Gov Apologizes After Minneapolis Police Arrest CNN Crew Live On Air

Reporter Omar Jimenez repeatedly told officers the crew would move from their spots and comply with their request. The officers arrested Jimenez and the crew anyway.

Minneapolis police arrested a CNN crew, including reporter Omar Jimenez, who is black and Latino, early this morning.

CNN’s Josh Campbell said he was also confronted by the police, but after he identified himself, the cops let him stay.

The crew was covering the third day of protests in the city after a cop allegedly murdered George Floyd.

From CNN:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz told CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker that he deeply apologizes for what happened, and that he is working to have the CNN crew released immediately.

The crew, including correspondent Omar Jimenez, were handcuffed and detained as Jimenez gave a live report on a Minneapolis street shortly after 5 a.m. CT (6 a.m. ET).

Police told the crew they were being detained because they were told to move, and didn’t, one member of the CNN crew relayed to the network.

“A CNN reporter and his production team were arrested this morning in Minneapolis for doing their jobs, despite identifying themselves — a clear violation of their First Amendment rights. The authorities in Minnesota, including the Governor, must release the three CNN employees immediately,” CNN said in a statement.

The officers moved in to arrest a protester. They asked the crew to move and Jimenez identified himself.

Despite saying he would move the officer arrested the crew:

Officers approached the crew — which also included producer Bill Kirkos and photojournalist Leonel Mendez — as they moved in to arrest a protester behind them.

Jimenez could be seen holding his CNN badge while reporting, identifying himself as a reporter, and telling the officers the crew would move wherever officers needed them to. An officer gripped his arm as Jimenez talked, then put him in handcuffs.

“We can move back to where you like. We are live on the air here. … Put us back where you want us. We are getting out of your way — wherever you want us (we’ll) get out of your way,” Jimenez said before he was led away.
“We were just getting out of your way when you were advancing through the intersection,” Jimenez said.

This is not a good look for the police mainly because they allowed Campbell, who is white, to remain in his place:

CNN’s Josh Campell, who also was in the area but not standing with the on-air crew, said he, too, was approached by police, but was allowed to remain.

“I identified myself … they said, ‘OK, you’re permitted to be in the area,'” recounted Campbell, who is white. “I was treated much differently than (Jimenez) was.”

Jimenez is black and Latino.

Former Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsey, a CNN law enforcement analyst, said the arrest made no sense.

“State police are going to have a lot to answer for this arrest here,” Ramsey said. “(Jimenez is) standing there … you can see his credential. Just move him where you want to be.”

“They should have a designated (media) area, and just tell them to move to that area.”

So white guy who was not in the area of concern was not arrested but the black and latino where thus it must be their race that they were targeted.

Does this scream fake news. I thought they were not suppose to be part of the story. Sounds like a setup to me.

Can’t tell, but if officers had body cams on, they may be able to blow this setup out of the water.

This arrest will probably be the best thing to ever happen to this reporter’s career.

I am tending to believe that the incident has now been co-opted with well financed inviters in various cities to gain various “moments in time” to use to further their plan. White v. Black is one of the scenarios. This will go Country wide, BLM and Antifa will be expendable shock troops again.

This is not organic. This has been scripted. I say without a lick of evidence.

Yes, apparently race, when played correctly, is get out of jail free card.

LOL, standing in the MIDDLE of the road, a woman is being pursued right behind him and he’s saying “we’ll get out of your way”. Shouldn’t have been in the way to begin with.
Are he and the crew blind and deaf? That line of state police didn’t just materialize out of thin air.
How could someone be so stupid as to stand in the MIDDLE of the road while the cops are clearing the area? Pretty sure we’d have heard bullhorns telling people to LEAVE the area, without a caveat that moving over isn’t going to be accepted.

The cops are panicking. This is NOT good.

Are they? Though I don’t agree with the officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck, we have not seen the full video. It has been edited.

What did Floyd do between the time they tried to bring him to the car and when he was kneeling on his neck. For all we know, he could have been kneeling on his back and Floyd moved causing his knee to slip to Floyd’s neck when the picture was taken. We don’t know.

DSHornet in reply to MarkSmith. | May 29, 2020 at 9:59 am

True, we don’t know the full context of the triggering event, but how much effort would it have been for the police officer to move his leg when the man he had pinned repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe? A man is dead because he didn’t bother.

I’m not making excuses for the CNN crew. Assuredly, I’m one of those who tells Contrived News Network jokes as quickly as anyone. But if a cop can’t wait a few seconds for someone to respond to his order, he (the cop) has to share blame for any negative outcome.

We all can see the tension that threatens to further boil over. Little things like this certainly don’t help.

But if a cop can’t wait a few seconds for someone to respond to his order

Perhaps he did. We don’t know. If all we know about this incident is some fairy tale pushed by that paragon of Fake News, CNN, then we still don’t know.

Since this is not an emergency which anyone outside the area has to get overheated about, there’s no justification for jumping to conclusions. But what we do know is that nothing from CNN at any level bears any detectable relation to reality. Nothing.

GWB in reply to MarkSmith. | May 29, 2020 at 10:36 am

While it’s true we don’t know what happened to have the cop kneeling on him, we know that kneeling on his neck is NOT an approved tactic, and the length of time which he did so was outside the bounds.

And, no, the cop didn’t “slip” into that position. He remains there for a decent interval. The cop screwed up.

Tom Servo in reply to GWB. | May 29, 2020 at 11:50 am

Cold blooded murder is not a “screw up”. This was a psychopath who wanted to kill someone.

      Mac45 in reply to MarkSmith. | May 29, 2020 at 11:55 am

We have seen enough video and enough facts to come to a few accurate conclusions on the death of Floyd.

The pressure to the neck continued far longer than can be justified. Given Floyd’s initial position, on his side, placing restraining pressure on the side of his neck might be justified for a very short period of time, seconds rather than minutes, if he was actively resisting the officers. However, with a 4×1 advantage and Floyd handcuffed, the officers should have been able to maneuver him into any position that they desired quickly.

Now, pressure to the side of the neck is dangerous. It can pinch off or even collapse the carotid artery, which starves the brain of oxygen. A significantly reduced oxygen supply, to the brain, can result in unconsciousness, brain damage and even death. Now, we do not know for certain that this was the cause of death, as the autopsy has not been released and may not be complete. And, it is less likely that Floyd’s ability to breathe was significantly impaired, as he was speaking clearly. While we do not have a definitive cause of death, it is very likely that reduced blood flow to the brain, due to a compression of the carotid artery, was the cause of death. If this proves to be true, then the officer involved will likely be charged with criminal offenses, most likely manslaughter, either voluntary or involuntary.

This was a totally unnecessary death. It is a product of lack of training, supervision and, possibly, frustration on the part of the police department and its officers.

        MarkSmith in reply to Mac45. | May 29, 2020 at 12:44 pm

Not that I want to see the full video, I am concerned that there is a huge missing piece. Just like media is reporting forgery when counterfeit was the actual call.

Was the crowd during the arrest taunting the police, thus they were concern for their safety?

I am not justifying the action, just trying to understand the whole picture.

As for the riots, how much is doing to be distorted and cause more people to be injured and kills?

          Mac45 in reply to MarkSmith. | May 29, 2020 at 12:57 pm

The biggest problem with this case is a practice which is becoming more prevalent in LE. This is placing someone under arrest or even detaining them and then allowing them to lie on a sidewalk or in the street. Just put their butts into the patrol unit, seat belt them in and head for the station, if they are under arrest. This accomplishes three things. The first, is it limits the arrestee’s mobility. It keeps any bystanders from becoming involved. And, it gets the srrestee to the station or booking where he is going anyway, which frees up a lot of manpower. If that had happened in this case, Floyd would still be alive. The LEOs would still have jobs and not be facing probable criminal charges. Two of the four LEOs would have cleared the scene and been back on patrol, while one transported Floyd and another inventoried his car for impounding. And, no riots. Poor, poor training and tactical thinking here.

Rabel in reply to MarkSmith. | May 29, 2020 at 11:56 am

The full video is available. Nine minutes of a man slowly being killed.

Since anyone with a cell phone is a report, I guess they can’t arrest anyone now.

CNN reporting is a joke.

“We’ll move” is not the same as moving, it looks like they were quietly arguing.

Who STILL doesnt believe we are in a civil war with the swamp/left/islamic axis? Raise your hand.

CNN finally got the kind of country it wanted. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, “Only someone with a heart of stone could read about the arrest of CNN propagandists without laughing.”

American Human | May 29, 2020 at 10:42 am

Not sure, but here goes, I don’t know whether this was “fake” news but it could not have been a violation of their First Amendment rights. The officers didn’t stop them from broadcasting specific content but any and all content because they were within an area the police said they couldn’t be located and had to move.
Why they just couldn’t have let them move is a good question. Why they only took away the two people of color is another question. Is this faked is a third question.

FAKE NEWS

I watched the long clip of this. The CNN crew very clearly signaled that they wanted to be arrested on camera, and the police obliged them. The entire crew, black and white alike, was arrested.

The police politely asked them to get out of the way of a skirmish line that would be advancing, and the reporter kept saying they would do so, but did not move. This went on for a while, before the police came up and took one arm of the reporter, and then another. The reporter kept talking, saying he would comply, but he still stood there, recording, without moving.

So, the police finally started to cuff him and lead him off. The police let the camera crew film the black reporter being taken away, and then the police took the rest of the crew (the white ones) into temporary custody.

Word where the giddy kiddies play is that there were several of these “arrest me, please,” incidents, complete with quick release and a friendly chat with the cops afterward.

I believe the CNN crew wanted to be arrested live on camera, and did everything they could to be politely arrested. The video of this sequence gives a variety of great scenes that can be edited and taken out of context (a CNN specialty) and used to promote whatever narrative CNN wants to construct.

CNN has been hurting in their ratings because so much of their feed is fake news. They desperately need reasons for people to watch them. They couldn’t have gotten this much favorable publicity for a million dollars. Congratulations, CNN, for a PR coup.

Again, CNN imaginatively, intersectionally MAKES more, RATHER THAN REPORTS accurately, fairly, and in overall good faith less, news.

Sol Alinsky — somewhere, somehow — can’t get enough of this, the latest iteration by CNN of his Radical Rule-worshipping.

Welcome to the now-near-constant, alternate, postmodernist-soaked universe.

No worries. The folks setting fires, looting are only demonstrating or protesting, just listen to the dinosaur media, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democrat party.

Sorry, for logical sense, make that

Again, CNN imaginatively, intersectionally MAKES more, and REPORTS accurately, fairly, and in overall good faith less, news

I’ll catch on . . .

I agree with those who think this may be a setup. One undeniable constant is the CNN lies – constantly. I think there may be more than what CNN has reported.

The CNN crew got arrested because they did not obey a lawful police order, to clear the particular area that they were in. How hard would it have been for the news crew to simply walk to the sidewalk while the reporter asked his questions of the officer in charge? Instead the crew got right in the faces of the cops and refused to move, immediately. So they were moved, forcibly. This is what happens in hazardous riot situations. The police do not have time to explain to every Tom, Dick and Cronkite why they are issuing certain orders.

Looks like a CNN Fake News set-up to me.

I’ve seen other perfectly legitimate arrests that follow this pattern, mostly by loons. They go roughly like this:
Cop: We need you to move.
Nut: I’ll move in just a minute, I’m doing this.
Cop: We need you to move now. You’re blocking X.
    Nut: I’ll move shortly.
Cop: We need you to move or I’ll arrest you for not moving.
Nut: I’m moving just as soon as I’m done with this!
Cop: I’ve given you far more time than I need to, so you need to move right now or I’ll arrest you. Now.
Nut: I’m not done yet. I’ll move when I’m done.
Cop: Ok, put your arms behind your back. You’re under arrest.
Nut: Unfair! I was moving and this cop just arrests me for no reason! Sue! Sue!

The same template gets used in a lot of police interactions with loons. Frightening enough, it matches the Branch Davidian standoff too.

Brilliant tweet by the City of Minneapolis
We’re hearing unconfirmed reports that gas lines to the Third Precinct have been cut and other explosive materials are in the building.

If you are near the building, for your safety, PLEASE RETREAT in the event the building explodes.

Wouldn’t you want to retreat prior to the building exploding instead of after the fact

The New Semantics, On the Move
Under the rubric of My Truth, and the aegis of Intersectionism, by definition, to protest may include such violent destruction and the looting of personal and commercial property, along with the extreme disturbance of the peace and threat to or actual taking of human life.

It’s okay, being a natural, organic, and thus legitimate response to oppression, says the Leftist Minneapolis mayor et al; they need their space, their way to respond.

Anyway, the very thought, let alone the attempt to police this “protest” is, by definition and the fact itself, unconstitutional (contra the 1st A). Police intervention and arrest via a literal hands-on approach, if need be, would constitute unlawful violence, runs the operating idea here.

‘ See how simply altering the accepted, logically and etymologically correct meaning of legally critical words, such as to protest (BHO, by the way, was and again wants to lead somehow as the indisputable king of that; Valerie Jarret still is his muse), is, in this belief-system, to change the rule itself?

Who are we, the outside-oppressors, and supporters of the old, racist regime, etc, to deny such linguistic progress (a key predicate, it seems) to one and all?

Look out, they’re Oscar-Miking.

The Mayor sounds like an idiot:

Minneapolis Mayor to Rioters: Please Practice Social Distancing, Wear Masks

https://www.breitbart.com/crime/2020/05/28/minneapolis-mayor-to-rioters-please-practice-social-distancing-wear-masks/

Better: Look out, they’re OM.

So let me get this right. The mayor of Minneapolis is Jacob Frey, Ivy League Democrate.

Political party:Democratic-Farmer-Labor
Education:College of William and Mary (BA), Villanova University (JD)

The Police Chief of Minneapolis is Medaria Arradondo. From Wikipedia:

Arradondo is the first black person to serve as chief of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Race should not matter, but apparently Wikipedia seem to think it was important.

Janee Harteau, previous Chief resigned after the police screwed up in shot an unarmed women by mistake. Is Arradondo going to take some responsibility

Hey, Wikipedia strikes again with information that has nothing to do with ability to be Police chief:

First female, openly gay, and Native American chief in city history

Geez, looks like Minneapolis has had police problems for awhile:

https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os-xpm-1994-10-22-9410220961-story.html

The city’s police chief will resign at the end of the year following accusations of loafing officers and lawsuits claiming police brutality. Police Chief John Laux said he no longer has the political support from City Hall to do his job properly. Laux, 52, became chief in 1989 and is a 27-year veteran of the department. In April 1993, two police officers took two drunks to the hospital in the trunk of their squad car. The officers were suspended and the state Human Rights Department later found that the department fosters racism. In another case, a man who claimed he was beaten by police at a party in 1990 was awarded $700,000 by a federal jury in July. A TV report in the summer showed on-duty officers sleeping, hanging out in bars and working second jobs.

Does anyone really ask the question who is in charge here? Minneapolis has been controlled by Democrats since 1978 (and possible since 74).

…but the Police Union is for Trump….yea we are going to sell that as the problem.

My first impression is that the state police are not impressed by his cool CNN credential clipped to his belt. Nor should they be.

Are ‘journalists’ who are salaried by a ‘media’ organ normally given more leeway than a simple citizen journalist? Yeah, but it isn’t clear at all that these folks must be given any deference.

Let’s see how much air time CNN gives to discussion of this v Andy Ngo. You may remember him as the freelance journalist who keeps getting beaten by the antifa mob for daring to video their antics. Sometimes with PD looking on passively. My guess is CNN won’t make an on air comparison.

I don’t think CNN will be voicing any concerns about police tactics or procedures as they apply to the general public, instead confining their outrage that the forces of the State dared to put MEDIA in handcuffs.

So this is interesting. This guy broke out the windows at auto zone before it was put on fire. They are claiming it was a St. Cloud cop that did it.

Saint Paul Police Dispute Claim Officer Jacob Pederson Started Minneapolis Riots

https://discussglobal.com/police-dispute-jacob-pederson-minneapolis-riots/

What is obvious is that Pederson name is misspelled on other social media and this might be another setup.

I suspect that BLM or some other group is inciting this, not the police.

It his direct play form Rules for Radicals.

They are trying to do everything thing they can to destroy Trump.

P.S. Lose the keys to their cells. Then lose track of where they’ve been imprisoned. Then go all Sgt. Schultz when CNN wants them released.

BierceAmbrose | May 29, 2020 at 3:14 pm

Wow. That’s a level of cluelessness you don’t often see.

Stand back; they’re professionals.

I am just curious whether this is the only arrest made by LE in Minneapolis.

When a Cop tells you to move…
You don’t start telling him you will be pleased to move if you get in the way.
You just move.

Where is the proof his death was racially motivated?
