Democrats About-Face, Are Suddenly in Favor of Reopening Schools

Maybe the Democrats should phone their teacher union allies and let them know that refusing to educate students while making political demands is not scoring them any political points.

Well, well, well.

Finally, after months of criticizing Trump for the same suggestion, Democrats have come round and endorsed the CDC’s recommendation that schools should reopen.

This would be hilarious if they weren’t so horrendously shameless.

There’s only one explanation for the gaslighting — advocating for endless shutdowns and school closures is killing them politically and is going to tank funding to some of their most loyal donors and supporters — unions.

Yes, just like Trump suggested.

You know this is coming:

And this too. This is the route we’ve decided is best for our family for the foreseeable future:

I wish a small state would just ban K-12 public education. Repeal the property taxes and other sources of financing. Then make landlords rebate the property taxes embedded in rents to renters.

That will put the money back in parents pockets and they can decide how and where to enroll their kids.

They’d have to figure out a way to get the super rich to partially subsidize the children of the very poor. And then there’s the moral question of whether childless couples and singles should help pay to educate children.

It’s probably too radical. But it just seems that with urban schools failing to property educate kids, and now this push by public teachers to make demands unrelated to public safety, people need to be re-thinking the current system.

” Then make landlords rebate the property taxes embedded in rents to renters.”

No need for this, you just made home ownership more affordable so let the market work.

“They’d have to figure out a way to get the super rich to partially subsidize the children of the very poor. And then there’s the moral question of whether childless couples and singles should help pay to educate children.”

We do this every year without children and also don’t get the tax deduction. It’s a bit ludicrous but not the hill I want to die on. Besides, taxpayers’ children are good for the economy, so incentivizing child birth and rearing is a win for us IMO.

“It’s probably too radical. But it just seems that with urban schools failing to property educate kids, and now this push by public teachers to make demands unrelated to public safety, people need to be re-thinking the current system.”

I think administrators are the bigger problem, but political indoctrination should be safeguarded against in our education system.

dems don’t think the schools are screwing up, they keep churning out good little mindless robots who will vote blue.
Meanwhile they send their kids to top flight private schools and steal everything not nailed down.

I’d love this, except for the run it will create on independent, secular schools that just don’t exist now because “free” public schooling has until now poisoned the market for them.

” Then make landlords rebate the property taxes embedded in rents to renters.”

” They’d have to figure out a way to get the super rich to partially subsidize the children of the very poor. ”

    Bernie Sanders would be proud.

All of their rich donors threatened to put a chastity belt on the old wallet and told the Dems that if they don’t get their bratty kids out of the house and back boarding school, they aren’t going to be very charitable.

Another public union, faced with extinction because people exercised their freedom to choose. The teacher union exposed themselves as the selfish leftists that they are.

Teachers Union: We want a safe working environment before our teachers return.

CNN “fact checking” now attempting to predict the future in order to make Trump look bad.

America was built by settlers, in the beginning their children had little social interaction outside the family. I see claims that children are psychologically damaged by not being in school, I am not at all sure that that is the case.

Bullying in school is rampant, especially for those who march to a different drummer. At least half the time children are in school, they are not being taught anything. Even worse, is they are often taught BS.

I would like to see both parents involved in teaching their children, controlling how, when and what their learn. I do not think that middle school children should be introduced concepts like being trans, when they are so confused about puberty and what is happening to them. If an adult decides to identify as such, fine. But children should not be confused about such.

And now I read about white children being taught by or on behalf of black racists that they are innately racist. There was a time when I passively accepted things like Affirmative Action, that time is past.

I think that all people should have opportunity to work hard to lean and to work towards success. It is all about work, yet today we lazy, often stupid people, demanding all the trappings, but not doing a lick of the hard work to get there.

I am fed up.

Montgomery County, MD (DC suburb) has public school kids doing virtual learning through the end of 2020. They tried to do a no in-school instruction ban for all nonpublic schools at least through September, so private schools that wanted to open or to do a hybrid method of virtual and in-classroom instruction (such as the Catholic schools) would have been forced to do entirely virtual learning.

The Hogan Administration intervened on behalf of the nonpublic schools and after a few days of stubbornness MoCo rescinded the ban.

I wonder if the Democrats have switched course because they realize that Trump will take on the Teacher’s Union and absolutely devastate its grip on public education – and the money it brings to the table for the DNC. They can’t afford to keep losing big donors. Trump is just brash enough to strap it on.

No, it’s numbers. The teacher’s unions have contributed as much as they’re going to this election cycle, so there’s no money to be made by sucking up to them. There are twenty times as many voters with students they want to see back in school as there are teachers who want to stay at home and phone it in. Win 20:1 one direction, lose 20:1 the other. Dems *can* do match.

I was talking to her the other day- my Mennonite neighbor with 12 children want schools to open. They go to the local Amish/Mennonite school- and the opening of those are determined by Dictator Cuomo’s edicts. I have no kids in K-12- and I think schools should open. And the idiots saying grade schoolers have to wear masks all day have obviously never had children or been around the.

They leave out: testing, tracing, treatment.

LOL.

Testing: Testing is still pretty pitiful – the etests, themselves. The accuracy is so poor that it’s better, in most cases, not to test and get false information about ones condition.

Tracing: Dems love this because they are dying to tag every American and follow us around and interrogate us about our every move and thought. Anyone who advocates “tracing” ought to be locked up because they are clear threats to a free people. And they’re retarded, too.

Treatment: LOL. There is no treatment. The only possible treatments for the Wuhan virus are Hydroxychloroquine (which the dems would rather shoot people in the head than let them even think of taking HCQ) and smoking cigarettes (that the Dems have spent the last three decades painting as the most evil of evils ever unleashed on the Earth with no benefits of any sort, whatsoever, that serves no purpose other than to fill government coffers through the most exhorbitant, insane taxes they can possibly attach to them (and then they don’t let you smoke your cigarettes anywhere).

Those are the only treatments (and prophylactics) for the Wuhan virus. Other than that, they just recommend that you never come into contact with anyone, wash every itenm you might look at from less than 6 feet away, never gather with more than a handful of people in a space smaller than a football stadium … and then, when you catch the Wuhan virus, anyway, all the doctors do is stare at you until you become just ripe enough for them to put you on a ventilator and start billing for it along with looking to stuff you full of Remdesivir. That’s the only “treatment” they have … which few would actually call “treatment”.

And I would just add that Chuck Schumer is the most insincere joke of a speaker I have seen. his gestures and intonations are so contrived that even his mother doesn’t believe anything he says.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | August 7, 2020 at 9:20 pm

Chuckles is aware that schools are state/local issues, right …

This reminds me of dems who tried to get around the few affirmative action cases they lost by reshaping laws and procedures in order to have disparate impact on the people they wanted – stuff to affect blacks without saying the word “black” anywhere in the law or procedure – and then they turn around and decide that any law that has disparate impact (unlike their intentional such laws devised for only that purpose) is “racist”, no matter the intent or reason for the disparate impact. The same people who fashioned laws with disparate impact try and discredit other laws for saying that any disparate impact (unintentional or for whatever reason) is illegal. LOL. That’s what you call “chutzpah”! And one of the big supporters of such idiocy sits on the SCOTUS bench … the Empathetic, Wise Latina …

And now they’re trying to pull the same stuff with schools, which they and they leftist shock troops have fought tooth and nail every day … But they figure, “Why not, we got away with the rest of the insane stuff we’ve done!”

The Friendly Grizzly | August 7, 2020 at 9:40 pm

Home schooling, and good on-line schooling is catching on more than ever. Not to mention “block” schools where this mom teaches this, that mom teaches the other, the stay-at-home dad teaches the other, and the one with the mini-van takes the kids to museums and on field trips.

The unions and the PhDs in Education are losing control of what the kids are taought, and they are screaming blue murder.

This is how it works and often very well. The quality of shared parental education gives the children much practical experience as well as hte “book learning.”

The Bride’s great nieces and nephew who were/are home schooled this way were quite capable of carrying their side of an adult level conversation as pre-teens. Discussing politics and civics with a twelve year old girl who quotes the Constitution is an experience I found very enjoyable. And challenging.

Not saying that this is true of all teachers (my teacher sister was a high school valedictorian) but there is a reason why the education majors are usually the dumbest students in any college or university.

If you want to have children and not know who the father is, your choice, but I shouldn’t have to pay for it. You have children out of wedlock then don’t count on us, who play by the rules, to pay for your choice of a bad lifestyle. As for us without children, that was our choice so why do we still have to pay? If you want two homes and 3 cars then you better have a way to support that life-choice and don’t take my money. We don’t want kids, so we didn’t have any. We put that money into savings for retirement and use some of it to give to wounded warriors or something like that…that would be OUR choice with OUR money.

If virtual education works, you can fire 95% of the teachers and just show videos. If you do that, the $ flow to the dems slows to a trickle. The realization that that could happen brings Chuck to the podium demanding that the coffers schools be re-opened.

If we tax hair plugs and botox, congress alone could fund education

Teacher unions would be useless. School systems would be shuttered. Alternative learning sources would have to be funded bypassing both. And….the mega-billion dollar Department of Education would lose all of its power of the purse.

Yes there would be the quick high from the Covid money but that would go away leaving a hangover that never ends.

That can all go straight to hell. Who needs this shit?

I have read endless comments about teacher’s unions and how they have screwed up education. In right to work states where there are no unions the test scores are even worse than union states. Maybe parents should also accept some degree of responsibility for their children’s education and not dump everything on the public schools. Covid or no Covid the anger towards teachers isn’t always justified. My children went through the public schools and they are doing just fine. It always takes involved parents to educate their children.

DEfan in reply to sexyfatjew. | August 8, 2020 at 11:11 pm

True, just like good cops and bad cops. Money isn’t the answer but involved parents really help and if they have to pay themselves for their child’s education, they have a much better chance to get involved; when it is “free” money (tax dollars) then they don’t care as much. Look how a child treats a parent’s home, car, you name it but when they live on there own, they don’t beat stuff up as much. (well, in most cases…some kids just never grow up). I wonder why it is ok to de-fund the police but not the teachers then? With more children home all the time small towns will need more police on duty and longer hours and that costs too. So no school, move some of that money over to the police then.

Teachers are as trapped in the government monopoly bureaucratic public school system as the students. After a while, some of them end up as lifers who gave up caring.

The other problem, as you point out, is parents pursuing their own desires at the expense of their children. Tempered hedonism is the secular religion of the public schools which “educated” todays parents.
