NOAA officials face tempest of progressive fury after defending Trump on #SharpieGate
Another Neptune-scale storm fueled by Trump Derangement Syndrome
Good news abounds for President Donald Trump. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Friday he doesn’t “at all” expect the U.S. to enter a recession. The border wall is steadily going up as defense funds are actually being used for national defense. Mexico is paying to stop illegal border crossing. Trade talks with China are resuming.
Therefore, as my colleague Mike LaChance noted, the American press has to gin-up anti-Trump sentiment any way they can. So reporters beclowned themselves by focusing on a sharpie-altered map projecting the path of Hurricane Dorian. Forget the fact that the professional maps were initially wrong as well or that none of the “expert” forecasters predicted Dorian would stall over the Bahamas and stay-off the Florida coast.
What the press did not count on was Trump’s tenacious defense of the addition, and the fact that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) would release a statement supporting the President.
Now NOAA officials are facing tempest of progressive fury after issuing the notice.
They say NOAA’s action risks the credibility of the nation’s weather and science agency and may even risk lives.
The critics served both Republican and Democratic presidents. Among them are former NOAA leaders and a former disaster response chief.
“This rewriting history to satisfy an ego diminishes NOAA,” Elbert “Joe” Friday, former Republican-appointed director of the National Weather Service, said on Facebook. He told The Associated Press on Saturday: “We don’t want to get the point where science is determined by politics rather than science and facts. And I’m afraid this is an example where this is beginning to occur.”
Employees of the National Weather Service complained as well.
On Friday night, Dan Sobien, the president of the National Weather Service Employees Organization, tweeted: “Let me assure you the hard working employees of the NWS had nothing to do with the utterly disgusting and disingenuous tweet sent out by NOAA management tonight.”
In a telephone interview, Sobien said that the statement was “like nothing I’ve ever seen, ever,” and could prompt people to ignore future warnings. “I can’t think of another word for it other than managerial malpractice,” he said.
“NOAA needs to withdraw the statement,” he added, “they need to apologize to their employees and they need to go out and do a serious public relations campaign to try to renew the confidence of the American public in the National Weather Service.”
I will simply point out that NOAA, as well as other government bureaucracies, have many employees who loathe Trump and all the small government, regulation-cutting policies he is plowing through their agencies like a rogue wave.
In fact, remember that their hatred for the Chief Executive of the country is so intense, they didn’t want to hang the official presidential portrait in their offices in 2017.
In the lobby of every federal building, just inside security turnstiles and before the elevator banks, a framed photograph of the president has always hung on the wall.
Not so anymore. Nearly eight months after Donald Trump’s inauguration, pictures of the president and Vice President Pence are missing from thousands of federal courthouses, laboratories, military installations, ports of entry, office suites and hallways, and from U.S. embassies abroad.
On the walls are empty picture hooks left when workers took down official portraits of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on Jan. 20. Federal employees and visitors passing through the hallways since then have puzzled over the missing images, wondering why the traditional signal of the formal transition of power has yet to occur.
Trump Derangement Syndrome has fueled Neptune-scale storms since before he took office, and there is no sign of the intensity abating anytime soon.

I saw a video somewhere (Twitchy maybe?) of some Dorian report on CNN in which they clearly talk about the possibility of Alabama being hit by the hurricane.
But attacking Trump takes priority over truth and pretty much everything. Even over people’s safety.

The NWS has a lot of gall to suggest that this stupid media fight that no one else is bothering to watch will lead to ignoring warnings.
The reason being that the NWS is always pushing the worst case scenario. There’s nothing wrong with doing so, but there is the wolf cry effect that this has every time a “big one” turns out not to be a big one.

This was a worst case storm, just not for the USA. As it approached, it looked like Andrew, a storm that has cost me tens of thousands in higher insurance premiums, and I never saw or felt its direct effects.

The President tweeted that Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Alabama were at potential risk on 09/01. At that time the NHC had moved the potential track for Dorian to a grazing path north along the east coast of Florida. The predicted chances of Dorian impacting Alabama were almost non-existent at that time. Trump’s comment was supported by NHC advisories and graphics from 2-3 days earlier. It may have been stale, but not false. The NWS office in Birmingham Alabama, possibly in an effort to assuage fears among local Alabama residents, issued a statement that, at that time, Alabama was not thought to be at risk, the track having been moved to the east coast of Florida. This is understandable.

Enter the media. The media immediately screams that Trump is out of touch with the Dorian situation and possibly lying. I know that the Dorian situation was important to the media, they were hyping it continually, but the President has more on his plate than watching every single second of Dorian coverage. So, it should not be a huge surprise if he is not entirely up to date on the latest guess by the NHC as to the path Dorian will take. But, it was an opportunity to criticize Trump. So, Trump does what he always does, he punches back. he produces a NHC graphic, from 08/29 which, if the track is extended the center of Dorian would directly impact Alabama. Even if the storm turned north, as a Cat 1 or 2 storm, there was a good chance that Alabama would experience TS force winds. So, Trump was not lying. How can the media cover its own butt? By making a big deal out of an arcing line drawn on the graphic. Now, this line is totally irrelevant to whether Trump lied. It is a diversion. But, the media dragged the Alabama office of the NWS into the situation and pitted it against its ultimate boss, without any attempt to place the whole thing into context.
So, the leadership of NOAA, of which the NWS and the NHC are part, steps up and states, truthfully, that the information provided by the President was not necessarily in error. They did not claim that the information provided, at the time, by the Birmingham NWS office was inaccurate. They explained it by saying that the information provided by the Birmingham NWS office was based upon the assertion that the current track was absolute and would not change in the future. At that time, Dorian wa stationary over Grand Bahama Island, and the proposed track was dependent upon a northward turn, which had not occurred. Now, if anyone should know that weather prediction is not an exact science, it should be meteorologists. If we executed meteorologists for weather predictions which were inaccurate, there wouldn’t be a single meteorologist living.

This was an egregious falsehood on the part of Democrats and the Media.
If you look at the comment Trump made while holding the “doctored” map, you will see he said nothing about Alabama being hit by a hurricane. Only that “a little piece of Alabama” MAY be affected by the storm.
That statement was 100% correct, at the time he made it and for more than 24 hours AFTER he made it.

NHC advisories did not support the interpretation of Trump’s 09/01 statement to mean that Alabama was likely to get hit by TS force winds. The tracks were firmly off the east coast of Florida, by that time, and even the link that you provided showed 0% likelihood of TS force winds anywhere in Alabama. Now, this was all nothing more that a potential forecast of Dorian’s movement. It could have changed, again, and swung west into Florida, where, if it penetrated deeply enough, TS force winds could have occurred in Alabama. So, more than likely, Trumps information was stale. However, his information was not in anyway harmful to anyone. The local Birmingham NWS office corrected for local conditions. Trump never called them on it or criticized them for it. The kerfuffle was all the doing of the Media. Trump offered an explanation for his statement based upon a NHC from 08/29 showing a potential track for Dorian, which if it had progressed beyond the shaded cone, would have intersected Alabama. This made the media look foolish and triggered Sharpiegate as a diversion. Now, the media is trying to foment discord within NOAA. And, all over nothing.
As someone with memories of hurricanes going back to the early 50s, I can say that projected paths are something to be watched, not believed. Dora and Andrew came straight in to Florida without turning North.
For people living in flood planes, or in homes not safe in high winds, it takes several days to prepare, and it is not wasted effort when the storm turns away.
If Dorian had followed the path of Andrew, much of Florida would have been flattened.

The Aug 31 map shows the southeast corner of Alabama in the yellow zone. That is tropical force winds.
So, Yes, they did support Trump’s interpretation.

No. What you posted is a graphic of the percentage of possibility of TS storm winds being found in any particular area. The yellow band on this graphic is a 20-30% chance of TS force winds in this area. That is hardly a high level of probability.

End of story. Trump has been vindicated. He correctly reported what NOAA prepared.
That 0% likelihood is only for the next 5 days. Had Dorian continued pushing westward – an unknown at that time, and a couple models in the spaghetti charts had Dorian going across Florida into the Gulf – the TS / Hurricane wind probabilities would have reflected that. Nobody seems to remember those models, nor did anyone dare to call those models wrong.

Oh, it’s probably not that bad. Trump’s official portrait took forever to come out, I think eight months actually. A few agencies took down the previous president’s portrait after the election was final in November, a large number of them yanked the portrait the minute the swearing-in was complete.

That is not quite correct. Water vapor is usually not stated with the fixed gases as it varies widely due to time of day and geographic location. Water vapor can be anywhere from 0%-4% of the atmosphere, but averages about 2%.
I just finished watching a Nova documentary on PBS about the 5 hurricanes in 2017. Particularly interesting were hurricanes Irma and Gloria where the NWS and NOAA had several model projecting landfall on both coasts of Florida and constantly being revised as they predicted varying course changes. It got so chaotic that Governor Scott complained that he can’t order the evacuation of the entire state of Florida. Officials explained that even with their computer models, the weather variables are so chaotic that it is impossible to predict with any degree of certainty.
That is what is still happening. Trump even had problem of the NWS offering competing predictions between the regional Alabama office and national office. So what the hell is the controversy? At best, the NWS and NOAA are just guessing. That’s the best they can do.
