Sen. Tammy Duckworth on Tearing Down Statues of George Washington: “I think we should listen to the argument there”

Sen. Tammy Duckworth on Tearing Down Statues of George Washington: “I think we should listen to the argument there”

Duckworth is a rising contender for Biden’s VP pick.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) joined CNN Sunday morning where she indicated she was open to tearing down statues of George Washington. Duckworth also criticised Trump’s Mount Rushmore speech saying, “He spent all his time talking about dead traitors.”

Duckworth was asked: “George Washington, I don’t think anybody would call him a ‘traitor’ and there are moves by some to remove statues of him. Is that a good idea?”

To which she responded:

“I think we should listen to everybody. I think we should listen to the argument there. Remember that the president at Mount Rushmore was standing on ground that was stolen from Native Americans who had actually been given that land during a treaty. Let’s talk about the greater context of where we are in our country right now.”

Watch:

Duckworth quickly began to spin, albeit unsuccessfully.

Duckworth is a rising contender for Biden’s VP pick. And she’s totes fine with tearing down statues of George Washington, who is easily one of the the least controversial figures in American history.

From the WaPo:

As Joe Biden pushes ahead with his search for a running mate, Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) has quietly emerged as a serious contender, according to three people with knowledge of the selection process, one of several developing dynamics as the search enters its final weeks.

Duckworth is a Purple Heart recipient and veteran of the Iraq War, the only finalist with military combat experience — and as a woman of Thai and Chinese descent, one of several candidates of color under consideration. While she has a lower profile than some rivals, she is being taken seriously by Biden’s team, according to the people with knowledge of the search, one of whom said she has lately received strong consideration.

Former Senate majority leader Harry M. Reid, who has been in direct contact with the Biden campaign about its search, said in a recent interview there was a “lot of attention” lately on Duckworth, whom he called “a highly decorated woman.”

Reid suggested Duckworth’s qualifications are getting more notice. “You had all the other names there, and it was as if she didn’t exist,” Reid (D-Nev.) said. “And suddenly people began to look at her — this highly decorated woman, member of Congress, senator.”

Two others with knowledge of the search said Duckworth has been attracting notable interest from the campaign, including one who said Duckworth had left a strong impression on at least part of the Biden team. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations.

The Biden campaign declined to comment. A Duckworth spokesman also declined to comment.

Biden’s handlers have largely kept him out of the riotous fray and have specifically avoided any strong language like “traitors.” Duckworth could provide cover for the fringe if she’s selected. But this was a completely unforced error and one that will be a bridge too far, even for some Democrats.

She swore an oath of office. Remember that.

She’s literally deranged, to say nothing of corrupt.

Traitors to what? Certainly not to the US of A, the nation they, you know, founded.

Traitor to the British Crown and the leftist legacy.

he has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating it’s most sacred rights of life & liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating & carrying them into slavery in another hemisphere, or to incur miserable death in their transportation thither. this piratical warfare, the opprobrium of infidel powers, is the warfare of the CHRISTIAN king of Great Britain. determined to keep open a market where MEN should be bought & sold, he has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit or to restrain this execrable commerce: and that this assemblage of horrors might want no fact of distinguished die, he is now exciting those very people to rise in arms among us, and to purchase that liberty of which he has deprived them, & murdering the people upon whom he also obtruded them; thus paying off former crimes committed against the liberties of one people, with crimes which he urges them to commit against the lives of another.

    Let us bray for George.

Duckworth is OBVIOUSLY not eligible to be either President or Vice-President (the last sentence of the 12th Amendment imposes the same eligibility rules on both), because she was born in Bangkok, Thailand, and thus cannot be a “Natural Born Citizen”. There would be no issue or controversy akin to the “Birther” imbroglio re Obama, who very probably was born in Hawaii, although I was never 100 percent convinced that he was not born in Mombasa or Dar Es Salaam, after the Hildabeest’s nasty minions started up that story, watched the Republicans’ nasty minions appropriate it, and then claimed it originated with the Republicans. Rather, nobody at all, including Duckworth, disputes that she was born in Thailand.

Then again, part of 2020 Insanity is that the Constitution itself is just a piece of paper created by Ancient White Honky Male Hetero Racist Slavehound Motherfuckers, which should be shredded by the American Hong Wei Bings! So who gives a fuck whether Duckworth meets some stupid qualification those Honkies stuck in there, presumably to prevent accession to the Imperial Purple by deserving People of Color whom the people want to vote for?! LOL!

I am surprised, even in this crazy year, that Ms. Kaye here did not mention the “Natural Born Citizen” issue. That itself may be an ominous sign of the effective desuetude of the requirement.

Meh. There is no way the Communists will let the Constitution get in the way if they decide Duckworth is their gal. And the rancid, corrupt Federal judiciary will probably not stop it.

I thought about that, too. It’s an intriguing, above-my-pay-grade question, and I could see good-faith arguments on either side of it.

RRRR in reply to Truejim. | July 7, 2020 at 9:26 am

There have been arguments on both sides of the question whether a person like Sen. Duckworth who was born outside the United States but with at least one US citizen parent at the time and who therefore has been considered a US citizen from birth, is or is not a “natural born citizen,” which is the requirement to serve as President. One will recall that in 2016 the far-left punditocracy was running around all over the place insisting that Ted Cruz was ineligible to be President because he was born in Canada even though his mother was a US citizen. Let’s hear what they have to say now.

Truejim in reply to RRRR. | July 7, 2020 at 11:06 am

I rarely agree these days with Larry Tribe (although I agreed with him more when I was younger). But in this instance, I believe he was correct when he argued in 2016, in a long and well researched essay, that a person in the position of Cruz, which is substantially analogous to that of Duckworth, is a citizen rightly viewed as having been “naturalized at birth” by an affirmative Federal statute so declaring such persons born abroad to one citizen parent, which is not the same thing, by proper constitutional interpretation, as a “natural born citizen” who automatically, i.e. without benefit of any such affirmative statute, becomes a citizen at the instant of birth. Tribe correctly said that you cannot simultaneously be naturalIZED and natural born.

markm in reply to RRRR. | July 7, 2020 at 11:54 pm

There have been at least two presidential candidates who were born to American parents on foreign soil: McCain and George Romney. IMO, “natural born citizen” simply means that you were born a citizen under the laws applying at the time, rather than being made one retroactively or being naturalized later. McCain was actually nominated by the Republican party; the vast majority of Republicans accepted him as qualified for the office of President then, and it’s sheer hypocrisy to change that opinion just because the candidate in question now is a Democrat.

Truejim in reply to markm. | July 8, 2020 at 12:26 pm

George Romney and John McCain are different cases. In both instances, BOTH their parents were American citizens who just happened to be temporarily residing in a foreign country.

The situations of Ted Cruz and Tammy Duckworth are materially different because only one parent was an American citizen at the time of their birth in another country. It is not obvious, meaning 100 percent indisputable as a matter of logic, that a person born in a foreign country where one parent is a national of that country (in Duckworth’s case) or a third country (in Cruz’s case, that being Cuba), and just one American parent,is an American citizen, is even a citizen at all, much less a “natural born one”.

As Tribe argued, I continue to think correctly, this uncertain situation was resolved by a federal statute that is a form of “naturalization” statute. In effect it creates a “naturalization” as of the moment of birth in that fact scenario. Its doing that is inconsistent with the person being a “natural born citizen” automatically without need for any such “naturalization” statute.

As for hypocrisy, I would of course agree that if Tribe (and others who followed him) were to change their view now to reverse it from the Cruz situation to the Duckworth situation, that would be rank hypocrisy indeed! I would not, of course, put it past them! They would presumably say that their view had “evolved” in the past four years!

While I am indebted and appreciative of her military service I am appalled and embarassed that she is my senator. Taking cheap and ignorant shots at PDJT didnt help her IMO.

She is the perfect partner for Dim Dick Durbin. We in IL can rightly claim to send the two most inept and stupid people to represent us in DC.

amatuerwrangler in reply to JimWoo. | July 6, 2020 at 12:46 pm

I disagree Jim. I’m in CA and will match your Senators with my Senators, and we will see just who has the most idiotic representatives in that august body. No one is more corrupt, unqualified, or blatantly self-serving than the Feinstein-Harris tag team.

olafauer in reply to amatuerwrangler. | July 6, 2020 at 1:07 pm

Ha! You and Woo are lightweights! I’m from New York where we have Senators Schumer and Gilebrand, Governor Cuomo and DeBlasio as Mayor of our largest city. And they are ALL communists and total idiots!

          JimWoo in reply to tom_swift. | July 6, 2020 at 3:36 pm

You guys are right NY, CA, and MA are all worthy contenders indeed and if this was a horse race im sure it would be a photo finish. Having said that if we allow inclusion of governors and mayors NY would win. DeBozo himself is so stupid he would almost assure a NY victory. But hold on we in IL have Mayor lori lightweight the homelie little scold who pretty much told PDJT fu; maybe she doesnt realize she and gov. pooper will soon be begging the feds for money. I hope PDJT tells them fu. this state is a financial shithole where gov emloyees are living the dream of maximum pay with no accountability or responsibility. Let it go bankrupt because giving these pols money is like giving a junkie heroin.

    nordic_prince in reply to JimWoo. | July 6, 2020 at 1:32 pm

She probably got her office from a combination of affirmative action voting, the dead people vote, and the sympathy vote.

Another corrupt, radical, race-baiting do-nothing Senator from Illinois?

No thank you.

Listen while advocates make peaceful and fact based arguments in favor of a political or policy stance? Ok sure.

Submit to be yelled at by an anarchist mob using actual violence along with threats of more violence to intimidate as we are hectored and abused? Hell no.

Discussion? Thus far they’ve been rioting violently and destroying. Process and debate be damned.

Because in the light of day, their arguments lose 10 out of 10 times.

The Purple Heart medal (earned for wounds in combat) that the Senator/retired Lieutenant Colonel wears on her military uniform bears the image of George Washington.

If she is OK with tearing down statues of Washington, I wonder if she will follow through on that logic and turn in her Purple Heart medal? And if she is so quick to influence the military promotion list, if she will force the military to redesign the Purple Heart medal to remove Washington’s likeness?

I do not like this soldier, her great service and sacrifices notwithstanding.

“A national dialogue”? Colonel, listening to you speak, you sound a lot like your good, “WOC (as you’d insist; it doesn’t matter in the least to me)-friend from California, Sen Kamala Harris. Your hysteria-like, take-hostages, whiffle-ball-posing-as-hardball approach to politics is off-putting, unserious, and downright goofy.

In the meantime, Ma’am, kindly release the hold on the other field grade and flag promotions, but, if it’s all the same to you, just rightly deny one to USA Lt Col Alexander Vindman, thank you. Skip unanimous consent here, it’s too sweeping.

Do justice, Senator, and not just ice the puck.

The left will pivot to Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, etc.. They have to. If our first President and those involved in forming this nation can be painted as evil racists then things like the constitution and the bill of rights must be racist as well. Individual rights are racist because they might infringe upon the wants and feelings of others. There’s no end to this stupid crap.

This person long ago became a politician and left her past behind her. (Just like a long string of politicians, Lewis, McCain, etc.) Her despicable act of holding up promotions for over 1,000 service-members of the promotion of a grandstanding chain of command breaking Lt. Col. is just a political act. No courage there.

Tammy Duckworthless.

the devil went down to georgia and finally collected that golden fiddle today..
RIP Charlie Daniels

Mmmm… hypocrisy.

When the left claim to want a discussion, it means they have made up their mind and the moment a “discussion” is agreed to, the left will take it as a win.

The left hate this country that gave them so much.

If it sounds like a duck and quacks like a nut

It must be Tammy nutduck…

I refuse to offer my thanks for Col. Duckworth’s military service. Having lost both legs fighting 7th century barbarians does not entitle her to use that authority to work for famine, bloodshed and the extinction of liberty in this country. By all accounts Adolph Hitler served honorably and bravely in WWI yet today no one bothers to thank him for his military service.

tom_swift in reply to Recovering Lutheran. | July 6, 2020 at 3:05 pm

Adolph Hitler served honorably and bravely in WWI

Yes, interesting bit of history there. Iron Crosses, 1st and 2nd Class. The First Class was a rather big deal for a common trench slogger in WW1. Some later photos of Adolf clearly show the 1914 1st Class cross on his coat.

Duckworth sounds like a lunatic. As soon as Biden focuses on a VP candidate, the candidates immediately make total fools of themselves. Strange.

Dumbworth can barely read a prepared statement. She was elected to Congress in a fixed redistricting that handed her the election. She is down at the bottom of the Senate IQ Poll giving Patty “Tennis Shoes” Murray a good run for the grand prize.

She would be perfect as Clueless Joe’s running mate.

I can’t take seriously anything said by someone with the name Tammy, unless it is a real name, not a diminutive of, say, Tamara.

Yeah, and tear down the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial, too!

Another anti-American dipshit in Congress. She needs to be jettisoned.
