Biden Suggests Police Shoot Knife Attackers in the Leg Instead of the Heart

“Instead of standing there and teaching a cop, when there’s an unarmed person coming at them with a knife or something, you shoot them in the leg instead of in the heart is a very different thing.”

https://youtu.be/4a7NaC8i--Q

While speaking to community leaders at a church in Delaware this week, presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden suggested that when police are faced with a criminal attacker, they could shoot the person in the leg rather than the heart.

David Knowles reports at Yahoo News:

Biden suggests police could shoot assailants ‘in the leg instead of the heart’

Joe Biden said Monday that police under attack in the line of duty should shoot their assailants “in the leg instead of the heart” as a way to avert the killing of civilians.

“Instead of standing there and teaching a cop, when there’s an unarmed person coming at them with a knife or something, you shoot them in the leg instead of in the heart is a very different thing. There’s a lot of different things that could change,” Biden said in a meeting with community leaders at Bethel AME Church in Wilmington, Del.

Biden’s remarks were made as cities across the nation continue to be engulfed in violent protests in the wake of the death of George Floyd, an African-American, in police custody in Minneapolis. Four officers were fired for their role in Floyd’s death, which was captured on video. Former Officer Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, was charged Friday with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

An “unarmed” person with a knife?

See the video below:

Dan McLaughlin of National Review explains why this is a bad idea:

This is bad advice that would get people killed. Police do have a variety of tools of non-deadly force at their disposal (tasers, rubber bullets, etc.), although some of those, too, can be deadly in some circumstances. Floyd, after all, was killed by a man’s knee. But anyone who has been trained in police work or the military could tell you: Firing a gun is always potentially deadly force. You shoot for center mass, to kill, or you don’t shoot at all. If you’re not prepared to kill someone, you should not even point a loaded gun at them, much less fire it. If you don’t have grounds to shoot to kill, you don’t have grounds to shoot.

There are all kinds of things that can go wrong by trying to shoot to wound, because most people are not expert marksmen, and even expert marksmen do not have the greatest of aim in chaotic circumstances. You can miss, and the person you’re shooting at isn’t stopped. You can miss, and hit and kill an innocent bystander. You can hit someone in an artery, and they bleed to death. You can be thinking “shoot to wound,” but the second radio car responding to the scene rolls out thinking “firefight in progress” and opens both barrels.

Joe Biden has a history of saying dumb things about guns. You may remember his shotgun advice in 2013.

From U.S. News and World Report:

Joe Biden’s Shotgun Advice Could Land Jill Biden in Jail

VICE PRESIDENT Joe Biden might want to have a talk with his son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, before he makes another public statement about guns.

In a Facebook “chat” Tuesday, the vice president said that he had advised his wife, Jill, to fire a shotgun in the air from their Delaware home’s porch if she was concerned for her safety.

“I said, ‘Jill, if there’s ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here, walk out and put that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house,'” Biden said.

“You don’t need an AR-15—it’s harder to aim,” he added, “it’s harder to use, and in fact you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself. Buy a shotgun! Buy a shotgun!”

How many bullets will pass trough the leg, or more likely miss, eventually nailing some bystander? There is a reason that they aim for center mass. Biden needs to keep his yap shut, every time he opens it he removes all doubt.

Barry Soetoro in reply to JusticeDelivered. | June 2, 2020 at 6:24 pm

Cops’ hit rates in gunfights are reported to range from 17% to 30%. The vast majority of their shots miss. Most civilian tactitards seem to think they shoot far better than trained police officers, but I doubt that. Thus, a pass-through shot is the least of one’s worries, especially if following basic firearm safety, which requires, among other things, that one know the background behind one’s target.

We allow the state police to use our range for training and certifications for their officers.
The club has shooting contests cops vs club members, the cops have never won. Most cops really aren’t that interested in guns. It’s a tool for them.
That said, when facing an armed assailant the officers arms and legs are probably pretty much shaking.
How many times when they release video of an officer involved shooting does the cop yell “put the gun down”? I doubt very much they want to shoot someone. And at times it costs the cop their life instead of the bad guy.

“When an unarmed person with a knife”.
Where do you even start with a person like that?

Barry Soetoro in reply to PaulB. | June 2, 2020 at 6:18 pm

Biden has apparently never shot a handgun, and he knows nothing about human physiology. Has he abandoned his advice on buying a shotgun to shoot warning shots into the air?

He watched way too many Barnaby Jones episodes.

TrickyRicky | June 2, 2020 at 9:11 am

I was at the range yesterday. I defy this desiccated moron to show me how to shoot someone in the leg from 7 or 10 yards with accuracy in a controlled situation, much less in the chaos of a street confrontation. Joe, take your meds and go back to your basement.

I agree I’ve had 20 years of combat arms training in the service. I defy anyone to find an instructor who doesn’t teach “center-of-mass” as the aim point. Joe has watched too many Lone Ranger episodes during the quarantine.

Spoken by the guy favored by six points to be our next POTUS.

Aim for the balls, Joe. Aim for the balls.

As I recall, the Russian army was taught to aim for the belt buckle because of the way they sighted their weapons, and if you get a round into the pelvic girdle, that will stop any movement by the target.

Barry Soetoro in reply to georgfelis. | June 2, 2020 at 6:35 pm

A shot to the pelvic girdle is better than one to the leg — the pelvis is a bigger target. But, the problem with both these targets is 1) a hit is less likely to damage highly vascularized tissues, thus leaving the bad guy potentially operable, and 2) an armed bad guy on the ground with a pelvis or leg broken by a shot still has functional arms and hands with which to shoot back.

JusticeDelivered in reply to Barry Soetoro. | June 2, 2020 at 10:52 pm

When I was teaching my wife to use a pistol, I told her to aim for the belt buckle and shoot twice in rapid succession. Te point being that the second shot was likely to hit mid chest.

2smartforlibs | June 2, 2020 at 9:27 am

Quid Pro you have never taken any training don’t act like you have a clue.

You could really hurt somebody shooting them in the leg. How about shootings a knife out of their hand instead? C’mon, man!

Whitewall in reply to CKYoung. | June 2, 2020 at 9:50 am

If the shot was even lucky enough to hit the leg there is a risk that the femoral artery could be severed causing the perp to bleed to death before help could arrive. The cop would then be charged with wrongful death or something. Or maybe being an insufficient paramedic instead of a cop.

mrzee in reply to CKYoung. | June 2, 2020 at 12:46 pm

Better yet, disarm them like Bruce Lee or Kwai-Chang Caine

MattLauersNob | June 2, 2020 at 9:33 am

He’s always been an incompetent, arrogant buffoon. Now he’s an incompetent, arrogant buffoon with dementia.

Does Joe Biden have dementia? How can you tell?

NR gets it wrong, too.

You shoot for center mass, to kill, or you don’t shoot at all.

You “shoot to kill” in an assassination or an execution, not in defense. In defense you shoot to stop. In time-honored conventional thinking, the best way to “shoot to stop” is to shoot at the largest important target: i.e., “center of mass.” The fact that this is also likely to be a fatal shot is mere coincidence.

    JusticeDelivered in reply to tom_swift. | June 2, 2020 at 10:56 pm

And center mass pretty much ensures that all the bullets energy is dissipated in the target, and the bullet is not likely to exit the other side.

Slow Joe has watched too many old Roy Rogers movies. Roy would shoot the gun out of the bad guys hand, sometimes while sitting on Trigger.

How about put a uniform on Biden and send him into one of the riots, on orders to return with 2 arrestees. If he takes 2 confirmed looters/arsonists, he gets free media time on return. No arrests, he gets shot.
Seems like a fair deal, man.

inspectorudy | June 2, 2020 at 9:56 am

Maybe old Joe should talk to the cop who shot gentle giant Mike Brown. I believed he fired over seven shots to stop him and none of them were in his legs.

dmacleo in reply to inspectorudy. | June 2, 2020 at 10:06 am

point of order,on Brown both knees and elbows had traumatic injury…..oh wait, that was from the 4 point thud as he slammed to his best possible outcome.
    sorry my bad.

Bruce Hayden in reply to inspectorudy. | June 2, 2020 at 11:33 am

Officer Owen Wilson – One to the hand, to get Brown to quit trying to steal his gun. Then, after Wilson left his Tahoe, and Brown turned to charge him: two to his arm, two to his torso, and finally, two to his head, either probably fatal. He was shooting .40, which has stouter recoil than the typical 9mm, fairly accurately (no stray rounds whatsoever 7 shots, 7 hits), disciplined enough to double tap. In short, much better trained and practiced than most cops or civilians. Most cops would probably have blown through their entire magazine, missing with half their shots, and possibly not stopping Brown before he was able to close with the officer. The first pair could have been into Brown’s arm because he was swinging his arms as he charged Wilson.I can’t see him shooting for the arms. But it was notable that Wilson’s shots seemed to tighten up as he continued shooting.

Cabella’s yesterday in Kallispell had 220 grain 10 mm solid cast bear rounds. For big bears, you often have to make head shots, because torso shots are often ineffective. The solid cast, non mushrooming, rounds are to penetrate their thicker skulls. Big Mike Brown was as big as a big female black bear, and as big as many adult males. That may have been why Wilson was forced to go for head shots, after Brown continued to shake off torso shots. Of course part of that could have been a result of very likely significant intoxication on THC in Brown. And yes I did buy a couple boxes of the Buffalo Bore bear rounds. We have black bear in the neighborhood, and the larger and more aggressive browns on the ridges. I have bear rounds fro another company, but these are considered by many around here to be the best.

How is one “unarmed” if one is wielding a knife?

I’m surprised he didn’t recommend shooting off the attacker’s hat as a warning.

I took concealed carry courses in two different states, so I know how stupid that is.

The Mozambique drill, it’s a thing.

What do you expect from a rich white leftist who never had to do a hard day’s work in his life, much less serve in law enforcement?

The irony is that the ferociously #NeverTrump McLaughlin will almost certainly end up voting for Biden.

The Friendly Grizzly | June 2, 2020 at 11:19 am

I thought one was supposed to shoot an attacker through the door?

The stupidity is strong n this one, as it usually is in the untrained

I’m at a loss to understand how a shot to the leg incapacitates the trigger finger?

Frank Hammond | June 2, 2020 at 12:15 pm

Would CornPop aim for the legs?

I recommend that he tell his Secret Service detail to do that.

If we want to go the non-lethal route, arm the police with tranquiliser guns and spray the unruly crowds with darts. Bag ’em and tag ’em.

henrybowman in reply to slagothar. | June 3, 2020 at 8:16 am

Then you end up with lots of dead little ones, and lots of p*d off big ones still advancing. One dose doesn’t fit all.

drednicolson | June 2, 2020 at 12:49 pm

For a classic example of shoot-to-wound gone wrong, see the Burr-Hamilton duel.

After Alexander Hamilton intentionally shot over Aaron Burr’s head, Burr aimed for Hamilton’s thigh. This was a common target area for duelists who wanted to wound but not kill the opponent. (The real goal of a duel was to satisfy an honor dispute through the parties exposing themselves to each other’s fire.)

They were using single-shot musketball pistols owned by Hamilton. This particular pair had hair triggers set that reduced the trigger weight from a normal 9-10 pounds to only 1-2. Burr, likely uninformed of this and accustomed to the hard squeeze normally required, would have jerked the trigger.

That, combined with the general inaccuracy of the weapon involved, shifted the point of impact upwards and turned the intended flesh wound into an ultimately fatal gutshot.

healthguyfsu | June 2, 2020 at 1:00 pm

Not only is this extraordinarily bad advice, it is also completely irrelevant to the current case in the forefront.

Good old out of touch Joe.

healthguyfsu | June 2, 2020 at 1:03 pm

Is this supposed to be before or after the in-air warning shot that Joe recommended to homeowners?

surfcitylawyer | June 2, 2020 at 2:23 pm

If I remember correctly, the terrorists who took over the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1979 did shoot at the legs of people, then they could more easily murder the wounded who could not get away. 68 terrorists survived and were executed by decapitation in public squares all over Saudi Arabia.

You blew the punch line:

Only UNARMED knife attackers.

Yes, he did say that.

He shot off his mouth, and shot himself in the foot.

Alexander Cockburn, 2008:

Biden is a notorious flapjaw. His vanity deludes him into believing that every word that drops from his mouth is minted in the golden currency of Pericles. Vanity is the most conspicuous characteristic of US Senators en bloc, nourished by deferential acolytes and often expressed in loutish sexual advances to staffers, interns and the like.

SloJoe’s apparent dementia just intensifies his personality.

12 gauge , 00 buckshot, close range

will sure ruin a guys chance at winning the next ass-kicking contest

Well ok, if I am ever in a situation where an ‘unarmed’ assailant is attacking me with a knife…..I guess a double barrel 12 GA fired at the knee and second shot at thigh allowing muzzle rise to work for you ….. maybe. Though, I would prefer to stay out of CQB range if possible.

The Joey B technique doesn’t seem particularly sound v multiple targets or for keeping any distance between one and their assailant nor speak to reloading nor follow up shots…

I think I’ll just dance with the one that brought me. Thanks anyway Joe.

So.what is the point of shooting them at all then?

henrybowman | June 3, 2020 at 8:13 am

This man’s gun advice is so consistent that you could practically pass a basic gun safety exam just by choosing the answers that are the opposite of what Biden recommends.
