Faculty at Washington and Lee U. Vote to Remove Lee’s Name from School

“in response to continuing protests for racial justice”

It’ll be fascinating to hear what the school will be called if they actually go through with this.

Forbes reports:

Washington And Lee Faculty Vote To Remove ‘Lee’ From University’s Name

Washington and Lee University, a small liberal arts university in Lexington, Virginia, has moved a step closer to being the first American institution of higher education to change its name in response to continuing protests for racial justice.

Yesterday 79% of more than 260 faculty members meeting over Zoom voted to drop the name of the confederate general. For the change to take effect, the school’s board of trustees will have to vote yes.

Today Mike McAlevey, who heads the board, said a committee would review the proposal. “We are aware that many of you think it should be easy to make a quick decision, but that is not the case,” he wrote. “We have been known as Washington and Lee University for 150 years. Reviewing the name of a distinguished and historic institution is a task not to be taken lightly.” He also said that the trustees were committed to building a diverse, inclusive community.

Only 2.7% of the school’s 1,829 undergraduates are black.

Dropping Lee’s name from the university has been under discussion since August 2017 when white supremacists marched in nearby Charlottesville. At the time, the trustees formed a committee and issued a report that rejected a name change. The trustees also voted to keep the “Generals” name for its sports teams. But the committee also said the school should acknowledge that Lee supported enslavement and the idea that the school admit only white men.

Level the campus. Sow the ground with salt. Place the aggrieved professors in jobs for which they are better qualified, such as flipping burgers at McDonalds.

Not too many years ago, my daughter graduated from W&L.

Back then it was known as a fairly conservative school with a wonderful faculty and a lot of good kids as students. My daughter roomed, at various times, with a black girl, a Mexican girl, an Asian girl and there was no race hatred on campus. They measured you by your character, not your color. (Like Martin Luther King said.)

It is heartbreaking to see how the cowardly left has infiltrated another school.

By the way, the first thing Lee did as President was to travel to the north to recruit northern students, believing that north and south had to get together. If Lincoln hadn’t been killed, he and lee would have worked together to heal the nation.

But today, the left’s goal is to destroy our country. and washington & Lee is another casualty in this war of hatred.

Possible substitute names for Washington and Lee:

• Cock and bull
• Lock and load
• Drunk and disorderly
• Hoof and mouth
• Stars and stripes
• Hot and bothered
• Hither and yon
• Crazed and confused

But that’s silly. We know they’ll go with Marx and Lenin.

But the school is named Washington AND Lee. Then shouldn’t we just call it Blankety Blank University? Blankety Blank University would be almost as good as Immastab U. (The school previously known as Harvard University).

But the committee also said the school should acknowledge that Lee supported enslavement

First of all, the word is “slavery”, not “enslavement”. The people who were freed after the Civil War were not “enslaved persons”, they were slaves. After the war they were no longer slaves. This is a linguistic trick we must fight, because giving in to it means conceding their agenda.

Second, Lee did not support slavery. He was opposed to it and hoped it would be abolished.

There’s already a Washington University, in the soon-to-be-renamed St Louis (as well as a University of Washington, a Washington State University, a Washington College, and a George Washington University). So will this one now be called Washington University in Lexington?

Don’t worry, the trustees will be meeting again later this year to remove “Washington.” Then their name will be “”, same as the group formerly known as the Dixie Chicks.

Looks like Prince was ahead of his time.

Why didn’t the faculty quit years ago if W&L was such a racist place to work?

Was it named after Robert E Lee or Henry Lee?

The trustees of Washington University were casting about for some prominent American to be president of the school. They offered the position to Robert E. somewhere around 1865, and he held the office until his death five years later.

He’s interred at the school, under Lee Chapel. I wonder if these progressives will demand that he be exhumed.

    Stagger Lee

The school would likely have died without a world-famous president.

After Lee died, his eldest son, George Washington Custis Lee, was president until 1897.

Dear Faculry.

The faculty has had its vote to change the name of the college. The name will not change.

The following choices are available to you.

1) Return to your classrooms and do your jobs.
2) Resign in protest.

If you choose 2, the building maintenance staff will make boxes, tape, and packing supplies available to you, and will assist you in taking your belongings out to your Prius.

Yours truly,
Dean T. F. Grizzly

We know how this will turn out once the leftist professors vote. Just remove the name and skip the drama!

The name “Washington & Lee” honors the men for their service to the school. “Washington” for George Washington, a generous benefactor, and “Lee” for former President Robert E. Lee, who put Washington College on its path from a post-Civil War funk to a respected university. Both were good, decent men who deserve better than they’re getting from the institution that bears their names.

Sad, saddened, ensaddened. I am living through The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down…again. The evening approached mannerly as evenings tend to do down here; pretty lulling twilight, soft pine-scented breezes, birds tweeting, frogs croaking, crickets annoying and then, all of a sudden…. a long dark night of riot, pillage, and rapine descends that isn’t over yet.
Mad, maddened, enmaddened….
