Faculty at Purdue University Fights Effort to Bring Chick-fil-A to Campus

“even less pleased with the impression that Purdue’s administration ignored their concerns out of hand”

The left’s obsession with Chick-fil-A is ridiculous. And these are faculty members, not students.

The Journal and Courier reports:

Purdue faculty fights back against university’s support for Chick-fil-A on campus

Not happy that Chick-fil-A was coming to the West Lafayette campus – and even less pleased with the impression that Purdue’s administration ignored their concerns out of hand – faculty on the University Senate voted overwhelmingly Monday on measure saying that all commercial ventures on campus should “uphold the same values” the university lists for itself.

The vote from faculty representatives came a little more than month after Purdue stood by plans to bring a Chick-fil-A to a new residence hall in 2020 after being lobbied by students, despite the University Senate’s leanings and persistent concerns among some on campus about the chicken sandwich restaurant CEO’s stances and company donations to groups seen as anti-LGBTQ.

The word from President Mitch Daniels’ administration seemed to clip the conversation that faculty had insisted wasn’t just about Chick-fil-A when a statement from Hovde Hall dismissed the issue before the University Senate had a chance to vote on the matter.

Purdue’s statement, coming the same week the University Senate took up the matter in September: “While we respect and protect the rights of all to express their opinions at Purdue, this clarification is intended to reassure our students and others that this long-requested dining option will not be taken from them and to dispel any impression that Purdue would ever seriously consider such an action.”

Who should have more say about food served in a dorm? Faculty who don’t eat there or students who do??

So the students are OK, but the faculty are snowflakes. I think this is the school, well known for engineering, where the “engineering education” people want to put social agendas into the part of the curriculum they control.

They do that, and it won’t be much of an engineering school anymore.

They way they do it is there’s a pre-engineering level that has like basic mechanics and some other things that apply to any sort of engineering, that’s controlled by the “engineering education” bureaucracy. This part is at risk of gaining the richness of diversity.

Then the student applies to a specific engineering department, and then that department takes over. At that point hopefully the bull-pucky stops.

It’s probably a freshman dorm. The faculty hasn’t had a chance to brainwash them yet.

This sounds more like communist China than the USA. We expect China to blacklist companies they can’t control, like they are doing with the NBA, Tarantino, etc.

But in the USA, we expect freedom of speech and freedom of thought. I suspect these ignorant faculty members would mostly vote for Socialist political candidates, rather than for those that back freedom of speech and thought.

Mitch Daniels was awesome as director of OMB (“Don’t just stand there, spend something” said in disgust), as Indiana’s governor (two-terms), and is telling the faculty snowflakes at Purdue to f**k off and let the adults decide things. You should have heard the complaining when the lefties heard Daniels was coming there to be the school president. America lost when Mitch deferred on a presidential campaign.

Self-Disclosure: I retired from Purdue in 2017. Based on my 21 years of administrative experience at that institution, most of the faculty (particularly those in the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Engineering Education) roundly and richly deserve to be ignored.
