The Kennedy Center decided to lay off staffers and not pay the musicians after April 3rd despite receiving $25 million in the Wuhan coronavirus bill.

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise came out in support of a bill to take back the money while slamming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi over her pet projects.

Scalise told Fox News that the Kennedy Center’s actions show “the misplaced priorities of Speaker Pelosi.” He reminded the audience that while Democrats and Republicans worked together on a bill “Nancy Pelosi literally held up a bill for days to get her pet projects including the money for the Kennedy Center.”

Ed Malaga, president of the Local 161-710 of the American Federation of musicians said:

“This decision, from an organization with an endowment of nearly $100 million, is not only outrageous — coming after the musicians had expressed their willingness to discuss ways to accommodate the Kennedy Center during this challenging time — it is also blatantly illegal under the parties’ collective bargaining agreement. That agreement specifically requires that the center provide six weeks’ notice before it can stop paying musicians for economic reasons.”
