U. Oklahoma: Anti-racism Protesters Demand Provost Resign and University Bring Popeyes to Campus

They demanded “a semester-long class focused on diversity, and a new multicultural center that will feature meeting spaces for marginalized students, common areas, study rooms and a Popeyes restaurant.”

Protesters from the Black Emergency Response Team (BERT) at the University of Oklahoma have staged sit-ins at interim President Joseph Harroz’s office in Evans Hall to demand the resignation of Provost (senior administrative official) Kyle Harper.

The protesters claim Harper “allows racism to fester on campus” after two professors used the n-word in classrooms, the College Fix reports.

The two incidents:

Earlier this week, Kathleen Brosnan, an OU faculty member in the history department, said the n-word multiple times while reading from a 1920’s U.S. Senate document.

Peter Gade, director of graduate studies for the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication and Gaylord Family endowed chair, used the N-word while comparing its usage to the phrase “OK, boomer.”

In all honesty, was it necessary to actually say the word or even hint at it? I hate being politically correct, but there are some words I will not use or tolerate being said in my presence. That is one of the few.

Brosnan apologized. She also gave a “trigger warning” before she read the word, but still. Didn’t have to actually say it.

Gade apologized and stepped down for the semester. He promised to “attend racial sensitivity courses.”

BERT wants more than Harper’s resignation. They demand “a semester-long class focused on diversity, and a new multicultural center that will feature meeting spaces for marginalized students, common areas, study rooms and a Popeyes restaurant.”

I have NO idea what a Popeye’s has to do with racism on the OU campus, but okay.

However, the updated version of demands does not include Popeye’s. It seems BERT deleted the tweet with the original picture that listed the demands.

Harroz promised the “faculty, staff and administrators will be required to complete a new diversity, equity, and inclusion training regimen.”

Students already take part in this training, but it will be the first time the higher-ups will have to do it.

OU kept security at Evans Hall. They told the students they can stay after it closes at 5 p.m., but no one can come in or come back in after that time.

It’s not whether it is necessary to use the word, but whether freedom should allow the word to be used, particularly as an educational tool in this case.

I think you are wrong on this one, Mary. JMO

“In all honesty, was it necessary to actually say the word or even hint at it? I hate being politically correct, but there are some words I will not use or tolerate being said in my presence. That is one of the few.”

The professor was reading from a historical document. The problem is with the agitating snowflakes, not the N-word. Please don’t turn PC.
How do you feel about nearly every rap “song”?

No one should wonder why there’s an “achievement gap” when choice priorities are revealed.

Knee-Grows are their own worst enemies. Rather than complaining about certain words, they’d be better off thoroughly learning quadratic equations and Algebra ! & 2. Anything beyond that would be all to the good.

I think the Popeyes could be extremely helpful in their future career choices. They could be a cook, janitor or counter person.
Considering their demands those may worthy choices for these high eye que jeaneouses.

Hunger strikes should never be allowed to move the needle for anyone in a 1st world country.

Ridiculous, it’s just a word, not a magic spell. Jesus, what a bunch of simple idiots.

MarkSmith in reply to BuckIV. | February 27, 2020 at 3:43 pm

Hey, you are not allow to use Jesus either. Now on a serious note, this PC is has reached a point where we need to normalize the word to cut the crap. Someone need to remind people that they are students and should go pound sand.

Like a demanding little kid, they need to be told no!! To bad and grow up. Trigger word, my a$$.

      George_Kaplan in reply to MarkSmith. | February 27, 2020 at 6:30 pm

No no it’s fine to use Jesus appropriately, the issue is using it blasphemouslyoffensively.

No no it’s fine to use Jesus appropriately, the issue is using it blasphemouslyoffensively.

By the standard set by these children, context does not matter. You can’t use the J-word in its historical context nor blasphemously. That’s how foolish they are.

    3manped in reply to BuckIV. | February 27, 2020 at 5:21 pm

This is a response typical of a double digit IQ “woke” person.

I think the mandatory diversity class is OK as long as lunch includes chitlins and watermelon. And the new Popeyes should be required to offer neck bones and collard greens.

It might mean something if there was a real issue not a makeup in your empty skull issue. This is why only the best and brightest should be promoted not the box of crayons the left insists on.

Colonel Travis | February 27, 2020 at 3:25 pm

1.) As bad as that or any other word is, not a fan of outright banning language. Look where it leads. Pure tyranny.

2.) Don’t say the N Word! Give us fried chicken! I’m mean, c’mon guys…

And I am just dying here at how they are stereotyping themselves. Should they also demand a watermelon stand next to the Popeye’s?

And I think Mary Chastain is wrong in her assessment on when it is “OK” to use the *gasp* N-word. The two examples given is just about as retarded as it gets. These spoiled brats are looking for ANY excuse to act like children.

OMG – someone said the “N” word and these poor little victims are traumatized for life. Baloney.

People are going to use a lot of words you don’t like during your life time. Deal with it.

But the “N” word is somehow the worst of the worst. Not to me.

These foul mouthed young people who cannot speak a sentence with the “Eff” word or who take the name of the Lord my God in vain offend and distress me. Often. I deal with it. Because it’s a free country. But if administrators keep pandering to these little tyrants it soon won’t be.

Yes,,,, you say the “N” word out loud as it was written in the document. To not say it or mumble “N” this or “N” that is to diminish the impact of the word. “There once was a word that started with “N” that we do not say… and since it was ex-sponged from all literature we don’t know what it was, how it was spelled, how it was pronounced nor how it was fully used.” Newspeak.

Milhouse in reply to alaskabob. | February 27, 2020 at 4:54 pm

    ex-sponged?

alaskabob in reply to Milhouse. | February 27, 2020 at 8:42 pm

“expunged”…spell check got me …. but now we can make it the word for today. I could have spelled out the “N” word as in South Park …

artichoke in reply to alaskabob. | February 27, 2020 at 5:07 pm

Don’t mumble. Say “N-word”, not the actual word itself, but “N-word”. Say it every time that word appears in the text. Say it just as every other word, no quieter, no louder, no special inflection, just a normal word. You just pronounce it that way, rather than according to the rules of phonics.

Absolutely don’t mumble, don’t apologize, and don’t let them put you in a difficult position. I just gave the recipe for avoiding difficulty, with no trouble and no concession.

ScottTheEngineer | February 27, 2020 at 3:39 pm

You dont use the n word? Then what do you call people that leave there shopping carts in the middle of the parking lot.

After all the things I have been called, simply for being white…..and that was BEFORE I supported Trump, I really do NOT care if they are offended.

In fact, I relish the idea.

OMG, I almost passed out laughing reading that headline.

I had former employee who blamed “whitey”” for virtually everything that went wrong for her in her career. (A very racist individual) It did nothing but alienate every person that come in contact with. We eventually fired her because of her behavior – steeped in racism. Over the years, I have had several african american clients and employees who were successful. The common denominator – They all worked hard and none of them were racist or blamed “whitey” for anytime they did not have success.

well I was wrong. it passed here.
not a word I use often, have no need to.lot of derogatory words I have no need/desire to use.
but if I want to use them I should be allowed.
now private sites like this often have a TOS forbidding these words. I am ok with that, these colleges/etc are not fully private. they get funding from multiple sources nad have to adhere to federal and state standards. IMO (and many disagree, thats fine) this attaches a government oversight to them and first amendment should apply.

In all honesty, was it necessary to actually say the word or even hint at it? I hate being politically correct, but there are some words I will not use or tolerate being said in my presence. That is one of the few.

so you allow letters in a certain order have power over you and you force that power onto others near you.
nice.
you are weak and scared of a word.

You never allow the inmates to run the asylum.

    Right!
All these administrations need to grow a backbone and be the adults in charge!
These students are like 2 year olds pitching a tantrum until they get their way.
It’s ridiculous what continues to be allowed on campuses.
Suspend them. Expel them. Tell them to grow up or get out.
They’re obviously not mature enough to attend college.

notamemberofanyorganizedpolicital | February 27, 2020 at 4:49 pm

Would you believe there are some even poorer Oklahoma colleges that have already done that.

It’s bad enough the state’s taxpayers have to support two expensive state university systems…… Both with Major and Expense competing athletic programs and other duplicate academic programs….. both within about 60 miles of each other…

It makes no sense to demand students take a semester of diversity stuff. Students weren’t teaching those classes. This is just a power grab.

It should be treated as such. They should get the Popeyes and nothing else.

As for the guy who used the N-word multiple times in class, apparently he forced the issue, when the students were discreetly avoiding it. I don’t even care if they fire him. When I say I want this racial stuff downplayed, I have to be consistent. We need less racial stuff, not more.

You’ve got to be kidding. A Popeye’s? Have you seen the feral behavior at Popeye’s since they released their chicken sandwich?

artichoke in reply to Paul. | February 27, 2020 at 5:00 pm

I used to like Popeyes — 20 years ago or more. Don’t know how it’s changed, but presumably one can still get the crispy fried chicken there. This is the only one of their “demands” that might actually be a good idea.

Some Black people have NO problem using that word as Noun, Verb and punctuation. This is a standard SJW fishing expedition probably thought up by a Gender Studies / Diversity professor. Since most of the protestors look pretty ‘Drought and Famine Resistant’ the hungry strike is theater…The school needs to expel a few for trespassing and the problem will suddenly vanish…

You say “N-word” (literally, the letter, followed by “word”) ever time that word appears on the page.

It’s probably very frustrating to race activists when that occurs, to have a way of conveying the information at no risk, with no sensitivity, no need or wish to apologize, just say “N-word”.

If you have to process that literature at all.

amwick in reply to artichoke. | February 27, 2020 at 5:09 pm

Pretty soon “n-word” will cause just as much trauma.
    Where does this end?

artichoke in reply to amwick. | February 28, 2020 at 11:45 pm

I won’t play that move for them. I don’t think it will work. Or, if the triggering is legitimate, then this should not affect them because the new “word” has none of that traumatic history.

Basically, if one can’t say “n-word” it puts the whole subjects of discussion off limits, which is fine too. But let them say that.

The Friendly Grizzly | February 27, 2020 at 5:10 pm

I will ask the same question here, as I am asking other threads like this. How many of these students are taking real majors?

Diversity (e.g. racism, sexism) or color judgment on parade.

Beep, bleep, or some sym-pathetic, em-pathetic euphemism. The same style guide followed by the Pro-Choice Chamber, not limited to selective-child, cannibalized-child.

Popeye’s??? Probably a reaction to a local Chick Fil’A.

Personally, I’d demand a Braum’s with a Fresh Market. After all, it’s the best in local food concept. Hmm, sound not have written that down – I’m getting an urge to drive to the local Bruam’s.

https://www.braums.com/

The jokes virtually write themselves.

I wonder how many of the half million who died in the civil war imagined they were dying for this crap.

An unprecedented reparations in blood and treasure. Also, a legacy of confronting diversity, redistributive change, other transcivil doctrines, and classes of bigotry.

Correction: not “reparations”, but rather sacrifice, personal sacrifice, to mitigate its progress.

So glad to see that some of them went home to shower before continuing their protests–so sensitive of them!

Once you bow to the Left on any issue, they own you. You are way put of line saying some words cannot be spoken in your presence.

Way. Out. Of. line.

The nword will never die, it is cultivated and flourishing, at the trough of public funds.

This whole discussion is R-word.

So it’s ok to say “N” word, but not the actual word, right? So it’s ok to think the word…and when you say the phrase “N” word, you are thinking of the read word while your audience is also thinking of the real word, but by using the code word, it makes everything ok, right?

Part of the reason the actual word needs to be said in a historical context or reference is to really illustrate the ugliness. We lose a real taste of real history when we water things down, and that’s what we do when we start sanitizing stuff. The horrors of slavery should be taught with as much accurate ugliness as possible. The ugly words need to be used. Leaving out the awful language, to me, is just as bad as leaving out ugly historical facts. We need to teach it all and hear it all in order to properly know who we were, who we are, and where we are going.

DaveGinOly in reply to jaudio. | February 27, 2020 at 8:03 pm

It’s like saying “dad-gum” instead of “god damn.” Or, as on BSG, “frack” instead of…
It’s really foolish because nobody is fooled. Would an African-American be less offended if someone said to him “Hey, N-word.” Probably not.
And #MeToo, I’ve been called worse (and sometimes deserved it).

artichoke in reply to jaudio. | February 27, 2020 at 9:30 pm

I might care about all that if people could do so without personal risk. But instead it just makes one a target. So absolutely, just smoothly say “n-word” as a new pronunciation of the word.

Some of the black students expressed discomfort, in words later or by leaving / dropping the class. So whatever your feelings about it, what you say isn’t even what the customers nor the bosses want.

Say, anybody know the number for the White Emergency Response Team?

George, you hit the nail on the head. This isn’t about giving “offense” by using a word, it’s about giving offense by not abiding by the rules they’ve set on discussions of race, gender, and politics in general. It’s part of the continuing effort by the Left to dominate the intellectual battlespace by denying their opponents the use of certain weapons (words and ideas) against which they have no other defense. They would like us to unilaterally disarm ourselves by agreeing to stop using certain words and to stop promoting certain ideas (because, you know, they’re racisss).

artichoke in reply to DaveGinOly. | February 27, 2020 at 9:32 pm

Why do you advocate people putting themselves at professional risk? By saying “n-word” one gives up none of the “battlespace” if one is fighting a battle; everyone equates it to the actual word.

Lucifer Morningstar | February 27, 2020 at 8:01 pm

. . . and a Popeyes restaurant.

These idiots do realize that Popeyes is owned and operated by a corporation headed by white people, right? No blacks at the corporate offices.

However, the updated version of demands does not include Popeye’s. It seems BERT deleted the tweet with the original picture that listed the demands.

And this is why one should always, always get screenshots of the lunatic rantings of these liberal students.

Leave the satire to the bee. If this is real I want off this ride

There is a story about a university president (MIT I believe) who walked into a university building being “held” by students and said ..

“anybody who is here 5 minutes from now, won’t be here tomorrow”

.. the building was empty in 4 minutes

According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey, obesity rates for black Americans is at an all time high adjusted at 46.8 %…..so a hunger strike may be better for them than a Popeyes.

As a resident of central OK and an OU alumnus, this is just downright embarrassing. Thank goodness most of my kids went to trade and tech schools, and will out earn the idiots having their little tantrum over 1st world problems .

Okay, BERT was there but where was ERNIE (Emergency Response Network Inside EVERYONE) that should’ve told the BERT folks (like that internal conscious most of us have), “gee, we’re bithching about nothing”. Sadly, ERNIE, although he’s BERT’s partner never shows up!

Honestly, who really likes naggers?
