While California burns, Gov. Newsom signs new bills banning “lunch shaming,” ending fur sales, and implementing the nation’s broadest gun seizure laws.

California regularly experiences Santa Ana conditions that can spread wildfires. Major wildfires have occurred since 2003 that have ravaged various regions of the state causing significant loss of life, property, and resources.

Despite the science behind the fires, state politicians still promote the climate crisis agenda and not moving toward meaningful solutions.

Now, at least three citizens have died in the most recent blazes.

The fires that have hit Southern California have been linked to three deaths as officials on Sunday continue to gain ground.

In the Saddleridge fire that swept across the San Fernando Valley foothills, a man in his late 50s died after suffering a heart attack while talking with firefighters early Friday.

In the Sandalwood fire that burned dozens of mobile homes in Calimesa, two people died.

Instead of focusing on truly urgent matters, our governor and legislators have been trying to increase their virtue signaling capacity.

To start with, Governor Gavin Newsome has signed into law a bill that guarantees all students a state-funded meal of their choice, even if their parent or guardian has unpaid meal fees. This is to prevent “lunch shaming.

In a statement Saturday, Gov. Gavin Newsom thanked Ryan Kyote, a third-grader at an elementary school in Napa County who brought national attention to the practice by paying for all the food service bills of his fellow students at the school.

Under the new law, a school can no longer give a student a cheaper alternative meal.

Not only do we take our climate policy from children, but out fiscal policies as well.

Next, California has become the first state to ban fur sales...killing a segment of our fashion industry and personal choice. The new bans join the virtue-signaling insanity including ending profit prisons and immigrant detention centers and prohibiting small-sized hotel shampoo bottles.

The new fur law, which takes effect in 2023, was lauded by animal rights activists despite fervent opposition from the billion-dollar U.S. fur industry and threats of a lawsuit from the Fur Information Council of America.

“California is a leader when it comes to animal welfare, and today that leadership includes banning the sale of fur,” Newsom said in a statement. “But we are doing more than that. We are making a statement to the world that beautiful wild animals like bears and tigers have no place on trapeze wires or jumping through flames.”

A spokesperson for the Fur Information Council said in a statement the new law is part of a “radical vegan agenda using fur as the first step to other bans on what we wear and eat.”

Interestingly, the California First Lady has been photographed wearing…fur.

Finally, California Newsom’s pen flew this past Friday, as he signed 15 gun-related bills into law Friday, which included the nation’s broadest seizure rules.

One of the bills, which expands a so-called “red flag” law to allow co-workers, employers and educators to seek gun violence restraining orders against firearms owners they fear are a danger to themselves and others, was vetoed twice by Newsom’s predecessor, Jerry Brown.

Newsom also signed a companion bill allowing the gun violence restraining orders to last one and five years, although the gun owners could petition to end those restrictions earlier. The bill also allows judges to issue search warrants at the same time as they grant the orders. The warrants can be used immediately if the gun owners are served with the relinquishment orders but fail to turn over the firearms or ammunition.

I know states are supposed to be the laboratories of Democracy, but California is clearly being run by Dr. Frederick Frankenstein…”Young Frankenstein.”

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Now that brain that you gave me. Was it Hans Delbruck’s?
        Igor: No.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Ah! Very good. Would you mind telling me whose brain I DID put in?
Igor: Then you won’t be angry?
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: I will NOT be angry.
        Igor: Abby someone.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [pause, then] Abby someone. Abby who?

Gavin Newsome is there to make sure there is a free lunch for everyone.

I suspect this free lunch program will turn out to be good for the cigarette and booze sales in California, as low income parents re-budget their lunch money funds.

The wall is being built on the wrong border.

Applause for the title, Ms. Eastman.?

I would argue that it is Freddie Krueger who runs the People’s Democratic Republic of California

Signing bills to shred civil rights while Rome burns. How Progressive.

Not even joking, while reading the story I thought to myself California is burning and gavin can’t even decide on what song to play on the fiddle. Just when I think it can’t get any more insane, it does. Lunch shaming? JFC

There is discussion if the red area “country boys can survive” would be able to do insurgent attacks to destroy the infrastructure to the deep blue areas.

Their main problem might be that the infrastructure might collapse before any “war” breaks out.

They have Typhus, and might get the Plague (and there’s hepatitis). Their sidewalks are open sewers. And they can’t keep the lights on or enough water (a reprieve from a rainy year though). 3rd world.

Subotai Bahadur in reply to tz. | October 14, 2019 at 8:36 pm

The infrastructure collapse would be a feature for the Deplorables, not a bug. The “war” would be largely a siege of urban Leftists who have to import food, water, power, fuel, and pretty much anything through some fairly easily interdicted routes. The subject may be worth study.

How crazy are they when even Gov. Moonbeam Brown recognized that the law was Unconstitutional on multiple grounds?

nraendowment in reply to puhiawa. | October 15, 2019 at 1:09 pm

Newsom makes Moonbeam Brown look like Reagan.

Newsom is the state equivalent of Hillary if she had won in 2016. The coup de grâce to our Constitution and our freedoms.

Newsom will sign any anti-American legislation that lands on his desk.

There is a big difference between Venezuela and California. Venezuela is far away and neither attached to nor influential within the United States. They export leftist doctrine (and both fellow travelers and useful idiots) to the rest of the country preaching the promise of socialist utopia with no downside. What has been successful for California has not been because of Leftist ideology and government… but in spite of it. The Left did not create California but it will be its demise. Per the Milgrom experiment the unopposed and unbridled Left will continue on until beyond repair.

wonder which 5 year plan they are in

Is there a fur buy back program as well. Raid the Hollywood Elite and the wardrobe closets.

“that’s FRAHN-Ken-steen!”

but….you can abort all the babies you want.

Me thinks some priorities are back assward.

California is the poster child for the level of dysfunction that is the progressive mind. Consider the fire issue in California as a prime example.
>
In California environmentalists have made demands that certain efforts such as controlled burns, the removal of dead brush, and other actions, be treated as a sin against nature so these practices were all stopped. Gone was the past wisdom of using these practices as a preventative measure to protect against the well known issue of the dry season that then became the fire season made worse with their periods of high winds.
>
Likewise, the State of California placed more and more restraints on the utilities there. These restraints and movements resulted in demanding that their utilities spend inordinate sums on things such as green and renewable power. Even though Californians already paid some of the highest utility rates due to other regulations, utilities there were not allowed to raise rates due to additional regulations so the money had to be found from somewhere. Add to that the normal corruption and incompetence found in quasi-state run utilities and the result should have been easily predicted.
>
That prediction was how maintenance is always the first issue on the cutting block when money gets tight. So it happened in California with the result being how failures of equipment started fires that resulted in devastating loses to the public and state. People sued, the utilities lost, and then the utilities went bankrupt.
>
Now comes the absurd conclusion to all of this. Utilities, incapable of finding the money to address all the regulations, unable to find relief to repair the aging infrastructure, as well as other demands being made by the state who always assumes corporations, like people, are endlessly rich thus able to afford everything imaginable, are now cutting the power whenever conditions appear ripe for fire. This means that when the dry season is present and the winds start blowing, the utilities are now cutting the power to their customers until the winds stop blowing and the power lines can be examined. While poor leadership at the utilities deserves some part of the blame, the lion’s share of the blame goes to the incalculably incompetent Leftist leadership in their politics and government whose policies and such have now resulted in these roving power stoppages. Even more amazing is how so many there just accept this situation as something not worth getting excited about.
>
So now we have a state that is a major economic power facing power shortages dues to political mismanagement. They are little different than Venezuela which now raises two very important questions. The first is why the people of California continue to accept this kind of leadership and not rise up in revolt and the second is how the Left can have such hubris as to proclaim how their policies, their thinking, their ideals, and so forth, are so superior even after serial failures brought about by their leadership in California. The truly bad news is that California is just the start of these failures for Detroit, Chicago, and so many other Democrat/Leftist led cities, are every bit as bad.

now raises two very important questions
A third question, too: In what way can California be said to have a “republican form of government” now?

GusPatriot in reply to Cleetus. | October 15, 2019 at 8:43 pm

The people affected most are the disenfranchised slaves in the state (not the urban zombies that are all in). If you don’t support the state policies, you are granted a quasi-slave status since you have 0 voice in state policies and politics. The assembly has such a heavy majority, the few GOP members are relegated to fetching coffee.

It’s no wonder 75% of the California quasi-slave population has at least considered escape. Anchors such as family and jobs make that escape more difficult, especially with aging parents.

The insanity is simply a means to solve the housing crisis. If the exodus indeed does bleed the state as much as threatened, there will magically be a ton of housing made available. Pay no attention to the fact the state will ratchet up it’s third world draconian circus status even more by then.

Major wildfires have occurred since 2003
Oh hun, you are way too young……
Those major wildfires have been around since… well, since California. Heck, the major ones I personally witnessed were in 1993, iirc – a decade before the date you mention.
(BTW, flying into an airfield at night, with it surrounded by fires on the hills, is a wild experience.)

erc in reply to GWB. | October 15, 2019 at 11:14 am

Summer of ’63, my friend and I worked as laborers building the road from Santa Barbara up over the hills to Santa Ynez past Lake Cachuma. End of our college freshman years.

My Dad told us that if we got conscripted to fight any wildfires, to tell the firemen that we had previous firefighting experience from the Montecito fire, which was in 1961 or 62.

If they believed us, we would have got paid 35 cents an hour instead of the 25 cents that inexperienced fighters were paid.

Here’s a link to a list of historic California fires:

Hey, don’t forget the guy who died because they turned the lights out. To prevent wildfires.

California is a leader when it comes to animal welfare
You including all those animals burned to death in the fires you make worse?

including ending profit prisons and immigrant detention centers
Ummm, how do they intend to do that? I doubt that any of them are state-run (being a sanctuary state, and all), and they couldn’t possibly pass a law that would prevent the feds from contracting that out. OK, they could pass one, but it won’t survive any sort of judicial challenge.

California is clearly being run by Dr. Frederick Frankenstein
Please. Dr Frankensteen (“Frankenstein!”) was far and away smarter and more judicious than anyone in the state gov’t of California.
I will say, however, that you have a good analogy for too many of the voters in CA with Eyegor.
“What hump?”

There are four political families that have run California for decades, and acquired great wealth in the process. This is what political dynasties do. Gavin Newsom is Nancy Pelosi’s nephew.

California’s lethal wildfires are the result of 40 years of incompetent forest management. Fire the eco-hippies and put the professional foresters back in charge.

Q: What’s the difference between California and other third world locations?

A: Nothing.

GusPatriot in reply to Andy. | October 15, 2019 at 8:47 pm

This third world has a much larger and more powerful elite class that controls the state. It is early in its descent to true third world. See Venezuela’s earlier history at the start of it’s road to misery. That’s about where CA is.
