Woman Who Called Police on Black Man in Central Park Faces Misdemeanor

Cooper already lost her job.

https://twitter.com/CBSEveningNews/status/1265417827697246218?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1265417827697246218%7Ctwgr%5E&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2020%2F07%2F06%2Famy-cooper-charged-misdemeanor-false-charges-christian-cooper-central-park%2F

Amy Cooper went viral on Memorial Day after bird watcher Christian Cooper filmed her freaking out on him because he caught her with her dog unleashed. She called the police and told them an African-American male was threatening her and her dog.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance announced his office “initiated a prosecution of Amy Cooper for falsely reporting an incident in the third degree.”

Cooper faces up to a year in jail if convicted.

From The New York Times:

Mr. Cooper asked Ms. Cooper, who is not related to him, to leash her dog, he said. When she refused, he said, he tried to lure the dog with treats in hopes of compelling her to restrain her pet.

The encounter turned ugly when Ms. Cooper told Mr. Cooper that she was calling the police and planned to tell them that an African-American man was threatening her life.

Mr. Cooper, who recorded the interaction on his phone, captured what happened next.

“I’m in the Ramble, there is a man, African-American, he has a bicycle helmet and he is recording me and threatening me and my dog,” Ms. Cooper, gripping her dog’s collar tightly, says in a hysterical tone to the 911 operator.

Then, before hanging up, she adds, “I am being threatened by a man in the Ramble, please send the cops immediately!”

The NYT added this portion a few paragraphs below that portion, which includes a significant detail:

She added that when Mr. Cooper remarked that she would not like what he was “going to do next” and then offered her dog treats, she assumed he was threatening her. Mr. Cooper said the remark was merely meant to signal that he planned to offer the treats.

The online mob piled on Cooper.

Cooper gave up her dog back to the rescue group, but she eventually got him back. She worked as head of insurance portfolio management at Franklin Templeton, but lost her job.

There are so many levels of bad on this. Namely her actions (I wouldn’t be surprised if she was a woke SJW attending BLM ‘demonstrations’) and two that police work is being done on this case while the city burns.

I will say I’m glad the guy is going to get some justice.

It’s pretty obvious that this women was a victim of a crime that was committed by black men. She was irrationally in fear of her life because of what happened to her or someone dear to her in the past. I have sympathy for her.

CommoChief in reply to ConradCA. | July 7, 2020 at 10:51 pm

      Conrad,

So the guy who wanted to peacefully bird watch is at fault because he reminded her of her legal obligation to leash and restrain her dog? No way.

Your hypothesis is that she may have previously fallen victim to a black man in some way and therefore she gets a pass on making false police reports? Any objective observer of this encounter can plainly see she is:
      1. Making a choice to disregard the leash law
      2. Attempting to create an exemption because her dog doesn’t need a leash in her opinion
      3. Refused the politely phrased request to leash her dog
      4. Changed her demeanor on the phone with 911 from confident Karen to crying, weeping faux scared Karen
      5. Made extra sure to inject race into the event, ‘there’s a black man’

Her behavior is the archetype of self important, rules are for the little people, Karen culture. She made this entire event possible by her refusal to obey the law.

She made this bed. Now she has to lay in it.

Cy Vance Jr should be spending his limited resources tracking down rioters, looters and arsonists.

Chuckin Houston in reply to dystopia. | July 6, 2020 at 8:32 pm

Cy Vance Jr now has a lot more time to pursue such ‘crimes’ than he had a few years back when he was doing favors for Jeffrey Epstein.

JOHN B in reply to dystopia. | July 7, 2020 at 10:26 pm

Vance couldn’t be bothered with rapists like Weinstein and Epstein, so he certainly won’t go after looters and rioter.

Much easier to join the mob and pick on a defenseless woman.

Where are the women’s groups by the way?

What are the odds that they’re both named ‘Cooper’? The world is weirder than we expect.

    tom_swift in reply to georgfelis. | July 6, 2020 at 8:16 pm

    Well, a sentence like

The online mob piled on Cooper

doesn’t make a whole hell of a lot of sense in a report of this story.

Sally MJ in reply to georgfelis. | July 7, 2020 at 3:00 am

What if they are distantly related?

Tom Servo in reply to Sally MJ. | July 7, 2020 at 9:16 am

I still remember a line Billy Carter (brother of Jimmy) said to a news reporter when he met a black Pastor named Carter, at one of Jimmy’s political get-together’s. Well, like so much of our history, I’m sure all official records of that have been completely erased by now.

healthguyfsu | July 6, 2020 at 7:39 pm

Good thing they caught angry Karen while all of the real crimes go unpunished.

healthguyfsu | July 6, 2020 at 7:40 pm

Also, I don’t think he is as innocent as he claims. When he tries to lure the dog away and says “she isn’t going to like what he does next”…that’s not exactly normal behavior.

Has he contested this account of the encounter?

    tom_swift in reply to healthguyfsu. | July 6, 2020 at 8:18 pm

Yes, that’s a threat. A threat of exactly what is a matter of conjecture.

This whole story is so New York—two obnoxious jerks doing what New Yorkers do best.

      healthguyfsu in reply to tom_swift. | July 7, 2020 at 12:29 am

I read an interview he did with some other site where he explained that he did it and why. IMO she should have the charges dropped and should sue her employer. Her only crime is a fine for a leash law violation.

This guy baited her into getting upset because he implied a threat on her dog and possibly her. He should be cancelled but he’s too protected for his “calm demeanor” by the woke mob.

Tom Servo in reply to healthguyfsu. | July 7, 2020 at 9:20 am

You’re right, he baited her. He played the game of walking right up to the edge of what was legal, but never going across it, very well. He knew what he was doing, and she very stupidly fell for it. When she called the police, and then she freaked out while he was calm and collected, she was sunk.

    jr.ewing.78 in reply to healthguyfsu. | July 7, 2020 at 9:01 am

Isn’t the whole thing on video, including the “you won’t like what I do” part?

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to healthguyfsu. | July 7, 2020 at 9:43 am

And if anyone had said that to me and tried to feed my dog “treats” they’d have more to worry about than me calling the police. I’d have kicked his ass from one end of the park to the other. And I wouldn’t care if he’s black or not. And that’s the truth.

Fascism is a very scary thing. Imagine losing your means of support, and now your freedom for free speech?

We should boycott the employer who fired her. (Does anyone know it?) Hopefully she sues their asses off.

    “She’s from Canada”

In the manner that Basil, Sybil, and Polly would reflexively excuse Manual’s errant behavior by saying, “He’s from Barcelona,”

we can say the same of this lefty goody-2-shoes (but goody only for lefty “values”).

Numerous stories report that she’s from Canada, not yet a citizen but that hasn’t prevented her from donating to lefty Democrats (is there any other kind?), and that she used to work as a paper shuffler for Franklin Templeton.

    CommoChief in reply to TheFineReport.com. | July 7, 2020 at 11:08 pm

On the other hand she could have chosen to obey the law in the first place….then there is no polite conversation asking her to obey the law….a conversation ending with her fake tears as she breathlessly tells 911 that ‘a black man’ is issuing threats to her…he didn’t threaten her…

Let’s view this for what it is, not try and find a racial component. Karen didn’t follow the law. Karen got that pointed out. Karen was unsuccessful in arguing for an exemption. Karen got mad and falsely reported a crime. Karen got fired. Karen got burned online. Now Karen is facing misdemeanor charges.

thad_the_man | July 6, 2020 at 8:11 pm

I’ve been told that enticing a dog away from it’s owner is a felony ion NY. I tried to verify this, but can’t find the appropriate statute.

Perhaps someone else knows?

    JPL17 in reply to thad_the_man. | July 7, 2020 at 12:18 am

All I could find is an Indiana statute that reads as follows:

    619. Enticing Dogs from Owner. It shall be unlawful to entice any licensed dog away from the premises of the person owning, keeping or harboring the same; or to entice any such licensed dog from any street, alley or public place of this city, with the intention of depriving the owner, keeper or person harboring the same, of the possession thereof.

I have no idea if New York state has a similar statute. But even if it does, the statute expressly requires proof that the defendant intended to deprive the dog owner of his or her dog, which is probably lacking here.

Tom Servo in reply to JPL17. | July 7, 2020 at 9:28 am

It is never a crime to give a dog a treat, as long as there is nothing wrong with the treat. This man had hit upon a very clever trick, which he admitted to having done several times. (he’s probably still doing it) He didn’t like people letting their dogs run without a leash in the park he frequented. So, he would carry dog treats in his pocket, then when he saw a dog running loose (which I believe WAS against an ordinance) he would call the dog and give it a treat. (Of course the dog would love it.) Then he would imply that the treat was harmful in some way, which would greatly upset the owner, and he would count on this being enough to make them put their dog on a leash.

The treat was NOT harmful, and the threat was always vague and implied, never direct. These two things kept him on the right side of the law, but still were creepy enough to scare off anyone who ran afoul of him. It was a very clever psychological game he’d worked out, and this foolish woman got caught up by it.

Unfortunately it is not against the law in NYC, or anywhere else, to be a creepy, manipulative person who enjoys playing head games on all the people around them.

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to Tom Servo. | July 7, 2020 at 10:03 am

And if he would have done that to me, calling the police would be the least of his problems. I’d kick his ass from one end of the park to the other. And I wouldn’t care if he’s black or recording the incident. You simply don’t do that kind of shit.

Dantzig93101 | July 6, 2020 at 8:14 pm

This seems to be a new game: find a white person, start video recording, provoke some kind of argument, scream “racist,” and get the person mobbed and fired.

    tom_swift in reply to Dantzig93101. | July 6, 2020 at 8:21 pm

She can be grateful that it wasn’t the old “knockout” game.

      Dantzig93101 in reply to tom_swift. | July 6, 2020 at 8:48 pm

The knockout game is still around. The last victim I read about was some 90-something granny in Brooklyn.

Seriously, and not sarcastically, I can hardly blame entitled mancontents for causing problems. That’s in the job description. The real problem is people in positions of authority who evade their duty to protect the innocent and to maintain public order. Instead of throwing the troublemakers in jail, they support them against the innocent. That needs to change, fast and hard.

    JusticeDelivered in reply to Dantzig93101. | July 6, 2020 at 11:44 pm

Also, to sue and collect the ghetto lottery.

A threat to poison her dog is absolutely a threat against her.

Tom Servo in reply to AlecRawls. | July 7, 2020 at 9:34 am

But he never said that – he was quite clever. He said “you won’t like what happens next” which is an IMPLIED threat but actually means nothing at all. To be a legal threat, the words are required to be direct and clear, and of course he knew that.

anyone who grew up with brothers and sisters close in age to them should remember playing these kinds of stupid games all the time.

Does this mean we’ll now be prosecuting those who make false reports about “nooses” and mean words written on dorm doors?

I thought not

This is the line the Manhattan DA wants to draw? How about prosecuting far more serious false reports, like those for rape?

murkyv in reply to randian. | July 6, 2020 at 9:36 pm

Maybe hit Cuomo for his own False Report today, clearing himself of any blame whatsoever for those nursing home deaths

She added that when Mr. Cooper remarked that she would not like what he was “going to do next” and then offered her dog treats, she assumed he was threatening her. Mr. Cooper said the remark was merely meant to signal that he planned to offer the treats.

How not to approach another human being, and not to earn their trust, and still get them cancelled. Social justice anywhere is injustice everywhere.

Both Coopers are assholes. Why on earth the DA wants to prosecute this, a legitimate complaint in that she was frightened by a threat, while murders, rapes, robbery, and assault rule the NYC day and night is beyond me.

Well, no. The DA is corrupt and needs to prosecute a white woman for being afraid of a black man that threatened her.

Some, select, Black Lives Matter. Diversity (i.e. color judgment), not limited to racism, breeds adversity. The Twilight fringe need to lose their Pro-Choice, selective, opportunistic religion. We need a separation of Progressive Church and State.

ConradCA in reply to Barry. | July 7, 2020 at 8:21 pm

It’s election season and the progressive fascists are pandering to blacks with the goal of gaining their votes. Furthermore, bringing this issues to the news foments fear and hate among blacks. It motivates them to go to the voting booth.

Grand Moff Tarkin | July 7, 2020 at 1:45 am

The wife and I have been watching the 80s show THE EQUALIZER. NYC may soon be back to that level of criminality with the added spice that social justice offences will be harshly punished. Karen shaming will become a new sport.

“Selective prosecution” is almost never a defense, and a “malicious prosecution” case against the government is almost impossible to win, but Vance announced that he ‘will not be prosecuting “low level crimes” as the reason why he will not prosecute an individual who was arrested for defacing a church. Everyone sees through his choices as driven by loony left electoral politics in Manhattan, but maybe a judge might ask him for an explanation in open court, or maybe this woman’s lawyer might get that in edgewise before a jury.

texansamurai | July 7, 2020 at 11:01 am

a good example of the need to carry mace—if the guy really is doing these things as some sort of game, he should be stopped—mace is an effective tool for a woman to deploy—temporarily incapacitates a dumbass like this guy and she can call the police later—am a believer in women carrying mace, etc as a viable means to deal with situations like this, when a firearm would not be needed

would really like to deal with this guy on his own, by himself—believe could teach him another game not so much to his liking

Antifundamentalist | July 7, 2020 at 5:39 pm

I am so sick of entitled people who think leash laws shouldn’t apply to them. I’d throw the book at her for that alone. Years ago, I had some woman with her dogs off leash in a public park tell me to keep my toddlers close to me because her dogs were not child friendly and could get hurt (we were out for a walk and the kids were running around). We told her to leash her dogs, as the clearly posted park rules required. She refused. My husband told her that if they even looked like they were going to approach our children, he would kill them, so it was her choice on whether or not to follow park rules, but she’d been warned. Fortunately, she left, threatening to call the police. We asked her to please do so, we would LOVE to report her behavior.

Let’s keep to first things first. Everything subsequent to her making a conscious choice to disobey the law regarding slashing of her dog flows from her choice.

I highly doubt the bird watching guy picks on white women. Maybe he has developed this response system with the treat, but that response is limited to lawbreakers not the law abiding.

As to size of the dog or ‘screw the law, it’s my dog’. No, that only works until you are confronted with a situation where you wish you had leashed your dog. Maybe that’s a cop who cites you, maybe some psycho poisons your dog, maybe the dog runs off. Maybe something else unforseen.

Maybe someone simply videos your racist over reacting while you call the cops because a black man had a conversation with you about the duty to keep your dog leashed.

Leash laws apply to dogs regardless of size or temperament. Just because your dog is small doesn’t mean that it is exempt.

Sore subject for me. I have mastifs. My dogs are voice trained and compliant to my command. I leash them because it is the law. I use a six foot leash, which is the legal limit in many places. Those cool reel type leashes extend much further than six feet, if you insist on using one do yourself a favor and check what the legal length of the leash is.

Many owners let their little fru fru toy type dogs come directly up to my dog without asking if that is ok. Usually it is ok but it’s nice to be asked, especially when I short leash my dogs when walking along streets. My dogs are just fine until fru fru is nose to nose and barking within two or three feet of me. My dogs don’t like it, I don’t like it.

Bottom line is you are responsible for keeping your dog under restraint. If you are letting your fru fru little dog fully extended a reel type leash to ten feet or more letting him come within two feet of another person with a protective breed trained to respond independently to proximity threats from my blind side or six then your dog may not have a good day.

If there’s a leash law follow it. Watch what your dog is doing. If you fail because you don’t think the law applies or is stupid then you are setting up your dog for failure. All dogs, no matter how well trained, are capable of biting.

Don’t let your loyal companion be destroyed for your failure.
