Trump loves the conflict.

I’ve been involved in politics since the first time I served as an election judge in Chicago of all places. And that was over 40 years ago. I’ve been elected to public office, served in DC in Bush 41 Administration. But this is the first time, I have seen the political atmosphere so unhinged. Pelosi has been on a mission to destroy Trump since the day he was elected, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but she’s worse than Hillary, who started all this divisiveness with her not accepting her election loss.

Trump has got to win so overwhelmingly, think Nixon ’72, that no amount of voter fraud the Dems pull, they won’t overcome his majority of votes. We’re going to be in for the Mother of all election battles.

Bidel will pee himself during the debates. I wonder if the Depends will hold.

“Biden and his advisers…are preparing to counter with an affirmative case for a Biden presidency.”

“The Democrat wants to stay focused on how he would address the coronavirus pandemic and the country’s economic problems, which he blames Trump for worsening.”

That…is not “an affirmative case” argument.

In 2015-16, many commentators said the reason that Donald Trump was winning the Republican primaries was that he came across as more “authentic” than the other candidates. Well, the debates will certainly help reveal the true nature of the candidates. I want to know the nature of the person who is seeking the highest office in the land, and I will not vote based upon “character flaws” or verbal flubs. I accept that every human is imperfect. Most voters are too intelligent to get tripped up on something like that.

If the d party apparatus was actually concerned about the ability of their nominee to withstand questions, scrutiny and Trump’s aggressive debate tactics they could have chosen one of the other two dozen candidates.

Instead they chose a 77 year old Biden who has clearly lost a step mentally and physically. Choices have consequences.

Trump should ask Biden to state his actual plan to deal with the WuFlu, had he been in the hot seat in Jan 2020. Actual steps to take and in which order. Name some of those who would make up his “Panel of scientists”, and how they would differ from the CDC, NIH.

Then move off into Middle East discord, and how he would have done better. Why the accords involving Israel, UAE and Bahrain were wrong or done poorly, or how they might disrupt the “peace” in the region.

And then there is the USA’s energy independence where we became an oil exporter rather than an importer. I think Joe can be easily overloaded mentally on this kind of things. The “what would Joe have done different…?” approach could be gold.

Oh! Yes! And DJT needs to ask Joe to tell us his short list of judicial all-stars he will draw from to fill SCOTUS vacancies. Trump told of his plan early on in the campaign and stuck to it, right up until today… Biden needs to be equally honest with the voters.

a fine line between Biden’s passion and empathy

Oh he just oozes empathy, all right. And I say that as a lying dog-faced pony soldier.

If Biden asks, “Do I look like a Socialist?” Trump should immediately answer, “Yes.”

Conservative Beaner | September 26, 2020 at 3:32 pm

Trump should remain calm and treat Biden as if he has all of his facilities. Let the facts speak for themselves and if Wallace tries to interject in behalf of Biden then Trump should cut Chris off.

notamemberofanyorganizedpolicital in reply to Conservative Beaner. | September 26, 2020 at 3:55 pm

I’m sure that is what Good President Trump will do.

Remember how gently he handled Hillary in the debates – except where he had to point out the truth in answering her.

Sen Johnson on Hunter Biden report:

I think we’ve caught Biden in a lie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgvbZ_8Ip-Q

I think Trump’s closing remarks should echo his tribute to RBG…

A theory on Joe’s non-cognizant vs cognizant times and Dementia. Prevalent with having Dementia is the symptoms of confusion and agitation described as “Sundowning” as it shows itself in the later part of the day, where speech and clear thoughts cannot be made. What caught my interest was the reasonable explanation of why Biden has only had 9 days out in public followed by the many more days that he has been made unavailable after 9 AM. The reasonable explanation is that in the course of the previous 9 weeks with help of medication, his Dr. is recalibrating his bodies 24 hour cycle so “Nights are Mornings; Mornings are Nights” in order to have him ready for the our evening/Biden’s Morning debates. Also posted were pics where it appears he has had an intravenous feed placed on the top of his hand for repetitive medication used.

The dudes a fraud. Always has been. He’s never been the way he presents himself. To bidet political office is just an ATM. He’s a con-artust and a flim-flam man all rolled into one. Plus he’s raised his children to be the same way. Of course most of them are dead but hunter hasn’t OD himself on the crack or fentanyl yet. Give him time. He’s not likely to make it to 50. Few drug addicts do. None do when you give them unlimited cash to buy dope. So his days are numbered. He probably won’t make it to old Joe’s funeral. But fingers will be putting hunter into a pine box before long. Although he probably won’t know it. Pitiful family. A disgrace to America. So.ebody ought to do something. The guys a chinese communist sellout from end to end. A national security threat without doubt. But so was omama. And clinton. Not to mention both rinos bush 41 and 43. President Trump is truly a Godsend.

A “venomous barrage.” Not as if Biden EVER did that to Paul Ryan in the VP debate in 2012. It’s only Trump, that big meanie!
