Panel at U. Michigan Blames Western Colonialism for Gender Violence Among Immigrants

“Gender Violence, Immigrant Vulnerability and the State: A Symposium”

Do you ever just sit back and marvel at the left’s ability to come up with things like this?

The College Fix reports:

U. Michigan panel: Western colonialism at fault for gender violence among immigrants

In the latest example of higher education victimology, a panel at the University of Michigan discussed on Monday how Western colonialism is culpable for gender violence in the immigrant community.

According to The Michigan Daily, UM women’s studies professor Debotri Dhar, organizer of the “Gender Violence, Immigrant Vulnerability and the State: A Symposium” event, claimed that “residual ideals from the colonial era have resulted in immigrants of color being framed as burdens on the state” which contribute to “immigrant vulnerability and gender violence.”

Dhar added that in our current “very politically divisive” atmosphere, the situation surrounding immigrants, “our most vulnerable individuals,” can be overlooked. Invoking “intersectionality,” Dhar claimed people view immigrants via two lenses — the first is as “pollutants” to state:

Two hundred plus years of countries in the Global South being colonized and plundered, so travel has never been a problem as long as it be (sic) white communities that have done it. So when I hear the phrase ‘Go back to your country,’ what I register there is not that everyone should ‘go back to their countries,’ but that only elite white communities should be able to travel.

The second is the “white savior complex,” which essentially is a gentler form of colonialism: “Discourse of the public sphere is okay with immigrants” … just so long as white supremacy is maintained.

Gender Violence. I had a professor ask me once if I believed the Bible was anti-woman. I could not back up my gut reaction to “no” at the time, but that question has stayed with me for the last 25 years. And now I can back it up.

And while European culture and Christianity was not perfect in re: women, I would much rather have been born a girl in 1300/1500/1700/1900 Europe than a girl in any other culture or religion. Some small indigenous tribes around the world may be an exception to that, but for any culture that expanded beyond original tribal lands, my statement stands.

And if these immigrants have gender violence issues, I daresay it is in spite of – not because of – Western values “inflicted” upon them.

“our most vulnerable individuals,”
Ummmm, are you pro-abortion?

what I register there is not … but that
So, you don’t actually deal in facts, but whatever you feel is right.

It’s always been a source of confusion for me to have “feminists” supporting immigration from the most misogynistic cultures on the planet. None of these people would travel to Somalia and denounce tribalism but, colonialism (something that disappeared here in the US in 1776) is always fair game. If things are so bad here, why are there people lined up in every other country wanting to come here?

“residual ideals from the colonial era have resulted in immigrants of color being framed as burdens on the state”. Bullshit. It is not “residual ideals” that cause “burdens on the state” to be so identified. All immigrants — of color or not — who are dependents on welfare are OBJECTIVELY burdens on the state.

“Western colonialism is culpable for gender violence in the immigrant community”

–> Because, once you’ve declared that it’s “racist” to point out the shortcomings of any non-Western culture, where else is there to go? Y

So, your culture does ‘honor killings’? Declares apostates must be killed? Routine clitorectomies? And immigrants from these cultures continue to do so? What else could possibly be the source of these, if not Western imperialism?

Although the formulation really should be, “White Male Western colonialism,” shouldn’t it?

(Yes, Orwell referred to this sort of speech (the reflexive, autonomic, axiomatic vocal support of political orthodoxies) as “Duckspeak.”)
